Enhancing readiness, trans-
forming challenges into
achievements and continu-
ing to provide support to the fleet,
fighter and family were just a few
of the challenges that were laid
out as Capt. Ward Stevens relieved
Capt. Mike McKinnon as NSB Kings
Bay commanding officer during a
change of command and retirement
ceremony July 27.
Stevens became the 17th com-
manding officer of Kings Bay during

a ceremony held at the World War
II Submarine Veteran's Memorial
Pavilion here.
Although the main theme was
the passing of the torch of com-
mand, the day marked the end of
McKinnon's 26 years of service.
McKinnon was heralded for the
base's many achievements under
his leadership during the last three
years. The base received more than
30 command awards including the
Voluntary Protection Program STAR

Coast Guard unit commissioned at Kings Bay

By MC2(AW/SW) Kimberly
Clifford
Submarine Group Ten Public Affairs
The Maritime Force Protection
Unit (MFPU), Kings Bay held
their official commissioning
ceremony on July 24 at the NSB Kings
Bay Chapel and was presided over
by Vice Adm. D. Brian Peterman,
Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic
Area.
"This is a new and unique mis-
sion. It's a great day for the Coast
Guard," Peterman said.
The MFPU is a specially trained
and equipped, single mission unit
that provides a protective escort for
submarines transiting to and from
NSB Kings Bay. The Coast Guard's
law enforcement authority allows the
unit to maintain a naval vessel pro-
tective zone that can extend out 12
nautical miles from shore. In addi-
tion to law enforcement, MFPU per-

sonnel can transition seamlessly into
a unit of self-defense if a submarine
is attacked.
"To highlight the importance of
the mission, I would like to recog-
nize the fact that over half of my
crew is not present for today's com-
missioning ceremony due to mission
requirements that have them under-
way," said Cmdr. Alan L. Reagan,
commanding officer, MFPU.
The MFPU started with one repre-
sentative in May 2006 and now has a
commissioning crew of 39 personnel;
by 2010 the unit will be 170 strong.
The unit will also gain two 87' Coastal
Patrol Boats and a number of smaller
boats in the next year. A sister unit
was commissioned in Bangor, Wash.
July 26.
The MFPU is a symbol of the strong
partnership between the Coast Guard
and the Navy.
By pooling the resources of both

services, the Navy purchasing the
boats and the Coast Guard providing
the training and crews, the MFPU
will be an effective tool to provide
anti-terrorism/force protection for
the nation.
"The closer Navy and Coast
Guard work together, the better for
the Nation. The partnership here
on Kings Bay has been very produc-
tive";' said Port Security Chief George
Casey, MFPU.
MFPU has worked closely with
NSB Kings Bay, Submarine Group 10,
the Strategic Weapons Facility, Naval
Submarine Support Center and the
Maritime Safety and Security Team
to reach their operating capability
goals.
"This Base and the tenant com-
mands have been so hospitable. It
has allowed my crew to assimilate
and to train, it's a great working rela-
tionship," Reagan said.

