coordinate the visit and also
joined the group for the tour.
"I really enjoyed the experi-

The American and Korean

"They were a lively bunch

Gonzales. "I enjoyed their inter-

During the tour the Korean

"I can't believe how small the

ticipated in a Community
Relations (COMREL) project
in Casablanca, Morocco Jan. 25
- 26 as part of their maritime
strategy of Theater Security
Cooperation Engagements.
The COMREL took place at
the Center for Children with
Difficulty, a place for boys
ages eight to 18 who have been
picked up off the streets as run-
aways or have committed petty
crimes. Some of the boys are
able to return to their homes and
families while others are even-
tually placed in an orphanage.
The crew cleared land for the
center to start vegetable gardens
and seeds were donated from
the American Consulate. They
also painted outside panels for
the center and played soccer
with the boys.
Hall's Sailors spent the two
days at the center working,
enjoying local food and bond-
ing with the boys making last-

children but also the crew, said
Ensign Samara Taylor.
The project was well received
by the center according to
Taylor, and many of Hall's
crewmembers said they look

more COMREL projects as it
continues with its deployment.

Do You Live In A Fire Hazard?
From NS Mayport Fire & Emergency
Services
It may be time to redo your
furniture placing if you live in
military housing.
Recently, the NS Mayport
Fire and Emergency Services
responded to a small stove fire
in base housing. Although the
fire did not cause any signifi-
cant damage, it did shed light
on a serious hazard. This hazard
is all too common in military
housing, specifically, the block-
ing of the front foyer area of the
home.
The front door is the most
common entry into a home.
Therefore, it is the first door
used by the firefighters when
responding to your home.
If this door is blocked, pre-
cious time is lost finding anoth-
er point of entry. The front door
is preferred by firefighters for
several reasons other than just
being the most common.
\ DIAMONDS // I
It splits the home in two
areas- living and sleeping.
This is important late at night
when most of us sleep. The
Firefighters will want to make
quick access to your home and
help remove anyone still inside.
Second, if the fire is in the
kitchen it can be attacked with-
out moving smoke and gases
into the rest of the home need-
lessly.
The last reason is for you.
There are commonly three
means of egress from your
home, the front door, kitchen
door and patio door. If you
block this you have only hin-
dered yourself.
It is understandable that
homes on base may be limited
with square footage, but block-
ing your front door (or any door
for that matter) is dangerous and
foolish.
The patio door is also a com-
mon door blocked by large sec-
tional sofas and other furniture.
Keep this area free and clear.
Finally, have an exit plan
for your home. For informa-
tion on exit plans call the Fire
Prevention office at 270-7440.

Robust Afloat Training Specialist
Curriculum Produces Results
By Lt. Brigitte Aungier
ATG Mayport PAO
Afloat Training Group
Mayport's (ATGM) Senior
Chief Fire Controlman William
Mason "lit the spark" when
he was placed in charge of
the Afloat Training Specialist
Program in 2007.
According to Mason, his ini-
tial review of the program made
him want to encourage more
afloat trainers to earn the high-
est level of certification, Afloat
Training Specialist. His plan
included extensive weekly train-
ing sessions and practical study
in all warfare areas.
The Afloat Training Specialist
(ATS) certification program
began at ATGM in 1998. ATS
certification is similar to the
Master Training Specialist cer-
tification, a program designed
to provide a higher general cer-
tification for instructors. ATS
focuses on extensive knowledge
of the Surface Force Training
Manual, which is the guidebook
for shipboard training.
Between October 2007 and
January 2008, a record 15
Afloat Trainers earned their
qualification. Newly quali-
fied Afloat Training Specialists
include Lt. Ray Hatfield,
Chief Petty Officers Charlton
Bernard, Donald Morgan, Jack
Wix, Harvey Flemmings, Pat

vidual certificates in an awards
ceremony on Jan. 16. He said
he expects each member of
his team to work towards this
qualification, because "we are
professional trainers and ATS is
our professional qualification.
The ATS qualification better
prepares our people to go out
and provide the best possible
support to the fleet."
ATGM CMDCM Ken Morrison
said that, "part of being an afloat
instructor is being a mentor and
deckplate leader; they go hand-
in-hand. It is crucial for our
trainers to maintain an opera-
tional mindset geared towards
the deliverable Warships
Ready for Tasking. ATS is our
professional qualification at
ATG and our Afloat Training
Specialists have demonstrated
that ability."
The ATS certification is also
available to all shipboard per-
sonnel who are active mem-
bers of training teams. Several
Mayport based shipboard train-
ers are actively working toward
attaining their ATS certifica-
tion, including training team
members from USS Samuel B
RobertS and USS Farragut.
ATS training is conducted every
Friday at 1 p.m. in the ATG
auditorium.
