Diana Campa, wife of
Master Chief Petty Officer of
the Navy Joe Campa Jr., was
the guest speaker at the Annual
Ombudsman Appreciation Day
luncheon held at the Ocean
Breeze Conference Center on
Naval Station Mayport Sept. 6.
The luncheon was sponsored by
the Mayport USO.
"It's an honor and a privi-
lege for me to be here today,"
said Campa. "I truly believe the
Navy would be hard pressed to
do what it is tasked to do if not
for the support and leadership
from ombudsmen."
Naval Station Mayport
Command Master Chief
Deborah Davidson kicked off
the luncheon with welcoming
remarks, saying ombudsmen are
"an elite group of compassion-
ate professionals." More than 20
local ombudsmen and spouses
attended the event, representing
Mayport-based ships, squadrons
and shore commands.
"The role of an ombudsman
has expanded and evolved over
the years," said Campa. "With
that, the amount of knowledge
and training it takes to hold that
position has greatly increased.
With increased deployments,
IAs and a war, you all have
really raised the bar of service
to our families."
Kandi Debus, Mayport's
ombudsman assembly chair,
said she appreciated Campa's
visit. "By virtue of her posi-
tion as the Navy's ombudsman
at large, I know she recognizes
the challenges we face," said
Debus. "She's been a Navy
wife for more than 20 years so
that means a lot." Campa took
on the role of Navy Ombudsman
at Large, appointed by the

Diana Campa, third from left, wife of Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Joe Campa Jr., presents certificates of appreciation to com-
mand ombudsmans at the Annual Ombudsman Appreciation Day Luncheon on Sept. 6 at Ocean Breeze Conference Center. Campa was
guest speaker at the event, which honored the Navy spouses who become the link between families and their Sailors' commands.

Chief of Naval Operations,
after her husband was selected
as MCPON last summer. She
said it was great to be back at
Mayport, because this is where
they were stationed prior to the
selection. "It's great to see some
old friends and new faces, and
see how the program has really
progressed in the last year," she
said.
Addressing the crowd,
Campa emphasized that Navy
leadership, from the top down,

realizes the importance of the
ombudsman program. Quoting
Chief of Naval Operations Adm.
Mike Mullen, she said "fam-
ily readiness equals Navy readi-
ness, and that in turn supports
the readiness of our national
defense."
"Whether it is a young wife
going through her first deploy-
ment who calls you in the
middle of the night, or a young
petty officer who leaves behind
a husband and three children

for an Individual Augmentation
deployment to Iraq," said
Campa. "Our Sailors are able
to do the job because they can
count on you being there for the
family."
Campa thanked all the
ombudsmen for "giving so
much toward the safety, health,
and well being of our Sailors
and families," and spoke about
local ombudsmen who went
to offer support to Sailors and
families in Gulfport, Miss. after

Hurricane Katrina hit.
After lunch and remarks,
each ombudsman received a
commemorative coin, a pedi-
cure certificate, and a certifi-
cate of appreciation presented
by CMDCM Davidson and
Mrs. Campa. Wendy Layton,
of the Mayport USO, and Sam
Rayburn, of the Fleet and
Family Service Center, were
also recognized for their contri-
butions to the program.

CREDO Corner

IL

By Cmdr.
Jon C. Fredrickson
Director, Spiritual Fitness Division SE
We can give millions to char-
ity and have no charity. We
can read all of the poetry in the
library and not be able to appre-
ciate a single poetic thought. We
can look at every great painting
in the world and find no beauty.
If there is emotional and spir-
itual poverty in our lives, the
problem isn't out there, it is in
here. Playing the blame game
may feel good in the short term
but it really doesn't accomplish
anything in the long term. The
truth is that everyone has been

messed with and messed over
at one time or another and it
really might be someone else's
fault, but that shouldn't leave us
where we are.
I have a friend, who until he
lost it all, was a very, very rich
man. He used to comment to
me that he couldn't understand
why someone who didn't have
anything would have anything
to complain or worry about.
From his perspective, their
problems didn't impact anyone
but themselves. He would say,
"Everyday, every decision I
make, impacts everyone in my

company. If I screw up it might
just cost a whole lot of people
their jobs, their livelihood and
their future. What does the
little guy really have to worry
about? If he blunders, he only
hurts himself."
Obviously, it would be easy
for all of us "little guys" to
observe that my friend wasn't
living in the same reality as the
rest of us. Yet his point is eas-
ily understood. For every dis-
advantage we might think we
have, there are those out there
with all sorts of advantage,
means, and opportunity who are