GMH

conducts

town hall

meeting

By MCSN Kenneth Abbate
Periscope staff
More than 150 base hous-
ing residents were on hand
to express their opinions
and concerns to representatives of
GMH Military Housing about Public
Private Venture (PPV) base housing
during a town hall meeting at NSB
Kings Bay Chapel July 25.
GMH Military Housing was select-
ed by the Department of the Navy and
given exclusive rights for design, con-
struction, management and mainte-
nance of the military housing at 11
bases in the five state Navy Region
Southeast Area beginning Oct. 1. The
50-year term project will commence
with a six-year Initial Development
Period that is valued in excess of $770
million, making this the largest PPV
housing initiative ever.
One of the main issues voiced dur-
ing the one-hour meeting was the
way GMH would assign each house
depending on the rank of the service-
member. Enlisted members from E-1
thru E-6 have the same foundation,
while E-7 and above get an upgrade.
For example, if you have two service-
members who are married to one
another GMH Military Housing will
take the BAH from the highest rank-
ing member.
"The main issue thatwas expressed
was the different ranks having to pay-
ing different amounts of money," said
Regional Community Manager Paula
Cook. "E-6 and below have a differ-
ent foundation compared to E-7 and
above because E-7's have a larger
amount of BAH. In the end, it is really
the E-7's who are sacrificing more
money because of their higher BAH."
Other issues discussed at the meet-
ing included rent payment and the
signing of leases. GMH has simplified
the payment of rent and utilities by
including both in the rent payment.
The servicemembers rent will never
exceed their BAH. The idea is to not
pay any out of pocket expenses for
rent and utilities. The residents will
pay for all other luxuries such as cable
television and Internet. GMH has two
proposed ways to pay each month,
either by allotment or by coming into
the office and paying. The only draw
back is you will be required to pay

Volunteers Needed for USO Welcome Center
The USO Welcome Center Jacksonville International
Airport (JIA) is a wonderful facility providing a safe haven
to military members. Our scheduled hours are 9 a.m. to
midnight Monday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. Friday
through 9 p.m. Sunday, 365 days a year. Our goal is to
remain open 24/7, but we need your help.
Visitors to the Welcome Center are either departing the
area and need a place to "hang out" until their flight leaves,
or are arriving and need assistance traveling to their
duty station. Since opening on Veteran's Day 2004, we've
assisted more than 7,000 visitors annually and continue
to receive many expressions of gratitude. Due to the time
involved in training, operational procedures, and security
issues, we only accept volunteers who can make a weekly
commitment to a specific shift. Individuals must be able
to attend training before they can volunteer. Training is
generally held on Monday, Friday, or Saturday evenings
from 5 to 9 pm. In order to volunteer, you must have
access to email and be able to check daily. For specific
details regarding Volunteering at the USO JIA, please email
lynne@usojax.com

Are You 'War Weary?'

By Beth Wiruth
Periscope contributor

Recently a reader sent
me a comic that says,
"The Military is at War,
America is at the Mall." This
war, perhaps like no other, has
not had the same direct impact
on our society as previous
wars. The stock market contin-
ues to set records, economic
indicators remain strong, and
unemployment remains low.
However for military fami-
lies the war isn't 'background
noise.' Increasingly I am
receiving emails from spous-
es who are growing weary in
standing strong. One such let-
ter was labeled "I feel like a
promise breaker." The author,
a National Guard wife in the
midst of her second deploy-
ment, and second extension
to that deployment, expressed
it this way, "I just don't know
how to be 'up' anymore. I
don't know what to believe
about the war, the world, the
country. And I don't want him
to know how I am feeling!"
For military spouses, even
if our servicemember isn't
deployed at this moment, the
war is an ever-present real-
ity. We live understanding that
our Sailor's shore duty could
mean an IA deployment, or
that a current deployment
or patrol could be extended.
National Guard and Reserve
units and their families live
with the knowledge that their
service maybe required again,
and again. Sometimes it can

Local View

seem impossible to escape the
influence of the war.
For some spouses adapt-
ing to the current deployment
plans and the resulting family
impact, while challenging, is
less severe. Perhaps they are
seasoned spouses; perhaps
they have strong family and
friends to offer support and
encouragement. But all of us
will go through our "moments"
when deployments, military
life, and the reality ofwar when
added to other life stressors
can make us feel like 'promise
breakers.'
If you are experiencing what
I call 'war weariness,' please
know that you are not alone.
You are not a failure; you are
not a 'lousy' military spouse;
and you most certainly are not
a promise breaker. You are in
good company.
I am not going to give you
a pep-talk about the virtues
of your servicemember's ser-
vice to their country or whywe
are in the midst of the present
conflict. That will not bring
you comfort or 'snap you out'
of your malaise. I am going to
encourage you to take care of
you. Be good to yourself.
Have you noticed that when
a flight attendant gives instruc-
tions on the use of the air mask
they instruct parents to put
their mask on FIRST then put
it on their children? There is
a reason for that. If you do not
take care of you, you will be
unable to take care of anyone
else.
We as military spouses need
to make sure we are taking

