The City of St. Marys
and The Trust for
Public Land (TPL),
a national non-profit land
conservation organization,
are looking for Camden
County residents interested
in recreation and conser-
vation to participate in a
series of public participation
meetings on May 22 and 23
that will help formulate the
county's top recreation and
conservation goals.
The city and TPL are
working together to create a
Camden County Greenprint
that will be used by coun-
ty and city leaders as they
make decisions about con-
serving historical, natu-
ral and recreational lands;
creating trails and links to
parks, waterfronts and open
spaces; and preserving and
improving the overall qual-
ity of life along the Georgia
coast. The Greenprint will
be based on shared commu-
nity values and supported
by state-of-the-art comput-
er-based modeling. Copies
of the finished Greenprint
maps and reports will be
made available to the public
after the project is complet-
ed in October 2007.
All are welcome at any or
all of the four public meet-
ings listed below. Each
meeting will follow the
same participatory format.
Participants should plan
to attend for the duration
of a meeting so their input
can be captured and they
can hear from friends and
neighbors. Food and bever-
ages will be provided. The
meetings are scheduled for

The weather this time of
the year is normally very
humid with substantial
rainfall. However, the weather
cycle this year has produced
parched and dry conditions,
which has put many cities and
towns on alert for preventing
fires and conserving valuable
water resources.

Due to the drought level conditions, sprinkler systems are on a time schedule. The schedule is
broken in up into odd and even days by address. Odd numbered addresses water their lawn
on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Even numbered addresses water their lawn on Monday,
Wednesday, and Saturday.
Due to the drought, Georgia
residents and businesses,
including Kings Bay, are sub-
ject to five levels of restric-
tions on outdoor water use.
The drought levels range from
minimal restriction by time of
day and day of the week to a
full ban on all uses except for
exempted uses.
"The water control plan
actually applies to all times
of the day," said Kings Bay
Environmental Engineer Mike
Huber. "With the five levels
that (Georgia has), people are
requested to follow the odd/
even watering schedule to
help with preventing any of
the events that have been hap-
opening throughout southeast
Georgia. This also applies to
Kings Bay, because the base
is permitted by the state to
distribute water through our
water systems."
Rainfall history over the last
few years has shown a serious
decline from about 70 inches
of rain in 2005 to about 41
inches of rain in 2006.
The drought is also affect-
ing southeast Georgia in many

The old saying goes "You, and
me and baby make three." For a
Marine and his wife at NSB Kings
Bay, to make that rhyme true they must
multiply by four.
Lance Cpl. Vernon Linnabary of the
Marine Corps Security Force on base
and his wife Clarrissa are having qua-
druplets due to be born in late June or
early July.
When couples have children their
lives are changed forever, according to
Linnabary he didn't expect this kind of
life altering news.
"It was definitely a shock, that's for
sure," he said. "I didn't freak out or
anything, I am just very supportive of
my wife and our new family."'
When Clarrissa broke the news,
she didn't say the whole truth at first,
she told him about the pregnancy, but
waited about three days to break the
news about the extra members of their
family. "I thought at first it was just
twins, but after seeing the doctor a
second time he told me there was four,
I thought you are wrong, that cannot
be possible;'," she said. "When I told
Vernon, I was dropping hints, and he
figured out that we were having twins,
and I said we are having a few more
than that."'
Clarrissa is not new to multiply
births, she was a fraternal twin herself,
tical twin sons, which they have named
Vernon IV and Joseph Jeremy and two
fraternal twin girls named Elizabeth
Rose and Victoria Carolyn.
The major strain for any new fam-
ily is budgeting for a baby, which they
are trying to do. They have received
budgeting classes from The Kings
Bay Fleet and Family Support Center,
received grants and advice from the
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and
support from other Marines and Navy
personnel who realize the strain on
the pocketbook that having children
can be. In addition they have received
help from merchants in the local com-
munity.
They received some discounted
furniture, have set up a registry with
Wal-Mart if people wish to purchase
some items of need that are on their
list. Also they received an unheard of
discount price on a sport utility vehicle
from a car dealership in St. Marys and
a four bedroom upgrade in base hous-
ing. According to Vernon Linnabary,
you can never prepare enough for hav-
ing children, you have to take each day
one at a time.
"It is definitely going to be a chal-
lenge," he said. "We will have to take
one thing at a time and tackle the prob-
lem and move on. We have received
support from the Navy, the commu-
nity and especially the support from
my extended family of the Kings Bay
Marine Corps'."
and she just received news that her
sister is pregnant with triplets. When
most people think of multiply births,
it is usually from fertility drugs for
people who have trouble conceiving.
For Linnabary, she was warned by her
physician that multiple births are a dif-
fident possibility, which Clarrissa and
her sister have proven.
"The doctors said it was possible,
but I thought that would only happen
with drugs," she said. "We were plan-
ning to have a baby, but not four."
The Linnabarys are having two iden-

