April 30 marked the 14th day since the start of the forest fire in Waycross. That Monday
more than two weeks ago people were surprised to find ashes falling down from the sky as far
south as Jacksonville. Two weeks later, as if to mark its age, the largest fire Georgia has ever
seen sent smoke and ash into Camden County and as far south as Orlando, Fla., forcing NSB
Kings Bay gate security guards and others working outside for prolonged periods to wear air-
filtering masks. "These masks don't seem to help much against this thick smoke," said Robert
Hernandez as he watch at Franklin Gate.
The worst wildfire in Georgia history has
consumed forests, destroyed homes and
displaced residents in neighboring Ware
and Brantley Counties since it began April 16.
Although it is more than 30 miles west of the
base, the fire is affecting Sailors from Kings Bay
in many ways.
Known as the Sweat Farm Road Fire for its
starting point, it is responsible for the destruc-
tion of more than 100,000 acres of timber and
vegetation as well as 22 homes burned and the
evacuation of more than 100 residents.
"It was started by a tree that fell on a power
line," said Georgia Forestry Commission Public
Information Officer Eric Mosley. "We actually
had two people on the scene who witnessed
the fire begin. One of the guys working for
the timber company here and one of the first
firefighters to arrive on the scene saw exactly
where the fire started, but it spread so quickly it
was impossible to contain."
Kings Bay residents who were outside on
the evening of April 16 noticed ashes falling
from the sky, accompanied by a familiar thick
smell of burning wood. Traveling more than
100 miles south from the fire, the choking ashes
and smoke subsided two days later, as winds
shifted and calmed. Meanwhile, fire depart-
ments from all across Georgia and surrounding
states sent volunteers to help stop the flames
before they could displace more families from
their homes.
Forestry officials working the fire have said
a combination of prolonged dry weather and
strong winds assisted in creating the monster
it is now.
"A combination of winds, heat and low
humidity forced this fire to become very wild
very quickly, said Mosley. "We have more than
a hundred fire trucks attempting to control the
fire at any given time, and this means that our
firefighters end up working more than 12 hours
every day."

Auction held April 28 at the NSB Kings Bay
Fitness Center.
The themed event "Night of a Thousand
Stars" was held to help raise funds to award
$3,225 scholarships to more than 135 college-
bound students who are unmarried children
or stepchildren of Navy submariners. The
scholarships are renewed automatically for up
to four years of undergraduate study, as long as
the students remain in good standing at their
college or university. According to Brandy
Lipps, a senior at the University of Georgia and
2003 scholarship recipient, the extra money is
a big boost to help meet the cost of a college
education.
"There is no way to express how much this
scholarship has helped me with my college
education," she said. "This was the biggest
scholarship I received. The scholarship has
really helped out, I wouldn't have been able to
get this far with out it"

other hor'dourves and desserts, raising more
than $30,000 for the Scholarship foundation.
According to Gold Dolphin Representative
Nicole Woodard, the money raised is to pro-
vide the means for a deserving student to reach
their goals.
"I think everyone here is supporting their
children and submariner children around the
country;' she said. "This was an evening of
fun and for a worthy result, the education for
deserving students."
The event also featured a time honored tradi-
tion of the awarding of the "Big Pig." The event
started in 1998 at the Ninth Annual Auction.
The theme that year was "County Fair" with
a pie eating competition during the intermis-
sion. Since then, it has become a tradition to
award the pig to the command with the most
enthusiasm for the auction theme. It has been
given to the command with the fastest grape
stompers during a toga party, the bravest and
fastest hot pepper eater at a Cinqu de Mayo
theme and the best table center piece at last
years party. The pig has been a great symbol of
camaraderie. He has been pig-napped by the
"Spamshiners" and held for ransom, put in jail
and even gone to sea. The 2007 victor was the
USS Wyoming (SSBN 742) crew with their cos-
tume rendition of Reno 911. According to Asst.
Operation Officer Lt. Adam Sipp, it was a great
way to show the ships spirit.
"We had a great time and winning the pig
was just an added benefit," he said. "This event
is a great way for the officers and chiefs to give
back to make a college education scholarship
available for a young person. We had great
participation and deputized the pig as a proud
member of the crew."

