Farrag

By Ensign Jillian Danback
USS Farragut
Dozens of friends and fam-
ily members lined Charlie
Pier Monday morning as USS
Farragut (DDG-99) left NS
Mayport's basin for its maiden
deployment in support of the
Partnership of the Americas and
the George Washington Strike
Group.
As Farragut's Commanding
Officer, Cmdr. Scott Dugan has
the honor of leading this ship
through its first deployment.
"Deploying is a significant
event in any service member's
career, but there is a significant
amount of pride associated with
being the first crew to deploy
a ship," Dugan said. "A suc-
cessful deployment will be an
excellent opportunity to set the
tone for Farragut's long career."
Farragut will have escort duty
for USS George Washington
(CVN-73) to its new homeport
in Yokosuka, Japan. Due to the
immensity of the aircraft carrier,
George Washington is unable
to transit through the Panama
Canal, necessitating a transit
around the entirety of South
America.
The last carrier to embark
upon this course for a homeport
transition was the USS Ronald
Reagan (CVN-76), which
maneuvered from its construc-
tion site in Newport News, Va.,
to its new home in San Diego,
Calif., an endeavor conducted

ut On Maiden Deployment

from May to August 2004.
During an earlier visit on
board Farragut, Rear Adm.
Phillip Cullom, Commander
Strike Forces Group Eight, com-
mented on this deployment's
distinctiveness.
"UNITAS operations are fre-
quent, yet a carrier only changes
its homeport every four years or
so. It is rare when these events
coincide."
Consequently, the work up
cycle for such an illustrious and
varied deployment was incred-
ibly involved.
During Group Sail with the
George Washington Carrier
Strike Group, Farragut engaged
in air defense exercises in
preparation to become the Air
Defense Coordinator (ADC) for
the entire Strike Group.
"The role of the primary Air
Defense Commander for an
entire Carrier Strike Group is
not a role usually delegated to
AEGIS destroyers," accord-
ing to assistant Air Defense
Coordinator, Senior Chief
Fire Controlman Jason Brock.
"Due to their larger crew size
and greater defensive capabili-
ties, this distinction is normally
reserved for the cruiser Navy.
Farragut was chosen to fill that
role despite these limitations."
Farragut's air defense team
will be actively engaged in man-
aging all air contacts through
the entirety of its transit with
Washington.

Similarly, the Partnership of
the America's mission pres-
ents its own unique challeng-
es. Numerous Community
Relations (COMREL) projects
will take place during Farragut
port visits, involving a high
level of operational support and
management.
Additionally, exercises will
be conducted with the Brazilian,
Argentine, Chilean, Peruvian,
and Panamanian Navies, not
only to demonstrate U.S. naval
prowess, but to embrace these
nations as partners in the Global
War on Terrorism and the con-
tinuing War on Drugs.
After Farragut detaches from
escorting Washington and their
Partnership of the America's
tasking, Farragut will engage
in counter-narcotic operations
in support of Theater Security
Cooperation (TSC) 2008 mis-
sion.
Maritime Interdiction
Operations (MIO) scenarios
were conducted during Group
Sail in preparation for the types
of situations Farragut's Vertical
Boarding Search and Seizure
(VBSS) will encounter during
TSC.
Training during Group Sail
consisted of everything from
simple approach operations,
compliant boardings in support
of expanded MIO, and tensely
escalated non-compliant board-
ings. What sets VBSS opera-

F leet Talk

By FORCM(SS/AW/SW)
Charles Dassance
Naval Network Warfare Command
Good day, shipmates. This
week, I'd like to talk with you
about a topic that many Sailors
unfortunately take for granted
- the need for everyone, from
the highest ranking officers to
the newest seaman recruits, to
always present a professional,
squared away appearance when
they come to work each day. In
many ways, your appearance is
just as important as the quality
of the work that you do.
What is the first thing that
you notice whenever you see
another Sailor walking around?
Do you look at her uniform to
see if it is clean, pressed and
has sharp creases? Do you
notice whether or not he has
shaved or has a proper haircut?
If so, then you are doing your
job of watching out for your
shipmates. And what is the first
thought that comes to your mind

