model, ;s an important project within INA's outreach prlIa,.in ll ;nd as a tribute to Dick Stefly's
innovatiNe research on the Serce imiman ship. Happily Dick was informed of this decision
shortly before his death.

much sern its a research mlldel in the Stelty tradition. It will help to narrow the parameters in
the <, i:tit-'ra.iiit of the iii ii stern am!nd the Inikin,-- For the steering oars. It will also provide

the vehicle for a detailed otmparison of the Inill's construction with that of the ninth-century
obihurun ship, the late l /.iniiiiit ships at Yenikalp in Istanllul and some iii,.i.i-\di vessels from
the I.evant. This comparison may prove .-i:nilt amt toward the resolution of a maior and as vet
unatnswered question: where had the ship been built? Until recently, the likely answer appeared
to be on the north shore of the Sea of Mlarmara. IHowsever, contemporaneous Fatimid sealarers
and maritime traders routinely had two home ports between which they coducted their
comImerce. %im th e ceramic wares are not transient cargo thexr I.in 11 the Serae I.imani
ship and its crew and came from both the north shore of the Sea dli Marmara and the Syrian
coast, it is quite conmceiable that the ship and crew had two home pluroT and that the ship m.,,
