CARIFESTA '72
INTERNATIONAL PRESENTATION NO. VII

FRENCH GUIANA

The Lauriers Roses Folk Group, led by Mademoiselle Polycarpe has dancers
ranging in age from 10 to 50 years, It has been in existence for over 10 years.
Their performance will, include the Lerole, Mulala and Casse-Co two of which date
back to the days of slavery.

The roots of the Lerole are fouid in the Quadrille: when the slaves
saw their masters doing the Quadrille they went into the backdams and did it to
the beat of their drums. The Mulala on the other hand, is purely .African and is
danced all over French Guiana. Casse-4o is a dance done by the country folk to
make work easy. It expresses the joy of life and of work and captures all the
indigenous movements and rhythms of the folk.

JAMAICA

The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari a fusion of the horns and bass of
the Mystics, and the Count Ossie Rastafari Drums play a music of controlled anger
and of laughter, a music of love. Their music is immediately identifiable with
their life style and has its roots in Ethiopian Africa.
