Sea Dragon calls Kings Bay home
By MCSN Kenneth Abbate

M aritime Force
Protection Unit
added a new mem-
ber to the NSB Kings Bay fam-
ily Dec. 8 with the Sea Dragon,
an 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter.
The commissioning ceremony
for the new cutter is scheduled
for Jan. 14, 2008.
The Sea Dragon was built in
early October in Lockport, La.
before being transported to
St. Petersburg, Fla. where the
electrical equipment on board
was outfitted. While there, the
crew performed training exer-
cises to prepare for their sea
preparations. After passing
their sea preparations, they
had a stop in Key West, Fla.
to refuel and a stop in Miami
for some rest and relaxation.
Following their stop in Miami,
the crew headed to Mayport,
Fla. before departing for Kings
Bay.
"We are very excited to be
apart of the Kings Bay fam-
ily and help with the mission
by continuing our partner-
ship with the Coast Guard and
the Navy," said Sea Dragon
Commanding Officer Lt. j.g.
Kyra Van Echo. "We are an
important part of the mission
here at Kings Bay and we are
glad to be here."

emony for the new cutter is scheduled for Jan. 14, 2008.
a crew of ten people and is
mainly used for interdiction
operations, such as migrant
and drug operation, and
search rescue mission, which
are typical of Coast Guard
ships.
For NSB Kings Bay, the Sea
Dragon's main mission will be
to escort submarines in and
out of the base.
"The Sea Dragon willbe able
to go off shore for extended
periods of time and will be
used to help bring submarines
down and back for escorting
purposes," said Maritime Force
Protection Unit Commanding
Officer Cmdr. Alan Reagan. "It
will be able to execute the mis-
sion accordingly because it is
a very maneuverable, fast and
just and all around good boat
for this job"'
According to NSB Kings Bay
Commanding Officer Capt.
Wes Stevens, this is a step for-
ward into securing the safety of
transportation of the subma-
rines in and out of the base.
"The Sea Dragon is an
important step in our contin-
ued transportation protection
systems mission, which was
the main reason why Maritime
Force Protection Unit was
stood up," said Stevens. "This
gives us and the Coast Guard
the significant capability to
help protect SSBN's and their
transient in and out of the sea.
From that point of view and
because of its size and the
capabilities that it has, it can
operate in increased weather
conditions, which gives us
greater flexibility so we are not
as restricted byweather condi-
tions. Also it's ability to carry a
slow boat detachment and its
ability to handle heavier weap-
ons, it increases our defen-
sive posture. Furthermore, it
gives the Coast Guard a bet-
ter platform to execute their
law enforcement missions
because it is more visible, so
that a violator would notice
that they are present and a
security zone is set around the
SSBN's."
According to Reagan, he
feels that bringing the Sea
Dragon to Kings Bay was a
great idea and he is happy that
they can welcome some news
faces to the command.
"I am extremely happy that
this has happened. It is going
to be very helpful for us to
complete our mission more
efficiently and the extra sup-
port is just wonderful to have,"
he said.
"When we get the other 87-
foot cutter, we will try to have
them rotate in and out so that
we always have one handy for
any mission that comes our
way."
Lots in store for

Enjoying the holidays while being away from family and
friends can often be very difficult for a person. But there
is a remedy for the holiday woes Single Sailors! Moral,
Welfare and Recreation is chock-full of events through out
the holidays to keep the Sailors and Marines of NSB Kings
Bay jolly and joyful. Both the Big EZ and the Liberty Center
will have events going on throughout the month of December
and on towards the New Year. All events held at Oscars are
free events. Events held at the Big EZ are a mixture of free and
charged events.
"At the Liberty Center our job is to give the Single Sailors
and Marines a place to go and activities to do," said Marianne
Aloszka, the recreation specialist for the Liberty Center. "We
want them to feel like we are a part of their extended family,
and that we are here for them."
Oscars will feature "Laid Back with Liberty" Dec. 18 at 10
a.m. Gamers better bring their "A" game for the Playstation
3(PS3) challenge. The game will be Major League Baseball
2007. Along with food, there will be prizes awarded to the first,
second, and third places. On Dec. 21 at 7 p.m., Sailors and
Marines get the opportunity to put their construction skills
to the test with a Ginger Bread House Build-off. Oscars will
provide the materials and the venue. Sailors and Marine just
need to bring their imaginations. Christmas-eve Oscars will
host a "Holiday Cheer Party" starting at noon. There will be
game challenges on their PS3s, XBOXs, and computers with
prizes given though-out the night to top players. On Christmas
day, there will be "Pass the Present" at Oscars at noon. Here

ents. There will also be food and other games like the Reindeer
Dart Toss! In addition, there will be free gift wrapping service
by the "Liberty Elves" at Oscars until Dec. 20. All materials will
be provided.

to know the local," said Ann Myhre, recreation specialist for
the Big EZ. "We feel that this is a great opportunity for us to be
able to fill a void in peoples live with a place they can come to
and feel comfortable, we are like the "Cheers" of NSB."

