Introduction

1804-2004: The Bicentennial of the Independence of Haiti

In 1894, in preparation for the centennial of the independence of Haiti, the Centennial
Association began its activities with a conference on slavery (see historical text below). A
century later, in 1994, the United Nations Organization decided to honour the bicentennial of the
first Black Republic by declaring 2004 the year of the commemoration of the struggle against,
and the abolition of, slavery. The oldest library in Haiti, one of the richest and most significant
sources of material on slavery in the French colonial period, has been preparing for the event
since 2001. UNESCO has generously donated the funds necessary to support the transferral of
archival material concerning slavery into digital format for presentation to a larger public either in
Haiti or globally, on the internet.










The West Indies and the Americas

A comprehensive understanding of the colonization of Haiti requires an account of the history of
colonialism and development in the West Indies and an understanding of the scale of the
Americas. Virtually all the islands are represented: Martinique, Guadeloupe, Grenada,
Barbados, Jamaica, Sainte-Lucie, Trinidad and Tobago, etc. Under the title of the West Indies,
the reader will find documents of great historical value. It is equally important to mention the
oldest French language text in the possession of the BHPSE, /'Histoire naturelle et generally
des Indes, written by Gonzalvo Fernandez d'Oviedo Y Valdes in 1556

Des I'arrivee des Europ6ens

II suffit de jeter un coup d'ceil sur I'histoire
d'Haiti pour se rendre compete que ce n'est
pas d'aujourd'hui qu'elle est I'un des pays
les plus pauvres de la terre. Lorsque
Christophe Colomb debarque en Amerique,
par malchance, il tombe sur I'ile d'Haiti.
Depuis lors, la misere s'y install. De nos
jours, grace au microscope ou a des
recherches archeologiques poussees, on
peut encore deviner que les Arawaks et
des Taynos y ont transit. Colomb relate a
son Roi et a sa Reine toutes sortes
d'histoires mirobolantes, mais la
malediction visit les autochtones. Depuis
ce jour-la, le pays de leurs ancetres devient
le pays le plus miserable du monde.

Pour comble de malheurs, apres Colomb,
les Frangais font pied a terre sur I'ile. IIs
veulent s'enrichir vite et pour ce,
convertissent Saint-Domingue en une
gehenne oi I'on consomme les captifs
africains par fournee. Les Frangais
chantent les merveilles de la < Antilles>> avec raison, mais ceux qui
coupent la canne n'auraient pas besoin
d'indices des Nations-Unies pour
apprendre qu'ils vivent au-dessous du seuil
de pauvrete critique.

The Saint Domingue Revolution


The colony of Saint-Domingue was the hub of 18th century colonial France. The most
prosperous of the French colonies, it was simultaneously a place of tremendous privilege and a
fermentation cask of all manner of social, political and economic contradictions which
surrounded the abolition of slavery. The creation in 1804 of the second free state to emerge in
the Americas, represented the only state in the world founded by slaves and their descendants.
Under this title you will find documents relevant to colonial society, at the time of the Dominican
Revolution.

T he revolution of the colony of Saint-Domingue, was the beginning of the end of colonial
slavery. On July the seventh 1801, after ten years of grave difficulty and numerous battles,
Toussaint Louverture unveiled a national Constitution which abolished slavery on the island of
Saint-Domingue. However, Napoleon Bonaparte, (arguably) the most powerful man in Europe,
saw things differently. Troops led by Leclerc descended on the population of Saint-Domingue
with the intent of re-establishing slavery on the island. The final instructions of Toussaint
Louverture prior to his exile and imprisonment were to be followed to the letter.

"In exiling me from my country, they have in Saint Domingue, hewn the trunk of the tree
of liberty of the blacks; but this tree will sprout again swiftly, for its roots are profoundly
deep and strong."