Individual Augmentee is quickly becoming a familiar term
with not only Soldiers and Marines but also with Sailors.
Navy officials estimate there are more than 10,000 Sailors
in IA duty assignments all over the world and nearly half the
4,300 Sailors serving in Iraq are lAs. Although many IAs are
performing duty on the front lines, which is not defined in
their rate manual. One Sailor at Kings Bay accepted an IA
assignment to get back to the job he is trained for, to provide
health and comfort and boost morale for those fighting the
war on terrorism.
Public Works Safety Petty Officer BU1 Victor Byrdsong
recently returned to the Southeastern Georgia Trident Missile
base after serving 13 months in Iraq.
Most IA duty assignments are six-month deployments to
mainly Iraq or Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Byrdsong is no strang-

NAVADMIN 103/07 distributed to the fleet April 24.
Officers who do not have a photograph on the electronic
military personnel records system in their current grade
must submit a photograph before Sept. 30. The preferred
uniform will be service khaki without a cover. When service
khaki is unavailable, any regulation uniform is acceptable.
The public affairs center detachment located at NS

Volunteers Needed for USO Welcome Center
The USO Welcome Center Jacksonville International
Airport (JIA) is a wonderful facility providing a safe haven
to military members. Our scheduled hours are 9 a.m. to
Midnight Monday through Thursday; and 9 am Friday
through 9 pm Sunday, 365 days a year. Our goal is to
remain open 24/7, but we need your help.
Visitors to the Welcome Center are either departing the
area and need a place to "hang out" until their flight leaves,
or are arriving and need assistance traveling to their duty
station.
Since opening on Veteran's Day, 2004, we've assisted
more than 7,000 Visitors annually and continue to receive
many expressions of gratitude. Due to the time involved in
training, operational procedures, and security issues, we
only accept volunteers who can make a weekly commit-
ment to a specific shift.
Individuals must be able to attend training before they
can volunteer. Training is generally held on Monday,
Friday, or Saturday evenings from 5 to 9 pm. In order to
volunteer, you must have access to email and be able to
check daily.