Most of us are glad to
see warmer weather
finally arrive, and we
look forward to the outdoor
activities that go along with
this time of year. However,
we must be aware that with
warm weather comes the risk
for heat illness.
First, some definitions:
When heat stress (the net
heat load on the body from air
temperature and solar load or
other radiant heat, taking into
account the body's ability to
shed that heat) increases, the
body's response (which can
include sweating and shifting
of blood to the skin to achieve
radiational cooling) is known
as heat strain. When heat
strain is excessive, the result is
heat illness, which can range
from mild to life threatening.
Types of Heat Illnesses
Heat illnesses, in order from
mild to severe, include:
Early Heat Illness. Results
from reduced blood flow to the
brain as the body moves blood
to the extremities to try to shed
heat. Symptoms include mild
dizziness, fatigue, or irrita-
bility, decreased concentra-
tion, and impaired judgment.
Anyone showing these signs
should be moved to a shaded
area, loosen their clothing as
much as possible, and drink
as much cool water as he/she
can tolerate.
Heat Rash (Prickly Heat).
Appears as red papules
(bumps), particularly in areas
where clothing is restrictive. A
prickly sensation may result,
especially as sweating increas-
es. Heat rash is extremely
uncomfortable and may inter-
fere with sweating. This is

Door prizes and the chance to get a higher educa-
tion were all available at the annual education fair
held April 25 at NSB Kings Bay. The fair was held to
introduce civilians and Sailors as well as their family mem-
bers to the Navy College Program Distance Partnership and
Apprenticeship Programs.
In today's Navy, an education is a very important tool to
have. To be promoted to senior chief, Sailors must have an
associate's degree or better. According to NSB Kings Bay Navy
College Director Susan Wheless, Navy College has the pro-
grams to help Sailors further their careers.
"I feel that this is a good way for people to find out what is
available to them educationally," said Wheless. "Now that the
Navy is requiring Sailors to have an associates degree in order
to be promoted to E-8, the schools that are being represented
at the fair are the schools that have the rate relative degrees
that can be posted in their service records, which can give
them the ability to get promoted quicker."
More than 120 Sailors showed up to see what the fair had to

Briefly Speaking
New Photo Requirement for Officer Records
All officers are now required to have a full-length color
photograph in their official military file, according to
NAVADMIN 103/07 distributed to the fleet April 24.
Officers who do not have a photograph on the electronic
military personnel records system in their current grade
must submit a photograph before Sept. 30. The preferred
uniform will be service khaki without a cover. When service
khaki is unavailable, any regulation uniform is acceptable.
The public affairs center detachment located at NS
Mayport, Fla. is the tri-base source for all official photo-
graphs. It is recommended officers needing a full-length
photo for selection board purposes prior to Sept. 30
call (904) 270-7762 and set up an appointment with the
detachment.
When official facilities are not available, officers are
authorized to use commercial sources. If commercial
sources are unavailable, officer may submit any color pho-
tograph that complies with the requirements outlined in
MILPERSMAN 1070-180.
Volunteers Needed for USO Welcome Center
The USO Welcome Center Jacksonville International
Airport (JIA) is a wonderful facility providing a safe haven
to military members. Our scheduled hours are 9 a.m. to
Midnight Monday through Thursday; and 9 am Friday
through 9 pm Sunday, 365 days a year. Our goal is to
remain open 24/7, but we need your help.
Visitors to the Welcome Center are either departing the
area and need a place to "hang out" until their flight leaves,
or are arriving and need assistance traveling to their duty
station.
Since opening on Veteran's Day, 2004, we've assisted
more than 7,000 Visitors annually and continue to receive
many expressions of gratitude. Due to the time involved in
training, operational procedures, and security issues, we
only accept volunteers who can make a weekly commit-
ment to a specific shift.
Individuals must be able to attend training before they
can volunteer. Training is generally held on Monday,
Friday, or Saturday evenings from 5 to 9 pm. In order to
volunteer, you must have access to email and be able to
check daily.

