Stark Memorial Honors

Fallen Shipmates

From Staff
A ceremony of remembrance
will be held at Mayport's
Memorial Park Saturday, May
17th at 10:30 a.m. to honor the
Sailors who were killed aboard
the guided-missile frigate USS
Stark (FFG 31) 21 years ago.
On May 17, 1987, while on
patrol in the Arabian Gulf, 37
Sailors died when two Iraqi mis-
siles struck USS Stark. Despite
the severe damage inflicted,
the heroic efforts of Stark's

crew saved the ship. Stark was
decommissioned at Mayport
in 1999. In order to preserve
the tradition once the ship was
retired, the Naval Order of the
United States, North Florida
Commandery, assumed sponsor-
ship for the memorial service.
Several members of the 1987
crew of Stark will attend the
service. The service will fea-
ture accounts of some of the
events that occurred following
the attack, both aboard ship and

here in Mayport, from crew and
volunteers & staff who worked
to provide information and sup-
port services to the families of
crew members.
The guest speaker for this
year's ceremony is Admiral
Harry Ulrich, USN (Ret.), a
former Commanding Officer of
Stark.
Mayport's Memorial Park
was established Aug. 1, 1987,
with the dedication of the Stark
monument.

ceremony on May 5 on the
ship's flight deck.
The ceremony began with a
presentation of the colors fol-
lowed by a speech given by
the ship's sponsor Nancy
Roosevelt Ireland, the grand-
daughter of Franklin and
Eleanor Roosevelt. Ireland trav-
eled from Connecticut to par-
ticipate in the ceremony. Her
comments focused on the ship's
connection to her grandparents.
She told personal stories of her
grandfather's love and apprecia-

tion of the sea and praised the
Roosevelt crew for a job well
done, thanking them for their
service to our nation. Ireland
encouraged Roosevelt Sailors
to visit the Franklin and Eleanor
Roosevelt Institute in Hyde
Park, New York during Fleet
Week '09 to learn more about
their ship's namesake.
Capt. John Kersh,
Commodore of Destroyer
Squadron 24, introduced
Carter with a brief overview
of Roosevelt's accomplish-
ments during the past eighteen
months. These include: CNO
Safety Award, SECNAV Safety
Award, the Golden Anchor
Award, and all of the warfare
efficiency awards of the 2007
cycle including the Green "H."

Carter spoke of Roosevelt's
accomplishments and his appre-
ciation of the crew. Carter
concluded his remarks and his
command tour by meritoriously
advancing Gas Turbine System
Technnician Mechanical 3rd

Naval Station Mayport beach-
es are a great place to live and
visit for both people and endan-
gered species of sea turtles.
It is just a little tougher to find
a good place to "nest" if you are
an endangered sea turtle.
Turtle nesting takes May 31
through Oct. 31. However,
their safety depends on you.
Hatchlings find their way to
the sea by light clues, such as
brightness. They instinctive-
ly crawl towards the brightest
light and become disoriented if
artificial lights are shining from
behind.
Artificial light from beach-
front homes, streetlights or even
flashlights can attract the hatch-
lings away from the safety of
the water and lead them to their
deaths.
Lights and people disorientate
female turtles coming ashore to
nest. If one is sighted coming
ashore, contact the base Wildlife
officer and remain clear, stay
quiet, do not use a light source
and don't allow anyone near her
to disturb her nesting.
How can you help? By sim-
ply keeping our beaches as dark
and quiet as possible throughout

the nesting period. Consider the
following suggestions:
*Turn off all unnecessary
lights and do not use flashlights
without a red lenses.
*Reposition the source of any
light fixture so it is not visible
from the beach.
*Use motion detectors on out-
side lights for security purposes.
*Place timers on lights so they
are off by 10 p.m.
*Close all Navy Lodge, BOQ
and house curtains at sunset that
face the beach.
And Remember
*All special functions con-
ducted on Naval Station
Mayport beach areas during
nesting season must be cleared
through the Wildlife officer
first.
*Restrict leaving large holes
and rutting on the beach area.
*All dogs on the beach must
be on a leash at all times.
*Never touch a nesting
female or emerging hatchlings.
These actions are a violation of
federal and state laws. Only
permit holders are allowed to
tourch or move a sea turtle.