On The Home Front
Navy husband, mentor, example
By Beth Wiruth

Often when we think
about military spouses
we immediately think
of wives left behind while their
male service member deploys.
Since the 1970's women are
increasingly filling the ranks of
our military. This means men
are among those left behind.
I assumed men would
breeze through deployment
without a glitch. But I discov-
ered they experience many of
the same things as women but
their approach to facing these
challenges can help us all.
Meet Will Moore, father, vet-
eran and Navy spouse. Will
and I met in 2004 just prior to
deployment of the Stennis. His
wife and my husband worked
in the same division. Will
attended the Family Support
Group (FSG) meeting, the only
husband among many, many
Navy wives. As I observed him
I thought to myself, "This will
be his first, and last, FSG meet-
ing." I was wrong. Not only did
Will become a vital part of the
FSG, he became a friend and
support to many, including
this author.
Bonnie and Will Moore cel-
ebrated their 141 anniversary
May 1. Will, a Navy veteran, is
medically disabled. Bonnie, a
hospital corpsman, currently
serves at the medical clinic
at NAS Whidbey Island. They
have two children; Kailanni,
11 and eight year old Tatyana.
Prior to 9/11 Bonnie worked
for United Airlines. A Navy
'junior' (term for children of
Sailors) Bonnie felt she need-
ed to join the Navy.
When asked how he felt
about that decision Will
smiles, "Oh, I totally support-
ed her, but I did think she was
crazy." In 2003 Bonnie (and
Will) joined the Navy. Will calls
Bonnie his hero, "She joined
the Navy older, persevered
through FMT Field Medical
Training) with the Marines,
and continues to excel. She is
my hero."
Since her enlistment, Will
and Bonnie have been sepa-
rated for multiple schools,
deployment and more schools.
As we spoke Will mentioned
that she maybe facing another
deployment on the Comfort,
the Navy's west coast medi-
cal ship.Will comments on his
philosophy of marriage and
how the Navy impacts that,
"Marriage means we're one.
When you take away half of me
it hurts. It hurts me and it hurts
Bonnie. But the way I look at it
is I'm in the Navy, too. I joined
the Navy with Bonnie. And it
is just as rough on me as the
ladies!" Men experience the
cycle of deployment just the
same as women. Will's key to
coping? Take it one day at a
time, do what you can do each
day and fill the emptiness by
discovery; discover yourself,
your family, your children,
your community.
So how does he handle the
challenges of Navy life? "Take
time out to worry about oth-
ers." Those words are his life
message. Of the many times
we talked over the last five
years Will was not calling me,
the Ombudsman, for him-
self. Rather, he was calling on
behalf of others. From the cus-
todial single dad he 'adopted'
the single mom with a dia-
betic child, the young spouse
in need of friendship and
more, Will was taking care of
those around him, those he
took the time to worry about.
He ran a car pool for children
of the neighborhood, watched
kids after school, served as the
alternate emergency contact
person for many school chil-
dren of his neighborhood. Will
regular calls spouses to "check
in" with them.
Will said the Navy helped
him develop a keen sense of
humor. Being the stay at home
dad of girls gives him many
opportunities to blush and
laugh. Laughing, Will declares,
"You have to develop a sense
of humor; you have to find the
laughter in the midst of hard
times."
Will offers this advice to
other spouses, both men and
Beth Wiruth

women. "Stay busy. Fully uti-
lize the support group for sup-
port, information and knowl-
edge. And remember, keep in
mind, that your Sailor is going
through just as much as you
are, they are working hard,
they get tired and they are
going through just as much
as you."
Willcloseswith this lastpiece
of advice, "Dare to care for
others." He offered that while
IM'ing (Instant Messaging) a
Navy friend, supporting her
through a challenging transi-
tion to a new base.

Local productions offer genuine entertainment in Camden
By Paul Kraack

F ightin; Faith and Family
and Alice in Wonderland
are history. Both per-
formed to record audiences in
their final shows. Both produc-
tions brought to mind serious
questions and offered audi-
ences genuinely entertaining
performances. We will deal
with the serious questions,
eventually. Right now, enter-
tainment revelations are most
important.
There is a scene in "Fightin;
Faith and Family" where one
of the cast's youngest mem-
bers drags an ax across stage,
pretending he is going to try
and help his stage dad by split-
ting some wood. His "show
father," showing perception
about kids and heavy tools,
discourages him by arguing
that if he attempted to chop the
wood, he would probably "cut
off his foot." Our young, highly
energetic thespian drops the
ax in mock disgust and shouts
"Aw, shucks!" much to the
audience's delight. Perceptive
audience members might
have noticed that young Ben
Parrott, our prospective wood-
cutter, was barefoot. What they
could not have known is that
off stage, before and after that
scene, he was getting medical
attention from a doctor. Seems
the young actor's choice to
perform sans footwear cost
him a few painful moments
while Dr. Paul Cosenza fixed
up his feet, removing the wood
splinters he picked up sprint-
ing across the stage platforms
prior to and during the perfor-
mance. Dr. Paul, an eye doctor
by training and practice, com-
mented, "well, I have a lot of
practice getting things out of
people's eyes, I figured I could
get those splinters out of Ben's
feet." And, with that, the pro-
duction moved on.
Cast member Fred Myers,
whose portrayal of Pastor
Butler, the leader of the early
Clinches Chapel congregation
always moves me. On Friday,
Fred asked if could we find a
way to dim his spotlight some
because he was having some
visual and physical reactions
to the lights. We tried and he
came through, never letting
audiences know his personal
pain, but poignantly sharing
the emotional struggles of
those early black citizens with
audiences in concert with his
fellow cast members. And I
never failed to be moved by
actress Vernal Morrison's
recital of one woman's com-
mentary on the days of segre-
gation; how hurtful and disap-
pointing those historical days
were, and yet how philosophi-
cal she was about her life and
her treatment in the past. Her
delivery of the lines about the
importance of forgiveness and
the quality of forgiveness (if
you don't forget the injustice,

