Carter Submarine
Exhibition
In celebration of the 60th
anniversary of Jimmy Carter
becoming a submariner, The
Jimmy Carter Presidential
Library is hosting the exhi-
bition "A View from the

This exhibition of paint-
ings and drawings from the
United States Naval Historical
Center's art collection pro-
vides a unique look at the role
of the U.S. Submarine Service.
It includes a 1902 drawing of
the first submarine, Hunley,
as well as 42 other historic
paintings and drawings from
WWII to the 1980s. Artists
such as Thomas Hart Benton,
Georges Shreiber, and John
Charles Roach capture the
mystery of the submarine
and the adventurous nature
of those who serve on them.
Anyone who has served on
a submarine or knows some-

held their annual Sea

May 29 at the Clubs of Kings
Bay. The event honored the
top Sailors, Marines, Coast
Guardsmen and their spous-

area. The evening included
a social hour, buffet dinner,
guest speaker and the awards
ceremony.
This year's guest speakerwas
Rear Adm. Timothy Giardina,
commander, Submarine

spoke about the creation of
the Sailor of the Year Program
by Adm. Zumwalt in 1972 and
the Navy's Maritime Strategy.
Keith Post, president of the

Giardina to announce the eve-
ning's awardees. A command
representative explained their
Sailor's strengths and pro-
vided a few personal tidbits
for everyone's entertainment
while introducing each Sailor
of the Year. Command repre-
sentatives also spoke for the
Sailors who could not be at the
banquet due to deployments.
"The Navy League has been
holding this banquet for many
years and it's a unique oppor-
tunity for us, all of our com-
munity partners and local
businesses to show apprecia-
tion for our military and honor
our top Sailors and Marines,"
Post said.

ust like every car should
have a spare tire, every fam-

happen due to Mother Nature
and other unforeseen events.
That's why Naval Submarine
Base Kings Bay held a town
hall meeting at the Naval
Submarine Base Auditorium
May 30 to get base residents
prepared for this years' hur-
ricane season.
Hurricane season start-
ed June 1 and runs through
November. Although it has
been more than a 100 years
since Camden County has
been hit directly by a hur-
ricane, nine storms have hit
within 60 miles of Camden
County. The speakers talked
about evacuation, mustering,
safe havens, evacuation kits
and other important informa-
tion.
"Everyone should have a
disaster supply kit of some sort
for a hurricane but, floods and
tornadoes are prevalent in
Georgia also. Being prepared
and knowing your options is
the main idea."
The facilitators put out
such information as the safe
route out of town in case of a
disaster and the safe havens.

the history of the storms that
have hit locally and important

"From what I've found out,
this was the first time that
any Sergeant Major of the
Marine Corps has ever visited
this base. This is such a huge
deal because it raises morale
throughout the entire com-
pany."
According to Gilstrap, he
feels that this was a great
opportunity for the young
Marines and Sailors to talk to
someone who has been in for
so long and has so much to
teach them.
"Sgt. Maj. Kent is known for
being the type of senior enlist-
ed leader who goes where ever
the Marines and Sailors are,"'
he explained.
"He gets right down to their
level and brings the level of
motivation up where ever he
goes."

paper-based testing, General
Educational Development
(GED), ACT, and SAT exams
were halted Feb. 29 due to
a suspected compromise
of testing material on four
Navy ships and at one shore
command. During this time,
Seaman to Admiral (STA) 21
packages were sent incom-
plete as a result of the suspen-
sion. However, the Navy has
brought these tests back as of
May 1 with the successful res-
olution of the compromised
tests.
"I'm glad to see that the
Navy has brought back the
ACT and SAT. As a command
career councilor, I found
myself advising many Sailors
to take the ACT or SAT for
their STA-21 package;'" said
Culinary Specialist 1st Class
(SS) Kevin Bower, command
career councilor for Kings Bay.
"With some of the problems of
paper tests coming to light, I
think it opened the door for a
more realistic look into elec-
tronic testing and its advan-
tages."
Sailors at NSB Kings Bay

the Navy is looking into more
electronic based testing. The
electronic based testing allows
for Sailors to immediately