Hard working and dedi-
cated are some of the
words that could be
used to describe MA2 Albert
King and his boxing career.
King proved to everyone
that he is deserving of those
words by winning the State
Championship in boxing
March 3-4, Georgia's Golden
Gloves March 29-31 and the
Florida State Police Athletic
League Boxing tournament
Nov. 3-4.
King has been attached to
the Marine Corps Security
Force Company at NSB Kings
Bay since Sept. 2005 and has
been boxing ever since. At
the age 24, King is married
to his wife, Natalie, and has
two children Sa'nayvia (4)
and Aubriana (2). King got
into boxing at a young age
watching his uncle, Terrance
Daniels, who was an amateur
boxer in Houston, Texas.
"When I was younger, my
uncle was an amateur boxer
and he used to mess around
with me and my cousin by
teaching us how to punch by
using his hands as mitts," said
King. "After that, through years
of growing up and watching
boxing on TV, I just fell in love
with it"'
Since the start of his box-
ing career, he has trained at
the World Class Boxing gym
in downtown Kingsland with
boxing coach Steve Bell.
According to Bell, he thinks
that King is a slick fighter.
When he first trained him,
King was a right handed fight-
er, but Bell decided to train

him to be a Southpaw or a left
handed fighter to help him be
more dominant in the ring.
"At first, he (King) had very
bad balance from the right
hand side, so I converted him
to a Southpaw, which a lot
of boxing coaches do'" said
Bell. "With his style, he has a
smart way of boxing because
his thinks a lot while he is in
the ring, which is very impor-
tant. The main thing we are
trying to work with now is to
make sure he stops putting
his hands down. He needs to
understand to keep his hands
up all the time; otherwise he
will get knocked in the face
too much. But with time he
is still improving and it is just
another challenge he is willing
and ready to overcome.'
One of the many things that
coach Bell likes to give King
credit for is his great work
ethic. According to Bell, dur-
ing his first year of boxing, he
struggled to get a win. Even
though this would have caused
some rookie boxers to take it
slow and rest a little, King was
ready for the challenge.
"He has worked very hard
to get where he is right now
and gives it everything he
has. Everything he has won,
he has earned with constant
training and dedication. He is
also willing to learn and he is
a quick study, which is rare
in most boxers today. When
I first got him, he had a really
rough first year, with his first
two fights being stopped by
TKO. Nevertheless, after each
tournament he would be right
back in this gym working even
harder to improve'" said Bell.
"When 2007 came around, he
set goals for himself and has

Volunteers Needed For USO Welcome Center
The USO Welcome Center Jacksonville International
Airport (JIA) is a wonderful facility providing a safe haven
to military members. Our scheduled hours are 9 a.m. to
midnight Monday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. Friday
through 9 p.m. Sunday, 365 days a year. Our goal is to
remain open 24/7, but we need your help. Visitors to the
Welcome Center are either departing the area and need a
place to "hang out" until their flight leaves, or are arriving
and need assistance traveling to their duty station. Due
to the time involved in training, operational procedures,
and security issues, we only accept volunteers who can
make a weekly commitment to a specific shift. Individuals
must be able to attend training before they can volunteer.
Training is generally held on Monday, Friday, or Saturday
evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. In order to volunteer, you must
have access to email and be able to check daily. For spe-
cific details regarding Volunteering at the USO JIA, please

your vehicle, the gym locker room, or other places where
it could be stolen.