FORCM Charles Dassance
if you see a fellow Sailor who
has a sloppy, careless appear-
ance? You probably think that,
just as he doesn't care too much
about how he looks at work
each day, he is probably equally
lackadaisical about the job he
does.
This is why it is important
for you to take the time every
day before you come to work
to properly prepare every part
of your uniform. Whether you

are wearing utilities or work-
ing blues or whites, make sure
you iron your shirt and pants or
skirt thoroughly and put sharp
creases into them. Also, you
should always keep on hand a
clean and pressed pair of dress
blues or whites in case you need
to wear them.
Your shoes should always
be freshly polished and, if you
are male, shave every morning
unless a waiver is authorized
by the commanding officer.
Mustaches are authorized but
shall be kept neatly and close-
ly trimmed. No portion of the
mustache shall extend below the
lip line of the upper lip.
Both male and female Sailors
must also ensure that their hair-
cuts conform to Navy standards.
For men, hair above the ears and
around the neck shall be tapered
from the lower natural hairline
upwards at least three-fourths of
an inch and outward not great-
er than three-fourths of inch to

blend with your hairstyle. Hair
on the back of the neck must
not touch the collar. Hair shall
be no longer than four inches
and may not touch the ears or
collar, extend below eyebrows
when headgear is removed and
not show under front edge of
headgear or interfere with you
properly wearing military head-
gear. The bulk of the hair shall
not exceed two inches in length.
For women, hairstyles shall
not be outrageously multi-
colored or faddish, to include
shaved portions of the scalp
(other than the neckline) or have
designs cut or braided into the
hair. Hair coloring must look
natural and complement the
individual. Haircuts and styles
shall present a balanced appear-
ance. Lopsided and extreme-
ly asymmetrical styles are not
authorized. Ponytails, pigtails,
widely spaced individual hang-
ing locks and braids which
protrude from the head are not

authorized. Multiple braids are
authorized.
These are the basic steps you
should follow to present a pro-
fessional appearance at work
each day. However, the need
to look sharp doesn't end when
you're off duty. You must
remember that although you
don't have to work 24 hours a
day, you are still a part of the
military during your off-duty
hours. This means that you
must also dress and look profes-
sionally when you are on lib-
erty.
For men, earrings are prohib-
ited when you are in civilian
clothes in a duty status, just as
they are prohibited while you
are in uniform. For both men
and women, tattoos, body art
and brands on the head, face,
neck or scalp are banned.
Individual tattoos, body art
and brands exposed by wear-
ing a short sleeve uniform shirt
shall be no larger in size than

the wearer's hand with fingers
extended and joined with the
thumb touching the base of
the index finger. Follow all
of these instructions, and you
should look professional while
on liberty.
Being a Sailor carries with
it a responsibility to reflect
positively on the Navy and the
nation you represent. This is
something you shouldn't for-
sake just because you are not in
uniform. In the civilian world,
it will matter just as much how
you look wearing a suit and tie
as how you now look wearing
your Navy uniform. In both
cases, care and attention to
detail are what will allow you
to always look your best. And
if you look your best everyday,
then you will have the confi-
dence to perform at your best,
and others will have confidence
in you. Until next time, have a
good day, shipmates.

By Cmdr.
Jon C. Fredrickson
Director, Spiritual Center Southeast
Ben Franklin said, "None
preaches better than the ant.
And she says nothing."
Oh how we all love to sound
off! How we love to preach!
Even thought we hated being
preached at and may have made
solemn vows never to preach
when we got older. Now that
we are older, we may find a pul-
pit everywhere we go. And why
not? There is so much wrong
with the world, our neighbor,
the Navy, our chain of com-
mand and anything else we
could think of.
It is not as though we think
that we are that much smarter
than everyone else, or that the
world should be run exactly the
way we think or want. It is just
that often times we believe we
see something that no one else
sees, and the real problem is
that when we point out the flaw
in someone else's design plans,
no one listens.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if
all of us were heard-if others
actually just took the time to
really listen to what we were

