PSRSFECTIVE-PBESAT ALD FUTURE

Apart from helping to forge a greater cultural awareness

among the many peoples of the Caribbean and Latin America, GARIFESTA

aims at being entertaining, inspirational and educational,

Some 100 shows portraying the cultures of the 31 partici-

pating countries will make CARIFESTA truly entertaining, enlightening

and inspirational. Thousands of overseas visitors will be immersed

in a Festival atmosphere of artistic creativity peculiar to the people

who live in and around the great gulf that is the Caribbean. One

thousand writers,-artists, musicians, dancers and folklorists living

in the Festival City artistic community will exchange ideas and

techniques in a unique cultural atmosphe-a.

A number of literary symposia and international exhibitions

of paintings, sculpture, books and photo.-raphy, based on the'ltheme

"The Land and its Peoples" will add to the educational dimensin of

the three-weak cultural exposition. N .

Although CARIFE3TA has not yet taken place, questions are

being asked about plans for future C-uiIFRsrAS. This is one decision

which must be left to the creative personalities who will be taking

part in this first Ca.iJFESTA, a decision which will depend not merely

on box office returns or popularity pools, but on the determination

of the writers, artists and performers themselves.

It is their determination over the years which gave reality

to the idea of a Caribbean Festival of Creative Arts. It will be

their dedication and perservance which will keep the spirit of

CARIFESTA alive in the years ahead.
