Aerial Spray For
Mosquitoes

King's Bay has requested
assistance from the 910th
Airlift Wing, Air Force Aerial
Spray Squadron to conduct
aerial spraying for mosquito
control 11-13 April 2008.
Spring precipitation and
recent rains have produced
large populations of mosqui-
toes. Base Public Health and
Pest Management personnel
have determined areas on
base where mosquito larvae
develop. Many of these mos-
quitoes are efficient vectors of
Eastern Equine Encephalitis
and West Nile virus, as well
as presenting a serious nui-
sance to personnel working

outside. Surveillance using
light traps, larval counts, and
biting complaints are used to
determine where and when
pesticide applications are
justified.
The Air Force Aerial Spray
Squadron will be applying
US Environmental Protection
Agency registered pesticides.
Adult mosquito control will
occur during the final 3 day-
light hours prior to sunset on
April 12. Operations may be
rescheduled for April 13 if foul
weather prevents scheduled
operations. The applications
will be made using a modified
C-130H cargo aircraft at 100-
150 above ground level. The
Public Works Department
will conduct an in-brief on 11
April to confirm the areas to
be treated, ensure safety and
environmental preparations
have been addressed, and
resolve any questions from
surrounding communities.
The public has been noti-
fied of Kings Bay's intent to
conduct aerial spraying for
mosquitoes to protect public
health, ease working condi-
tions, and improve quality of
life for members on station.
Concerned citizens should
contact the Kings Bay Public
Affairs Office at 573-4718.

Executive director tours Kings Bay

By MCSN Dmitry
Chepusov
Periscope Staff

Naval Submarine Base
Kings Bay often hosts
tours of the base,
many of them established for
groups of veteran organiza-
tions and Boy Scout Troops.
However, once in a while
some very important individu-
als come aboard to familiar-
ize themselves with Kings Bay
and tour one of the attached
Trident-class submarines.
Last week, newly appointed
Executive Director of Ashore
Readiness Division (OPNAV
N46) Stephanie Smith received
tours of the Trident Training
Facility (TTF) and the USS
Wyoming (SSBN 742).
"I could not believe the pro-
fessionalism, the leadership
and the efficiency of the base,"
said Smith at the conclusion of
her tour.
"I though it was com-
pletely amazing to be on the
Wyoming. TFF was great, but
being on the Wyoming was the
pinnacle of the tour."
According to Smith, OPNAV
N46 is all about supporting
the fleet by determining the
best possible ways to modern-
ize and streamline naval shore
installations. "Kings Bay dem-
onstrates a lot of great infra-
structure and fleet support,"
she said.

To conclude, Executive Officer
of the USS Wyoming (Blue)
Lt. Cmdr. Ted O'Harrah met

that most people don't even

The Navy introduced its
new physical training
uniform (PTU) to the
world, in a photo shoot, March
20-21.
The PTU consist of a gold
shirt with reflective Navy let-
tering and blue shorts with
Navy lettering and reflective
markings.
The new uniforms will be
required for all group and
unit physical training (PT) in
the Navy, as well as the semi-
annual physical fitness tests.
"It's to support the culture
of fitness and provide a uni-
formality among Sailors," said
Robert Carroll, the head of the
naval uniform office at Chief of
Naval Personnel. "To achieve
this, the Navy's leadership

decided to adopt the new PT
uniform."
The new PTUs will begin
hitting the Navy, with Recruit
Training Command, in April,
and will phase into the rest
of the fleet between May and
September. Sailors will be able
to pick up their uniforms at
Navy Exchanges around the
world, costing $50 for the
required two sets of PTUs.
Simultaneous with the offi-
cial fleet rollout of the uniform,
flag officers, commanding
officers and command master
chiefs will have the opportu-
nity to purchase their PTUs
by calling the Navy exchange
uniform call center.
"It's called leading from
the front," said Carroll when
explaining why a command-
ing officer can get his PTUs
right away. "The Navy wants to
lead its Sailors from the top."'