saying? Most of us probably
wouldn't mind all that much if
someone totally disagreed with
us. It just that most of us don't
think we are listened to. If you
are like me, feeling like you are
being blown off is one of the
worst feelings in the world.
But the best preaching has
always been by example. The
most powerful messages spring
from we are not what we say.
The most effective tool we have
to make others "see the light"
is to see the light more clearly
ourselves.
Far better than to complain
about never being thought about
is to show others how wonder-
ful such consideration is by giv-
ing them the gift of kindness.
Better than preaching about a
negative attitude is to light up
our world with our own positive
frame of mind. Better than to
shout against intolerance is to
display a live-and-let-live atti-
tude ourselves.
I know that all of this is easier
said than done, but it all flows
from having an insightful and
exact knowledge of ourselves,
and as they say, "that doesn't
come cheap."

It is hard work to really know
ourselves-a view of who we
are apart from what we do, who
we are with or what we have. It
is hard work to bite our tongue
and look first inside ourselves
before we lash out at someone
else's shortcomings.

Happy Birthday Chiefs!

The Sikorsky staff at HSL-40 are presented Letters of Commendation from Squadron Commanding
Officer, Cmdr Barry Taylor after they helped control an engine fire on an SH60B helicopter while
aiding the aircrew's exit.

NS Mayport chief petty officers stand information during the morning flag raising ceremony on
April 1 in honor of the CPO's 115th birthday.

Action
By Capt. Mark Baillie
HSL-40
"His quick thinking and
actions saved not only an air-
craft, but quite possibly, the
lives of the aircrew involved."
These are the words used to
describe the actions of five of
HSL-40's Sikorsky Support
Services Line Division per-
sonnel in the Letter of
Commendation presented to
each of them during quarters in
March by Commanding Officer,
Cmdr. Barry "Bear" Taylor.
On Jan. 17, Instructor Pilot
Lt. Nate Moore and student
pilot Lt.j.g. William Welsh were
starting the engines of aircraft
401 for its second flight of the
day when they noticed a fire
warning light in the cockpit.
Outside, the Plane Captain,
Christian Garcia, was giving
them the visual signal that their
aircraft was on fire.
Welsh noticed, "... sparks
from the right side of the air-
craft move right to left in front
of the windscreen."
The perspective of those out-
side the aircraft, the Sikorsky
personnel, was much differ-
ent as they had a clear view of
the right side of the aircraft.

Saves
Gregory Maxwell was standing
fire-watch.
"I started to walk away when
I heard a loud popping sound,"
Maxwell recounted. "I turned to
see sparks and then flames com-
ing from the number 2 engine."
The pilots quickly followed
the procedures for an engine
fire and shutdown both engines.
As they brought the main rotor
to a stop, they discharged the
onboard fire-extinguishing
agent into the number 2 engine
compartment. Due to the sever-
ity of the fire, however, further
assistance was required from
Sikorsky personnel to contain
the fire and ensure the safe
egress of the aircrew.
According to the Safety
Observer, Jerry Chiles,
"Immediately, the fire started to
engulf the entire starboard side
of the aircraft with the flames
spreading toward the belly of
the aircraft .... In my 27 years of
naval aviation I have never seen
a helicopter fire this big."
Once the aircrew brought
the main rotor to a stop,
Mike Cartica and Nedinardo
Tua, a Plane Captain trainee,
approached the nose of the air-
craft to aid in the safe egress

Lives
of the aircrew. At the same
time Jerry Chiles and Gregory
Maxwell succeeded in eliminat-
ing the fire on the starboard side
of the aircraft.
For their actions that day
Plane Captain Christian Garcia,
Fire Bottle Operator/Chock
Runner Gregory Maxwell,
Safety observer Jerry Chiles
and Trainee's Mike Cartica
and Nedinardo Tua were each
presented with a Letter of
Commendation that conclud-
ed with the remarks that his
"exceptional professionalism,
initiative, and loyal devotion to
duty reflected credit upon him-
self and were in keeping with
the highest traditions of the
United States Naval Service."

