Late last xear, conversations between D)onnm Hamilton, Glenn C( i i ,.Jim I)'i.i.hli and me
lead to the decision to seek the necessary fliiinii i' to completler the Iuiilulinl of the exhibition
model, ;s an important project within INA's outreach prlIa,.in ll ;nd as a tribute to Dick Stefly's
innovatiNe research on the Serce imiman ship. Happily Dick was informed of this decision
shortly before his death.

ApiP"ii ii.itely, Glenn (;rieo, now (director of the Nautiial .Ai 1.Ia, ln, Program's Ship Model
l.al)bo tory, %% ill complete the i \h IIFilliii model (hat hle linii t ".i'.Ill, \ il. C Cer nial P'iilk. Fred
Hotker and I "ill assist him as consultants. \\e hope to make the model the centerpiece of an
updated Glass \\ ri k H.Ill exhibition in the BIhila lll Museum ixhich wiill be carried out upon
completion li the main text olf Serge Lmnan volume 3 at the end of this (htecade. he model
will also he the subject of a chapter in volume 3.

'he exhilitiion model will serve to illustrate in a far more ..itiita ill manner than heretofore
the ship's i-i- l]il and the disosition of thle ship's anchors. However, the 1 mo10(l ill also ver
much sern its a research mlldel in the Stelty tradition. It will help to narrow the parameters in
the <, i:tit-'ra.iiit of the iii ii stern am!nd the Inikin,-- For the steering oars. It will also provide

the vehicle for a detailed otmparison of the Inill's construction with that of the ninth-century
obihurun ship, the late l /.iniiiiit ships at Yenikalp in Istanllul and some iii,.i.i-\di vessels from
the I.evant. This comparison may prove .-i:nilt amt toward the resolution of a maior and as vet
unatnswered question: where had the ship been built? Until recently, the likely answer appeared
to be on the north shore of the Sea of Mlarmara. IHowsever, contemporaneous Fatimid sealarers
and maritime traders routinely had two home ports between which they coducted their
comImerce. %im th e ceramic wares are not transient cargo thexr I.in 11 the Serae I.imani
ship and its crew and came from both the north shore of the Sea dli Marmara and the Syrian
coast, it is quite conmceiable that the ship and crew had two home pluroT and that the ship m.,,
have been built in ') I,a.

Glenn (ricco is anxious to start the modlt as soon as possible and would carry it to tomp)letionI
over a period of two years at arn estimated cost of 0solmte Iitil(i. I I" lpni however, until full fniilii1, is in place. To start the priie" n, I have made a lh.ill'e1u r ir.ant to
INA, and ask that you join me in pl I I itlini the lunds to complete the model. It will he in honor
