WILLIAM A. SCHIPP'S BOTANICAL EXPLORATIONS IN THE STANN
CREEK AND TOLEDO DISTRICTS, BRITISH HONDURAS (1929-1935) *

Summary
Herbarium sets distributed by William A. Schipp to European and American institutions
represent one of the most significant and extensive collections ever made of the coastal plain
flora for the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts of southern British Honduras. Schipp (1933-
34) compiled the first complete flora of these districts in the form of a Catalogue entitled,
Flora of British Honduras, Pricelist of Seeds &- Herbarium Material. As a professional
Botanical Explorer, Schipp's discrimination in tie field yielded a total of 154 taxa new to
science, including two new genera, Schippia Burret and Schizocardia Smith & Standley (=
Purdiaea Planchon). Itineraries for collections made by Schipp from 1929 through 1935 are
based on 1462 herbarium specimens found in the Forestry Department Herbarium, Paslow
Building, Belize City, British Honduras. Schipp's specimens in the Forestry Department
Herbarium include 115 isotypes which have been verified, restored, and placed in a type
collection. Maps are presented to aid in the location of previously vaguc type localities.
The botanical explorations of William A. Schipp in southern British Honduras
are of considerable importance to future studies of the British Honduran Flora.
Schipp's numerous collections contributed greatly to our present day knowledge of
the coastal plain flora for the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts, which for other
coastal districts remains relatively unknown. Hardships were soon overcome by this
keen and discriminative Botanical Explorer.
William A. Schipp was born at Menindee in New .South Wales, Australia, in
1891. Prior to his botanical explorations in British Honduras (1929-1935) he spent
several years at the Botanical Gardens in Darwin, Australia (Schipp, 1932b), and
collected plants in New Guinea, Java, and the Dutch East Indies (Schipp, 1931a,
1932b). Schipp came to San Francisco, California from Tjondong, Tjikadjang, Java
in late January of 1929 (Merrill, 1928; Schipp, 1928). At the University of Cali-
fornia, Berkeley, he spent several days with E. D. Merrill, who was instrumental
in obtaining subscribers to Schipp's herbarium sets which were imperative to his
success as a Botanical Explorer, collector of herbaria.
Schipp left San Francisco (Schipp, 1929a) passing through the southern United
States to New Orleans where he boarded the S. S. Abargarez for British Honduras.
On the evening of 28 January 1929 he arrived at Belize the capital and main port
of the colony. Confirmation of Schipp's future persuits in British Honduras is
revealed in a letter (Schipp, 1929a) to E. D. Merrill about a week after arriving
in Belize.
My first interview in the colony, was with the Covernor, and that only for the purpose
of trying to secure some sort of position in the government service. Yet be it said, my first
glimpse of Honduras [British Honduras]. coupled with the expression on his Ex's face, when
I stated my wants, convinced me otherwise, so neither of us was disappointed, when he
said nothing doing. So now I have decided on devouting [sic] my time solely to botanical col-

lecting. In doing so I am not losing sight of the fact of it being a financial venture, ... you
know, to make a success of the business, it means that one would need at least twenty
subscribers, for the sets of herbarium material collected, this number should not be difficult
to attain, when one considers the fact that the flora of British Honduras has been practically
untouched in the past ... I can assure you, providing my health keeps good that I w1l
not leave Honduras [British Honduras], until such time as I have added greatly to our
present day knowledge of its flora, and fauna.
Requested of (Schipp, 1929a) and sent by Merrill was a list (Merrill, 1929b) of
scientific institutions which would most likely want to purchase herbarium material,
also the authorities best able to deal with particular groups. Arrangements were
made by E. D. Merrill for identifications of the bulk of Schipp's collections to
be made by Paul C. Standley at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago,
Illinois. For special groups, Merrill suggested that ferns be sent to W. R. Maxon
and grasses to A. H. Hitchcock, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; orchid
to Oakes Ames, Botanical Museum and composites to B. L. Robinson, Gray Her-
barium, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Early in February of 1929 Schipp left Belize equipped with a brief outline map
of the colony (acquired from the Surveyor Generals office) for the Stann Creek
District directly south of the Belize District where he started collecting twenty
specimens of each taxon in order to fulfill requests of his subscribers. The set of
specimens sent to Paul C. Standley at the Field Museum of Natural History was
retained without charge after identifications were made. Once determinations wea
sent by Standley to Schipp, then label information of the duplicates was completed
for distribution to subscribers at fifteen cents a specimen (U.S. currency). Specimens
were sold in complete sets (Schipp, 1929h) each containing approximately one
hundred numbers. Schipp never obtained twenty subscribers as originally anticipated.
Correspondence (Schipp, 1929h, 1936d) indicates at one time or another during the
years 1929-1935, the following institutions subscribed to Schipp's British Honduran
herbarium sets: British Honduras Forestry Department Herbarium, Belie. Ger-
many Botanisches Museum, Berlin-Dahlem. Great Britain British Museum
(Natural History), London; The Herbarium and Library, Royal Botanic Gardens,