Chamber of Commerce tours USS Georgia

Georgia says thank you to business leaders

By MC1 (SW) Joe Sabo
Periscope Staff

The USS Georgia (SSGN
729) said hello to the
local business com-
munity in Camden County by
giving tours aboard the sub-
marine to Camden County
Chamber of Commerce mem-
bers March 25. The tour was a
way for the USS Georgia to say
thanks to the Camden County
business community.
"This was great because a
lot of the chamber members
have supported the base and

haven't had the opportunity
to take a tour of a submarine,"'
stated Chamber of Commerce
CEO Chris Daniel. "The whole
return to service has been real-
ly great and the crew has been
very gracious to let us visit. "I
am very glad I came because
it makes me respect what they
do even more. The even is
huge for Camden County and
we are looking forward to the
USS Georgia being here in the
Camden County area."
Members of the Chamber
of Commerce participated in
the Return to Service Steering

Committee. They worked the
Georgia Flag Ceremony, the
Georgia Art Contest and had
a key role in the USS Georgia's
arrival to the submarines
namesake state.
There were souvenirs
for sale on the pier for the
chamber visitors to purchase,
including the USS Georgia
Welcome Home Tee-Shirt,
which was made from the win-
ning drawing of the statewide
art contest.
The guests found the lockout
chamber aboard the subma-
rine interesting and enjoyed
looking at Crab Island through
the periscope. According to

Daniel, they also liked looking
at the berthing areas and liv-
ing spaces. Later, they learned
about the weapons systems
and saw the torpedo rooms.
"This was my first time
on a submarine and it was
amazing to see how small of a
space the Sailors live in'," said
Jeremy Jacobs of the Chamber
of Commerce.
"I am very happy to have
been able to see things that
the average person doesn't get
to see, because it helps put
things in perspective. A lot of
little things civilians take for
granted are not present on a
submarine."

will be service khaki without a cover. When service khaki is
unavailable, any regulation uniform is acceptable.
The public affairs center detachment located at NS
Mayport, Fla. is the tri-base source for all official photo-
graphs. It is recommended officers needing a full-length
photo for selection board purposes prior to Sept. 30
call (904) 270-7762 and set up an appointment with the
detachment. When official facilities are not available, offi-
cers are authorized to use commercial sources. If commer-
cial sources are unavailable, officer may submit any color
photograph that complies with the requirements outlined
in MILPERSMAN 1070-180.

Protect Your Base Identification
Operational Security is the responsibility of all hands.
Controlling access to the base is one of the most important
roles of our security force as they provide a safe and secure
environment for all of us. Do not leave your badge unat-
tended, especially in your vehicle, the gym locker room, or
other places where it could be stolen.

PSD Hours

Plan your best vaction ever

By Beth Wilson

pring is in the air my
allergies confirm this
fact but that means
summer vacation is around
the corner! Did you know you
can plan an awesome summer
utilizing military resources?
Yes, I said the military!
The military offers many
resources to enhance your
vacation. One of the first plac-
es to start is IT&T. IT&T stands
for Information, Tickets and
Tours. Located at each base
this can be one of your first
stops for a day trip, tickets to
the ballgame, ferry, ski and
golf course tickets, movies and
even vacations how about
an Alaskan cruise? While IT&T
offers discount tickets for local
movie theatres, major sport-
ing events, concerts and other
local attractions they also pro-
vide vacation opportunities.
They offer discount tickets to
Florida and California amuse-
ment parks, cruises, ski pack-
ages and more. Check them
out often and look for their
Recreation Ticket vehicle near
you.
MWR (Morale, Welfare
and Recreation) is another
resource that you may over-
look when planning events for
the summer.
Log on to their local website
or contact their local office to
get up to date information on
trips and tours. They do the
planning, they do the driving,
and we have all the fun! If you
are leaving the area but near
a military installation don't
forget to check out their local
MWR for opportunities in your
destination area.
MWR also maintains camp-
grounds, cabins, lodges and