Kings Bay observes Arbor Day
By MC2(SW) Michael Wiss

NSB Kings Bay reaf-
firmed its commit-
ment to being a good
steward of the environment
by planting an eight-foot wil-
low tree at the Transit Visitors
Quarter grounds April 24.
This was just one of the stan-
dards needed for Kings Bay
to strive toward becoming a
"Tree City USA" community.
Tree City USA is a tree
planting and tree care program
sponsored by the National
Arbor Day Foundation for cit-
ies, towns and communities
in the United States. There
are a few guidelines the base
must meet to be considered
for "Tree City USA." Evidence
is required that the commu-
nity has established a forestry
program that is supported by
an annual budget of $2 per
capital.
In addition, an Arbor Day
observance and proclamation
event or award ceremony that
honors leading tree planters
must be held.
According to NSB Kings Bay
Commanding Officer Capt.
Mike McKinnon, becoming a
Tree Citywill show how impor-
tant natural resources such as
trees are to the community.
"I think it is important to
recognize what the environ-
ment means to us;'," he said.
"We need to make people
aware that the Navy cares
about the environment and
that we're doing what is right
to protect and enrich the com-
munity:'
The Navy has made it a pri-
ority to protect and manage
the environment and natural
resources as part of the overall
mission.
One way the southeast-
ern Georgia base does this is
through the Environmental
Stewardship Program.
The program encourages
people serving in the Navy and
their families to participate in
natural resources and envi-
ronmental awareness, preser-
vation and community part-
nerships. Kings Bay is widely
known for its proactive natural
resources and environmen-
tal commitment. Examples
include:
-2007 GreatAmerican Clean
Up; a base and community
partnership, which recently
raised awareness about litter
and beautified our commu-
nity. More than 450 base and
community volunteers picked
up more than 275 bags of lit-
ter, tires and other debris from
area streets.

serve our natural resources.

ile and our natural resources
are limited, so how we choose
now to protect, manage and
live in concert with them will,
in large measure determine
the state of the Earth and our

Military family members speak a different language
By Beth Wiruth
Periscope contributor
This past week I attended
a luncheon for military
wives. The event was
sponsored and hosted by a
women's political group. Our
hosts were women from all
backgrounds and ages; gra-
cious and welcoming. Each
table was arranged to have a
nice ratio of group members
and military spouses.
I sat with fellow military
wife, Debbie. Debbie serves
as the co-ombudsman for my
husband's new command as
well as the Ombudsman for
her husband's air wing. As
is the custom when military
wives meet, they inevitably
talk about former commands,
relocation, bases, deployment,
moving and related military
topics. As we talked with our
hosts we found ourselves
defining terms we use daily.
The gracious six group
members at our table asked
many questions about our
lives, our lifestyle and our
service member. During the
course of the event all mili-
tary wives were asked to stand,
introduce themselves and tell
a bit about themselves. As
happens, as each succeeding
spouse spoke, they related to
previous wives in their com-
ments all the while using com-
mon military lingo.
In the midst of these intro-
ductions the group member
sitting next to me tapped me
on the shoulder and with a
most perplexed expression
declared, "You all have your
own lifestyle. You have your
own culture. I'm not sure how
to relate you to. You speak a
different language!"
A more telling moment
came a little later. The guest
speaker at this luncheon was
a talk show host from a local
radio station. She was a lovely,
astute and articulate woman.
And she was not sure what
to say to a group of military
wives. She mentioned that
after speaking with the mili-
tary spouses at her table she
realized our lifestyle is defined
by sacrifice and courage...and
she didn't know what to say to
us while acknowledging that
she knew no one who is serv-
ing in the Armed Forces.

4 THE PERISCOPE, NSB KINGS BAY, Thursday, May 3, 2007
By MCSA Dmitry Chepusov
Periscope staff
Many happy faces, hugs and cheers were the driving
force behind NSB Kings Bay's 11th Annual Georgia
Area 16 Special Olympics Games April 27. More than
500 motivated Sailors, Marines, defense contractors, Moral,
Welfare and Recreation Employees, and Camden County school
children gathered to welcome more than 50 busses filled with
young Special Olympic Athletes.
For these special athletes, the emphasis was not on winning,
but on having fun and competing. With so many participants
showing up this year, there was a need for one volunteer, or
buddy, for every athlete. Volunteers were needed to assist ath-
letes in getting to their events and back to the Olympic Village, a
resting spot full of relaxing games, shade and refreshments.
"I believe that this annual event gives us the opportunity to go
beyond regular community support," suggested RPl(FMF) Jason
Madison who coordinated this and last year's Special Olympics
events. "We never participate for any reward like prestige or
advertisement. We simply do it because we love to do it."
As each bus offloaded its athlete riders, they were greeted by
loud cheers and claps from hundreds of friendly smiles dressed
in yellow t-shirts. The volunteers were instructed prior to the
bus arrivals that their job was to make the athletes feel like real
celebrities. As the children stepped of the bus, they were paired
up with one or two volunteers who took them around to various
athletic stations.
One bus formed a team to play a game of volleyball in the
fitness complex, while another group headed to the bowling
alley. However, the majority of athletes walked from athletic
event to athletic event. Some of the outside activities included
the 100-meter dash, long jump, softball throw, and soccer ball
kick. Plenty of water stations and shaded areas were provided