Correction
The following are errors that appeared in the Kings Bay
Asian Pacific Heritage Celebration article in the May 29
edition of the Kings Bay Periscope.
1. In a photo on page four, the girls are not performing
the Carinosa, nor is the Carinosa the national dance of the
Philippines. The girls are performing to "Pearly Shells"
and are from the Camden County Filipino American
Association.
2. In the article, the Carinosa is referred to again as the
national dance of the Philippines and the girls are referred
to as CCHS students rather than Camden County Filipino
American Association members.
3. A photo on page five states that the dancers are from
Hoku-Loa Dancers from Jacksonville. The dancers are
Maria Alarcon and Richard Isom from the Camden County
Filipino American Association.
4. In a photo on page five (lower left) Joel Garrido's
partner is from the Camden County Filipino American
Association, not the Hoku-Loa Dancers.
5. The Hoku Loa dancers are described in one photo as
performing a Filipino-American folk dance when in fact all
their dances were of Polynesian origin.

Moving and taking care of you
By Beth Wilson
Periscope Contributor
Moving isn't easy but
it does not have to
be dreaded. The
impact of relocating and start-
ing fresh relationships can be
daunting but it can also be an
adventure if we prepare, plan
and chose our 'tude.
Let's talk about the kids first.
Telling the children will be
hard but earlier is often better
than later. Telling them early
provides the opportunity for
them to be a part of the plan-
ning process while maximiz-
ing time they have left with
friends, teammates and class-
mates. It also gives them time
to get comfortable with the
move while building excite-
ment for the trip and new
home.
Consider these tips for your
children.
1.Turn the move into an
adventure. Get out the maps
and search the internet for
information and attractions to
experience at your new loca-
tion. Don't forget to plan the
trip look for interesting plac-
es to visit along the way. (check
out the websites offered last
week for tips)
2. Plan time for your children
to play and say their goodbyes.
Affirm their feelings of loss and
take this time to learn to use
email, letter writing and other
methods of communication to
stay in touch with friends.
3.Have a party for your chil-
dren and their friends. Ideas
for the party include taking
pictures, printing them on
your home printer and assem-
bling a memory book for all
children.
Have each child bring a
memory book/photo album
to complete at the party. In
addition instruct them to
bring a box of note cards pre-
addressed with their home
address. Your child can also
give a box to each friend with
your new address.
4.Pack things that are dear
to your children to go in the
car/plane with you. Don't
forget stuffed animals, photo
albums, blankets or other
items that would comfort your
children.
Tips for you:
1.Consider setting up a web-
based email address (netzero,
hotmail, yahoo). This will help
people stay in touch with you
as this address will not change
as your internet service pro-
vider (ISP) changes. You can
access these accounts from
any ISP.
2.Take care of you and plan
stress busters for you have a
manicure, pedicure, massage.
3.Take time with your friends
and local family. Before we left
our last duty station I invited
my girlfriends to join me at
our favorite restaurant. I asked
them to come ready to laugh.
We spent our time together
laughing about our lives, chil-
dren, and of course our Sailor.
It was good medicine to have
that precious time with them,
making one more memory and
saying a precious goodbye.
4.Stay connected with your
family. Make time for family
nights where you continue to
make memories and transi-
tion together.
Check out www.militaryo-
nesource.com and www.mili-
taryhomefront.dod.mil for
additional moving tips.
Moving is can be an exciting
adventure or a challenge-rid-
den hassle. Keep your sense
of humor intact. Things are
going to go wrong that is life.
It isn't your service member's
fault; it isn't the Navy's fault. It
is just life.
Expect hurdles but keep
laughing. Our attitude can set
the tone for everyone around
us. We don't want to add to
Beth Wilson
Periscope Contributor
their stress our bad mood.
As Sheree Phillips says, "We
may not have control over the
details of our lives but we do
have control on our response
and attitude.'
Moving daywillbe upon you
before you realize it. Planning
continues to be the key to a
less stressful day.
Next week we will look at
house hunting tips, planning
that road trip and, of course,
preparing for the day the mov-
ers arrive.

