Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was born in Washington D.C.  Rawlings graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1918 and became a journalist. In 1928, she left New York to live in Cross Creek, Florida. She divorced her first husband, Charles Rawlings, in 1933, and married Norton Baskin, a St. Augustine business man, in 1941. Her novel, The Yearling, set in North Central Florida, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939.

Special Collections at the University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries include the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Collection, which will be added to the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Digital Collections over time. On December 27, 2007, the United States Postal Service announced that a Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings stamp would be one of the 2008 releases. The stamp's first day celebration will be held February 21, 2008, at the Rawlings Historic Site at Cross Creek, Florida.