A list of herbaria containing Schipp's specimens with collection numbers known
to be present is presented in Table 1. Specimen numbers are consistent between
herbaria. One set of numbers was used for regular herbarium sets sent to sub-
scribers, whereas, specimens obtained in limited numbers (Schipp, 1930e) were
distributed as "S" numbers in which a capital letter "S" proceeds the field number.
Many of Schipp's specimens are cited by Leonard (1936), O'Neill (1940), Robinson
(1935), A. C. Smith & Standley (1932). L. B. Smith & Lundell (1940), Standley
(1930, 1932, 1935), Standley & Record (1936), Swallen (1936), Taylor (1935),
Weatherby (1935), and Woodson (1936, 1940).

tains nearly a complete set of Schipp's collections. During March of 1968, an assess-
ment was made of these specimens followed with an investigation of the literature
for descriptions of new taxa. A total of 154 taxa, including two genera, Schippia
Burret and Schizocardia A. C. Smith & Standley (= Purdiaea Planchon), were
described from the vascular plant collections made by Schipp in the Stann Creek
and Toledo Districts. In December, 1969 all type material (isotypes) found in the
Forestry Department Herbarium, was verified, restored, and placed in a case separate
from the general collection. Herbaria containing type material are indicated in the
a Taxa Described from Schipp's British Honduran Vascular Plant Collections.
Exclamation marks after herbaria indicate that type specimens were checked either
by visiting or by corresponding with the institution. Negative numbers are included
fos ordering photographs of holotype specimens found in the Field Museum of
F natural History, Department of Botany, Chicago, Illinois. Accepted names are
according to the Flora of Guatemala (Fieldiana: Botany, Volume 24).

SCHIPPS FLORA OF BRITISH HONDURAS, PRICELIST OF SEEDS
& HERBARIUM MATERIAL
In 1933-34 Schipp posted two hundred and twenty copies of his Catalogue, Flora
of British Honduras, Priceist of Seeds & Herbarium Material, to different parts
of the world (Fig. 4). As a professional Botanical Explorer, this was an attempt to
increase the number of his subscribers and to aid present ones in making orders.
Determinations for the Catalogue (Schipp, 1933-34) were made by Paul C. Standley,
Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois; R. Pilger, M. Burret (Palms),
R. Mansfeld, and E. Ulbrich (fungi), Berlin-Dahlem; Wm. R. Taylor (algae), Ann
Arbor, Michigan; and A. S. Hitchcock and W. R. Maxon, Washington D.C.
The arrangement of Schipp's Catalogue reveals his keen observation in the field
and his familiarity with natural groups of the flora. The first part is systematically
arranged according to algae, mosses, ferns, conifers and angiosperms of British
Honduras, including prices for seed packets. The remainder of the Catalogue is
divided into the following sections: beautiful flowering trees, foliage trees suitable
for street planting, shade trees suitable for field crops, flowering shrubs, climbers,
cover crops and green manures, aquatic and marsh plants etc., and climbing and
epiphytical Araceae, Bromeliaceae etc. For most sections, height and color of plants
are given along with price of seed packets.
Schipp's Catalogue is the first flora ever compiled of southern British Honduras.
This Catalogue was to serve as a prelude to a more comprehensive work on the
total British Honduran flora which Schipp alludes to in the prologue of his Catalogue.
I have to thank my Clients for the generous support they have again given me, for
without the continual assistance afforded by their orders for Herbarium Specimens, Seeds
and other material there would not be now the possibility of presenting you with this
Catalogue; and it is my hope that if you are interested in the Indigenous Flora of Central
America and not already a Subscriber to my Collections, you will assist me in my
endeavour to produce in time a fairly comprehensive Catalogue of the Flora of the
whole of this Colony.
The completion of The Forests and Flora of British Honduras by Paul C. Standley
and Samuel J. Record in 1936 (Schipp, 1936b), the decline in the number of sub-
scribers (Schipp, 1934a), finances (Schipp, 1933b, 1934a), and illness (Schipp,
1935c-d, f, 1936b) are reasons that prevented Schipp from preparing a more
comprehensive flora of British Honduras, leading ultimately to his departure from
British Honduras (Schipp, 1936b) in 1937 for his native land. His health improved
in Australia where he was later employed as a landscape gardener by Norman
Lindsay. In 1967, William A. Schipp living in retirement in a country town in New
South Wales died, "leaving his few possessions to the local Horticultural Society,
in which he was keenly interested" (personal communication with Jack M. Schipp,
Maylands, Western Australia, a nephew of William A. Schipp).
SUMMARY OF SCHIPP'S COLLECTION SITES IN THE STANN CREEK DISTRICT
The scenic Stann Creek District is mostly hilly with elevations ranging from sea
level to over 2000 feet (Anderson, 1963) in the Cockscomb range of the Maya
Mountains. Plant collections (Fig. 5) were primarily made along the coastal plain
belt (Schipp, 1931a), with considerable time (Fig. 6) spent between Stann Creek
Town, at the mouth of the North Stann Creek, and Middlesex, 23 miles up the

Stann Creek Valley. Today, the Stann Creek Valley Road (Fig. 6) extends from
Stann Creek Town to Middlesex where it joins the Hummingbird Highway. Early
in the century, there was a Railway (Anderson, 1963) that went from Middlesex to
Commerce Bight Pier (Fig. 6) via Stann Creek Town. The work of replacing the
Railway with a road commenced at Middlesex in 1938. Schipp's botanical explore.

the Stann Creek Railway.
Many plants were collected along the Mullins River Road, especially at Big Creek
(100 ft. alt.). The trail at 11 mile (Fig. 6) is believed to be the Mullins River Road
to which Schipp refers (itineraries, 1929, 1931-1932), not the present day Mullins
River Road between 8 and 9 miles.