"The Kings Bay building managers did a great job helping
prepare for this event," said Madison. "I also want to mention
the MWR folks who spent a lot of time and were very supportive
of the children. The Child Development Center also donated

have so many motivated young athletes visit us today," said
McKinnon. "Remember, have fun, but stay safe."
As each bus pulled up to let off the Special Olympic Athletes,
they were greeted by hundreds of Sailors, Marines, and other

The 11th Annual Kings Bay Special Olympics kicked off as soon as the last busses arrived and the athletes made it to the track.
With the help of the Kings Bay volunteers, these children walked proudly to the cheers and claps of everyone.
THE PERISCOPE, NSB KINGS BAY, Thursday, May 3, 2007 5
Although this little boy is expert at maneuvering his elec-
tric wheelchair where he needs it, his restricted movements
required special attention at the Rock 'n' Roll Lanes.
Every Special Olympics athlete received a medal at the end of the day. This event was not about winning but instead children
were encouraged to have fun and be active.
Crew members of the USS Wyoming (SSBN-742)(Blue) had a dif-
ficult time keeping up with this little boy, who ran everywhere he
went, full of excitement with a big smile on his face.
Children had a chance to throw a softball three times to com-
pete for the longest distance. Every child's score was recorded
and given back to the child's school for record keeping.

supplies and people to help out. So many people were part
of the Special Olympics this year that everything fell together
smoothly, making my job of coordinating very easy."
The Special Olympics began in 1962 when Eunice Kennedy
Shriver started a day camp at her home for people with special
needs. After seeing the impact of the day camp, she decided to
create a program that would provide people with special needs
with the opportunity to compete in physical events, which
would improve their physical fitness and their self-esteem. The
first International Special Olympics Games was held in Chicago
in 1968.
After almost two hours of activity, the children regrouped
with their individual schools, and the volunteers gathered at the
BBQ pit, where the building managers had prepared hundreds
of hot dogs and hamburgers, served with chips and soft drinks.
There was exhilaration in the air. It seemed that this event was
very heart-warming in its nature.
"The kids were fun, so I tried to help out as much as I could,"
said MM2(SS) Douglas Sommer. 'A lot of the kids came up to me
to shake my hand. I could feel their happiness because we were
there for them. I like helping people, and this was everyone's
chance to give back to the community. It warmed my heart to
see those smiles. My motto is: smiles are free, don't save them,
Share them."
S .. ...
Those children who could not walk did not miss out on the fun and excitement of the day. The individual attention from the
volunteers and the cheering crowd were more than enough to put smiles on the faces of even the most challenged children.

gible service members up to $10,000 for becoming public
school teachers. The next Troops to Teachers brief will be

Mail policy
If you live in the barracks, do not use your building and
room number as your address. Mail is not delivered to
the barracks. Using your command address will speed up
delivery of your mail and prevent delay. If you are assigned
to NSB Kings Bay, please include your work center in your
address. For civilians receiving official/job related mail
through the NSB Kings Bay Mailroom, include your com-
mand and work center in your address.
Commissary holiday hours
The NSB Kings Bay Commissary will close on the
Tuesday following Columbus Day, Christmas, New Year's
Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial
Day and Labor Day. The commissary will also close on
Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July, but will remain open
on Veterans Day.
Have you completed your PHA?
All active-duty personnel require a Preventive Health
Assessment annually. The assessment must be complete
within the past 12 months in order to participate in the
semi-annual command fitness assessment or the reme-
dial fitness program. A PHA consists of a one-on-one
review of your health record and health status with a Naval
Branch Halth Clinic corpsman. This includes updating
your record for deployment. A PHA is not the same as
a medical screening for the CFA, which must be done
separately. PHAs should be scheduled in the same month
as your birthday. Call Military Medicine at 573-8801 to
schedule a PHA.
Protect your base identification

your vehicle, the gym locker room, or other places where
it could be stolen.

A conservation and arts
project is currently underway
in Woodbine to establish the
town as a bird sanctuary.
The Woodbine Woman's
Club is partnering with the
City of Woodbine, Gateway

cally as Woodbine's African-
American school children
walked the rail track to the
school house at Gethsemane
Church Association grounds.
Currently in great need of sta-
bilization and rehabilitation,
this school is still standing
and could be saved by citizens
organizing to recover this his-
toric building. For more infor-
mation, call 576-6991.