On The Home Front
Traditions give us something to share
By Beth Wiruth
Periscope contributor
Each month I host a
Dessert & Coffee in my
home for local military
spouses. I love this time with
spouses! November's Dessert
& Coffee was themed as a holi-
day cookie exchange. I had a
wonderful group of ladies and
outstanding goodies (by the
way, did you know that we
do not have to count calories
from December 15th through
January 2nd?). As we sampled
each other's goodies we also
discussed our favorite holiday
traditions.
Holiday traditions can be
amazing and bring so much
to our experience. Some tra-
ditions leave me choked up
and teary-eyed, some just
crack me up and others, well,
they leave me puzzled at their
significance and origins. But
mostly they enrich our lives.
Traditions keep us in touch
with our past as we build our
future.
My friend, Nancy, told me
aboutthe traditional Christmas
Ham in their home. The year's
cook would slice off each end
of the ham and place it in the
pan for baking. After years
and years of this tradition they
talked about why each end of
the ham was removed. They
decided to ask the oldest living
matriarch of the family. Great-
grandma unraveled the mys-
tery, "Because it wouldn't fit in
mom's pan without slicing off
the ends'. Needless to say that
tradition ended that year.
I grew up in a home where
the Nativity scene was brought
out each year and fully set up,
including the baby Jesus. I was
visiting a friend years later at
the holiday's. I noticed the
baby Jesus was missing from
the Nativity scene. I thought
to myself, 'Oh, how sad, they
lost baby Jesus' I mentioned
it to my host who chuckled
and said, "But baby Jesus isn't
born yet. We don't put him out
till Christmas morning'. Duh.
Now that is my tradition.
Tammy, a guest at my
Dessert & Coffee, talked about
a tradition she hopes to make
a part of her own. Her grand-
mother would bake Christmas
confections for days and pre-
pare a special plate for each
family member with their
favorite holiday cookies. Such
love would go into each plate.
Learning about the tradi-
tions of others, even other
quite different from us can
bring richness to our lives.
Living in a Washington, DC
suburb Tanya found her com-
munity was included a large
orthodox Jewish communi-
ty. Befriended by her Jewish
neighbor Belinda, Tanya
learned much about Jewish
holidays and traditions that
added greater significance to
her own Christian traditions.
Katie, a new Navy wife from
West Virginia is looking for-
ward to learning her husband's
traditions, which differ from
her own, as well as starting
her own traditions for her fam-
ily. "My family didn't have any
special traditions for the holi-
days but his family has many.
I'm looking forward to adopt-
ing his traditions and develop-
ing at least one or two that will
become uniquely ours."
All of my guests at the
Holiday Cookie Dessert &
Coffee agreed, the best tradi-
tions are those that remind us
of the love of family, friends
and the importance of the hol-
iday. When parted from family
it is traditions that can offer
security and lend the needed
connection to family.
Stephen Greydanus, in
reviewing Fiddler on the Roof,
states, "...tradition acts as both
a buffer and support in the
precariousness of life"'

Tradition can be elaborate
or simple. Tradition can be an
annual trip to cut down your
own tree, baking cookies for
Santa, an annual holiday news-
letter to family the reading of a
favorite book or story together.
Traditions give us something
to remember from the past,
practice in the present, antici-
pate for the future, and are
enhanced when shared with
loved ones.
May you have a holiday full
of meaningful and special tra-
ditions this year.

the City of St. Marys will host
"Christmas in the Park," a
fun, family oriented event,
on Saturday (Dec. 15) at St.

leads to the annual "Yule Log"
and also a prize of $100.00.
Afterward, Santa Claus comes