in the same boat that we are. On
the opposite end of things, there
are also many joyful souls, bur-
dened by horrendous disadvan-
tages we'd never swap for, who
find beauty and delight every-
where that they look.
What's the difference? The
world that these joyful ones live
in is the same as ours, yet their
involvement in it is different.
They stopped hoping for a good
song and started singing one.
They are in touch with their
own specialness, which in turn
connects with the specialness
all around them. We already

have everything we need to be
joyful. The quality of what
passes between the world and
ourselves is a matter of personal
growth.
In one day, in nearly one
hour, my friend lost a multi-mil-
lion dollar business. More than
600 families lost their jobs, their
pensions, and some lost their
homes and their dreams. It was
a gross disadvantage to a mul-
titude of people, but my friend
would now point to that day as
the day that he began to sing his
own song for the first time. He
would say that it was the day

that he grew up and figured out
who he really was.
Personal growth is a process
- sometimes a painful process -
of finding out who you are apart
from what you have, what you
do, or who you are with. It is
a culmination of a journey that
allows us to celebrate ourselves
exactly the way God made us,
warts and all. If you feel a need
to find an inner happiness that
is apart from all of the externals
in your life, give us a call and
sign up for a Personal Growth
Retreat. CREDO's phone num-
ber is 270-6958, option 7.

H omefront in Focus

By Beth Wiruth
Military Spouse Support Contributor
The war has required the
Navy, and all branches of the
military, to look at staffing and
deployments in a new way. This
has led to a process of deploy-
ing individuals as opposed to
units or commands, on TAD
orders (Temporary Assigned
Duty). Depending on the rate,
rank (both officer and enlisted)
and need of the Department of
Defense these individuals, called
Individual Augmentees or IA's,
are deployed for roughly 179
days (six months) to 455 days
(15 months). This IA deploy-
ment is based on the skill set of
the individual that is required by
the military and offers the indi-
vidual an opportunity to utilize
and hone those skills, enhance
their advancement opportuni-
ties and further serve our coun-
try. Those selected to serve as
Individual Augmentees are sent
to Fort Jackson, SC or other
Army installation for roughly
two weeks of intensive combat
training they will need in Iraq,
Afghanistan or Djibouti. Those
selected for certain assignments
will receive additional training
prior to deployment.
As spouses, we need to be
aware of the demands the war
has placed on the Navy and this
new staffing initiative. We need
to be aware that Sailors serving
on shore duty or whose ship is
in the yard period and not ready
for eminent deployment may be
called to serve as IA's in other
locations of the military's mis-
sion throughout the world. As a
result spouses must maintain a
higher state of readiness, keep-

ing our Powers of Attorney,
Wills, ID's, Decals and other
documents up to date. Generally
these IA orders have a relatively
short notice, roughly 30 days
advance notice.
Individual Augmentees, and
their families, face a unique
deployment and require unique
support. A new command,
the Expeditionary Command
Readiness Center or ECRC
stood up in October 2006 with
responsibility to support IA's
and families. Their mission
statement: "Train, equip, cer-
tify, deploy, provide oversight,
reach-back and redeploy (return
to sending command) Navy
Individual Augmentees (IA),
In Lieu Of (ILO) individuals
and provisional units deploying
for nontraditional expedition-
ary missions in support of the
Global War on Terrorism" out-
lines their role.
Once a Sailor receives IA
orders the ECRC takes respon-
sibility for the Sailor. While this
is a young command they have
made considerable efforts and
strides in streamlining and con-
solidating stops prior to and fol-
lowing deployment. This means
less time in transit and more
time at home for the Sailor.
They have established effective
relationships with the Army to
insure IA's are well-trained for
this unique deployment. It is
important to note that the ECRC
is responsible for all IA's, both
active duty and reservists.
The ECRC is located at the
Naval Amphibious Base Little
Creek, VA but has detachments
in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan
as well as liaison representa-