Anything But Dependent
How do we handle the hard times?
By Marie Hobson
Periscope Contributor
How do I stop crying??
This is a ques-
tion I received from a
young Navy wife and it hits a
soft spot in all of our hearts.
We have all cried. I have never
met a woman that hasn't at
some point in this crazy Navy
life. In the first few years, I was
lost. I thought I had control,
but I didn't. It just looked like
I did. But on the inside, I was
withering away as each patrol
came and went.
I was becoming stressed,
exhausted, and just didn't
feel like my normal energetic
self. This life was wearing on
me. I was always moving and
felt like I could never catch up.
And most of all, I missed my
husband/best friend terribly.
No one looks forward to get-
ting married, just to spend so
much time apart.
Many things had hap-
pened during our first three
years in the Navy. We had
some really hard times (that's
a whole column in itself). All
of us have, some more than
others.
As milspouseswe are thrown
into a world we do not know.
We didn't go to boot camp and
get "basic training" like our
husbands. Instead, we got a
packet handed to us at a pre-
deployment night that said,
"Welcome to the USS Where
He Works!" Printed on fancy
paper with a large color picture
of the glorious warship her-
self! Inside the magnificent
packet you will read: "Here are
some phone numbers if you
Marie Hobson
Periscope Contributor
need help, someone dies, or if
you have a baby ... And here
is a list of things we never want
you to talk about and/or do...
EVER, or your husband will
be banished punished!" Then
the CO and COB would stand
up and give their words of
encouragement, "Bravo
Zulu, Go Navy....blah, blah,
blah" And then your husband
is gone. JUST-LIKE-THAT.
You are not prepared for
this. Even if you, your hus-
band, and his command did
everything right. No one gets
up at the pre-deployment
night to tell you what it is really
going to be like. None tells you
that you're going to be lonely,
scared, that things will break,
and your children just won't
understand.
No one reminds you that you
will be taking on the world one
day at a time as a single and
sometimes overwhelmed par-
ent. And to top it off, no one
tells you the worry that you
will have when thinking about
your husband's job defending
our country. No one tells you
that you will cry.
If we had this speech, a
few wives would run for the
exit and never look back, and
the rest of us would at least
have been warned! But we
didn't. No one told us the
worst case scenario. We come
into this sight unseen. And
there is a moment that we all
have had or will face. It is the
moment where we decide for
ourselves that we are going to
be ok.
This moment hit me about
our third patrol, on our first
boat. I decided to make
things better. I knew that I
loved my husband and sup-
ported his decision to serve.
I accepted that fact that this
life was going to be hard.
That it wasn't always going
to be Navy Birthday Balls and
Homecomings. I knew that
there were going to be times
where I wanted to run, times
where I wanted to cry and
times where I doubted myself
and my own ability. I knew it
was going to just suck some-
times, but it would be how I
handled it that would make it
better.
My advice to the new wife
is to get on your own sched-
ule. You will realize that you
live your life differently with-
out your husband and that is
ok! Some wives find this scary
because then their husband
comes home and it can be
awkward adjusting to each
other again. It is completely
normal. Looking back, I laugh
and see how I have grown. And
how the things I thought were
so hard in the beginning are
not even big deals now. You
and your husband will grow.
The first four years in the Navy
for us were hard, but now we
are enjoying it and the deploy-
ments are not "fun" but they
are a part of our life.
The second thing is to find
comfort from other women
going through the same expe-
rience. No one knows how
you are feeling better than the
women going through it with
you.
Family is great, but friends
are family that you choose. Go
to the Family Readiness Group
and see what it is about. Not
every FRG is great, but at the
same time, not every FRG is
bad.
You might meet your new
best friend at one of these
meetings. I did. If you go and
it isn't what you want it to be,
you can get involved in your
community. You can volun-
teer; join a church or moms
group, etc. I know that many
of us work outside the home
and sometimes it is hard to
stay connected, but you have
to be proactive. You won't
find many groups and organi-
zations coming door to door
in the evening giving you a
private invitation.
It's going to be tough, but it
really is what you make of it. If
you want to cry every night. .
. you will. If you want to go on
with your own life and accept
that your husband will come
in and out of it ... then you
will get stronger and it does
become easier! I promise. It
will also make your husband's
patrol easier for him knowing
that you are ok.
It is how we handle those
"hard times" that make all the
difference in the world.