care of ourselves. Self-care and
stress-management is essen-
tial. How do we do that? How
do we find that air mask? Let
me offer a few suggestions.
Control your environment.
Turn the news off. Yes, turn the
news off. In fact, don't watch
it for five days. And don't get
on the computer to 'catch up
on the news' Limit your televi-
sion viewing in both time and
what you view. Balance your
viewing with uplifting shows.
Put on headphones and listen
to your favorite music. Get lost
in a book.
Change your environment.
Take a walk, go to the mall,
meet a friend for coffee or take
the children (and/or dog) to
the park. Pick up a bouquet
of flowers for your room, rear-
range the furniture, paint the
bedroom, refinish a piece of
furniture, landscape the back-
yard.
Pamper yourself. Get a man-
icure, change your hairstyle,
have a massage. Get a baby-
sitter and go to the movies (a
happy chic-flick) by yourself
or with a friend.
Give yourself permission
to laugh even if your service
member maybe deployed. You
are permitted to relax, to take
a moment for you, to laugh.
Take a deep breath. I know
that sounds trite but there are
actual physiological reasons
to do so. When we breathe
we rarely fully exhale the air
in our lungs. I'm not going to
go into the science of this but
do this exercise several times
throughoutyour day. Exhale all

Beth Wiruth

the breath that you can, push-
ing out as much breath as pos-
sible. Then slowly inhale from
the diaphragm, completely
filling your lungs. Repeat four
times. This helps empty the
lungs of lingering carbon diox-
ide making room for greater
oxygen which invigorates your
body and refreshes us.
If these feelings persist con-
sider talking to someone. Talk
to your cleric, doctor or contact
a counselor. Many bases offer
stress management classes as
well as counseling services
through the base counseling
office.
Free, confidential counsel-
ing is also available through
Military One Source. Getting
help is not a sign of weakness
or failure. Rather, it is a sign of
wisdom and maturity. By tak-
ing care of ourselves we will
be able to take care of our chil-
dren, family and support our
service member.

Recently, a dozen of
Camden County's neat-
est students and sev-
eral of their parents boarded
a Continental Expressjet for
New York City.
Even though their expecta-
tion level was high, they could
not have anticipated the expe-
riences, the emotions, or the
rewards their travels would
bring.
We all knew the agenda:
five days in the Big Apple, four
musicals and one play already
scheduled, and chances to see
one or two more depending
on preferences.
Among the scheduled shows
were "Wicked" (with more

than $20 million in advance
ticket sales right now, ensur-
ing its place in the pantheon
of great musicals); "Spamalot"
(lovingly "ripped off" from
Monty Python's "Quest for the
Holy Grail," along with great
portions of that show's humor,
whimsy and downright hilar-
ity); "Lion King" (entering its
second decade and one of the
five Disney shows currently
on Broadway); and "In the
Heights" (a new off-Broadway
musical that is an entertain-
ing, hugely popular show that
will be moving to Broadway
next season).
Add to that mix a once in
a lifetime experience: seeing
show business giants Brian
Dennehy and Christopher
Plummer on the same stage in
a revival of "Inherit the Wind."
For our students, watching
these two veterans exact their
craft with so much skill left
lasting impressions they
could not talk enough about
the speeches, the characters
and the staging.
This trip was fraught with
moments of emotion: the
looks on the students' faces
at the end of Act I of "Wicked"
when they tried to make sense
of what they had just expe-
rienced (the future Wicked
Witch of the West, Elphaba,