tives at training stations such
as Fort Jackson, SC. These
detachments, accessible by ser-
vice members 24/7, are tasked
with supporting INs and assist-
ing with issues that may arise
during deployment, such as pay
issues, emergency leave, even
equipment or supply issues.
In a traditional deployment,
with a unit or command, spous-
es are able to access informa-
tion, support, communication
and access to the command
and their Sailor through the
Family Readiness Group and
Ombudsman. The very nature
of IA deployments, individuals
versus units, means the spouse
and family left behind is often
isolated, without a communica-
tion stream or command sup-
port. Support, information and
connection with others in the
same situation may be difficult.
While the ECRC is respon-
sible for training, equipping,
deploying and redeploying
(return to sending unit), your
service member's original com-
mand remains responsible for
you and your service mem-
ber. As such your Command
Ombudsman has been trained
and equipped with information
and resources to offer you dur-
ing this unique deployment.
Please contact your Ombudsman
as soon as your service member
receives IA orders so they can
provide you with information
and support. If you do not know
the contact info for your com-
mand your service member can
get that for you from the Plan of
the Week or call the FFSC.
The ECRC provides support
for the service member but also

serves as a conduit for infor-
mation and support for fami-
lies. As part of this support a
hotline has been established for
families and Sailors. The toll
free number, 877-364-4302, is
manned 24/7 by a person. "We
got it [the hotline] in place so
families would be streamlined
to a person who can help right
away." states CDR Mary Sadler,
ECRC's IA Family Readiness
Officer. "The hotline is only
forwarded to voice mail if the
line is busy taking care of other
family members." Families
accessing support through this
hotline can also expect follow-
up calls to ensure that situations
and needs have been resolved.
While neither the hotline nor
command provides direct ser-
vice it does serve as an 'infor-
mation and referral' resource for
families along with the ombuds-
man from your service mem-
ber's sending command. CDR
Sadler adds the ECRC "is THE
conduit that can help an IA fam-
ily member access the programs
and organizations out there and
we are positioned to do that."
Fleet and Family Service
Centers as well as Counseling,
Advocacy and Prevention
Services throughout the fleet
are also responding to the needs
of families and service mem-
bers. Many provide pre-deploy-
ment briefings specific to the IA
deployment, sponsor IA Spouse
Groups and counseling specif-
ic to the challenges of combat
deployment including PTSD
and combat stress.
The ECRC website, www.
ecrc.navy.mil, is another
resource for families and ser-

vice members. The IA Sailor
Handbook and The IA Family
Handbook, both developed by
CNIC and maintained by the
ECRC are available for down-
load from that site.. The ECRC
is responsible for the content of
these publications which will be
reviewed and updated regularly.
Another resource is the Navy
Knowledge Online (NKO) web-
site for Individual Augmentees
and their families. If you have
not accessed the NKO website
you can establish your own
account as a spouse. Logon to
www.nko.navy.mil and follow
the tutorial to establish your
account. You will find the IA
Spouse Support page under
the link entitled 'Navy Family
Community'. This site also pro-
vides an online forum for IA
families to connect with other
families throughout the Navy.
There are currently approxi-
mately 13,000 Sailors deployed
as Individual Augmentees
in locations such as Kuwait,
Afghanistan, Horn of Africa,
GITMO and Iraq. This new
command brings training, sup-
port, equipment and family sup-
port under one roof and that is
good news for Sailors and fami-
lies.
I would like to recommend
three additional resources for
IA families. Military Spouse
Support Network (www.mili-
taryspousesupport.net) and
LovingMySailor (www.lovin-
mySailor.com) are two online
forum of spouses, parents and
loved ones (including 'signifi-
cant others') from all branches
of the service. This network is
a community of very supportive

individuals who share the com-
mon challenges of deployment.
You will find great support on
these forums. Membership is
free.
San Diego's Fleet and Family
Support Center website main-
tains a link from their website
with tremendous resources for
IA's and their families. Check
them out at www.navbasesd.
navy.mil, click on Fleet &
Family Support Center on the
left, then click on the "IA's -
Individual Augmentee" link on
the right.
Finally, Capt. Nowak,
Family Readiness Officer from
the ECRC appeared on Navy
Homefront Talk!, an internet
talk show for Navy spouses.
The podcast of his 40 minute
interview is available at www.
homefrontinfocus.com. Click on
the Talk Show link on the right
then choose the "IA Families"
broadcast. Homefront in Focus,
parent of Navy Homefront Talk!,
produces a free bi-monthly e-
newsletter for IA Families. You
can register for this free news-
letter on the website.
While this deployment is very
different from the traditional
Navy deployment informa-
tion and resources are the keys
to families understanding the
nature of the deployment and
the support available to them.
You are not alone in this unique
deployment.

