Capt. John Litherland, commanding officer USS Florida (SSGN 728) (Gold), escorts Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue to the
bridge of the Florida. Although the size of the submarine was an impressive sight, Perdue was fascinated by the view from
the bridge, the beauty of the sea and the many more missions the USS Florida will be a part of. "I was memorized by
the flow of the water. The colors that were generated were really fascinating," he said. "The submarine is a very complex
machine and I think the mission of the vessel will serve the United States in many ways for years to come."

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue got an up close and per-
sonal view of how a United States Submarine oper-
ates during his one-day deployment aboard the USS
Florida (SSGN 728) Aug. 30 and 31. He became the first active
governor to deploy with a submarine at NSB Kings Bay.
Perdue got a first hand look at the many different jobs that
must be performed for a submarine on deployment. Although
he was only underway for an overnight stay, the governor was
impressed with the performance of the crew.
"There is only one word to describe the experience and
that is awesome," Perdue said. "It was incredible, I gained a
new respect for the work ethnic and professionalism of our
American Sailors, the jobs they do on that complex vessel
were just fantastic."
The governor was not the only first-time Sailor on the sub-
marine, as this was also the first underway period for STSSA
Romero Julian who recently reported for duty. According to
Julian, this was an unexpected thrill he can tell the folks back

FY08 Defense Appropriations Bill
contains several new local projects

By MCSN Dmitry Chepusov
Periscope staff

A 13-ounce eye in the sky may undergo development and
testing in St. Marys if the Senate passes the new Defense
appropriations Bill supported by Georgia Congressman
Jack Kingston for FY08. At a cost of $459.6 billion, the bill may
go into effect Oct. 1, giving the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
project run by Aerospace Missions Corporation more than $3
million.
Other projects to affect NSB Kings Bay directly if the bill is
passed include $300,000 to go to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, which
is popular at the base, as well as the Real-time Identification and
Total Asset Visibility (RITAV) program, which would receive
$500,000. "Aerospace Missions Corporation is going to be a great
addition to St. Marys," said Congressman Jack Kingston about
the UAV project. "The company is bringing coveted high-tech
jobs to the area and, more importantly, by applying its advanced
technology on unmanned aerial vehicles, it provides our ser-
vicemen and women state-of-the-art equipment in Iraq and
Afghanistan."
According to the company's CEO Rick Morgan, Aerospace
Missions is headquartered in El Paso, Texas, but are moving
a part of their operation to St. Marys for the Hand Launched
Unmanned Aerial System High Performance Payload program
to develop a small, lightweight vehicle that can be launched
by hand. The new facility will be located on Osborne Street
in downtown St. Marys. This location, bordering St. Marys
River and Nassau County in Florida, is ideal for test flights over
the marsh and waterways. "This is wonderful news that will
bring high tech jobs to St. Marys, Georgia, and the district has
Congressman Jack Kingston to thank," said Morgan. "We are
developing advanced imaging technology for small UAVs that
will provide our military with much needed technology to detect
our enemies on the battlefield and enable our commanders to
assess the battle at the front lines with better precision."
If the defense bill is passed, the battle at the front lines will
also benefit from a company called Advanced Solutions for
Tomorrow (ASFT). Using $500,000 to develop RITAV ASFT will
use advanced technology to achieve better precision when it
comes to tracking military supplies.
"This will allow ASFT to partner with Kings Bay to introduce
a program that will lower costs of asset management while
improving productivity and efficiency," said Stephen Turner,
vice president of business development at ASFT.
A pilot program to be tried at Kings Bay, RITAV will use a
unique identification number assigned to every military item on
base and will be able to track all military assets using the latest
advances in scanning and inventory technology.
"The introduction of the RITAV program to Kings Bay reflects
an ongoing commitment to equipping Georgia's military facili-
ties with the state-of-the-art technologies that they need to sup-
port our armed forces;'," said Kingston. "This pilot program will
steer the Navy's course for years to follow."
One more positive effect of the new defense bill would be the
funds made available for impact aid to Camden County schools.
Impact aid is money provided to help offset the lack of tax reve-
nue from property such as base housing, which is greatly needed
to help pay for education. "The Camden County School system
has greatly benefited from impact aid;'," Kingston said. "Last year,
they received more than $6.4 million from both the Department
of Education and the Department of Defense. These funds were
used to improve facilities and provide Camden's teachers with
the best resources possible to educate our children."