HEAT Pregnancy increases the likelihood of heat related injuries
Continued from Page 1
treated by keeping the skin as cool and dry as possible.
Heat Edema. This is swelling of the hands and feet associated
with heat exposure. It is uncomfortable, but will get better if the
patient is moved to a cooler area and elevates his or her legs.
Heat Cramps. These are usually associated with inadequate
salt replacement and are frequently seen in un-acclimatized
individuals. They differ from exertion cramps in that heat
cramps tend to "wander" as individual muscle bundles contract
while exertion cramps involve the entire muscle. These are
treated by rest, appropriate acclimatization, and adequate salt
intake.
Heat Syncope. This is seen when personnel stand still for long
periods of time in the heat (such as in formation). In addition
to blood being redirected to the skin surface to shed heat, blood
also pools in the lower extremities during long periods of stand-
ing. As a result the brain is depleted of blood flow. Such fainting
is transient and there is no lasting effect. Pregnancy increases
the likelihood of heat syncope. Treatment is similar to that for
early heat illness.
Heat Exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is a multi-symptom dis-
order resulting from an increase in body temperature and/or
dehydration, with or without salt depletion. Signs and symp-
toms of heat exhaustion include:
*Profuse or decreased sweating
*Decreased blood pressure, leading to signs and symptoms of
shock (rapid pulse, faintness, confusion)
*Headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, lack of coor-
dination
*Rectal temperature usually elevated (around 102 oF)
Heat Stroke. Heat stroke represents the collapse of the body's
temperature-regulating mechanism and will lead to death if
untreated. The following signs and symptoms are indicative of
heat stroke:
*Rectal temperature 104 oF or greater
*Hot, dry skin (If the victim has progressed from heat exhaus-
tion to heat stroke, his/her skin may still be damp from sweat
before his/her cooling system shut down)
*Convulsions, delirium, vomiting, unconsciousness
*Bleeding may be seen from the nose or gums
For more information on heat illnesses, please contact the
Industrial Hygiene Division at extensions 4272, 4159, or 4223.
AUCTION Event raised thousands of dollars
Continued from Page 1
The verbal auction took bids for items
donated by the different submarine commands
at Kings Bay. Some of these include a Strategic
Weapon Facility Atlantic golf package for 24
people which includes green fees and cart;
Naval Submarine Support Command Hoe
Down Pool Party at Laurel Island and USS
Wyoming (SSBN 742) Gold Jacksonville Suns
Sky Deck Party which includes all you can eat
burgers and dogs for 40 people and admission
tickets to a Suns baseball game. According to
Group Ten Chief of Staff Capt. David Volonino,
it was a great night to raise money, eat some
good food and enjoy the camaraderie of cur-
rent and former members of the submarine
force.
"This is a huge event. It is not only one of the
most anticipated social events of the year, but
a great charitable way to provide scholarship
money for the children of the submariner com-
munity," he said.
FAIR: Navy College has a lot to offer servicemembers
Continued from Page 1
offer. Many of them liked what
they saw.
"I think this was an excel-
lent opportunity for Sailors
to get the chance to see what
schools there are out there for
us," said EM2 (SS) James Ross.
"I think it was a good way
for the Navy to show that they
really care about our educa-
tion," said MM1 (SS) Michael
Nutt.
Aside from the Sailors who
participated in the fair, many
of the schools representatives
were excited at the prospect
helping servicemembers meet
their goals.
"The schools tell us that
we have the best participation
of any of the bases they go
to," said Wheless. "Sailors get
to talk to academic advisors
about their specific programs
or interests and it gives them
a way to find out the details
of the programs so that they
can make better choices about
what they what to get a degree
in.'
Aside form the fair, Navy
College has plenty to offer
including CLEP exams, on
base or online courses, and
even books on how to find
the colleges you want to go
to based on what degrees you
want.
"I really think the fair is
very beneficial to the military
because a lot of them do not
know that Valdosta State is on
base and that we do provide
Sailors with the basic cours-
es need for college credits,"
said Valdosta State University
Representative Sherri Wade.
"We also work very close with
each person to help them find
what they are looking for and if
we do not have it we try to help
them find schools that will
help them with their careers.
For more information

Wheless at 573-4527.