even resorts for your recre-
ational enjoyment through-
out the country and the
world. From Pacific Beach in
Washington (a navy owned
resort) orShades ofGreenHotel
(Army) at Florida's Disney
World resort, or Armed Forces
Rec Center in Chiemesee and
Garmisch (Alps) to Hale Koa
Hotel on Waikiki Beach, MWR
offers something for everyone.
In addition to these locations,
MWR maintains resorts, lodg-
es, cabins and campgrounds,
both rustic and lavish through-
out the country and the world.
Most MWR locations rent
campers, jet skis, boats and
more to enhance your vaca-
tion. Call early for reserva-
tions, contact information is
provided below.
Think outside the Navy.
When my husband and I
PCS'd from Norfolk, Va. to San
Diego, Calif. we planned our
trip around attractions such
as Dollywood, Six Flags over
Texas and more. Each stop of
our trip was planned around
a local military installation
where possible to utilize their
accommodations and dis-
count tickets through IT&T.
Remember that you can utilize
the services and accommoda-
tions from all military instal-
lations not just your branch.
So go ahead, check out what
the Air Force and Army have
to offer.
Staying at the Navy Lodge
can save you 40% over the
civilian market. In addition,
Navy Lodges have kitchenettes
as standard where you would
pay additional for that at a
civilian hotel.
The Air Force Inn can save
you even more as fees are
based on the rank of the ser-
vice member. Families and

service members traveling on
orders will have preference for
available housing accommo-
dations before the recreational
traveler but that does not mean
that you will not be able to uti-
lize these opportunities. Book
your reservation as early as
possible. Some locations per-
mit reservations one year in
advance, others only 90 days.
The key is to contact them
early for their requirements
and reservation/cancellation
policies.
My favorite secret is located
in New York City. How does
a hotel room in mid-town
Manhattan for, oh, $25 sound
to you?
Check out the Soldiers;
Sailor's, Marine's, & Airmen's
Club. Rates are based on
rank and status (active duty,
retired, etc) but start at $25 per
night. Check out their website
at www.ssmaclub.org.
My husband and I have
stayed in Navy Lodges in
Norfolk, San Diego, Millington,
TN and Bangor, an Air Force
Inn in Texas, an Air Force
campground in Tucson and
an Army TDY Inn in Arlington,
Texas. I was impressed by the
consistent service provided by
the employees and quality of
accommodations.

If there are no military facili-
ties within range of your desti-
nation, IT&T can often secure

One final tip, most hotel chains
offer a military discount. Be
sure to ask for this discount.
By utilizing IT&T for dis-
count tickets and MWR for
lodging your vacation dollars
can provide a memorable and
exciting summer for you and
your family. Don't forget the
suntan lotaion and camera.

Anything But Dependent

Deployment Gremlins can strike at anytime

By Marie Hobson
Periscope Contributor

o, one of my recent arti-
cles was about staying
positive and focusing on
the successes during deploy-
ments. Now I promise you
I have been through a num-
ber of deployments where
Murphy's Law has tested me,
butwhat happened in less than
a week really got me thinking
that I upset the Deployment
Gremlins.
My deployment started off
like anyone else's. I was in
denial thinking that my hus-
band isn't really leaving. I
asked my husband the same
question I ask him every
deployment, "Do you think
anyone would notice if you
just didn't go!?" He just gives
me "the look" and kisses my
forehead. I've been asking this
question for years. I'd like to
think it is a completely logical
question, but by the look he
gives me, apparently not.
That night before my hus-
band left, he accidently
dropped my Mac Book. It is
broken, really broken. It had

Marie Hobson
Periscope Contributor

everything on it. My appoint-
ments, calendar, address
book, contact list for work and
emails. It was my planner.
On top of all that I had doz-
ens of articles and columns
saved on it. My husband just
a few days prior was looking at
hard drives and said I needed
one. I told him I would wait
and look around when I went
into the city after he left. He
told me I needed to keep my
computer backed up. Yeah,
foreshadowing stinks. I have
to say that I was freaking out
on the inside, but told myself
that it will be fine. I quickly
wrote a new article talking