Exercise May

Delay Traffic

From Staff
Naval Station Mayport
will be participating in
Exercise Solid Curtain from
Sept. 14 -21, 2007. Naval
security personnel annu-
ally conduct Solid Curtain
to enhance their readiness
and ability to prepare for and
defend against threats. The
exercise may cause backups
and delays at the installation
gates.
NS Mayport will restrict
access and implement
increased levels of security
on Sept. 20, for approximate-
ly 12 hours. NS Mayport
will do everything possible
to minimize the impact on
traffic and access. However,
anyone seeking to access the
base on Sept. 20 is advised
to plan for a potential delay.
Disruptions to normal
operations will be limited.
Personnel and other area res-
idents may observe:
Increased traffic or delays

in base access
Increased activity at gates
(security forces, etc.)
Increased patrols on and
around base
Solid Curtain is a rou-
tine exercise and is not
in response to any spe-
cific threat. It is important
to maintain a high level of
security for our forces, an
objective which is accom-
plished by this annual train-
ing. As a direct result of
Solid Curtain training, secu-
rity forces will be better pre-
pared to address threats to
installations and units. The
Navy remains fully capable
of responding to real-world
threats throughout the dura-
tion of the exercise.
For more information
about Solid Curtain 2007,
please contact NS Mayport
PAO at 270-6163, ext. 1011.

FCCJ Approves

New Degree

Ensign Matt Adams, assigned to guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG 74), uses a stadimeter to determine the range to Military
Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Laramie (T-AO 203) and USS John L. Hall (FFG 32). McFaul is participating in
Neptune Warrior, an exercise designed to improve interoperability between allied navies, and to prepare their ships for roles in Coalition
Joint Task Forces.

J.L. Hall Conduct

By MC2 Ricky Allen
Carrier Strike Group 2 Public, ;
Sailors of USS John L. Hall
(FFG 32) simulated boarding a
vessel carrying cargo, inspect-
ing its crew and inspecting the
ship for proper documentation
Sept. 6.
With USS McFaul (DDG
74) serving as the "cargo ship,"
Sailors came aboard dressed for
the occasion, climbing out of
rigid hull inflatable boats wear-
ing everything from battle hel-
mets to flak jackets.
Teams scanned the areas,
using their security training to
clear each area in order to pro-
tect themselves. Teams scanned
everything from the bridge to
the fantail.
One of the teams, according
to Master-at-Arms 1st Class
Brian Williams, also had the job
to "take down" personnel on
the foc'sle, who were McFaul
Sailors, dressed in their civilian
attire to play the role of cargo
ship personnel.
"From there, we headed to
engineering [spaces] to secure
that area," Williams said.
"Right now, we're the ones
stopping the drugs out to sea, so
if we don't get our training like
this, anything could happen out
there, anything unexpected,"
said Boatswain's Mate Seaman
Chris Rowe.
He also said that embarking
on another vessel truly gave the
Sailors an up-close and personal
scenario with some new chal-
lenges.
"We know what's behind
every single door [on board
USS John L. Hall]. These are
ships that I have never been on,
so this is a very new experience
for me," Rowe said.
Chief Electronics Technician
(SW) Drake Schimmel also said
that conducting the training on
another vessel was a good expe-
rience for the team.
"I think this is invaluable
training that we're going to
get here. We don't know these
platforms, and when we go to
take over other vessels, they're

going to be platforms we're
unfamiliar with. So learning the
new routes, figuring it out, the
problem solving they learn on
vessels they're not familiar with
is invaluable," said Schimmel.
Schimmel said he was proud
of his team.
"They did well. A couple of
hiccups, but part of that was due
to the weather and part of that
again was due to a ship they
we're not familiar with, which
is the point of the training," he
said.
Ensign Adam Freihoffer, the
officer in charge of the team,
agreed.
"I think everything went pret-
ty well. I would have been nice
to have a little more time," he
said. "It was a good practice."
The transit to participate
in Exercise Neptune Warrior,
which began Sept. 4, has been
full of activity for the six ships
led by Commander, Destroyer

Security
Squadron (DESRON) 22. In
addition to security training, the
crew on board McFaul has also
been busy conducting a variety
of shipboard training.
During Neptune Warrior,
the ships will participate with
naval forces from Denmark,
France, Germany, New Zealand,
Norway, Spain and United
Kingdom in Neptune Warrior,
a coalition course in the North
Atlantic.
Capt. John Gelinne, com-
mander, DESRON 22, and
his staff are embarked aboard
Norfolk-based McFaul and will
use this opportunity to evalu-
ate the ship and crew in addi-
tion to USS Cole (DDG 67),
USS Nicholas (FFG 47), USS
Elrod (FFG 55), and Mayport,
Fla.-based John L. Hall to cer-
tify each ready for deployment.
USNS Laramie (TAO 203) will
provide logistics support to the
task group.