T he continuing dry
weather and addi-
tional strong winds are
expected to inflame the major
fires that have been burning
in Georgia since a power line
was struck by a falling tree
more than three weeks ago.
The largest fire in Georgia's
history, known as the Sweat
Farm Road Fire for its start-
ing point, followed by the
Big Turnaround Fire togeth-
er have been responsible for
the destruction of more than
100,000 acres of timber and
vegetation, dozens of homes
and the evacuation of more
than 100 people.
"It was started by a tree
that fell on a power line," said
Georgia Forestry Commission
Public Information Officer
Eric Mosley. "One of the guys
working for the timber com-
pany here and one of the first
firefighters to arrive on the
scene saw exactly where the
fire started, but it spread so
quickly it was impossible to
contain."
Fire departments from all
across Georgia and surround-
ing states sent volunteers to
help stop the flames before
they could displace more fam-
ilies from their homes. Many
of the firefighters to respond
were off duty, bringing their
auxiliary trucks with them
to assist in the firefighting of
Georgia's largest flames to
date.
"A combination of winds,
heat and low humidity forced
this fire to become very wild
very quickly, said Mosley.
"We have over a hundred fire
trucks attempting to control
the fire at any given time, and
this means that our firefighters
end up working more than 12
hours every day even though
we have more than 800 per-
sonnel on scene at all times."
According to Mosley, the
Georgia Forestry Commission
has been working with Federal
and Waycross personnel as
one team, drawing together
plans and coordinating efforts
to pass instructions down the
chain of communication to
those firefighters facing the
blazes.
To battle the fire, state con-
tractors started controlled
burnings throughout the pre-
dicted path of the flames in
The tallest electric poles stand at about 50 feet. These flames, photographed just a few miles
from the Ware County Middle School, easily overtake the trees at more than 100 feet high.
A CH-47 Chinook flies over
a nearby lake, rapidly low-
ering it's 2000 gallon bag
to collect cool water, which
it flies back to dump over
the hot blazes. "When the
water from that chopper
hits the flames, while you
are trying to fight them with
a regular fire hose, you can
really feel the heat back off
a little," said CS1 (SS) Jeffrey
Lay, who volunteered sever-
al times to drive to Waycross
during his time off.
Route 1 remains closed as the fire continues to border the
road, constantly attempting to jump over to the eastern side
of the highway as it makes its way south. There are several
checkpoints on either side of the highway approaching the
fire, making it impossible to drive past without official busi-
ness or proof of residency. Various aircraft are constantly seen
circling the heavy rising clouds of smoke in the sky.
order to lessen the magnitude
of the inferno. This involves
intentionally setting cool fires
to combustible fuels like dry
grass and brush among the
trees, and keeping a close
eye on the controlled fires to
ensure they remain in control.
State correction workers, who
were enrolled in a five year
program to become volunteer
firefighters in exchange for
their release, were tasked to
create roads and trenches to
help narrow the spread of the '. /
fire and allow fire truck access .*
to hard-to-reach places.
Hunter Army Airfield in
Savannah sent up to four CH-
47 Chinooks rigged to scoop
and dump over 2000 gallons of
water every few minutes from
a nearby lake. Several UH-1
Huey helicopters also assist-
ed with similar contraptions .,