about deployment successes,
because my original column
was in my Mac. I wrote this
incident off as an accident and
didn't think twice about it.
The next morning I dropped
the husband off at O'Dark
Thirty with our two children
in their PJ's half asleep in the
back seat. We say our good-
byes and the children and I
stop at the local bakery to get
breakfast smoothies and muf-
fins! It is a deployment tradi-
tion that helps us get through
the first morning. I got the
kids off to school and every-
thing seemed to be fine. But
then my article on deployment
successes was printed in the
paper. Here is what happened
next.
Within the first few days of
my husband leaving, every
light that is out of reach by
standing on a chair went out.
Strange, I thought to myself. I
just shook my head, pulled the
twelve foot ladder out of the
garage and changed all four
of the lights that had simul-
taneously gone out. I actu-
ally giggled at the whole thing
thinking, "Ok the husband is

deployed, got it"
A day or so after this my
garage door opener broke.
Now I'm starting to think
God is the one giggling as he
reminds me that my husband
has left, funny, very funny. So,
I can still manually open and
close it right? Not a big deal.
So, I go on with life again. I
joke to my girlfriends and fam-
ily that it could be worse. I
mean I could have had chil-
dren in the ER sick or my air-
conditioner or car could have
been broke.
I spoke too soon. I was up
the following night until 3ish
with my daughter who was
sick. I kept thinking to myself,
"Oh, I've done it now." After
a long night and little sleep
I had to get up and take care
of my yard work. If I didn't
mow my back yard I wouldn't
be able to see my four pound
Yorkie. That, and it was my
yard day and every milspouse
knows what happens if you fall
out of your routine. It's just
not pretty.
So out I go, on little sleep

Several theatre events set

to begin throughout April

By Paul Kraack
Periscope Contributor

In the next month, our
community will be host
to a trio of theatre events
that will cover all the aspects
of entertainment, from the
spiritual to the humorous to
the dramatic. Let me share the
details with you.
This weekend, Camden
County High School's award-
winning drama department
presents "CottonPatch Gospel',
a musical that retells the story
of Jesus as if it were set in
modern day, rural Georgia.
Based on the book "The
Cotton Patch Version of
Matthew and John" by
Clarence Jordan, with music
and lyrics written by Harry
Chapin (his last work before
his death), and adapted for the
stage by Tom Key and Russell
Treyz. "Cotton Patch Gospel"
takes the stage this Friday
(4.11) and Saturday (4.12) at
7:00 p.m. and Sunday (4.13) at
2:00 p.m.
Tickets range in price from
$4 to $7 and are available at
the door or in advance at the
CCHS Auditorium box office
or by calling 912-729-7463.
The show opens reveal-
ing that there's something
fishy and cosmic going on up
Gainesville, Ga. way.
The kind of strangeness that
lets a rogue prophet feed 5,000
people with a couple of cans
of sardines and a few saltines,
perform faith-healing mira-
cles on Stone Mountain, and
prophesy his own lynching
when he gets in trouble with
the law.
This is how the late Clarence
Jordanfusedthe patois ofNorth
Georgia with the politics of the
Civil Rights era to retell the
story of Christ as "The Cotton

Patch Version of Matthew and
John." Jordan, who died in
1969, wanted to strip away the
regal fabric of most biblical
translations to render Jesus as
a country mystic who starts
life in an apple crate and even-
tually gathers his disciples in
the conference room of the
Unadilla Travelodge.
Ultimately, what impresses
about "Cotton Patch" is the
way it ponders the state of the
world today, with all its ter-
ror, fear, hate, war, catastro-
phe and shortages. The teach-
ings of "Cotton Patch" author
Jordan-who espoused a phi-
losophy of love over violence,
shared possessions and a con-
servation of natural resourc-
es-ring true like never before.
The error of persecuting and
indicting out of ignorance is
unequivocal, because inno-
cent people can and do get
hurt.
With the music of Harry
Chapin tugging at your heart
and the joy of energetic, tal-
ented young actors sharing
their gifts with you, "Cotton
Patch Gospel" will be worth
a visit.
The following weekend,
Crooked Rivers Cultural
Heritage Productions presents
its third annual performance,
this one titled "Livin; Lovin;