Let the Navy College Learning Center help you meet your goals

By NCLC Staff
Have you been putting off enrolling in the Navy College
Learning Center (NCLC) because you're going out to
sea, you're going to transfer soon, you're not a comput-
er wiz or maybe even because you'll be retiring soon? Enough of
the excuses. NCLC Kings Bay provides free self-paced academic
skills training for adult learners. Don't put off enrolling any lon-
ger. NCLC work can transfer with you. Your workwith our center
can be sent to any of the other NCLC locations worldwide (check
with us to find out the various locations).
NCLC can get you started or refresh your knowledge in math,
science, history, English, and a host of other subjects. It can pre-
pare you for the GED, ASVAB, SAT, CPE or many other academic
exams.
Even if you're getting ready to deploy, enroll in NCLC and get
started now. Your records are saved on computer, and they'll still
be here when you get back to continue your studies. When you
return you can start up right where you left off. Our scheduling is
flexible to adjust to any military schedule. Granted, you do have
to put forth the effort and devote time to your education, but it's

well worth it. Also, military members, please encourage your
spouse to use the NCLC before, during, and after your deploy-
ment. This is a free educational benefit available to all active
duty, retired, reservists, and their spouses too.
If you're getting close to transfer in your career, we'd like to
challenge you to enroll in NCLC during the time that you have
here at Kings Bay. This is an additional educational benefit
offered to you, so why not make good use of it. Your coursework
can be sent to the NCLC nearest your next duty station, and you
can continue your academic work there. But, the key is to get
started here first.
You don't need to be a computer expert to enroll with NCLC.
Yes, it is computer-based training, but the facilitators will assist
you in getting started. It's an easy, painless way to begin to use
a computer and learn to move around the menus with a point
and click. And there's always a facilitator available for personal
assistance.
Anyone who's preparing to retire from the military can enroll

Volunteers Needed For USO Welcome Center
The USO Welcome Center Jacksonville International
Airport (JIA) is a wonderful facility providing a safe haven
to military members. Our scheduled hours are 9 a.m. to
midnight Monday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. Friday
through 9 p.m. Sunday, 365 days a year. Our goal is to
remain open 24/7, but we need your help.
Visitors to the Welcome Center are either departing the
area and need a place to "hang out" until their flight leaves,
or are arriving and need assistance traveling to their
duty station. Since opening on Veteran's Day 2004, we've
assisted more than 7,000 visitors annually and continue
to receive many expressions of gratitude. Due to the time
involved in training, operational procedures, and security
issues, we only accept volunteers who can make a weekly
commitment to a specific shift. Individuals must be able
to attend training before they can volunteer. Training is
generally held on Monday, Friday, or Saturday evenings
from 5 to 9 p.m. In order to volunteer, you must have
access to email and be able to check daily. For specific
details regarding Volunteering at the USO JIA, please email

Better Business Bureau's 'Military Line'
r-

By Beth Wiruth
Periscope contributor

Karin visited her local
mechanic for a 'sound'
coming from her car.
This particular business spe-
cifically advertised to military
bytelling them, "We'll take
care of your car and your fam-
ily while you are gone." The
shop told Karin she was facing
three issues with her car and
a bill of $867 for the repairs.
Karin agreed, had the repairs
performed and paid the bill.
A few weeks after her service
member's return from deploy-
ment the sound returned.
Karin mentioned it to her
husband, lamenting another
bill on their six year-old vehi-
cle. Karin's husband looked
under the hood and discov-
ered the sound was from the
hood prop that had come lose
from the retention clasp. He
then looked at the receipt and
checked the parts that were to
have been replaced on his car
only to discover the original
parts still in the vehicle. They
were the victim of an unethi-
cal business and they weren't
alone. Are you familiar with
the BBB or the Better Business
Bureau? The BBB is about trust
and ethical behavior in the
marketplace. It is a non-profit
organization whose members