4 THE PERISCOPE, NSB KINGS BAY, Thursday, December 13, 2007
Former Marine Charles Judd shares his story with visiting Marines from NSB Kings Bay at the Carl Vincent Veterans Administration Hospital Dec. 10. Lance Corporal Hagan Hunter notices
an unfamiliar medal on Judd's uniform and shows it to his fellow Marines with enthusiasm. "Mr. Judd never did remember what that medal was," said Hunter. "It is amazing how much time
has passed and the differences between the Marine uniforms of then and now. But our uniform is still recognized because when we came to visit, Judd instantly knew he was in the company
of his fellow Marines."
Sailors, Marines
spread holiday
cheer at VA Hospital
By MCSA Dmitry Chepusov
Periscope staff
After more than four hours of travel, this bus filled with NSB Kings Bay Sailors and gift bags
donated by Camden County locals and decorated by local children arrived at the Carl Vincent
Veterans Administration Hospital in Dublin, Ga., for the annual holiday visit Dec. 10. The
Sailors, who are volunteers from various Kings Bay commands, wasted no time as they unload-
ed the gifts and prepared themselves to spread holiday cheer throughout the hospital.
More than 50 Kings Bay Sailors and
Marines visited the Carl Vinson
Veterans Administration Medical
Center in Dublin, Ga., Dec. 10 to deliver paper
bags decorated by children from the Kings
Bay Child Development Center, Crooked River
Elementary School and Boys & Girls Club filled
with thoughtful gifts of toiletries and crossword
puzzles.
Having chartered an uncomfortable bus,
Sailors from various NSB Kings Bay commands
and Marines from Marine Corps Security Forces
Company endured a long trip north 1-95 and
west along 1-16 to the medical center located
just east of Macon.
Once the gifts were off loaded, Recreation
Therapy Supervisor Cecilia Jones introduced
the Sailors to the residents and staff.
"I have seen many smiles from our patients
today," said Jones. "They see the same routine
every day, but when they have Sailors and
Marines in their dress uniforms come to visit
them, it brightens their day tremendously."
The atmosphere at Carl Vinson was indeed
cheery, as six groups of Sailors and Marines
walked from hall to hall and floor to floor,
handing out gifts, and spending the available
time to get to know some of the hospital's
residents. The brown paper grocery bags, each
individually decorated and painted by a child,
contained various useful toiletries, magazines
and crossword puzzles. Some even had 'thank
you' and 'Happy Holidays' cards. Although
many of the patients were in poor condition to
hold a real conversation during the visit, their
smiles spoke to the servicemembers more than
words.
"I think our trip was a great success," said
RP3 John Layman, who organized the visit. "I
could not have asked for more gift bags, and I
know that the halls that I visited today are filled
with ecstatic veterans."
"We saw a lot of outstanding veterans today,
and we listened to many stories about their
service," said Sgt. Tyler Dahl of the Marine
Corps Security Forces Company. "We were
glad to come out here and wish them a Merry
Christmas, because we know that not a whole
lot of people visit them. I have several family
members who reside in VA homes and I know
that they rather open up to and talk to service-
members than anyone else. As a result of this
visit my Marines found out that our service
brings a lot of good, be it now or during World
War II, and the veterans received a lot of posi-
tive feedback from them in return."
Many of the servicemembers in attendance
felt that they benefited from the visit as much
as the veterans did.
"I met many cool guys with several inspiring
service stories," said MTSA Thomas Skurk of
MT C-School at Trident Training Facility. "It
was a good experience to be able to see where
I may end up 20 or 30 years from now. Most of
all, it was a very humbling experience, because
all of them started out at the bottom of the lad-
der, where I am now, and I think it is important
to recognize their sacrifices and accomplish-
ments."
The Marine Corps Security Forces Company of NSB Kings Bay quickly unloads a bus filled
with holiday gift bags at the Carl Vincent VA Hospital in Dublin, Ga., Dec. 10. Although they
brought their own collection of gifts and had traveled separately, these Marines joined the
Ranks of Sailors to visit the hospital patients one by one.
After traveling more than four hours, these Sailors are eager to meet the residents of the Carl
Vincent Veterans Administration Hospital in Dublin, Ga. Pushing a cart filled with gift bags and
equipped with motivation and a set of Christmas carols, they make their way down the hospital
halls toward the patient rooms.

West Virginia Gold makes namesake visit

Commanding Officer, USS West
Virginia Gold
The commanding officer,
chief of the boat and
17 other crewmembers
of USS West Virginia (SSBN
736) (Gold) paid a visit to
their namesake state Nov. 7
- 12, participating in a variety
of activities to provide com-
munity service, enhance crew
morale, and to just plain have
fun.
The crew used the West
Virginia Children's Home in
Elkins, W. Va. as a base of oper-
ations. The home provides
residential social services to
youth ages 11 to 17 from all
55 counties in West Virginia.
The facility is licensed for 25
residents, and provides private
rooms, semiprivate rooms and
dormitory-style housing. The
commissioning crew of USS
West Virginia established the
relationship with the WVCH in
1990.
The home's programs are tai-
lored to individual needs, but
typically focus on developing
skills and techniques to help
residents develop positive life
skills and overcome unhealthy
thinking and behavior. The
home also includes a school
that is fully accredited by the
West Virginia Department of
Education where residents are
instructed in all required sub-
ject matter areas.
West Virginia Children's
Home Director, Mr. Carson
Markley, who attended West
Virginia's commissioning in
1990, appreciates the special
bond between the ship and
the home. "The children at the
WestVirginia Children's Home
have generally been neglect-
ed, abused and feel that no
one cares for them. The crew
of USS West Virginia, almost
immediately upon arriving at
the home, began to show con-
cern and a real understanding
for not just a few, but all the
kids they came into contact
with," Markley said.
While staying at the home,
West Virginia Sailors helped
to prepare and serve meals,
cleaned the dishes, conduct-
ed some deep cleaning "field
days" and then participated
in sporting events after the
chores were done. Basketball
and ping pong are among the
favorite activities, in addition
to cards and board games.
"This is a great experience, I'm
already getting my name on
the list for the next trip," said
MM2 Perry Duelfer.
"The West Virginia
Children's Home has an extra
house on the school grounds
which they offer for our use. It
allows us to visit the state for
longer periods of time without
having to pay for hotels. They
also feed us, which really helps
us bond with the staff and stu-
dents," said Cmdr. Christopher
Anklam, commanding officer,
USS West Virginia (SSBN 736)
(Gold).
On Nov. 7, the crew drove
to Huntington, W.Va., and
conducted a recruiting/infor-
mational briefing at Marshall
University. University
President, Dr. Stephen J. Kopp,
was pleased by the Navy atten-
dance. "Marshall hasn't had
an engineering school for sev-
eral years, and we are getting
ready to break ground on a
new facility. I think that it's
great that nuclear submariners
can talk to my Introduction to
Engineering students about
one possible career path
in engineering," Kopp said.
Anklam presented Kopp a
plaque and a ship's coin.
The next day, West Virginia
University provided game
tickets to the crew to watch
West Virginia defeat Louisville,
38-31 in a nationally televised
football game in Morgantown,
W.Va. The crew enjoyed the
tailgating expertise of the local
Mountaineers and an excit-