& Learnin"' This year's per-
formance features performers
who are families, neighbors,
and individuals with a com-
mon interest in sharing the
history, laughter and emotion
inherent in our community.
The stories in this year's ren-
dition are entertaining and
poignant, about relationships,
school experiences, and the
hard and humorous lessons
of life.
"Livin; Lovin' & Learnin'"
will run three weekends, start-
ing Friday (Aprill8) and con-
tinue through Saturday (May
3), with shows on Fridays
and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and
a matinee on each Saturday
at 2 p.m. (nine shows in all).
Tickets are available at local
tourist centers, and Sheila's
Hallmark for $10 each. The
performance will be at the
new Arts Camden Cultural
Center, 921 Osborne Street in
St. Marys, GA (directly across
the street from the St. Marys
Railroad building).
Finally, a heads up about
"The Velveteen Rabbit,"
the final CCHS Drama
Department offering at
the CCHS Auditorium on
Thursday (April 24) and Friday
(April 25) at 7 p.m. Based on
the memorable children's
story, the play showcases the
story of a child whose toys
come to life and how his love
for one stuffed animal in par-
ticular enables it to become
"real." Heartwarming and per-
fect for kids of all ages, it is a
classic fantasy tale suited for
every type of patron. Tickets
are available at the CCHS
Auditorium box office or by
calling 912-729-7463 for more
information.

M ore than 1,500 kids and their parents
enjoyed free food, exotic animals and
fun activities for all ages at the annual
KidsFest Celebration at the NSB Kings Bay
Fitness Complex Tennis Courts April 5.
This year's event was sponsored by Navy
Federal Credit Union, Sawyer & Associates and
Winn Dixie, who came out and showed their
support with their own private booths on hand.
The event included a twenty-four foot high
slide, a quad jumper, bouncing castles, joust-
ing, train rides, a Family Fit tent, face painting
by Big Top Entertainment's Toe-knee, Cotton
Candy, and a cake walk every ten minutes.
The main reason the event was held was to
give back to the military children who have to
endure the military lifestyle.
"This was for the kids from military families
because this is the month of the military child,"
said Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Student

Intern Kendra Smith. "It is mainly to help the
children deal with their parents being in the
military and just giving them an opportunity
to relax, have fun and meet other children who
are just like them."
Several other groups such as the NSB Kings
Bay Police Department and the NSB Kings
Bay Marine Corps Security Forces Company
showed their support by helping the kids have
good time.
Children were able to go in the police vehi-
cles and look inside. They were also given the
opportunity to see Military Working Dogs as
well. The Marines showed their support by
doing face painting as well as letting the chil-
dren and their parents take pictures.
"The children and their parents were treated
to a lot of fun and games as well as the animals
and I feel that the overall reaction good," said
Smith. "Although some of the events that were
scheduled arrived late, the parents and their
children seemed to have enjoyed the experi-
ence."

Commissary installs new self-checkout registers

By MC1 (SW) Joe Sabo
Periscope Staff
Customers have noticed
a pleasant surprise
while entering the
Kings Bay Commissary
recently. The addition of new
registers including four self
check out registers are aimed
at increasing customer satis-
faction and helping the mili-
tary grocery store compete
with other stores outside the
gates of the base. The registers
were installed over the Easter
Holiday weekend of March 23.
"The addition of CARTS
or Commissary Advanced
Resale Transaction System is
a user friendly addition which
will increase customer satis-
faction," said Commissary
Assistant Manager Gregory
Anderson. "We cut out the first
three registers on the end we
never used anyway and made
the four self check out reg-
isters on the end, it appears
like we lost registers but really
we didn't because all of these
registers work and are locat-
ed more effectively. The Self
Check Out System is geared to
aid single Sailors who are only
purchasing small to medium
orders and want to get in and
get out. The handling of paper
checks are deposited and
withdrawn from your account
and the check is given back
to you."
The new registers are part
of a new contract agreement
with IBM, which will install