"defying gravity"); their appre-
ciation of the amazing designs
and ingenuity of Julie Taymor
that brought a favorite Disney
cartoon to life; and their trepi-
dation about visiting Harlem
and their appreciation of what
they learned during their visit
with Billy Mitchell at theApollo
Theatre about its importance
to music in America and to
show business at large.
There were moments that
created individual special
memories: pictures made with
Captain Jack Sparrow at the
Disney store; one student's
successful quest to see "Les
Mis6rables;" standing in awe
at the destruction and renew-
al simultaneously present at
Ground Zero; realizing that an
old friend, Rob Evan, is now
playing Kerchak in "Tarzan"
and getting to say hello to him
after the show; and meeting a
new friend, Tiffany Haas, one of
the swing actors for "Wicked,"'
who spent more than an hour
talking to our charges about
her background, her experi-
ences on Broadway and how
much it meant to be a working
professional in her field.
On any given night, she is
ready to play any of eight roles
in the show, including two of
the leads which she does
frequently.

On the night we saw her,
she started the show in one
role and finished the show in
another role, due to an injury
to another actor.
And, as promised, we trav-
eled down Broadway to 34th
street, and while dodging the
traffic, we stood on the spot
in front of Macy's where our
own Megan Unger will play
in the Macy's Parade march-
ing band on Thanksgiving
Day in front of 50 million TV
viewers and a couple million
New Yorkers. And just like all
the other performers up and
down the length of Broadway,
she will experience what we all
felt this week.
A shared bond that exalts
and validates the importance
of the arts in our lives and our
culture.
This week, Camden Summer
Theatre productions of "101
Dalmations" will be on stage
for audiences on Thursday
and Friday evenings, June 14
& 15 at 7 p.m. at the CCHS
Auditorium.
Tickets will be available at
the door; they are $7 for adults
and $4 for students and senior
adults.

award, which recognizes outstanding safety and health programs
aboard military installations. Another huge accomplishment
during his tenure was the capturing of the 2007 Commander in
Chief's (CNIC) Installation Excellence Award. The CNIC award
recognizes the outstanding efforts of the command and tenant
commands working as a team in the operation and mainte-
nance of the Southeast Georgia base. According to Navy Region
Southeast Commander Rear Adm. Mark S. Boensel, McKinnon's
passion and drive as a leader were the keys to the installation's
success.
"There are not very many awards that this base didn't capture
during the last three years;'," he said. "The whole thing the Navy
stresses is for people to do the right thing. Capt. McKinnon has
done the right things and the Navy has recognized that."
Boensel went on to state that "True leaders are not those who
strive to be first, but those who are first to strive;' he said. "Mike
has been this team's leader, he has set the vision and he has gone
about doing the things necessary to make it happen."
Although the comments throughout the ceremony reflected

McKinnon's great leadership abilities, according to McKinnon
it was the support of the personnel which led to all the base's
accomplishments.
"Each command and the folks who make up our team have
set a standard of performance that is unmatched by any other,"
he said. I fully believe you win with people. Team Kings Bay has
the best people in the Navy."
Stevens is no stranger to Kings Bay as he was the command-
ing officer of USS Wyoming (SSBN 742) Gold from 2001 until
2004 before becoming Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command,
Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board from Feb. 2004 until May
of this year. Although his predecessor led Kings Bay to higher
standards, Stevens is up to the task of using his vision and com-
mitment to keeping those standards high and exceeding all
expectations.