Peruvian Sub Visits Mayport To Build Relations

By MC3 Alan Gragg
U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command
Public,;-
Buque Armada Peruana
(BAP) (Peruvian Navy) sub-
marine Arica (SS-36) made
a port visit to Naval Station
Mayport May 6 through May
9 to extend Peru's focus on
partner nation interaction.
Shortly after the sub arrived in
Mayport, USS Vicksburg (CG
69) officers hosted an icebreak-
er with Arica's officers, kicking
off the long list of relationship-
building events between the
U.S. and Peruvian navies while
Arica is in port. Promoting
regional maritime partner rela-
tions is a mission of U.S. Naval
Forces Southern Command
(NAVSO).
"Visits such as this one with
Arica, are perfect examples of
how we're building strong part-
nerships in this region," said
NAVSO Commander Rear Adm.
James W. Stevenson Jr. "Arica's
port visit here in Mayport gives
us an opportunity to continue
to expand interoperability and

strengthen relationships with
one of our closest regional part-
ners, the Peruvian Navy."
While in port, Arica's crew
also had an opportunity to rest
and to use the various Morale,
Welfare and Recreation (MWR)
outlets and medical facilities on
the base.
"I'm excited to be here in the
United States," said Peruvian
Chief Torpedoman Joaquin
Castillo. "It is my first time
here, and it's a great experi-
ence see the base and have the
opportunity to work with the
U.S. Ships and aircraft."
The sub is no stranger to
working with the United States
and other regional nations. In
2007, Arica participated in
UNITAS 48-07 Pacific Phase.
UNITAS, Latin for "unity," is
an annual multinational exer-
cise held since 1959. UNITAS
is designed to enhance interop-
erability between participat-
ing navies through cultural
exchanges, and military-to-mili-
tary training scenarios.
"To exercise interoperability

between countries, you have to
do it at sea, and that's what we
did last year (during UNITAS)"
said Arica's Commanding
Officer Peruvian Cmdr. Percy
Perez. "I think we have already
developed a very close tie with
the United States Navy, and we
look forward to working with
U.S. units in the future. We
appreciate all the support from
Mayport, and feel very comfort-
able here."
BAP Arica is part of the
Diesel Electric Submarine
Initiative (DESI). The DESI
program coordinates train-
ing between the United States
and foreign navies, focusing
on anti-submarine warfare.
DESI is a U.S. Fleet Forces
Command (USFF) program
with Commander, Submarine
Force (CSF) acting as the pro-
gram's Executive Agent. Diesel
electric submarines' ability to
run virtually silent presents a
detection challenge to ships and
aircraft. These subs are only

CO Column

A belated Mother's Day to
all who read this and to my
mom in Tennessee. I really
noticed a huge Mother's Day
response everywhere we went
this year from Mayport's main
gate, to the NEX, to the local
restaurants, etc.
Military service and the
honor, courage, and commit-
ment it takes to wear the uni-
form will be recognized this
weekend, (Saturday, May
17) during the 5th Annual USO
Military & Family Appreciation
Day at the Sea Otter Pavilion.
This year promises to be big-
ger than ever with live entertain-
ment, free food and drinks, and
plenty of games and interactive
obstacle courses for everyone.
We will also feature a separate
area for toddlers. Please come
on out and let our USO show
you their appreciation for your
service and support of our great
country. For more information,
call 246-3481.
On the same day of the cel-
ebration, a ceremony of remem-
brance will be held at Mayport's
Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m.
to honor the Sailors who were
killed aboard the guided-missile
frigate USS Stark (FFG 31) 21