Nov. 9 was devoted to spend-
ing time at the West Virginia
Children's Home. The Captain
and about eight crewmembers
gave an informational, inter-
active seminar about subma-
rining to the students.
The weekend was spent in
Clarksburg, W.Va. The crew
was recognized as part of the
local VFW Post #573 Veterans
Day ceremonies, and was
invited to march in the local
parade. Several of the men

New USO Welcome Center at Jacksonville Airport opens
By Dalia Mousa
Builders Care
Aribbon cutting ceremonywas held Friday
to officially open the new USO Welcome
Center at Jacksonville International
Airport (JIA). The new center gives the USO
more space to serve their patrons who are
traveling at home and abroad. The new center
is approximately 900 square feet, nearly three
times larger than the previous center.
JIA had a USO room for military members to
relax while waiting for a flight, but because of
the increase in travel, the Jacksonville Aviation
Authority decided to donate a much larger
room to the USO.
"The USO is extremely appreciative of
Builders Care for their energy, the resources
and the creativity that went into developing this
state-of-the-art welcome center for all military
personnel.
The fact that it's located in a more open area,
it is more accessible and will be visited more by
military personnel in the future," said retired
Navy Adm. Ken Belise.
When Builders Care was asked to build
the new USO, they decided to bring in two
companies that would make the USO a home
away from home for all military personnel.
Sisler-Johnston Interior Design and Woodsman
Kitchen & Floors jumped onboardwith Builders
Care to help with the project.
Judith Sisler-Johnston, owner of Sisler-
Johnston Interior Design, got involved because
the greatness of the project was beyond words.
"I am a mother and if it was my child I would
want them to be in a home-like environment
if they were in that kind of situation. It was
important to me for them to have all the neces-
sities of a home," said Sisler-Johnston.
Builders Care brought Sisler-Johnston into
the project because it was her experience as an
interior designer to turn the commercial space
into a warm home.
Sisler-Johnston told Bill Wilson, executive
director of Builders Care, that she wanted to
design a place that would be therapeutic.
The first thing she looked at was the Haskell
Company's interior space plan. After color selec-
tion and cabinetry ideas, Woodsman Kitchen &
Floors came into the picture and implemented
Sisler-Johnston's design. Woodsman Kitchen
& Floors got involved because it was a very
worthy project and they always support the
Builders Care mission.
Sisler-Johnston worked with Janie Boyd-
Strangi, senior account executive for Woodsman
Kitchen & Floors and explained that she want-
ed the cabinets to be a dark rich wood and the
cabinet handles to have a contemporary flare.
"Janie wanted to bring Judith's vision to life
and make it a home away from home. She's a
pro when it comes to learning what customers
want," said Nancy Love, vice president of mar-
keting for Woodsman Kitchen & Floors.
The details of any project are where the
unique character of a building is developed.
Fine details are a hallmark of both Sisler-
Johnston Interior Design and Woodsman
Kitchen & Floors.
"It is truly our pleasure to work on this very
worthy project. We wanted to make it feel
as close to home as possible. These young
military people are the best this nation has and
they deserve the best we can give them," said
Wilson.

