About Florida Family and Community History

Created in response to the explosion of interest in family history and to serve Florida communities, especially underrepresented communities, the Florida Family and Community History Collection presents a wide range of material ranging from family papers, photographs, governmental documents, business publications, and records from community organizations.

In addition to published and manuscript items held by the University of Florida’s George A. Smathers Libraries Special and Area Collections, the collection promotes the digitization of material through outreach to historical societies, government, community organizations, and businesses from across the state.

Researchers exploring the history of Florida families and communities should also make use of the Florida Digital Newspaper Library, an invaluable resource containing over 2 million pages of historic and current Florida newspapers.