years ago. On May 17, 1987,
while on patrol in the Arabian
Gulf, 37 Sailors died when two
Iraqi missiles struck the USS

age inflicted, the heroic efforts
of Stark's crew saved the ship.
Stark was decommissioned at
Mayport in 1999.
In order to preserve the
tradition once the ship was
retired, the Naval Order of the
United States, North Florida
Commandery, assumed spon-
sorship for the memorial ser-
vice. Several members of the
1987 crew of Stark will attend

the service. The service will
feature accounts of some of the
events that occurred follow-
ing the attack, both aboard the
ship and here in Mayport, from
crew and volunteers & staff
who worked to provide infor-
mation and support services to
the families of crew members.
The guest speaker for this year's
ceremony is retired Adm. Harry
Ulrich, a former Commanding
Officer of Stark.
We are changing procedures
at the Commissary as far as
entry and use of the facility.
You will notice that IDs will
now be checked coming into
the facility.
This is a great initiative to
ensure the safety of all of the
patrons and also keeping
the savings to only to those
who deserve them. Speaking of
shopping, you need to stop by
the Ameristore and check out
the new gas pumps. I frequent-
ly get asked on the price of gas
and how it is determined.
Here is NEX gas prices 101:
We pay the exact same fed-
eral and state taxes as gas sta-
tions outside the gate. We have
smaller tanks than most stations
since ours are above ground.

What that means to you is that
in times of increasing gas pric-
es, we will be higher than sur-
rounding areas since we paid
the most recent price. In times
of declining prices, we will be
lower. In times of stable prices,
we will always be lower.
Safety, as you well know,
is something that is at the top
of my priority list and it needs
to be for all hands. Our Safety
Department is committed to
seeing that we are all up to
speed on our qualifications.
Please take a round turn on your
ESAMS training and depart-
mental MAP inspections. As
always, the safety team is stand-
ing by to help.
The Atlantic hurricane sea-
son begins on June 1 and ends
Nov. 30. No matter what the
seasonal outlook states, whether
it calls for an above-average,
average, or below-average sea-
son, it should not change your
preparation plans.
The only number that matters
is the storm that may strike you
this season. The time to make
a hurricane plan is now, before
the storm strikes. Also, don't
forget the usual pattern of after-
noon thunderstorms will also

begin soon and often brings
dangers of high winds and light-
ning strikes. This weather can
be just as intense as a hurricane,
but of much shorter duration
and with little, if any advanced
warning.
There will be more to fol-
low in The Mirror as we get
closer. Complete information
concerning hurricane prepara-
tion is located on the National
Hurricane Center website at
http://www.hurricanes.gov.
Stuff closer to home: I signed
the new traffic instruction this
past week. I hope you will
agree with me that it was long
needed to make this base safer
for all of us.
The Thrift Shop is now at a
new location and it is finally
on equal looks as the service
it provides. The Vet clinic is
just about ready to move across
the street from the thrift store
in a much cleaner and up to
date facility and it backs up to
our Military Working Dog facil-
ity.
Volunteerism is something
I highly encourage, and there
are many organizations looking
for volunteers in The Mirror's
"Reaching Out" section. This is

a great way to foster community
spirit. The "Reaching Out" sec-
tion is updated weekly, so get
out there and make a difference
in the community!
I'm continually impressed
with the number of people out
in town that stop me at meet-
ings and tell me a story about
someone from this base helping
out in town.
Before I close I want to thank
the superb job our folks at base
services continue to do every
day. The base looks sharp and
lets keep it that way. Picking
up a piece of trash takes only a
second, and makes a big differ-
ence.
Please be safe on and off
base, and keep those great sug-
gestions coming in at aaron.
bowman@navy.mil or the CO's
suggestion box located at the
base galley.
For you folks enjoying fish-
ing down at Charlie Pier, it
wouldn't be open unless you
had raised the issue. Thanks for
taking the time to suggest ways
of making this a better base.