must attain high standards for
ethical behavior and business
practices, and maintain them,
to obtain and retain member-
ship.
A large part of the mission
of the BBB is consumer educa-
tion and advocacy. These ser-
vices are provided for free and
include classes, information,
educational materials and
advocacy to include arbitra-
tion. Educated consumers are
less likely to become a victim
to scams or unethical busi-
nesses.
The BBB saw service mem-
bers targeted by unethical and
predatory business practices
and responded to the situa-
tion. The BBB Military Linewas
established in 2003. The BBB
Military Line is a partner in
the DoD Financial Readiness
Campaign and as such has
Memos of Understanding
(MOU) with the Army, Navy,
Coast Guard and Air Force
and is currently working on
one with the Marine Corp.
Holly Petraeus, a military
wife of 33 years and Director
of the BBB Military Line states,
"We want service members
and their families to know
about the free services that
are available to them from
the BBB. Nationally the BBB
Military Line maintains web-
sites, publishes free eNews-

letters and custom education
products. On the local level, of
which there are 164 branches,
the BBB reports on millions of
businesses and charities; con-
sumer scam alerts; briefings
and classes; and free dispute
resolution if a consumer has a
problem with a business."
By going to their website,
www.military.bbb.org or
www.navy.bbb.org (also for
Army, Air Force, Coast Guard
and Marines; replace "Navy"
with your branch) you will find
alerts, tools to check on pro-
spective businesses and chari-
ties that interest you, consum-
er tips, sign up for military line
alerts and so much more. The
site even posts opportunities
for military families such as
the current free oil change for
spouses of deployed service
members (go to the site for
more info).
Tammie Wilburn, Family
Readiness Group (FRG) board
member observed the classes
provided by the local branch
of the BBB are a great event for
an FRG meeting. "The classes
are interactive, practical and
fun not 'death by power-
point" Petreaus points out.
The classes developed for mil-
itary families were originally
developed for teens to help
them understand the nature of

The arts impact student performance

By Paul Kraack
Periscope contributor

In the August 21 issue
of Sports Illustrated,
Alexander Wolff's story
about the plight of New
Orleans schools two years
post-Katrina, looked at a clear-
ly difficult and tragic scenario,
focusing on the problems of
a reduced population in key
parts of the city and the prob-
lems of building infrastructure
- schools, businesses, roads,
buildings without tax reve-
nue or population to use, work
in and support the facilities.
In his piece, Wolff notes that
one of the areas lost to the city
is the community and educa-
tional sports programs.
One of the persons Wolff
talked to for his essay was Ron
Gearing, athletic director of the
Orleans Parish public schools.
Gearing, Wolff says, looks at
the emptiness of the neigh-
borhoods today and wants to
weep. His concern? That his
community is losing kids that
should be in school in their
neighborhood and that they
won't return because there is
nothing there for them.
"It's a proven fact that those
who participate in extracur-
ricular activities graduate at
a higher rate," Gearing said.

Paul Kraack
Periscope contributor

"Take a trumpet and give it to a
kid, and that kid will graduate
because he played in the band.
Or we can [give him] a jersey,
and he'll graduate because he
was on a team. A cheerleader,
a majorette, a dancer-those
are the kids who make it. The
kids who don't embrace those
things [or who don't have the
chance to embrace them] are
the ones we lose."
How fitting is it that, fac-
ing the difficulties they face
in New Orleans, that school
officials recognize that all the
buildings and repaired homes
in the world cannot attract
children back to their neigh-
borhoods. But programs will.
"When we open schools and
start sports and arts programs,"
Gearing said, "kids show up.

We are not sure where they
were, but they find us." What
else needs to be said about
how important such programs
are for attracting and educat-
ing the whole child?
Locally, in the follow-
ing weeks, commitment and
dedication will take on new
meaning, as your neighbors
and friends will undertake
a reprise of Crooked Rivers'
spring cultural heritage pro-
duction, "Fightin; Faith and
Family." Starting with rehears-
als this week, the Crooked
Rivers volunteers will put a
new spin on great stories about
our community, dating back
to the 19th century and peer-
ing into more recent history.
This production, which is the
second annual full-length
Crooked Rivers offering, looks
at stories and history that sur-
round common experiences,
particularly those related to
the spiritual, to war and to
family.
"Fightin; Faith and Family"
looks at relationships between
husband and wives, society's
tendency to pick fights, and
the important role that faith
plays in our coastal Georgia
past.
The cast of "Fightin; Faith
and Family" is comprised of
local community members