Along the coast (Fig. 5), Schipp explored Stann Creek Town, New Town, All
Pines, Sittee River, South Stann Creek, Seine Bight, and several cays (Schipp,
1932a-b) off the coast. Dr. Claude S. Harwood, a good friend of Schipp, lived in
Stann Creek Town and assisted Schipp throughout his stay in British Honduras.
Schipp's private herbarium (Schipp, [no date]d, [no year] b) was on display at the
home of C. S. Harwood, where botanists coming to the colony were encouraged to
visit. Newtown just south of Stann Creek Town, once a small Carib village, no
longer exists, Hopkins being the closest inhabited village. Schipp was at Newtown
(Schipp, [no date]d) when British Honduras was struck by a severe hurricane on
10 September 1931.
All Pines proved to be a paradise for the genus, Utricularia (Schipp, [no date]h,
1930k; Standley, 1931). An attempt was made via All Pines to collect in the Cocks-
comb Mountains (Schipp, 1930h), a part of the colony (Fig. 5) for which very little
is known. Schipp relates his experiences (Schipp, 1930h) to Paul C. Standley at
the Field Museum.
... collecting on the Cockscombs, I did, "but alas" with disastrous results, both from
the financial and health point of view, I camped at the foot of the mountains for a month
and eighteen days, before I could get my drying material transported to the field of
operations, which I, previously to this had dried to Regalia, the nearest point, to jump
off, for hauling overland to where I had my camp, sixteen miles distant, wet when I
eventually did get all my gear. I started right in the next day collecting around the foot
of the mountains, but not on the mountains however, as it was unfortunately too late
in the season, as the rains had already set in, however this did not worry me much, as
I could find plenty to collect in the vicinity of the camp, but as luck would have it, I was
after three weeks of collecting taken ill with malaria.
Schipp was taken to All Pines (Schipp, 1930h) where he was placed on a boat for
Stann Creek Town. After recovering in Stann Creek Town he returned to All Pines
finding half of his specimens (Schipp, 1930h) spoilt with mold. Financial reasons
(Schipp, 1930h) prevented Schipp from making further collections in the Cockscomb
Mountains. At All Pines Schipp decided to explore the Toledo District (Schipp [no
date]h, 1930h, 1932b), commencing during August of 1932 in the vicinity of Punta
Gorda.
SUMMARY OF SCHIPPS COLLECTION SITES IN THE TOLEDO DISTRICT
In the Toledo District, Schipp's explorations (Fig. 7) ranged from the coastal belt
to the British Honduras-Guatemala frontier at an elevation over 2000 feet. Along
the coast collections were made at Rio Grande, Jacinto Creek, Punta Gorda, and
the Temash River. In the vicinity of Punta Gorda Schipp collected throughout 'he
Toledo Settlement (Fig. 8). In the late 1860s (Anderson, 1963), Americans from
the southern United States, ruined by the Civil War, moved to British Honduras
where they established the Toledo Settlement This settlement (Fig. 8) comprises a
number of Civil War Estates including Forest Home, Eldorado, Fern Hill (about
5 miles from Punta Gorda), Westmoreland (a few miles from Punta Gorda), Dixie
(about 6 miles from Punta Gorda), Fairview (a village where the Noviciate of the
Pallotine nuns known as Nazareth is situated), and Missouri Rancho (alcng the
Rio Grande).
At Punta Gorda, Schipp finished compiling (Schipp, 1933b) and distributed
(Fig. 4) his Catalogue (Flora of British Honduras, Prcelist of Seeds & Herbarium
Material, 1933-34). He also made botanical paintings (Schipp, 1933b) of new taxa

described from his collections. Schipp sold the water color paintings of Schizocardia
beliensis A. C. Smith & Standley (Fig. 2) and Quiina schippii Standley (Fig. 3) to
the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois.
Inland from the Toledo Settlement (Figs. 7-8), Schipp collected at Machaca,
Mafredi Lagoon (near the San Antonio Road), San Antonio, Pueblo Viejo, and
Rio Blanco. During February of 1934, Schipp met the government survey party at
Camp 31 situated approximately thirty-one miles from the southern border of British
Honduras along the British Honduras-Guatemala boundary. The survey party set
up a camp site at each mile as it surveyed this rough terrain of porous limestone.
The nature of Schipp's collections from Camps 31-36 (Fig. 7) is revealed in a
letter (Schipp, 1934c) to B. L. Robinson at the Gray Herbarium, Cambridge, Massa-
chusetts.