CREDO Corner

IL

By Cmdr.
Jon C. Fredrickson
Director, Spiritual Fitness Center
Southeast CREDO
There is a huge difference
between spirituality and reli-
giosity. Webster's Dictionary
defines religiosity as "a specif-
ic unified system of reverence
for a supernatural power." The
same dictionary defines spiritu-
ality as "that which is concerned
with or affecting the soul."
It all comes down to what
direction a person is looking. It
is an error when a person states,

"I am not a religious or spiri-
tual person." Everyone is reli-
gious and everyone has a type
of spirituality. Religious sim-
ply means that a person has a
belief system. Even the atheist
is religious, because an athe-
ist believes in their unbelief.
Spirituality is all about under-
standing one's relationship to
their belief system, and it is the
hard part of the equation-but
then "relating" to anything or
anybody is always the hard part
of figuring something out.
A few years back, the official

some new kind of Navy gym-

the focus of what we do in our

for spiritual growth and a closer

be he brightest light in the uni-
verse, but it is a dim imitation of
the sun. Christian scripture puts
it this way: No%% we see in a
mirror dimly, then we shall see
face to face. Now we know in
part, but one day we shall know
in full." It is easy, maybe too
easy, to adopt a religious belief
system. It is a life long hard
work to understand and practice
a life giving spirituality.
Our quest to understand our
own spirituality needs always to
be restless. Not in the sense of
frustration and a denial of seren-

ity, but in the sense of under-
standing that our God is so great
that the security and joy we find
in seeking God has no end. Not
because we are so small, but
because God is so great. I read
someplace once that the light
of stars we see in the night sky
is light that started our direc-
tion from 400,000 light years
away. All of that distance is like
a marble in the hand of God.
So, we may think, who am I to
think I can totally understand,
let alone fully relate to a God as
great as God?

If you would like to grow in
an understanding of your par-
ticular spirituality, or in any
other important and significant
relationship, please, give us a
call and sign up for a retreat.

As part of their Theater
Security Cooperation ',

(FFG 32) participated in a com-
munity relations (COMREL)
project at The Home for Social
and Medical Care for Children .
in Varna, Bulgaria on May 2-3.
The home is a place for chil-
dren 10 weeks to 3 years who
have been abandoned or whose
parents cannot afford to care for
them properly. The crew pulled
weeds, did edging, and painted
a safety railing at the home.
The two days at the center
working and bonding with the
children made a lasting impres-
sion on not only the children but
also the crew. The project was .... .
well received and USS John L. .

Phil Sea Celebrates

Women's
By Ensign Patrick Shelton
USS Philippine Sea PAO
Sailors onboard USS
Philippine Sea (CG-58) gath-
ered together to celebrate
Women's History Month with a
discussion and movie night.
More than 20 Sailors congre-
gated on the mess decks to par-
ticipate in the event. The dis-
cussion revolved around women
in the military, and the partici-
pants shared their experiences
and interactions with military
women who had profoundly
affected their lives.
"During the 'Speak Out' we
talked about being women in
the military and the military
women who have really inspired
us," said Philippine Sea First
Lieutenant, Ensign Brittany
Kaluscak. "Most of the women
could talk about an individual
who had motivated them to suc-
ceed and it allowed us to see
that we can really make a dif-
ference in other women's lives
and careers.
After the discussion, the
group watched The Messenger,

History
a movie about the experiences
of Joan of Arc.
"The movie depicts a woman
in a leadership role in a male
dominated society. It is about
empowering women, and I
think that it was very relevant to
our discussion of the contribu-
tions of women in the military
and our celebration of Women's
History Month," said Ship
Serviceman 1st Class Aaron
Johnson.
The event was the culmina-
tion of a series of events that
the Command Assessment Team
sponsored to heighten aware-
ness of the contributions of
women in the military.
"It was very informative and
successful," said Yoeman 1st
Class Gracie Hudson. "I think
it was the first time that we have
highlighted Women's History
Month. Together we discovered
a lot about the contributions
of women in the military and
onboard Philippine Sea."