the new registers in all 284
Commissaries.
"I like the registers a lot, and
they are much better then the
registers I have used in town,"
said ET3 Eric Rash. "There is a
ladywho supervises and makes
sure you have your Military
Identification Card and help
you if are having trouble with
the machine. It was a real fast
change, I came in one day and
they were just here."'
The new self check out reg-
isters have new card scanners
that are more sensitive and
read all cards, with plans to
read EBT cards in the future.
Also when writing a check the
money will be automatically
draw from your account. This
eliminates the headaches of
bounced checks. The employ-
ees have taken to it well and
get better as they use it. And
as they use it more the bet-
ter and faster service will be.
This is just the start for the
Commissary, which has a new
rotisserie oven that will pro-
vide customers with rotisserie
chicken in four to five differ-
ent flavors in the next couple
months. Also plans for a sushi
bar are being prepared for the
not too distant future as well.
"The Commissary is doing
big things for the customer
along with and the cost of no
jobs and it isn't affecting our
prices," saidAnderson. "People
are optimistic about our future
and the Commissary is com-
mitted to giving good service
to our customers"

Kings Bay set to celebrate annual Submarine Ball

By MC2 Kimberly Clifford
Submarine Group Ten Public Affairs
Every year officer and
enlisted submariners
take time outto celebrate
the beginning of the greatest
submarine force in the world.
The Submarine Birthday Ball
is an honored tradition that
gives submariners a chance
to celebrate their service with
their shipmates, meet subma-
rine veterans from all eras and
speak with the leaders of the
submarine community, while
honoring their shipmates on
Eternal Patrol.
On April 18th and 19th,
Kings Bay Submariners will
examine the past, present and

future of the Silent Service at
the annual Submarine Ball.
"The Ball is a great place to
put together names and faces
of the people who support
this great community," said
Lieutenant Royal Spragio of the
Submarine Ball Committee.
The Officer's Ball will be
held at the Hyatt Regency in
Jacksonville, Fla. on April 18th.
The Enlisted Ball will be held
at the Jekyll Island Convention
Center on April 19th. The
formal events feature dinner,
dancing, guest speaker and a
tribute to the 66 submarines
that went to sea and never
returned.
"The guest speaker this year
is Vice Admiral John Donnelly,

it's being held at a primer
venue and it's going to be a
great party," Spragio said.
"In addition to the fun and
camaraderie, we remem-
ber why we do what we do.
It's one of the ways Senior
Submariners reinforce to
our Junior Shipmates how
proud and special Submarine
Service is," said Captain
Dave Volonino, Chief of Staff,
COMSUBGRU TEN, who is
also on the Submarine Ball
Committee.
"I enjoy the guest speaker
the most, they are always
inspirational, and it's such an
honor to have Vice Admiral
Donnelly. His schedule is very
busy and his speaking shows

Bill of sale important for used cars

By MC2(SW) Michael Wiss
Periscope staff
Everyone would like to
own a new car, but for
many, the sticker price
forces some to go the alternate
route of a used car. If you buy
from a car lot, there is a bill of
sale or contract to prove own-
ership of the vehicle. If you
buy your friend's hoopty, you
need something other than
the title and a handshake to
prove the heap is yours.
Sailors and Marines at NSB
Kings Bay are getting in trouble
for not having a documented
bill of sale when purchasing a
vehicle from a private owner-
ship. Georgia law requires any
person who purchases or sells
any vehicle must have a per-
manent record of these trans-
actions. The document must
contain the car identification
number, type and model of
the car or truck, the name and
address of the person selling
and purchasing the vehicle. It's
also a good idea, although it's
not required, to get the docu-
ment notarized. According
to NSB Court Liaison Officer
Michael Turckes, the bill of
sale is a protection device.
"The bill of sale protects
the seller from legal action if
the buyer commits a crime
with that vehicle;' he said. "If