devoted to providing you
with an evening of histori-
cal and humorous entertain-
ment filled with stories and
music about the region's cul-
tural and historical heritage.
Your tour guides, as you tra-
verse through that heritage,
are the three sisters (Kingsley,
Woodenia, and Mary), that
represent the major cities of
Camden County (Woodbine,
Kingsland, and St. Marys). Just
as in "Sisters' Three'," Crooked
Rivers 2006 production, these
ladies help guide you through
the years, gently jibing each
other along the way.
The Crooked Rivers' repri-
sal production of "Fightin;
Faith, and Family" will take
the stage on Friday (Sept. 21)
at 7 p.m. and Saturday (Sept.
22) at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in
the high school Auditorium.
Tickets are $10 for adults and
$5 for students and senior
adults. Tickets will be avail-
able at Sheila's Hallmark, the
St. Mary's Tourism Office,
Kingsland Tourism Office
and the CCHS Auditorium
in advance. They will also be
available at the door day of
show.

Kingsland Lions Club Member Larry Johnson makes special
Mickey Mouse pancakes for the kids and the adults that are
kids at heart. "One day we were making pancakes and some of
them got to close together. I was about to throw it away when
a child asked for the Mickey Mouse pancake, and ever since
we have been making them," Johnson said.

Twenty five years ago, a small town's Labor Day festival that
served chicken and fish to raise money has turned into
its largest and most anticipated event of the year. With its
roots in the past, the Camden County Catfish Festival is always
looking to make each year more memorable than the last.
"Back when the first festival was celebrated, it was more of a
one day get together down by the Catfish Creek," said Kingsland
Mayor Kenneth Smith. "Now it's a three-day festival that thou-
sands of people attend each year."
This year there were more than 70,000 visitors looking to "Get
the Royal Treatment" at the Catfish Festival held over the Labor
Day weekend in Kingsland. The festival is considered one of
the areas biggest events and is a four-time Southeast Tourism
Society "Top 20 Event" and a three-time American Business
Association "Top 100 Event in North America," according to
Kingsland's Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
"This is the first year that my family and I have gone to the
festival. We're already excited for next year," said Corey Murrell,
a local citizen. "The main attraction is what the entire event has
to offer like the 5K run for myself, the arts and crafts for my wife,
and the games for the kids."
Visitors to the festival had an event-filled weekend starting
with a 5K run/walk to start off the Labor Day weekend Saturday.
Also, a pancake breakfast was offered by the Kingsland Lions
Club, an antique/classic car, truck, and tractor exhibition, and
the piece Del la resistance, the official Annual Catfish Festival
S% k - %-. A L t- .m u15 v,, r-' '

Parade, took place on Monday.
"After a few hours with the kids enjoying themselves, it's nice
to be able to relax and take pleasure in the live entertainment,
said Nicki Holmes, a stay at home mom. "Who could pass up a
free concert with music by Tracy Lawrence?"
One of the things that makes the Catfish festival such a major
attraction is the live bands and musical artists that play on
Sunday and Monday. The main headliner of the festival, Tracy
Lawrence, took the stage on Monday around 5 p.m. and did not
finish until 6:30 p.m. Lawrence is currently perched atop the
country music charts with his 17th number one record, "Find
Out Who Your Friends Are."
"I'm thrilled to be performing at the Catfish Festival this year.
I always enjoy performing at this type of event," said Lawrence
"We've really turned our summer tour up a notch and there's
even more energy on stage."
Besides live entertainment, booths filled with hand made
arts and crafts from all over Camden County and the surround-
ing area decorated the streets for visitors to gaze at and peruse
through. According to Tonya Rosado, "This year we have a
record number of booths. We had to make more room for all the
booths."
This year's festival had something for everyone. The kids were
entertained by arts, crafts, and an amusement area. The adults
enjoyed the live music of Tracy Lawrence and the antique/clas-
sic car, truck, and tractor exhibition, along with all varieties of
great food.
For the visitor, it was a great opportunity to see what Kingsland
and the surrounding area has to offer.

Byron Lawrence has come from Jacksonville, Fla. to show fes-
tival-goers what he does for a living. Lawrence carves life-size
aquatic animal wood sculptures. "It takes anywhere from six
hours to a whole day to make one, depending on the type of
sculpture," he said.

Classic cars and trucks from the Southeast Car and Truck Club cruised down the road as part of this year's Catfish Festival
Parade. This year there were about 30 different floats and groups being represented during the parade.

A classic car show was just one of the several events available to those who attended the Catfish Festival.