USS Doyle Hosts British Submarine Talent Visit

By Ensign Jason Bilbro
USS Doyle PAO
USS Doyle (FFG 39) was
recently visited by HMS Talent
(S92), a British nuclear-pow-
ered submarine during its brief
stop to Naval Station Mayport
on its world-wide deployment.
Commissioned in 1990, HMS
Talent is the sixth of seven
Trafalgar-class hunter-killer
submarines employed by the
British Royal Navy.
Talent stands 85.4 meters
long and displaces 5,200 tons
while submerged. The sub car-
ries a complement of 130 crew.
Talent's armament includes five
tubes, which can be utilized to
fire the "Spearfish" torpedoes,
as well as Tomahawk mis-

siles. Talent recently finished
an extended overhaul period,
prior to setting sail on its cur-
rent deployment.
Cmdr. C. D. Lightfoot, com-
manding officer of HMS Talent,
and his crew, hosted a recep-
tion on board the submarine
the evening of March 22 after
visiting Doyle earlier that day.
NS Mayport Commanding
Officer, Capt. Aaron Bowman,
NS Mayport Executive Officer,
Cmdr. Michael Watson, mem-
bers of the Navy League, as
well as various commanding
officers and other distinguished
guests were in attendance.
Watson said that he thorough-
ly enjoyed the event.
"The officers and crew of

HMS Talent hosted a unique
reception onboard the subma-
rine, a personal first for the
CO and I in both our careers,"
Watson explained. "It was a
tight fit with 20 guests, includ-
ing wives and dates. The
reception was essentially
held 'throughout the subma-
rine' ranging from the control
room, to the CPO Mess and
Wardroom."
"Everyone had a great time
passing trays of hors d'oeuvres
and refreshments among each
other," Watson added. "The
British were great hosts and
very proud of their submarine
and throughout the event even
offered tours which allowed the
party to thin out a bit!"

Tuesday afternoon, members
of USS Doyle's soccer team,
The Mariners, hit the field for
a game of "football" with the
submariners of Talent. The
Mariners held the lead early,
but Talent surged in the closing
minutes of the game to come
out on top 10-8.
Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class
(SW) Jeffery Ronchaquira was
Doyle's goalie for the match.
"It was definitely an interest-
ing game," noted Ronchaquira.
"We played on a small field,
where they usually only play
five players per side, with a
goalie. In order to get more
people in the game, we played
eight per side, which added a
different dynamic, and made

the game faster paced. It was a
good time, with lots of interac-
tion between the teams."
Later in that evening, Doyle
took its turn hosting a reception
for Talent at the Ocean Breeze
Conference Center.
On Thursday and Friday,
Doyle Sailors were treated to
guided tours of HMS Talent.
"The sub was pretty interest-
ing," remarked Ensign Joshua
Oates. "However, it was a bit
cramped, for a guy of 6'3."
Overall, Talent Sailors great-
ly enjoyed their brief stop in
Mayport, which not only gave
the ship a brief stop to complete
maintenance, but also gave the
crew some much needed down
time.

"The beach was awesome,
and the people are really nice,"
said ET (MESM) D. Weitz of
HMS Talent.
The crew stayed in hotels
at the beach during their stay,
and despite the unseasonably
cold weather for Florida, Talent
sailors enjoyed themselves
immensely.
"We only get a couple weeks
of this [good weather] every
year," said ET (MESM) A. C.
Lester of HMS Talent. "The
weather was great."
Talent set sail on March 30,
to continue their world-wide
deployment.