trash bags, disposable gloves,
and informed about safety
procedures.
If your group wants to pick
up trash in unincorporated
areas of Camden County, you
can call the Randy Gunter with
the Solid Waste Authority, at
912-552-3785 or 912-729-4099
for information or to volun-
teer. For more information or
to volunteer in Woodbine, call
Beth Gowan at 912-576-3211.
Additional rally locations
maybe added if enough groups
and people volunteer. If your
group wants to participate in
the GAC but can not on April
19, call your respective area
contacts to arrange an alter-
nate pickup date and time.
"We are looking for many
local groups, businesses,
schools, organizations, and
individuals to help make this
the largest pickup effort ever in
Camden County," said Elaine
Headley-TA, St. Marys Great
American Cleanup coordina-
tor.
"If you or your group is
interested, I encourage you
to send representatives to
the next GAC organizational
meetings."
The next meeting is slated

someone buys a vehicle and
uses that as a bomb to blow
up a building, if there is no bill
of sale to prove ownership, the
seller could wind up in trouble
with the FBI."
When purchasing a vehicle,
the Georgia Department of
Motor Vehicles gives a person
30 days to register the vehicle.
The moment you purchase the
vehicle, you must have insur-
ance with the state agent from
where the vehicle is housed
at.
To get the car registered in
Georgia, you must have a bill
of sale and driver's license,
another reason to have the bill
of sale is if stopped by law
enforcement and the vehicle
is not registered, they can ask
to see the bill of sale or title.
If you fail to register the vehi-
cle in the time allotted, you
could face up to a $200 fine,
and a $500 fine if you don't
have insurance. According to
Turckes, you will pay a hefty
price is you don't follow the
rules and regulations of car
ownership.
"If people have a problem
or need some advice on reg-
istering their vehicle, they can
contact me for help at any
time," he said. "It would be a
lot easier to stop in for advice
rather than risk a fine or trou-
ble with your command."

building on Point Peter Road.
For more information about
the meeting or pickup efforts
in St. Marys, call Elaine at 912-
882-4415
Bill Coleman, Kingsland's
Great American Cleanup coor-
dinator, echoed Headley-TA's
call for volunteers.
"Call me or Ron Knox ahead
of time if you are a big group,
and we'll hook you up with
as large an area as you can
handle, but we want anybody
who wants to participate to
show up at the park for the
Kingsland pickup," he said.
They can be reached at 912-
729-5613.
To help solve litter chal-
lenges in Camden County, a
steering committee formed
recently to explore ways to
help keep Camden County tidy
throughout the year. Initial
plans include taking steps
towards becoming a certified
Keep Georgia Beautiful area.
The group also plans to pres-
ent a joint resolution to area
governments in the very near
future.
For additional information,
call Doug Cooper at 912-674-
9317.
"This committee, comprised
or Camden County volunteers,
has taken ownership of the lit-
ter challenges here, and they

Another major issue with
buying vehicles from a mili-
tary member is the base access
decal. According to base regu-
lations, the seller must remove
the base sticker and the license
plate from the vehicle, another
reason for the bill of sale, to
be able to travel to register
the car with no plates. If the
decal is not removed and the
new owner drives on base with
this, there can be an offense
of loss of base driving privi-
leges for three months per
offense. Also, all Sailors and
Marines on base must register
their vehicle with Kings Bay
Security the day they report
on base or buy a new or used
vehicle.
To register for base access (if
you have not registered your
car), you must show proof of
insurance, title, bill of sales,
a valid driver's license and a
military identification card.
You will be given a 30 day pass
to get your car registered. If
you let this time lapse, you will
not be given an extension.
"People don't realize when
a vehicle changes hands, the
base decal is registered to the
seller, it cannot be transferred
to anyone or any other vehi-
cle," Turckes said. "When you
sell the car, you have to turn
the decal in, because that is
registered to that person who

will greatly compliment the
many government and volun-
teer efforts already in place,"
said Steve Howard, Camden
County administrator. "The
trash cleanup on April 19 will
be a great opportunity for peo-
ple and organizations to help
make a real and visible com-
mitment to the cleanliness of
our community."
The main consideration
during any trash pickup along-
side area roads and waterway
is safety, according to Debra
Simeone, Kings Bay's safety
director.
"If you are driving on
Camden County roads dur-
ing the pickup time, please be
extra aware of the volunteers
and slow down, and give them
extra space if you can do so
safely," she said. "If you are
picking up trash, be aware of
your surroundings and watch
out for motorists."
Each year from March 1 to
May 31, millions of Americans
and tens of thousands of
people from Georgia and our
area volunteer to help beau-
tify highways, waterways and
communities during the annu-
al Great American Cleanup.
For additional information,
call the base's community rela-
tions director, Neil Guillebeau,
at 912-467-1380.