THE PERISCOPE, NSB KINGS BAY, Thursday, May 3, 2007 9
FIRE. People with respiratory ailments should limit exposure to
smoke
Continued from Page 1
According to Mosley, the
Georgia Forestry Commission
has been working with Federal
and Waycross personnel as
one team, drawing together
plans and coordinating efforts
to pass plans down the chain
of communication to those
firefighters facing the blazes.
"Most residents are very
happy with our efforts," said
Mosley. "Just by being out in
the community I have seen an
outpouring of thankfulness. A
firefighter goes to a restaurant
- they clap for you. He goes to
a coffee shop they won't let
you pay a dime. It's just amaz-
ing to feel the warmth and love
that the people of Waycross
and all of Georgia have been
displaying."
To battle the fire, state con-
tractors started controlled
burnings throughout the pre-
dicted path of the flames in
order to lessen the magnitude
of the inferno. State correction
workers, who were enrolled
in a five-year program to
become volunteer firefighters
in exchange for their freedom,
created roads and trenches to
help narrow the spread of the
fire and allow fire truck access
to hard-to-reach places.
Hunter Army Airfield in
Savannah, Ga. sent up to four
CH-47 Chinooks rigged to
scoop and dump over 2000
gallons of water every four
minutes each. Several UH-1
Huey helicopters also assisted
with similar bags capable of
250 gallon water dumps. Even
Cessna Single Engine Aircraft
are being used to gather infor-
mation about the direction of
the fire while in constant con-
tact with emergency coordina-
tors.
"My most prominent mem-
ory of the past few weeks was
driving down highway 84 on
Tuesday evening with other
firefighter volunteers from
the base," said NSB Kings Bay
Fire Department Crew Chief
Timothy Lee.
"There was fire everywhere
- that was the first time any
of us had seen this fire, and it
looked and felt like an infer-
no. There was not a problem
of finding a fire to fight that
night." According to Lee, they
were quickly set up into three
divisions with 20-30 trucks in a
division, "but we just couldn't
get to some of the property
that was surrounded by the
fire. We had to sit and watch it
burn," added Lee.
"One lady complained to me
a few days ago about having to
be evacuated the night before,"
continued Lee. "I told her that
all the people fighting this fire,
even the guy flying the heli-
copter, are all displaced from
their homes on account of this
fire. She hadn't looked at it
that way, and it helped her
deal with the situation a little."
"This is a pretty bad situ-
ation because it's the worst
fire in Georgia's history," said
Georgia Forestry Commission
Safety Officer Mark Munns.
"I've been all over this coun-
try to help fight fires and I
would have to equate this fire
to the Missionary Ridge Fire
that occurred in Colorado in
late June 2002."'
Smoke from Georgia's wild-
fires has spread throughout
southeast Georgia and north-
east Florida. However, state
and local officials are assur-
ing the public that there is no
immediate danger.
According to a press release
issued by the Georgia Office
of Homeland Security April
29, "County health officials in
southeast Georgia say that the
recent smoke from the wild-
fires has not resulted in an
increase in incidents relating
to difficulty breathing. They
credit this to public awareness
and support of health officials'
recommendations on limit-
ing exposure to the smoke.
Residents in and around the
fire area are encouraged to
continue monitoring smoke
conditions and air quality.
Anyone with a respiratory ill-
ness should stay indoors and
contact their doctor if they
experience symptoms such
as chest pain, chest tightness,
shortness of breath or severe
fatigue. This is important for
people with chronic lung and
heart disease and those who
have not been previously diag-
nosed as smoke may unmask
or produce symptoms of such
diseases. Residents returning
to homes that have been evac-
uated need to use caution.
There may be smoldering "hot
spots" which can lead to burns
or other injuries. Care should
be taken while cleaning up, as
irritants from the smoke may
become airborne."'
Firefighters have been
encouraged by the amount of
support they've received from
members of Georgia's local
communities, despite the
hardships some of the resi-
dents have had to endure.
"The supporthasbeengreat,
allowing us a good night's sleep
and a warm shower," said Greg
Hogan of the Kingsland Fire
Department. "We are here as
volunteers; most of the fire-
fighters who come here are
off duty, and they bring their
reserve trucks with them, so
this doesn't take away from the
hometown's ability to respond
to local fires. It really feels

wonderful to have the state
and federal agencies as well
as the local residents backing
us up and providing what we
require to make our fight a
little easier."