MWR sponsors back-

to-school cookout

By MCSN Kenneth Abbate
Periscope staff
Dozens of children and
their parents attended
the first ever Back-to-
School Cookout at the NSB
Kings Bay's Big EZ Sports Zone
July 28.
The cookout was geared
toward the fifteen and under
age group and featured music,
an ample supply of chips,
soda, hot dogs, hamburger,
and baked beans as well as
air hockey, football, basket-
ball, darts, ping-pong, joust-
ing, and a bouncing gym. The

a deposit if you pay this way.
The utility metering will be
established for the first year, at
which they will take the high-
est average amount of usage
for each utility and make it the
base for all the following years.
As for signing a lease, if a ser-
vicemember is deploying on
an Individual Augmentee (IA)
assignment before the sched-
uled lease signing date, all
the member has to do is bring
this up to the GMH Military
Housing office and they will
be more than happy to accom-
modate them.

event also featured two give-
aways, which consisted of two
backpacks filled with school
supplies as well as small bags
filled with school supplies.
"We wanted to do some-
thing for the kids in the area,
which is something we rarely
do," said Recreation Assistant
Anthony Clark. "We wanted to
do something nice and show
off the facilities:'
Despite the turnout, Clark
and the rest of MWR staff were
hoping that they could get
more parents and their chil-
dren to come out and enjoy
the fun.
"I would have liked to see

more people but I think the
turnout was good," said Clark.
"This is something I would like
to try and do again and make it
a yearly event."
Even though it was said to
be a small turnout, the chil-
dren and their parents enjoyed
the event.
"I thought it was a great way
to end the summer and begin
the school year," said CSC (SS)
Michael Riccio. "My 5 year-old
absolutely loved it and we are
just excited to be here. This
was a nice way for the parents
to meet and chat as well as for
the kids to play with some of
their friends from school."

in place to improve housing

According to Vice President
of Project Development Bob
Shepko, paying by allotment
will make paying rent a lot
easier for everyone. "Our main
goal is to provide high qual-
ity housing and community
service for military members,"
said Shepko. "With paying by
allotment, the BAH is auto-
matically taken out for rent
and utilities and your base
pay will not be affected. The
servicemember's leave and
earnings statement will auto-
matically show the addition
and subtraction of the housing
allowance. Ifyou choose to pay

by other means, we require a
deposit as a security until the
money is paid."
The GMH representatives
also unveiled a power point
slide showing other plans that
will improve the quality of life
in base housing.
There are plans for a com-
munity center and swimming
pool to be used for commu-
nity gatherings. Another addi-
tion that will improve living
conditions is an on site man-
ager who will be responsible
for quick repairs and handling
any construction issues in a
timely manner.

Jacksonville Jaguars tickets available at the USO

By Greater Jacksonville Area USO
It's that time again! As the Jacksonville Jaguars season approaches, the Greater Jacksonville
Area USO has released the new rules and sale schedule regarding the sale of USO Jaguars tick-
ets. You may pick up one of the brochures at the NAS Jax or Mayport Office. You may also find
the brochure on our website, www.usojax.org, to download, print and fold for easy reference.
Since the Jacksonville Jaguar inaugural season, the Greater Jacksonville Area USO has sold
Jaguars tickets to each home game at minimal cost. The Jacksonville Jaguars generosity is not
duplicated by any other NFL team. The tickets are for the express purpose of providing Active
Duty military personnel and their families the ability to enjoy an NFL game at a reasonable
price.
This year, the USO is broadening the ability for commands to purchase bulk tickets for com-
mand sponsored events. Last year, commands were only authorized to request 25 tickets to
individual games.
This year, there is no restriction on the number of tickets a command may request. Specific
details on the method of requesting command sponsored tickets are included in the Ticket Sale
Guideline Brochure located on our website, www.usojax.org. Additionally, the USO is lifting
the restriction imposed last year which did not allow single military personnel to take a civilian
guest.
The USO asks for everyone's support to ensure tickets are not resold to ineligible individuals.
This is a good program and a great opportunity for those currently serving in uniform and their

families. Uniforms are not required for admittance. Retired military personnel, civil service
personnel and civilians are not authorized entry to any Jaguar game through the use of a USO
ticket.
The cost of the USO ticket is $8 per ticket, regardless of age. Individual tickets go on sale two
Monday prior to the game, or two Tuesdays prior to the game if Monday is a holiday. The NAS
Jacksonville USO will open its doors at 8 am for ticket sales and the Mayport Center will open its
doors at 9 am for ticket sales as follows:

Troops to Teachers
The Georgia Troops to Teachers Program provides eli-
gible servicemembers up to $10,000 to become public
school teachers. Under the Spouse to Teachers Programs,
eligible military spouses may be reimbursed for the cost of
state required certification tests up to a total of $600.