April is Sexual Assault

Awareness Month
By Staff
Sexual Assault is one of the most unreported crimes. Anyone
can become a victim of sexual assault. Every two minutes,
someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. One in
six women and one in thirty three men will be sexually assaulted
in his or her lifetime. Nearly three quarters of sexual assault vic-
tims know their assailant.
Established in 1994, the Navy Sexual Assault Victim
Intervention (SAVI) program offers a standardized, consistent,
victim-sensitive system to prevent and respond to sexual assault
Navy-wide. SAVI services are available to all Sailors and their
families, regardless of whether the sexual assault took place
on or off base. For additional information on the SAVI services
offered at Kings Bay, please call the Fleet and Family Support

REMEMBERING
I-

A HERO

Military Working Dog handler MA2 Shawn Kimble struggles
to read his speech for his good buddy and former partner
Prins' during the military working dog's remembrance cer-
emony April 4. "When I first found out about Prins' death,
it was in early October. I was in New York involved in
another tasking with a different dog," said Kimble. "He was
my favorite dog who I had been with for almost two years
and losing him hurt a lot. I'm just glad that people showed
up to give their support and I would like to thank the Coast
Guard for helping to put this together."

GREMLINS: You never know

to take care of "the jungle" It
is 80 degrees and beautiful! I
find that I gain a little energy
from the sun and fresh air! It's
great! I came inside to fill my
ice tea when I noticed that it is
nicer outside than it is inside.
"OK, I must have not switched
on the air all the way', I think to
myself. I go and look and it is
on. Hmmm. I'm in complete
denial. I get a chair and stand
on it and put my hand up to
a vent. Air is blowing, but it
isn't cold. I say to myself, "I
can fix this" I slowly walk out
and around my house to the
AC unit. I approach slowly
because I don't know what I
am going to find... It's on, but
the stupid fan isn't moving.
Crap. I did all the little "tests"
I have learned over the years
and nothing worked. I call the
AC repair company and they
come out. Hundreds of dol-
lars later, my AC is working.
After the repair man had
left, I got in my car to move it
into the garage and a warn-
ing light came on! For Pete's
Sake. This all happened in
less than a week!! I have over
three loads of laundry and I'm
scared to touch the washer
and dryer!
So, is it all a coincidence??
I guess I'll never know. But, I

deployment gremlins. In fact,
I hope I have made peace with
them by writing this column.
Sticking with my prior col-
umn, I have had some positive
moments. I have had a lot of
fun with the kids. It's exhaust-
ing being a single parent, but
it is also very rewarding to be
such a huge part of their lives.
An example would be that I
am coaching my daughter's
soccer team.
This is "Dad's territory"
since he is the soccer play-
er. With Dad away, the kids
were bummed not to have him
coach, so I decided to give it a
try. And even though I know
nothing about soccer and I am
learning along with the 4, 5,
and 6 year olds, I am having
a blast. It is something that I
would never have done if he
were home.
What are my goals for
this deployment?? Well, I have
a big list. A few would be:
Reading "Soccer for Dummies',
taking a class, and of course
what most women would say.

OF THE QUARTER

NSB Kings Bay recognized Sailor of the Quarter CS1 (SS) Kevin Bower, Junior Sailor of the Quarter PS2 (SW/AW/SCW)
Natasha Ayton, and Blue Jacket of the Quarter MASN Brittney Pride recently. All three received their awards for their
performances during the first quarter of 2008. "It is a great honor to have been selected for the Sailor of the Quarter after
having just received it for the 3rd Quarter of last year," said Bower. "The competition for this quarter was very tough and
I feel that it was a great honor to be selected above the other qualified Sailors. I would have to say that my chain of com-
mand is the main reason for me receiving this award again."