HSL-42 Detachment Is

First To Embark USS Nitze

By MC3 Christopher Hall
USS Theodore Roosevelt
Like a new neighbor moving
in next door, HSL-42 "Proud
Warriors" tried to make a good
impression with the Sailors
assigned to USS Nitze (DDG
94) when the helicopter detach-
ment first reported aboard
March 17. And by all accounts,
it appears that they were suc-
cessful.
HSL-42 is the first perma-
nently embarked air detachment
for the three-year-old Nitze.
According to Lt. Cmdr. Edward
O'Grady, officer in charge of
the HSL-42's detachment and
the ship's "Air Boss", the initial
integration into the ship's com-
pany was a concern.
"The general challenges are
that we take rooms, we take
spots on the mess line and space
all over the ship that once was
used for something else", he
said, noting the initial concerns
were swept away once they
began working as a team."
"We have been completely
impressed," he said. "Most of
this crew has no prior experi-
ence of handling air operations

and they still know exactly what
to do."
HSL-42, which fly the SH
60B Seahawk, provides Nitze
with capabilities such as air and
surface warfare missions, logis-
tical medical evacuations and
rescue operations.
"I think everyone onboard
understands what we bring to
the ship," said O'Grady. "The
crew's level of professionalism
on how to handle air opera-
tions has been outstanding. It
is amazing, their knowledge
and willingness to go above and
beyond has put our air crew at
ease."
"Everybody has confidence
in one another," said Aviation
Warfare Systems Operator (AW)
2nd Class Grayson Young,
a HSL-42 air crew member.
"These guys on the ship make
decisions on their own on how
to handle flight operations. The
air crew is not second guessing
them; that makes our jobs that
much easier."
"This integration has been
the smoothest and most seam-
less I have seen," said Nitze's
Executive Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Joe

Carrigan. "I just haven't seen it
like this and I keep telling the
department heads that I do not
think this is normal; it is usually
not this easy."
The crewmembers have
adjusted well to the sudden
increase of personnel and have
made strides in welcoming and
adapting to each other.
"I do not see much differ-
ence in lifestyle on my ship,"
said Seaman Michael Baham
of Nitze's Deck division. "I talk
to these guys like they have
always been onboard. They took
up a little space in the helicopter
hangars and that is pretty much
all I have noticed."
HSL-42 is based out of
Mayport, Fla. Every new envi-
ronment may bring many feel-
ings of uncertainty of the future,
but as long as every person
aboard a Navy vessel works as
a team, the lifestyle can be put
more at ease.

Halfway Point Finds Spirits High On USS Carney

Above, Competitors from the show await the judges' decision. Top right, Fire Controlman 2nd Class 'ingfiield shows off the plaque he
won in the Carney Idol competition. Bottom right, Ensign Shawna 1l c'i: and CDMCM Craig Holubar, two of the "celebrity" judges,
wave to the crowd.

By Ensign
Rebecca Lawrence
USS Carney PAO
One hundred and six days
into a seven-month deployment,
Sailors on board USS Carney
celebrated the halfway point at
sea.
It was a night full of entertain-
ment for the crew, featuring a
talent show competition appro-
priately named "Carney Idol"
and hosted by "Ryan Seacrust,"
followed by a Shoebox Auction
sponsored by the Carney Family
Readiness Group. The activities
raised both money and morale
for the crew and their families.
The "Carney Idol" talent
show featured eight acts, includ-
ing a martial arts exhibition,
a stand-up comedy routine, a
manual at arms demonstration,
and music by four of Carney's
most talented vocalists.
Even the captain, Cmdr.
Glenn Kuffel, participated in the
event, serenading the crew as he
strummed his guitar. At the end
of the competition, the coveted
first-ever title of "Carney Idol"
was awarded to Fire Controlman

Second Class Eric Wingfield for
his impersonation of more than
ten pop-culture personalities.
The evening's events con-
tinued with a Shoebox Auction
designed to raise money for
Carney's family readiness
group.
Family members across the
country donated more than forty
shoeboxes filled with games,
snacks, DVDs, sports parapher-
nalia, gourmet coffee, and other
comfort items from home.
Most of the boxes had themes
and were decorated to give pro-
spective bidders clues to the
contents. The auction, which
featured a Grand Shoebox con-
taining a digital camera and
printer, raised $5,000 for the
family readiness group.
And, of course, there was
cake and ice cream. Carney's
culinary specialists impressed
the crew when they presented
a cake that featured an edi-
ble model of a DDG cruising
through waves of icing towards
signs that read "Mayport,"
"Welcome Home," and "We
Missed You!"