Slavery


This page is quantitatively the largest in our presentation. This is due to the priority we have
accorded documents relevant to the subject of slavery in keeping with the UN decision to
declare 2004 the Year of the commemoration of the struggle against, and the abolition of,
slavery. Approximately one hundred of the documents printed, which consists of thousands of
digitally reproduced pages. The majority of documents presented here date to the 18th century,
although there are also a large number of 19th century texts. The majority of documents are
available for viewing upon request. The question of the trait of negritude and its abolition and
the emancipation of slaves is the focus of these documents. Contained herein there are two
works written by slaves: R6flexions surla traite et I'esclavage by the Negros of Cugoano and Le
More Lack. The Cugoano work, and the Manuel de flagellation des femmes esclaves, attracted
the attention of the National Presses of the Republic of Haiti, which, in the year of the
bicentennial, decided to reprint the texts.You will also find on this page several texts by the
Abbot Gregoire, known for his work in favour of the abolition of slavery. Lastly, a manuscript by
Louis Joseph Janvier concerning Toussaint Louverture and Jean Jaques Dessalines has been
presented for your use.

La Traite des Noirs

La Traite des Noirs est I'epine dorsale de
I'economie de plantation. Elle a pour
antecedent le commerce des engages durant
le XVIIle siecle et les debuts du XVIIle...

Pour acheteurs et vendeurs, la Traite des
Noirs n'est donc qu'en apparence un
commerce d'6tre human. En fait, il s'agit d'un
commerce intensif de force de travail pure, ce
qui s'obtient en faisant du Noir la negation
m6me de I'6tre human : celui qui est tout ce
qu'une personnel n'est pas et ne doit pas 6tre.

Dans la plantation de denrees du XVIIle
siecle, I'offre de resources humaines par la
Traite etant presque illimitee, le planteur peut
avec patience emonder toute mauvaise
habitude ou disposition tendant a diminuer sa
productivity, de fagon a computer sur ces
travailleurs parfaits. Cette creature
impeccable, precurseur du robot
contemporain, est mieux connue comme un
esclave creole ou un Africain "creolise". Les
travailleurs etant "jetables" et remplagables a
souhait, la torture devient le plus efficace et le
plus economique des programmes de
developpement des resourcess humaines".

This page contains several documents and manuscripts. The provenience of these archival
documents have been authenticated as originating in the colonial period, in the region of
Jeremie, in the south-western portion of Saint-Domingue. You will find amongst these
documents; contracts for the sale of slaves, certificates of (dis)enfranchisement, passports, land
grants etc. In essence some of the most important texts on one of the least studied regions, and
consequently the least known colony of Sait-Domingue. There are approximately ten digitally
scanned documents.

Introduction 1804-2004: The Bicentennial of the Independence of Haiti Année internationale de la lutte contre l'esclavage et son abolition In 1894, in preparation for the centennial of the independence of Haiti, the Centennial Association began its activities with a conference on slavery (see historical text below). A century later, in 1994, the United Nations Organization decided to honour the bicentennial of the first Black Republic by declaring 2004 the year of the commemoration of the struggle against, and the abolition of, slavery . The oldest library in Haiti, one of the richest and most significant sources of material on slavery in the French colonial period, has been preparing for the event since 2001. UNESCO has generously donated the funds necessary to support the transferral of archival material concerning slavery into digital format for presentation to a larger public either in Haiti or globally, on the internet.