New Photo Requirement for Officer Records
All officers are now required to have a full-length color
photograph in their official military file, according to
NAVADMIN 103/07 distributed to the fleet April 24.
Officers who do not have a photograph on the electronic
military personnel records system in their current grade
must submit a photograph before Sept. 30. The preferred
uniform will be service khaki without a cover. When service
khaki is unavailable, any regulation uniform is acceptable.
The public affairs center detachment located at NS
Mayport, Fla. is the tri-base source for all official photo-
graphs. It is recommended officers needing a full-length
photo for selection board purposes prior to Sept. 30
call (904) 270-7762 and set up an appointment with the
detachment.
When official facilities are not available, officers are
authorized to use commercial sources. If commercial
sources are unavailable, officer may submit any color pho-
tograph that complies with the requirements outlined in
MILPERSMAN 1070-180.

Mail policy
If you live in the barracks, do not use your building and
room number as your address. Mail is not delivered to
the barracks. Using your command address will speed up
delivery of your mail and prevent delay. If you are assigned
to NSB Kings Bay, please include your work center in your
address. For civilians receiving official/job related mail
through the NSB Kings Bay Mailroom, include your com-
mand and work center in your address.

New Hospital Web site
Naval Hospital Jacksonville recently changed its Web site
address from .com to .mil. Please note the new address and
bookmark it in your server "favorites" for future reference.
The site will continue to provide valuable information
about the services available at Naval Hospital Jacksonville
and its Branch Health Clinics as well as links and articles
on important health issues. The new address is: navalhos-
pitaljax.med.navy.mil

Have you completed your PHA?
All active-duty personnel require a Preventive Health
Assessment annually. The assessment must be complete
within the past 12 months in order to participate in the
semi-annual command fitness assessment or the reme-
dial fitness program. A PHA consists of a one-on-one
review of your health record and health status with a Naval
Branch Halth Clinic corpsman. This includes updating
your record for deployment. A PHA is not the same as
a medical screening for the CFA, which must be done
separately. PHAs should be scheduled in the same month
as your birthday. Call Military Medicine at 573-8801 to
schedule a PHA.

Protect your base identification
Operational Security is the responsibility of all hands.
Controlling access to the base is one of the most important
roles of our security force as they provide a safe and secure
environment for all of us. Control of your issued base
access badge is a critical component of controlling base
access. Do not leave your badge unattended, especially in
your vehicle, the gym locker room, or other places where
it could be stolen.

Help NMCRS help others
Now, more than ever, you can help at Navy-Marine
Corps Relief Society. Death or serious illness in the imme-
diate family, rent/mortgage, utilities, food, car repair, car
payment, insurance, dental, medical ... you can make a
difference in the life of a fellow servicemember. You can
provide them with the funds, education and tools to find
solutions to their emergency needs. Call 573-3928 today.

age in the Periscope? Let us know by calling editor Mike

JAGUARS

Charles Willingham was one of the first in line to purchase four tickets to the Jacksonville
Jaguars home season operner against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 9. The Information,
Tickets and Tourism (ITT) office began selling season tickets on July 26 and 27. The rem-
maining tickets went on sale July 30 as single game purchases at a significant discount
from the stadium prices. According to ITT Lead Customer Service Agent Amy Parinella,
this is a one time chance to get a deal on football tickets. "It is first come, first serve," she
said. "When these tickets run out, that is it for the season." For more information about
tickets to Jaguars games and other popular attraction tickets, contact ITT at 573-2289