11-year-old Camden County Middle School stu-
dent Jamoni Browne sang patriotic songs as part of
the live entertainment during the festival. "He has
been singing every since he was three, and he has
not stopped since," said James Ammons Browne,
Jamoni's grandfather.

Fun for all ages, the Catfish festival had rides, a bounce houses, games and even
pony rides. "This the first time we have come to the Catfish Festival and we love
the fact that there is so much for our daughter to enjoy," said Nicki Homes, as
her daughter enjoys her first pony ride.

Even the "Big Kids" got to

kids of all ages got to race
a miniature track like their
favorite NASCAR racer.

home.
"What a great first sea story I will have
to share with everyone back home," he said.
"Having the governor of my home state aboard
the USS Florida on my very first deployment is
an incredible experience."
Another aspect Perdue was impressed with
was the leadership showed by USS Florida
Gold Crew Commanding Officer Capt. John
Litherland.
The commanding officer was not as Perdue
described a "control freak," but was delegat-
ing responsibility and listening to any ideas in
a roundtable discussion with his junior offi-
cers and senior enlisted leaders. According to
Perdue, it was a great experience and he left
more of an ambassador of the submarine com-
munity than ever before.
"The ship itself is an incredible sight, but
the captain and crew were the most impressive
part of the whole experience;'," he said. "There
is no lounging around, the crew is hard a work
24 hours a day. It gave me a great appreciation
for Americans who are willing to do these jobs
to keep us safe."
Perdue spent a great deal of time listening
to the concerns from the crew. He made it

a special point to meet the Sailors who were
natives of Georgia. According to CSCS(SS)
James Bryant, it was a once in a lifetime oppor-
tunity to be able to meet the governor of his
home state.
"As a longtime citizen of Georgia, I enjoyed
the opportunity to show off one of the newest
weapons against the war on terror, the USS
Florida," he said. "It was both an honor and a
privilege for me to be part of this momentous
occasion."
Perdue is looking forward to his next sched-
uled deployment, this time on the USS Georgia
(SSGN 729), which will be home ported at
NSB Kings Bay in the near future. Although
the size of the submarine was an impressive
sight, Perdue was fascinated by the view from
the bridge, the beauty of the sea and the many
more missions the USS Florida will be a part
of.
"I was memorized by the flow of the water.
The colors that were generated were really fas-
cinating," he said.
"The submarine is a very complex machine
and I think the mission of the vessel will serve
the United States in many ways for years to
come."

Ninth Grade Parent Night
Parents of Camden County's current ninth-grade students
will have an opportunity to make sure their students' get off
to a good start Sept. 10 during their high school careers by
attending a first-ever Ninth Grade Center Parent Night at the
Camden County High School Auditorium, beginning at 7 p.m.
Administrators, counselors and teachers from the Ninth Grade
Center have arranged a special program for parents of this year's
freshmen class to provide important information and offer spe-
cial opportunities to families of students in the class of 2011.
"Students entering high school this year have unique respon-
sibilities and requirements about which both they and their
parents need to be informed," said Ninth Grade Center deputy
principal, Dr. Denise Cato. "Parent Night will offer parents
information and resources that will help students be academi-
cally successful during their ninth-grade year, and at the same
time, help them to plan for their educational and occupational
futures," Cato said.
Parents of ninth-grade students will receive information spe-
cifically aimed at helping them access guidance services and
academic support services. Information about programs of
study offered at Camden County High will help parents and
students make decisions about courses and activities in which
to enroll.
On the agenda for the evening, parents will learn how to mon-
itor their student's grades and attendance using the school's
online grade book viewer and about the school's state-man-
dated testing program. In addition, counselors and work-based
learning staff will provide students and parents information
about programs that can lead to industry certification and/or
career technical field diplomas. Parents will also receive infor-
mation about the importance of making a four-to-six-plan dur-
ing a student's freshman year, and about how students that need
academic assistance can receive it.
The program will last about an hour, with information and
resources presented directly by staff to parents and students,
who will also have time to speak personally to administrators,
stay-in-school personnel, guidance counselors and teachers at
the end of the program. For more information, contact, Mr. Allyn
Robb at 729-7544.