The West Indies and the Americas A comprehensive understanding of the colonization of Haiti requires an account of the history of colonialism and development in the West Indies and an understanding of the scale of the Americas. Virtually all the islands are represented: Martinique, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Barbados, Jamaica, Sainte-Lucie, Trinidad and Tobago, etc. Under the title of the West Indies, the reader will find documents of great historical value. Pòtoprens, 2004 Dès l'arrivée des Européens Il suffit de jeter un coup d’œil sur l’histoire d’Haïti pour se rendre compte que ce n’est pas d’aujourd’hui qu’elle est l’un des pays les plus pauvres de la terre. Lorsque Christophe Colomb débarque en Amérique, par malchance, il tombe sur l’île d’Haïti. Depuis lors, la misère s’y installe. De nos jours, grâce au microscope ou à des recherches archéologiques poussées, on peut encore deviner que les Arawaks et des Taynos y ont transité. Colomb relate à son Roi et à sa Reine toutes sortes d’histoires mirobolantes, mais la malédiction visite les autochtones. Depuis ce jour-là, le pays de leurs ancêtres devient le pays le plus misérable du monde. Pour comble de malheurs, après Colomb, les Français font pied à terre sur l’île. Ils veulent s’enrichir vite et pour ce, convertissent Saint-Domingue en une géhenne où l’on consomme les captifs africains par fournée. Les Français chantent les merveilles de la «perle des Antilles» avec raison, mais ceux qui coupent la canne n’auraient pas besoin d’indices des Nations-Unies pour apprendre qu’ils vivent au-dessous du seuil de pauvreté critique. The Saint Domingue Revolution The colony of Saint-Domingue was the hub of 18th century colonial France. The most prosperous of the French colonies, it was si multaneously a place of tremendous privilege and a fermentation cask of all manner of social, pol itical and economic contradictions which surrounded the abolition of slavery. The creation in 1804 of the second free state to emerge in the Americas, represented the only state in the world founded by slaves and their descendants. Under this title you will find documents relevant to colonial society, at the time of the Dominican Revolution. On July the seventh 1801, after ten years of grave difficulty and numerous battles, Toussaint Louverture unveiled a national Constitution which abolished slavery on the island of Saint-Domingue. However, Napoleon Bonaparte, (arguably) the most powerful man in Europe, saw things differently. Troops led by Leclerc descended on the population of Saint-Domingue with the intent of re-establishing slavery on the island. The final instructions of Toussaint Louverture prior to his exile and imprisonment were to be followed to the letter. “In exiling me from my country, they have in Saint Domingue, hewn the trunk of the tree of liberty of the blacks; but this tree will spr out again swiftly, for its roots are profoundly deep and strong.”

Slavery This page is quantitatively the largest in our pres entation. This is due to the priority we have accorded documents relevant to the subject of slavery in keeping with the UN decision to declare 2004 the Year of the commemoration of the struggle against, and the abolition of, slavery . Approximately one hundred of the documents printed, which consists of thousands of digitally reproduced pages. The majority of documents presented here date to the 18th century, although there are also a large number of 19th century texts. The majority of documents are available for viewing upon request. The question of the trait of negritude and its abolition and the emancipation of slaves is the focus of these documents. Contained herein there are two works written by slaves: Réflexions sur la traite et l’esclavage by the Negros of Cugoano and Le More Lack . The Cugoano work, and the Manuel de flagellation des femmes esclaves , attracted the attention of the National Presses of the Republic of Haiti, which, in the year of the bicentennial, decided to reprint the texts.You will also find on this page several texts by the Abbot Gregoire, known for his work in favour of the abolition of slavery. Lastly, a manuscript by Louis Joseph Janvier concerning Toussaint Louverture and Jean Jaques Dessalines has been presented for your use. Elle a pour antécédent le commerce des engagés durant le XVIIe siècle et les débuts du XVIIIe... Pour acheteurs et vendeurs, la Traite des Noirs n’est donc qu’en apparence un commerce d’être humain. En fait, il s’agit d’un commerce intensif de force de travail pure, ce qui s’obtient en faisant du Noir la négation même de l’être humain : celui qui est tout ce qu’une personne n’est pas et ne doit pas être. Dans la plantation de denrées du XVIIIè siècle, l’offre de ressources humaines par la Traite étant presque illimitée, le planteur peut avec patience émonder toute mauvaise habitude ou disposition tendant à diminuer sa productivité, de façon à compter sur ces travailleurs parfaits. Cette créature impeccable, précurseur du robot contemporain, est mieux connue comme un esclave créole ou un Africain ý créolisé ý . Les travailleurs étant ý jetables ý et remplaçables à souhait, la torture devient le plus efficace et le plus économique des programmes de développement des ý ressources humaines ý .

The Jérémie's Archives This page contains several documents and manuscr ipts. The provenience of these archival documents have been authenticated as originating in the colonial period, in the region of Jérémie, in the south-western portion of Saint-Domingue. You will find amongst these documents; contracts for the sale of slaves, certificates of (dis)enfranchisement, passports, land grants etc. In essence some of the most important texts on one of the least studied regions, and consequently the least known colony of Sait-D omingue. There are approximately ten digitally scanned documents.