similar assortment of food and
beverages as the Big EZ.
According to MWR staff
members, the Sports Zone was
designed to add a more inter-

Marines and Sailors to use.
"The main reason is to
give the Sailors and Marines a

adults mostly 18 and up, but
also hosts a family day and
teen night that allows children
to come and enjoy a movie
and games.
"The Sports Zone is mainly
for adults, but we would like
to try and make it for every-
one, which is why we are hold-
ing family day and teen night
so that families can enjoy the
facilities as well," Myhre said.
The Sports Zone holds
several different tourna-
ments throughout the week-
days starting with foosball
on Mondays, ping-pong
on Tuesdays, and darts on
Wednesdays, with other tour-
naments such as basketball,
air hockey, and jousting and
sumo competitions coming in
the future. One of their big-
gest tournaments they have is
a Texas Hold'Em Tournament,
which is held Thursdays at 7
p.m. The poker tournaments
can accommodate up to 28
participants. Each tourna-
ment must have a minimum
of five participants and each
one must be 18 or older to
play. Entry fees for the tour-
naments are $5 each except
for poker tournaments, which
are $20. The pots are divided
up among the first and sec-
ond place finishers, with the
winner getting 75 percent and
the loser getting 25 percent.
Aside from the tournaments,
the Sports Zone provides the
Sailors and Marines a chance
to watch certain pay-per-view
events such as wrestling and
boxing.
"We will be having fight
night as part of a regularly
scheduled event and hope-
fully put on a cookout for the
patrons to enjoy," said Myhre.
"Also, the TV's are open for
anyone to watch when Oscar's
is full, so long as it is appropri-
ate."
Even though it is fairly new
to the Big EZ, the Sports Zone
has seen improving atten-
dance and hopes to improve
even more during the summer
events.
"We have had low atten-
dance for a lot of the tour-
naments, but are still going
strong on days like Tuesdays
and Thursdays which are
because of pool, ping-pong
and poker," said Myhre. "The
patrons tell us that they like it a
lot and always tell us how they
are addicted to the basketball
game.":'

Card Dealer MASA Bobby Yamashita cuts the deck while Rob Nevers counts out his chips. Poker tournaments are held every Thursday at 7 p.m. Entry fees are $20 with a minimum of five play-
ers to play and a maximum of 28 players due to table spaces. Pots are divided between the top two finishers, with the winner getting 75 percent of the pot and the loser getting 25.

Deployed Sailors given
more rating exam options
By MC2 Trevor Andersen
Navy Personnel Command Public
Affairs
S ailors deployed to or a
pending deployment
to Iraq, Afghanistan or
the Horn of Africa now have
more options for taking the
Navy advancement according
to NAVADMIN 139/07.
NAVADMIN 139/07 allows
commanding officers to autho-
rize administering the exam if
they find the area is conducive
for testing and the Sailors have
had ample time to prepare.
Sailors who are within 60
days of deploying to one of
these locations can also
request an early exam as long
as they are eligible to take it.
Deployed Sailors who are
eligible, but unable to take the
exam, will take the next regu-
larly scheduled exam upon
their return. The exams will
be scored against the missed
cycle for which they were eli-
gible.
First class petty officers
who were previously selec-
tion board eligible and meet
the requirements of the new
message are waived from the
advancement examination for
chief.
NAVADMIN 139/07 only
applies to Sailors in Iraq,
Afghanistan and the Horn of
Africa.
"When future mission
requirements demand our
Sailors fight on the front lines
of the global war on terrorism
in other geographic areas, it
will be expanded as appro-
priate," said Vice Adm. John
C. Harvey, Chief of Naval
Personnel.
The NAVADMIN super-
sedes a previous message
(NAVADMIN 290/06) which
affected Sailors' ability to take
advancement exams while in
these regions.