American's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia
The American Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia will be dis-
tributing food through the Mobile Food Pantry Sept. 14, from
noon to 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church 1285
Kinlaw Road off Harriets Bluff road in Woodbine.
Each day almost 5,000 people in our community are at risk for
hunger. Non-profits and churches in our community distribute
food to families, children, seniors and the working poor, but it's
just not enough. In an effort to provide food to under-served
communities, Second Harvest distributes food directly to low-
income areas in communities through the Mobile Food Pantry
with the assistance of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church and
other non-profits. The food distribution will provide bags of
groceries to families, seniors and the homeless. Bags of food will
be provided to 500 eligible families and households, first come
first served.
For more details and to volunteer with distribution call
Deborah Walk at 279-0074.

Dugout Club Golf Tournament
The Camden County Dugout club would like to invite you out
for a day of golf and fun on Saturday, Oct. 6 to benefit the base-
ball program of Camden County High School. The golf tourna-
ment begins with a "shotgun" start at 9 a.m. The tournament is
being held at The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove in Waverly, Ga.
Registration will be limited to the first 100 golfers. The tour-
nament cost is $85 per player which will include a round of golf,
cart fee, golf shirt, a goodie bag, and 10 chances to win a one-
year membership to Sanctuary Cove golf course. Breakfast will
be provided as well as lunch catered by Sonny's restaurant.
There will be a hole in one contest located on all par three's

including a chance to win a truck donated by Dan Vaden of
Brunswick. There are also prizes to be awarded for the closest
to the pin, longest drive, and "beat the pro." A putting contest
will also be conducted at the practice green. There will be prizes
raffled off during lunch at the conclusion of the tournament.
Come out and join us for an experience which is "on par" to
be a great time and help out in making Camden baseball one of
the best programs in the state.

USO Cadillac Invitational
The Country of Club of Orange Park is pleased to announce
the inaugural USO Cadillac Invitational Oct. 15. This golf tour-
nament, presented by Nimnicht Cadillac, is a regional qualifier
for the Cadillac Invitational National tournament to be held in
mid-January at TPC Sawgrass.
The funds raised from this event will benefit the 117,000 mili-
tary men and women and their families in the Northeast Florida
and Southeast Georgia area. Some of the programs and services
offered by the USO include Operation Care Package, Operation
Phone Home, United Through Reading, Operation Mail Call,
Operation Enduring Care, Gifts from the Homefront, Mobile
USO program and more. All funds raised in the inaugural tour-
nament will benefit the North Florida/Southeast Georgia USO.

Woodbine Woman's Club
A conservation and arts project is currently underway in
Woodbine to establish the town as a bird sanctuary.
The Woodbine Woman's Club is partnering with the City of
Woodbine, Gateway Camden Industries, Camden County High
School Skills USA, and the Lion's Club to build and place blue-
bird nesting boxes establishing trails throughout neighborhoods
around the city and from Liza Rudolph Road north along the old
rail bed onto the River Walk.
The path from the city one mile south to Liza Rudolph Road is
significant historically as Woodbine's African-American school
children walked the rail track to the school house at Gethsemane
Church Association grounds. Currently in great need of stabili-
zation and rehabilitation, this school is still standing and could
be saved by citizens organizing to recover this historic building.
For more information, call 576-6991.

Kingsland Lions Club
The Kingsland Lions Club meets on the second and fourth
Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at 112 West Williams Street
across from the Municipal Building in downtown Kingsland.
The Lions Club is a group of men and women who iden-
tify needs within the community and work together to fulfill
those needs. For more information or to get involved with the
Kingsland Lions Club, please contact Club Vice President Jim
McCain at 673-1300 or email him at hippostorage@tds.net.

strong and continuous support of the goals and issues confront-
ing the United States Submarine Force.

Georgia Initiative for Community Housing
The Georgia Initiative for Community Housing Team, (GICH)
consists of city and the county representatives and individuals
from the community who are interested in providing affordable
housing in our community.
The team is currently working on a homeownership training
classes and potential projects for providing a range of housing
options for our community.
"Right now there is a big gap in housing from subsidized hous-
ing to what is currently available on the market and most people
don't qualify for the high prices of housing in our community
right now. We hope that by offering classes and working with
local builders and developers that we will be able to provide
housing in the $100,000 $160,000 range that will allow more
individuals in our community the opportunity of homeowner-
ship," said Pat Clink, local realtor and member of the GICH
Team. Anyone interested in learning more about the GICH
Team can attend their monthly meeting the last Tuesday of
each month at noon at Borrell Creek, or contact Darren Harper,
Chairperson at 729-5613 .