New 'Concept' In Fitness

From MWR
MWR Fitness has started a new class on
Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Gym to fire up the
bum with the rower Concept 2.
The class is held in Racquetball Court 3. Space
is limited to 10 students.
The full body rhythmic nature of the rower
makes it extremely efficient at burning unwanted
calories with minimal stress to your legs, feet
or joints. The low impact nature of the rowing
makes it an ideal way to rebuild muscle tone and
muscular endurance, while increasing flexibility
and range of motion.
The physical benefits of rowing are a natural
complement to many sports activities to include
running, racquet sports, cycling, basketball, foot-
ball or virtually any other activity, making it an
outstanding way to add diversity to your routine,
during the season and during the off-season.
Whether you are 8 to 80, blind, crippled or
crazy, rowing offers awesome aerobic and muscu-
lar endurance benefits to any program of fitness.
It is rare to find an activity to work as many
muscle groups, through as wide range of motion
as does rowing. Musculature of the knees hips,
arms and shoulders all see a high degree of rota-
tion and usage in every stroke, even more so than
in many cardio machines. This unique action
makes rowing an efficient and effective calorie
burning, while also developing flexibility and
muscular endurance. Rowing is impact free and
the activity is completely controlled by the user.
Many believe it to be the best low-impact cardio
machine available.
Each rowing stroke allows for full compres-
sion and extension of the legs, toning the hips,
buttocks, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, and
musculature of the feet. Because it is low impact,
rowing is more beneficial for your knees, joints,
spine and other weight bearing musculature.
Rowing is one of the few, cardiovascular

machines that causes the musculature of the
abdominal and lower back to work in a way that
develops and firms. Health and fitness experts
alike know the importance of developing this
group of muscles.
Rowing increase the muscular endurance and
tone of the back, upper back, shoulders and arms.
Because it engages so many muscle groups

Holidays At Sea

By Ensign Laura Anderson
USS Vicksburg
No visitor has ever had a
problem finding the ship's store
on board USS Vicksburg, thanks
to its eye-catching window dis-
plays.
For every holiday, big or
small, crewmembers have
come to expect decorations
throughout the ship's store
and in the surrounding areas.
Ship's Serviceman Third Class
Christopher Byrnes enjoys cre-
ating a festive display for his
fellow shipmates, saying that it
brightens the store and makes
the hectic ship environment a
little more like home.
Vicksburg's crew missed
Halloween, Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and New Year's
during its recent 2007-2008
Deployment.
"It can be hard for sailors
to be away from their families
during the holidays, especially
with the added pressures that
come with being on a deployed
cruiser," says Byrnes, "I just try
to do what I can to make life a
little easier."
Thanks to Byrnes's enticing
displays and pleasant demeanor,
the ship's store enjoyed great
success during cruise.
Because of this success,
the store was able to give
almost $20,000 to MWR
while deployed, which great-

USS Samuel B. Roberts PAO
During the month of April,
the Samuel B. Roberts had
the honor of being home for
three Naval reservists who
were completing their annual
reservists' training commit-
ment. Boatswain's Mate 1Pt
Class (SW) McManus, Damage
Controlman 2nd Class (SW)
Drew, and Machinist's Mate 3rd
Class Crymer spent two weeks
onboard, immersing themselves
in shipboard life and quickly
becoming busy as they grew
accustomed to the fast paced
and high energy lifestyle of
the Sammy B. In addition to