Klakring JOs Get Look

Below The Waterline

From USS Klakring
The Junior Officers of USS
Klakring (FFG 42) were treated
to an in-depth tour and discus-
sion on FFG-7 Class underwa-
ter hull configuration.
As part of the weekly officer
training program, Klakring coor-
dinated with USS Halyburton
(FFG 40) to conduct a hands-
on training session, using the
Halyburton hull as their class-
room in the Graving Dock of
Atlantic Marine Shipyard. For
the first time, Klakring's new-
est complement of ensigns was
able to gain an appreciation for
the underbelly of an FFG.
The group, dressed in hard-
hats and goggles for safety,
were led around by Klakring's
Combat Systems Officer, Lt.
Cmdr. Larry D. Johnson, and
Chief Engineer, Lt. Chad 0.
Withrow. Both officers have
considerable time serving on
frigates, which allowed them to
pepper the dialogue with inter-
esting Frigate facts and histori-
cal lessons.
A calm wind and plenty of
sunshine greeted the group as
they were led from Halyburton's
stem to bow. Starting at the pro-
peller they discussed the func-
tion of controllable pitch, and
how it relates to both movement
of the propellers and maneuver-
ability of the ship.
"This field trip was a great
alternative to simply discussing
the hull via PowerPoint," com-
mented Johnson. "After finding
out how many officers on board
had not seen a frigate in dry
dock before, I knew we needed

Peter Goodman
Ensign Jean C. Tahhan provides
some perspective on the size
of an FFG hull after inspect-
ing one of USS Halyburton's
Sea Chests. The Sea Chests are
located along the length of the
hull and are used as sea water
intake valves to provide water
for the ship's cooling and fire-
fighting systems.

to get everyone out there."
The crew moved slowly for-
ward as their guides carefully
described each piece of machin-
ery above them, and the sys-
tems inside the ship with which
they were associated. Of special
interest to the ensigns were the
ship's two Auxiliary Propulsion
Units (APUs) under the ship's
bow, which give ship handlers
the ability to control the move-
ment of the bow and plays an
integral role in the impressive
maneuverability that frigates are
commonly known for.
Ensign Greg R. Hand, a lim-
ited duty officer serving as
Klakring's EMO has seen frig-

ates in dry dock before, but now
on board learning to be a ship
driver himself, he noted, "the
tour gave us a chance to see just
how large the propulsion plant
is. For maneuvering in restricted
waters (waters within two miles
of the coast), it's important to
know where exactly the propel-
ler and APU's are when operat-
ing in such shallow waters."
The ensigns walked away
with a much better understand-
ing of what all the sketches,
diagrams, and pictures they had
seen onboard truly depicted.
"We've been learning about
all these things in abstract, so
seeing the machinery itself for
once lent a whole new perspec-
tive on the size and function of
the ship's engineering plant,"
remarked Ensign James E.
Hough.
"I can visualize now, when I
order an ahead 2/3 bell, a hard
left rudder, or APU's to 240,
what's happening on the other
end of things," added Ensign
Peter F. Goodman.
Experiences like this are vital
to junior officer development
on Klakring, as the ship's cadre
of young officers seeks to gain
the knowledge needed not only
to qualify SWO, but to safely
and efficiently operate the ship
at sea and project naval com-
bat power around the globe.
Klakring's Wardroom would
like to thank Halyburton's crew
for serving as such gracious
hosts for this unique training
crucible.

Pictured from left, Klakring officers Lt.j.g.
David T Osburn, Ensign Scott B. Lee, and Lt.j.g.
Anthony W. Sisti take a break from the busy
workday to enjoy barbecue during the picnic.

