About the International Digital Ephemera Project at the University of California, Los Angeles

The International Digital Ephemera Project (IDEP) is an initiative to digitize, preserve and provide broad public access to print, images, multimedia, and social networking resources produced worldwide.

The Cuban Ephemera collection is part of IDEP and contains materials from various partner organizations including: Instituto de Historia de Cuba, Cinemateca de Cuba, Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí, and the Casa de Artes y Tradiciones Chinas. Materials include Chinese- language newspapers, the Spanish-language newspaper La Lucha, the journal El Figaro, radio programming, and Cuban-designed movie posters. In addition to current partnerships, the UCLA library is initiating new ones and as material is digitized it will be made available on the UCLA IDEP page and this page.

Periodicals

La Lucha is a Spanish-language daily newspaper with sections in English, from the holdings of the Instituto de Historia. The digital collection includes 1901-1905, 19071-1911, and 1914-1931.

El Figaro is a Cuban literary and artistic journal first published in 1885 and is from the holdings at the Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí. The digital collection includes volumes from 1885-1896 and 1898-1900.

Kwong Wah Po is a Chinese language Cuban newspaper from the Collection of the Casa de Artes y Tradiciones Chinas. This digital collection includes issues for the following years: 1974-77, 1980, 1974 and 1994-2011.

Man Set Yat Po is a Chinese language Cuban newspaper from the collection of the Casa de Artes y Tradiciones Chinas. This digital collection includes issues for 1947, 1953 and 1958.

Radio Programming

Universidad del Aire  was a radio program that provided cultural, political and literary programming from 1932-1960 and featured many of Cuba’s leading cultural and intellectual figures of the period as well intellectual figures who were in exile in Cuba. These broadcasts were recorded on lacquer (acetate) discs; surviving master recordings are currently housed at the Instituto de Historia de Cuba. The digital collection includes programs from 1949-1955 and 1958-1960.

Movie posters

The Carteles de Cine collection includes 1341 posters from the Cinemateca de Cuba that were created by Cuban artists for both Cuban and foreign films.