Roosevelt
Pentagon, serving as the Action
Officer in the Joint Operations
Directorate European Division.
His most recent operational
assignment was Commanding
Officer of the mine counter-
measure ship USS Guardian
(MCM-5) forward deployed

their duties, Crymer, a reserv-
ist from Augusta, Georgia, got
the opportunity to personally
qualify as a sharpshooter on the
9mm!
In Sammy B. tradition,
Commanding Officer, Cmdr.
Wally Lovely presented ball
caps to the three reservists after
two weeks, who, like every
other new member onboard,
proved that they were aware of
what a privilege it was to be a
Sailor in Sammy B. by demon-
strating knowledge and under-
standing about the ship's his-
tory.
This tradition, which has
been ongoing for the past

from Sasebo, Japan.
Previously he served on board
USS Reuben James (FFG-57)
and USS Philippine Sea (CG-
58).

year, provides Sailors with the
opportunity to learn about the
ship's namesake and Samuel
B. Roberts' contributions to the
Navy, past ships bearing the
Sammy B. name, and important
events throughout the history of
all three ships.
Sammy B. is proud to have
the honor of being "home" for
the three reservists fulfilling
their Naval service commitment
and extend the legacy and fam-
ily of the Sammy B a little bit
further.

HSL-46 Detachment 5 Enter Fifth Fleet

By Lt.j.g. Greg Sivers
HSL-46 Detachment Five
The Spartans of HSL-46
Detachment Five recently
departed the Sixth Fleet Area
of Responsibility (AOR) and
are currently operating in Fifth
Fleet.
The Spartans left Mayport for
their scheduled deployment in
February aboard USS Philippine
Sea (CG 58). Philippine Sea
joined other ships of the Nassau
Expeditionary Strike Group for
their trip across the Atlantic
Ocean.
The Spartans completed sev-
eral requirements to improve
readiness during the trans-
Atlantic voyage, including
helicopter in-flight refueling
(HIFR) and various deck land-
ing qualifications.
The detachment was also
called upon to conduct a medi-
cal evacuation (MEDEVAC) of
a Philippine Sea Sailor to USS
Nassau.
The Sailor, who ultimately
required surgery, was provided
medical care during the flight
by Aviation Warfare Systems
Operator 2nd Class John Fawcett.
Additionally, the Spartans sup-
ported a vertical replenishment
(VERTREP) of several pallets
of food and supplies to USS

Management, FFSC
What does anger do for you?
Communicate for you? Keep
people at a safe distance from
you? Keep you in charge? For
many people, anger serves them
many uses, but all too often,
it is at a high cost...usually of
relationships, unhappiness in
the workplace, and a general
feeling of disdain. If you want
to be able to break out of the
"get angry/get even" syndrome,
come to this class.

Mediterranean Sea. The
detachment also enjoyed port
calls in Souda Bay, Crete and
Haifa, Israel. While in Israel,
several Sailors took advantage
of MWR tours to Jerusalem,
various holy sites, and the Dead
Sea. The visit to Israel was
especially unique because it
took place over the Easter holi-
day weekend.
The detachment has had
several members recognized
for exceptional performance.

Children who witness fam-
ily violence are often forgot-
ten as the unintended victims.
A wide range of child adjust-
ment problems has been found

to be associated with exposure
to domestic violence. Parent's
need to see and understand the
effects of domestic violence
on children as encompassing
behavior, emotion, development
and socialization. Parents need
to understand that there is an
intergenerational cycle of vio-
lence and they may be creat-
ing a legacy for their child of
learned violent behavior. The
purpose of this program is not
to shame parents for events

that have already happen, but
to instill hope that things can
change. The knowledge that the
violence, which many parents
incorrectly believe is unseen
by their children, is negative-
ly impacting their children's
growth and development and
may provide an additional moti-
vator for ending the violence
and seeking intervention.

REAL COMMITMENT. REAL ADVANTAGE.

650,620

Hours

Besides protecting our country, military

personnel stationed in our communities

donated 650,620 hours of volunteer

service in Northeast Florida and

Southeast Georgia last year. Their time

was given to community organizations,

church groups, youth activities, scouting

and more.