Barbecue For Sh

Story/photos by
Ensign Peter Goodman
USS Klakring Public, -
The First Class Petty Officer
Association (FCPOA) of USS
Klakring (FFG 42) recently
hosted an afternoon of barbecue,
music, and sports at Kavenaugh
Park on Naval Station Mayport.
The event was held on Friday,
March 28, 2008, after a long
week of shipboard preparations
for forthcoming ULTRA S and
INSURV inspections.
Open to all Klakring Sailors,
the festivities gave them an
opportunity to socialize and
unwind in a new setting.

"We spend an awful lot
of time working side by side
on the ship" noted the ship's
Commanding Officer, Cmdr.
Ian R. Pollitt. "It's nice to get a
change of venue once in a while
and a fresh perspective."
As FCPOA President, Navy
Counselor 1st Class Jason R.
Rouse noted, "We thought it
would be good to break from
the norm and give our Sailors
the opportunity to socialize off
the ship. It had been a while
since the First Class Association
had done anything like this, so
we wanted to give everyone an
event they would enjoy."

ipmates
Between the burgers, hot-
dogs, soda, and sports, Klakring
Sailors were able to blow off
some steam as the crew pre-
pares for what promises to be an
extremely busy spring and sum-
mer. The afternoon's fun was
highlighted by the mixing skills
of the ship's DJ, Boatswain's
Mate 1st Class Timothy W.
Lumpkin, a longtime fixture at
Klakring events.
Members of FCPOA said they
were excited by the event, and
look forward to future opportu-
nities to serve the Klakring crew
while showcasing their leader-
ship and managerial skills.

USS John L. Hall (FFG 32)
pulled into Bar, Montenegro
from March 20-24 in support
of Theater Security Cooperation
(TSC).
The visit served to enhance
stability in the region by
strengthening maritime partner-
ships.
After a formal arrival cere-
mony was held for Montenegro
President Filip Vujanovic,
the president and his cabi-
net, the distinguished visitors
were given a tour of the ship
and joined the John L. Hall's
Wardroom for breakfast. Later
in the day, the Mayor of Bar,
Zarko Pavicevic and various
local civic and military leaders
joined the Wardroom for lunch.
That evening, a reception
on the flight deck was held for
more than 100 invited guests
including the U.S. Ambassador

to Montenegro, the Speaker of
Parliament, and the mayor.
"The visit was particu-
larly special in the wake of
Montenegro recently gaining
their independence and their
elections on the horizon," said
Cmdr. A.P. Bennett, USS John
L. Hall commanding officer.
USS John L. Hall partici-
pated in four separate com-
munity relations projects that
spanned the spectrum from
painting schools, planting olive
trees, speaking engagements to
a soccer game with municipal
employees. Additionally, the
ship's Damage Control Training
Team (DCTT) held training
seminars with Armed Forces of
Montenegro Navy personnel in
the use of various damage con-
trol and fire fighting systems.
The Visit, Board, Search and
Seizure (VBSS) team also held
seminars in basic tactical move-
ments and search procedures.

Project Handclasp supplies Apr.

American partner nations dur-
ing the ship's deployment for
Partnership of the Americas
(POA) 2008.
POA is an annual U.S.
Southern Command
(SOUTHCOM) operation
under the operational con-
trol of U.S. Naval Forces
Southern Command (NAVSO),
SOUTHCOM's Naval compo-
nent command. POA focuses
on interoperability and theater
security cooperation events, at
sea and on shore. U.S. maritime
forces work jointly with part-
ner nation governmental forces

throughout the Caribbean, and
Central and South America to
develop the relationships need-
ed to ensure maritime security
in the region.
Project Handclasp donations,
such as the pallets of toys and
medical and hygiene supplies
Farragut is carrying, are part of
POA 2008, promoting goodwill
in the region.
"Over the last several years,
Project Handclasp has become
a more prominent part of our
mission as we visit and work
with our partner nations," said
Cmdr. Lewis Preddy, NAVSO
Project Handclasp coordinator.
"Officers and Sailors onboard
deploying ships are loading up
with as much of the donated
material as they can carry,
knowing that during these vis-
its, they can help people who