dumps. Even Cessna Single

FIRE: Residents
need to monitor fires

used to gather information about the direction of the fire while
in constant contact with emergency coordinators.
"This is a pretty bad situation because it's the worst fire in
Georgia's history," said Georgia Forestry Commission Safety
Officer Mark Munns. "I've been all over this country to help
fight fires and I would have to equate this fire to the Missionary
Ridge Fire that occurred in Colorado in late June 2002." Indeed,
according to the latest estimates, the Georgia fires have reached
well over 100,000 acres to become even bigger than the Colorado
fire of 2002 when as many as 73,391 acres of thick valley forest
was destroyed.
According to Georgia Forestry Commission and Homeland
Security websites other fires have started burning in nearby
Brantley, Wayne, Charlton and Atkinson Counties the days and
weeks following the initial Sweat Farm Road Fire. These fires are
all unrelated, but are further evidence of the extreme drought
conditions in Georgia right now. Unconfirmed reports indi-
cate that several of these fires have been initiated on purpose,
although investigations are still underway and this information
is not verifiable.
According to the National Interagency Fire Center Website,
residents of Waycross, Jacksonville and neighboring communi-
ties to the fires need to continuously monitor official advisories
for the status of the fires and the potential for harmful smoke
inhalation. Anyone with respiratory illness should stay indoors,
according to the website. This site offers the most up-to-date
information about the fires, safety precautions and relief effort
information.
"This fire is very exhausting to fight, but it also demands a lot
of respect," said CSI(SS) Jeffrey Lay, volunteer firefighter at the
Kingsland Fire Department who has driven to Waycross as a vol-
unteer almost every off day he had during the past three weeks.
"Many of our younger firefighters have had the opportunity to
experience what it is like to deal with a real emergency. This fire
is definitely a once in a lifetime experience for many of us, but I
can also imagine that it is what hell might look like."

The Sweat Farm Road Fire and the Big Turnaround Fire have been responsible for more than 100,000 acres of destruction, with
hundreds of homes evacuated and two dozen destroyed. The effects of these flames can be seen as far away as Central Florida,
where the winds carry smoke and ashes to agitate those with asthma and other breathing problems.

Orange County Firefighter Brian Harden had spent the last eight hours battling Georgia's Sweat Farm Fire.
Now he takes a few minutes to drink water and eat. "I even forgot that I was hungry, because the only thing
'I can see when I close my eyes is thick hot smoke and flames," said Harden.
Standing just across the road, the firefighters can feel the excessive heat from this
inferno, making it next to impossible to get close enough to the fire to fight it.

IRAQ I'm proud
Continued from Page 1
for an additional six months.. He spent the first
three months of his tour with SEAL team Three
in Bagdad in a more secure area behind the
Green (International) Zone and the rest of the
time with SEAL team five at Fallujah. His main
duties were building structures on bases to
improve living conditions for those serving in
the area. Even though his duties did not include
combat on the front lines, the danger of war
was never far away.
"The area we were in was no less danger-
ous than outside the walls," he said. "We could
hear bombs exploding outside and we received
sniper fire and mortar attacks in side the camp.
You needed to always be on alert."
Some of the projects Byrdsong built dur-
ing his tour include a 2400 sq. ft. gymna-
sium for the camp, an 1800 sq. ft. Morale,
Welfare and Recreation (MWR) center, a 600
sq. ft. Communications Room and a Briefing
that I built something that will stand long after Im gone
and Ready room for the SEAL teams to use.
Byrdsong and his crew actually did more build-
ing than back at their duty stations in the
United States. Contractors do most of the
building projects at bases around the world.
According to Byrdsong, it was good to get back
to performing the job he was trained for.
'The reason I extended over there was
because my job here was going away," he said.
"Public Works was changing some things while
I was away and my job at self help was eliminat-
ed. I decided to put my skills as a builder and
safety officer to use where help was needed."
The job in Iraq is not an 8-5 shift. The
Seabee units were on call 24 hours a day. They
made a lot of changes to make living condi-
tions bearable for the troops stationed on the
base. In 2003 when Byrdsong was last there, air
conditioning was only a dream. Now all indoor
areas have air conditioning. They added run-
ning water and brought in trailers where some
stay, to try and bring some comfort for service
members. Their experience was also needed to
repair facilities because of the blistering heat.
According to Byrdsong, the new MWR center
was a place of refugee for many to relax for the
few hours they had. The center had billiard and
ping pong tables, television and internet and
e-mail services for Sailors to keep in touch with
family and friends. According to Byrdsong, his
crew was the key to providing health and com-
fort as a way to show their support to the war
effort.
"We had a great crew. They gave a hundred
percent effort toward every job we had." He
said. "After awhile the work became repeti-
tious because the design of the building was the
same. Our skills helped out a lot of people in
the long run."'
In addition to building and repairing facili-
ties on base, they were some times called on to
build secret projects for the SEAL team. This
was sometimes a very dangerous situation.
All members on base are required to carry
weapons. But when they starting building,
their mind was on the work at hand and armed
guards had to escort them to the build site off
base. According to Byrdsong, this was the real-
ization that his life could be taken at any time if
you are not careful
"Once you leave the camp and are among
them, your senses are heightened," he said.
"Your head is on a swivel at all times, because
you never know where it is going to come from,
danger was always present,"
Although Byrdsong was there to put up struc-
tures to improve quality of life for Sailors, the
memory he wants to take home is a sense of
accomplishment.
"I like the fact that I am gone, but my build-
ings are still standing," he said. "If I go back
there a year or two from now, I can say I built
that."'