Identity thieves now
targeting military spouses
From American Forces Press Service
The American Red Cross is warning mili-
tary spouses about a new identity-theft
scam that targets family members of
deployed troops. The Red Cross was alerted
of the scam earlier this month, said Devorah
Goldburg of the Red Cross.
The scam involves a person with an American
accent calling a military spouse, identifying
herself as a representative of the Red Cross,
and telling the spouse that her husband was
hurt in Iraq and was medically evacuated to
Germany. The caller then says that doctors
can't start treatment until paperwork is com-
pleted, and that to start the paperwork they
need the spouse to verify her husband's social
security number and date of birth.
It is hard to determine how many spouses
have been targeted by this scam, as there are
many ways for spouses to report problems
like this. However, one confirmed report was
enough for the Red Cross to act, she added.
"We know that it happened to one person; it
was probably going to happen to others, and
we wanted to be prudent and alert people,"
Goldburg said.
American Red Cross representatives typically
do not contact military members or depen-
dents directly and almost always go through
a commander or first sergeant, according to a
Red Cross news release.
Military family members are urged not to give
out any personal information over the phone if
contacted by unknown individuals, including
confirmation that their spouse is deployed.
In addition, Red Cross representatives con-
tact military members or dependents directly
only in response to an emergency message
initiated by a family member, the news release
said.
The Red Cross does not report any type
of casualty information to family members;
the Defense Department will contact families
directly about service members' injuries.
It is a federal crime, punishable by up to five
years in prison, for a person to fraudulently
pretend to be a member of, or an agent for, the
American Red Cross for the purpose of solicit-
ing, collecting, or receiving money or material,
according to the news release. Any military
family member that receives such a call is
urged to report it to their local family readiness
group or military personnel flight.

Summer theatre inspires dreamers
By Paul Kraack
Periscope Contributor
They came. A few at
first, younger and less
experienced. But they
were enthusiastic. More came
later, mostly women, a little
more mature maybe, but just
as joyful and with talent to
spare. Then the distaff side
started showing up young
men, older guys amazing
men. They were all game to try
just about any challenge laid
before them. And at the end of
two days, we had it: a cast for
Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
I listened to the actor's com-
ments; I watched the emo-
tions of the directors and saw
them thrilled with the talent
you will see on stage in this
show. And I recalled a time,
many years ago and in another
place and a different era, when
this opportunity was imagined
by two starry-eyed teens.
The one I love and I have
been producing community
theatre for more than 20 years.
I don't tell you this to brag or
to impress; I want to provide
some context for the story I am
about to tell. We have offered
children's shows, youth and
teen fare, productions that fea-
tured college aged artists, and
community shows with casts

that were a mixture of all three.
Our actors have been families
sharing the summer "playing,"
and performers aspiring to the
profession, that were working
on their craft.
Our directors and staff have
been former students, profes-
sional colleagues and folks
with whom we just plain want-
ed to work. Mostly, however,
our work has been the culmi-
nation of a vision we discussed
as college students standing
on a campus bridge at Ball
State University in Muncie,
Indiana.
Holding hands there on that
pathway in 1969, we dreamed
about a place where chil-
dren could come and spend
their summers experiencing
the joys of balancing fun and
responsibility, and ultimately
being rewarded by the thrill of
an audience's laughter, tears,
and applause. We said that,
together, it ought to be pos-
sible to offer educational and
entertainment opportunities
for students and adults, par-
ents and children, amateurs
and professionals. Mostly,
though, we just wanted to cre-
ate magic. Images and fun;
illusions with music and char-
acter.
For the past 24 years, that
is what we have done each
summer. At last count, that
was nearly 70 shows and more
than 2,000 cast members of all
ages. This fun has been a fam-
ily affair; no one has escaped
the "gritty" jobs of theatrical
production.
Nieces, nephews, cousins,
grandmothers, parents, sons,
brothers, spouses, in-laws and
old friends (and their kids)
have joined up. My own moth-
er has made, by our calcula-
tions, costumes for more than
20 shows including playing
cards for Alice in Wonderland,
two dozen circle skirts for
Carousel, and a veritable sig-
nature masterpiece for Snow
White (two identical old-fash-
ioned dresses for two differ-
ent sized Snow Whites!) One
summer a talented teenaged
nephew painted two of the