Project Handclasp is a Navy
sponsored program which col-
lects and distributes a variety
on items donated by companies,
groups, and individuals. The
donations are then transported
world-wide by military vessels
to regions in need.
For the SOUTHCOM area of
focus, Project Handclasp sup-
plies are stored on Naval Station
Mayport by Commander, Task
Force 43. When ships such as
Farragut deploy to the region,
they take with them as many
pallets as they can to distribute
the items to the various plac-
es they visit, including Chile,
Panama, Peru, and many other
partner nations.

tions apart from is the gen-
erally unpredictable nature of
boarding operations, as well as
the opportunity to establish a
rapport with local mariners.
This relationship is integral
in obtaining information with
regards to potential drug traf-
ficking and establishing the
U.S. naval presence as formi-
dable yet benevolent.
The varied missions and tasks
which Farragut will confront
head on will be a test of the
crew's stamina and resilience.

In spite of some heavier then
normal seas, Gettysburg com-
pleted a myriad of major train-
ing evolutions. Gettysburg's
focus was to maintain proficien-
cy in numerous operations and
prepare for an upcoming readi-
ness assessment. Gettysburg
departed March 31 and imme-
diately made preparations for
the major evolution of firing
the 5-inch/54-caliber MK 45
deck guns as well as the MK
15 Phalanx Close-In Weapons
System (CIWS) guns.
The MK 15 CIWS is capable
of shooting more than 3,000
rounds in a minute and is a point
defense system for Gettysburg.
Another impressive aspect of
the CIWS is that it is currently
deployed in Iraq aboard mobile
land vehicles where it is called
the Counter Rocket, Artillery,
and Mortar (C-RAM). After fir-
ing the CIWS, Gettysburg fired
the large 5-inch deck guns.
After the gun shoot, and
between the continuously
running Damage Control,
Engineering, and Combat
Systems training exercises,
Gettysburg and USNS Laramie
conducted a replenishment at
sea. The replenishment at sea
is an inherently dangerous evo-

lution due to the close proximi-
ty of two ships at sea. However,
the evolution was run to per-
fection as the Sailors manning
the lines and up on the Bridge
worked hand in hand to guar-
antee a smooth replenishment
at sea. The replenishment con-
cluded with successfully prac-
ticing Gettysburg's emergency
breakaway procedure.
While underway Gettysburg
also supported HSL-40, the
Airwolves, during their helicop-
ter deck landing qualifications.
The deck landing qualifica-
tions took place off the coast of
Jacksonville as the pilots flew
to Gettysburg from Mayport.

The evolutions started on
the afternoons of Thursday and
Friday and stretched late into
both nights. The opportunity
to participate in deck landing
qualifications is important to
Gettysburg and it provided valu-
able training for both the pilots
and the ship's flight deck crew.
Gettysburg pulled in early
Saturday morning, as the sun
was rising.
The underway period, while
brief, provided the entire crew
with invaluable training which
will be tested during future
certification exercises and
Gettysburg upcoming deploy-
ments.

About the Kids?, FFSC
Children who witness fam-
ily violence are often forgot-
ten as the unintended victims.
A wide range of child adjust-
ment problems has been found
to be associated with exposure
to domestic violence. Parent's
need to see and understand the
effects of domestic violence
on children as encompassing
behavior, emotion, development
and socialization. Parents need
to understand that there is an
intergenerational cycle of vio-
lence and they may be creat-
ing a legacy for their child of
learned violent behavior. The
purpose of this program is not
to shame parents for events
that have already happen, but
to instill hope that things can
change. The knowledge that the
violence, which many parents
incorrectly believe is unseen
by their children, is negative-
ly impacting their children's
growth and development and
may provide an additional moti-
vator for ending the violence
and seeking intervention.