world. From a dinner the-
ater, to club performance, to
shows aboard ship or even on
the front lines, these standup
comics have seen and done it
all, making them a surprising-
ly entertaining show for Kings
Bay listeners.
"We don't do a lot of adult
entertainment here on base,
and they don't have much
of it out in Camden County,
so when it is offered to our
patrons at no charge, we
like to seize the opportunity
and make the best of it," said
Alice Hurley, head of MWR
Community Support.
MWR setup a hours d'oeuvres

Have you completed your PHA?
All active-duty personnel require a Preventive Health
Assessment annually. The assessment must be complete
within the past 12 months in order to participate in the
semi-annual command fitness assessment or the reme-
dial fitness program. A PHA consists of a one-on-one
review of your health record and health status with a Naval
Branch Halth Clinic corpsman. This includes updating
your record for deployment. A PHA is not the same as
a medical screening for the CFA, which must be done
separately. PHAs should be scheduled in the same month
as your birthday. Call Military Medicine at 573-8801 to
schedule a PHA.
Protect your base identification
Operational Security is the responsibility of all hands.
Controlling access to the base is one of the most important
roles of our security force as they provide a safe and secure
environment for all of us. Control of your issued base
access badge is a critical component of controlling base
access. Do not leave your badge unattended, especially in
your vehicle, the gym locker room, or other places where
it could be stolen.

It is effecting where we get our

"As far drinking water as
goes, it is affecting the dry
ground and making us have
to supplement with irriga-
tion water instead," said Civil
Engineer and Utility Manager
at NSB Kings Bay Public
Works Tommy Sailors. "When
the drought went in effect, it
was mainly our irrigation and
sprinkler systems that took the
biggest hit. But in all reality,
we are just asking for people
to cut back on the times and
dates that people are using
their sprinkler systems."

"The reason why we are
so big on the charcoal grills
is due to the fact that many
people do not know how to
properly extinguish the grills,
which causes us to find the
flames being pushed off into
the woods," said Fire Chief
Danny Young. "Another one of
the big issues we are looking
to stop is driver's who throw
there cigarette's out of their
cars, which is causing a lot of
the small fires."
Aside from the Fire

interest in helping out with
drought condition before
things worsen, the staff at NSB
Kings Bay Family Housing has
come together and assisted in
the helping with the drought.
"Our main contribution to
helping with the drought is not

Housing Installation Program
Manager Paul Petroski. "We
stopped do that because it is
using excess water and we are
looking to assist in anyway we
can."
Georgia Governor Sonny
Perdue issued an executive
order recently declaring a state
of emergency in 21 counties
in Southeast Georgia. These
counties face severe drought
conditions, which have cre-
ated an extreme and wide-
spread threat for wildland
fires. The director of Georgia's
Environmental Protection
Division also recently declared
a level two drought response
for the entire state. The decla-
ration requires that Georgians
immediately follow a more
stringent outdoor water use
'to success
schedule. The level two
drought response schedule
is as follows: odd-numbered
addresses may water only
on Tuesday, Thursdays and
Sunday, midnight to 10 a.m.;
even-numbered and unnum-
bered addresses may water
only on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Saturdays, midnight to 10
a.m.
"The state of Georgia is
committed to being there to
help these communities for as
long as it takes to put the-
ses fires out," Perdue said. "I
continue to be impressed by
the remarkable resolve of our
emergency responders and
the residents of the affected
counties."