Community Partners

Breakfast brings area

leaders to the table

By Loren Barnes
Naval Hospital Jacksonville Public Affairs

N aval Hospital Jacksonville hosted
its quarterly Community Partners
Breakfast on Friday, July 20, in the
hospital galley. This quarter's breakfast also
included about 50 civic leaders, including
Congressional staff, and representatives from
area healthcare organizations. Representatives
of the Humana Military Healthcare Services'
TRICARE Network and its dental partners,
United Concordia and Delta Dental also partic-
ipated in the networking opportunity. All these
entities and others enable the hospital to offer
expanded services to patients. Another 50 naval
hospital personnel participated in the event.
The day started off bright and early as the
guests joined staff in the hospital's Friday
Morning Quarters. Theythen entered the hospi-
tal Quarterdeck for a Yellow Ribbon ceremony,
in which eight ribbons were posted on a display
to honor deployed medical personnel. The hos-
pital has dozens of service members deployed.
The ribbons stay up until their return. Remarks
were delivered by Naval Hospital Jacksonville
Commanding Officer Capt. Raquel Bono and
the event's guest speaker Commander, Navy
Region Southeast Rear Adm. Mark Boensel at
the subsequent breakfast.
Bono outlined the scope, scale and qual-
ity of the hospital services which are avail-
able to more than 64,000 beneficiaries in the
Jacksonville area and some 220,000 when the
hospital's seven Georgia/Florida Branch Health
Clinics (BHCs) are included.
Boensel spoke about how important the hos-
pital and its BHCs are to one of his command's
key missions; maintaining a high quality of
life for area military and their families and the
close working relationship the Navy and the
Naval Hospital have with the local community.
He also noted the hospital's dual mission of
supporting deployed forces abroad. The hos-
pital's "Devil Docs" deliver care in dangerous
and demanding locations on the frontlines of
Iraq and Afghanistan, human being to human
being, regardless of their stripe, American sol-
diers, Allied Forces, civilians, even enemy com-
batants.
Naval Hospital Jacksonville healthcare
providers work with "some very unpleasant

patients" in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They
are also currently serving aboard the hospital
ship USNS Comfort as it sails on a humani-
tarian mission to the Caribbean and South
and Central America. The hospital routinely
deploys personnel to support military hospitals
in Kuwait and Djibouti, Africa.
Boensel singled out HMCM Rick Wilson as
an outstanding example to young "Devil Docs'
in the making." The term "Devil Doc" is a hard-
earned name Marines bestow on the hospital
corpsman who serve with their unit. Wilson
recently received a Bronze Star for his assis-
tance to Afghanistan's Ministry of Health. The
Master Chief Hospital Corpsman, who says he
loves humanitarian work, led teams of humani-
tarian and medical personnel as they took
short-term healthcare to the Afghan people
in remote locations treating men, women and
children for varied illnesses. He even helped
provide veterinary care for their livestock at
times. He and his team did this work superbly
despite occasional incidents with enemy rock-
et-propelled grenades (RPGs) small arms fire
and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Meanwhile, Boensel said, Wilson's counter-
parts back in Jax continued care for active duty,
family members and retired veterans. That is a
huge component in keeping deployed service
member's morale up he said. "A service mem-
ber who isn't worried about his family's well-
being is a service member who is more focused
on his job," Boensel remarked.
The guests were then offered brief tours of
various hospital departments. Points of inter-
est included the Emergency Department,
the Maternal Infant Unit and the Dental
Department. The Hospital Dental Department
provided a break-out session specifically to
take advantage of the network communica-
tions opportunity with their civilian network
counterparts.
"Jacksonville is truly a Navy Town," Boensel
said, noting that he will be transferring to a
new duty assignment in a couple of months.
"There truly is not a better Navy town than
Jacksonville," he added, as he thanked the
guests for their support of the Navy and the
hospital. He concluded by saying of the men
and women he has served with, "They truly are
the finest the nation has to offer and you are
awfully lucky to have them."