BOXING: One step closer to Navy Boxing Team
Continued from Page 1
succeeded on each one. His first year was just his roughest year,
but now he has to move forward and not stop on the road toward
his biggest goal"'
Every boxer's biggest goal is to turn pro and be successful
when they get there. Presently, King's biggest goal is to make the
All-Navy Boxing Team. He is currently pursuing that dream in
California as All-Navy Boxing Team tryouts run through Feb. 3,
2008. Servicemembers who make their respective boxing teams
will compete in the Armed Forces Boxing Championship Feb. 3
-8.
"Right now each fight is just getting me one step closer to my
chance to tryout for the Navy boxing team," said King. "All I can
do right now is to keep training as hard as I can and hope my
hard work pays off. Eventually, my goal is to turn pro but until
that happens I am still going to train hard and hope for the
best.'
Many people love boxing for different reasons. Some people
because of the violence and some for the money that could be
involved, but King loves boxing because of the hard work and
challenges that lie ahead before each fight.
"I love boxing because of the training involved with it. Boxing
is not just a sport that you can just pick up and expect it to work-
out out good for you in the end'" said King. "You have to train
very hard in order to get your heart rate up and get your endur-
ance as well as your strength up so you do not get hurt so easily
in the ring. It is a good way to relieve stress and just the thrill of
being in the ring getting ready to fight is exciting."
Aside from his uncle being his main inspiration for loving
boxing and pursuing it as a career, his wife, Natalie, has been
there every step of the way supporting him on all his career deci-
sions.
"My biggest supporter has always been my wife. Ever since
I started, she fell in love with it as much as I did, especially at
fights when she is coaching me from her seat," said King.
"She was the one who encouraged me to keep trying after
my first year, to stay with it and improve my skills as I move
forward."
After having a great second year with three championships
and improving his record to 10-3, King feels that he must stay
focused and concentrate on his next obstacle, which is the All-
Navy Boxing tryout.
"I felt really proud of myself after this year, but my coach and
I sat down and talked about not letting this success going to my
head too much'" he said. "He said I still have a long way to go
and for me to focus on the Navy boxing tryout."

NAMESAKE: Trip made an impact
Continued from Page 6
newspaper. "Taking part in
the Veteran's Day parades
showed me that my dedica-
tion to the Navy is appreciated.
The people of West Virginia's
patriotism reinstilled a sense
of pride in my job," said ET1
Ryan Gillette.
On Nov. 11, the crew was
on hand at the West Virginia
Veterans Nursing Home, par-
ticipating in a ceremony to
welcome the first two patients.
Exactly one year earlier, West
Virginia was in Clarksburg to
participate in the dedication
ceremony for the same facil-
ity. The crew presented a holi-
day Ensign that was flown on
board USS West Virginia to the
nursing home, and one small
Ensign each to the first two
patients. "The great people of
West Virginia make you feel
as though you are family and
very proud of the sacrifice
our families endure to ensure
the countries freedom," said

Virginia Gold's chief of the
boat.
The crew also went next
door to the West Virginia VA
Medical Center, and partici-
pated in their ceremony rec-
ognizing two West Virginians
recently wounded in Iraq and
sent home.
The weekend was very patri-
otic, moving and emotional,
and made a large impact on
the junior sailors who made
the trip. "Honestly, before
this trip I couldn't find West
Virginia on a map. Now I
would encourage everyone to
go on a trip like this, it makes
your service worth while.
They are so appreciative;' said
ST2 Nicholas Church.
The crew participated in
another Veteran's Day parade
Nov. 12, this time in the his-
toric town of Welch, W.Va.
Welch is famous for having the
longest, continuously running
Veteran's Day parade in the
nation, not missing one since
1919. Manyfamous dignitaries
have been the Grand Marshal,
including Harry S. Truman
twice, and Vice President
Lyndon B. Johnson, scarcely
two weeks before President
Kennedy was assassinated.
This year, Governor Joe
Manchin III presided, and
after the parade, he personally
presented "Friends of West
Virginia" certificates to each
of the 19 crewmembers who
made the trip.
The governor said, address-
ing the crowd and refer-
ring to his cruise on board
USS West Virginia, "When I
sailed with them in August, I
couldn't believe all the pride
and love they had for our
state," Manchin said. "There
were only four native West
Virginians in the gold crew,
but all of them wanted me to
know the commitment they
had for the sub and for the
state"