Harbor Ops Says Bye To

Long Time Teammate

By Bill Austin

Ed Baldwin has just finished
a career that would make for a
great conversation at any coffee
clutch, but he wouldn't want
that. Instead of boasting about
completing more than 53 years
of honorable government ser-
vice, he would most likely offer
sage advice instead of talking
about himself.
"Learn your job and be pro-
fessional," said Baldwin, when
asked the secret to a successful
career.
Baldwin started his govern-
ment service with the Navy in
1955 and served 30 years and

After hanging up his Navy

"This is a man with a most

Volunteer speakers are needed
at all levels, from senior officers
to junior enlisted, active duty

not a requirement. Volunteers
should be within weight stan-

The Speakers Bureau program
is designed to tell the "Navy

vary, which is why a variety of
volunteers is needed. Here are

During BAP Chipana's latest

Speakers Needed

Talk about experiences since
leaving high school. Why you
joined the Navy, life on a ship,
what do each of your ribbons
mean, etc... Or, for a science/
technology day, maybe have an
IT/ST/CT come out and talk.
Veterans group: Might want
a chief to talk about the chal-
lenges (and rewards) of manag-

ing Sailors today. Talk about our
contributions in Iraq. Maybe a
doctor or corpsman who served
in Iraq.Speakers are usually
matched with speaking engage-
ments in the area of your base.

Gettysburg XO Frocked
By Lt.j.g.
Andrew Bonderud

Sweet Serenade By CPO Selects

I -

USS Gettysburg PAO
William R. Daly, executive officer of USS
Gettysburg (CG 64) was recently frocked to the
rank of Commander, United States Navy. He has
been XO of Gettysburg since October 2006, and
he learned of his selection for promotion to the
permanent rank of 0-5 this past June.
Frocking requires permission of the Navy's
Personnel Command and it is done for those
who are generally filling billets higher than
their current rank, but who are often selected
to be promoted in the near future to that higher
rank. While Daly will now wear the uniform of
a Commander, the Navy will not pay him as one
until 2008.
Daly graduated With Merit from the United
States Naval Academy in 1993. Additionally, he
received a master's degree in National Security
and Strategic Studies from the United States
Naval War College, where he graduated With
Distinction in 2005.
He has served primarily on Ticonderoga-class
Cruisers. In addition to Gettysburg, he served
on USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) and USS Thomas
S. Gates (CG 51). He also served a tour as
Operations Officer on USS Spruance (DD 963).
Ashore, he served on the staff of Commander,
U.S. Pacific Fleet, and the staff of the Chief of
Naval Operations.
"I am grateful to this command for their sup-
port," Daly commented on his recent frocking.

USS Gettysburg's executive officer was recently
frocked to Commander during the ship's deploy-
ment with the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group.
"The ship is working hard and we are doing great
things on this deployment. I'm very pleased to
be frocked during such a meaningful time for the
ship."
USS Gettysburg is a Ticonderoga-class guid-
ed missile cruiser, homeported at Naval Station
Mayport, Florida. It is currently deployed to the
Arabian Gulf as the Air Defense Commander
with the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group.

Chief Petty Officer Selects from Naval Station Mayport and its tenant commands woke up
early Sept. 6for a sunrise serenade at Davis Hall where Diana Campa, wife of Master Chief
Petty Officer of the Navy Joe Campa Jr., was staying during her visit to the base. Mayport CMC,
CMDCM Deb Davidson was also on hand for the serenade.

Gettysburg Provides Air Defense

For Enterprise Strike Group

From USS Enterprise Gettysburg
Public. -
There is no "I" in team, and
there definitely isn't one ship
that makes up a strike group.
The USS Enterprise (CVN 65)
Carrier Strike Group is cur-
rently deployed to the Arabian
Gulf, and it consists of seven
ships and one submarine, each
of which contributes to accom-
plishing the mission.
Aboard the Ticonderoga-
class, guided missile cruiser
USS Gettysburg (CG 64), the
mission is diverse and broad.
Above all, Gettysburg serves the
Strike Group as the Air Defense
Commander, responsible for
protecting the Big E along with
other Strike Group and coalition
assets from all types of airborne
threats. Additionally, as is the
objective of the entire Strike
Group, Gettysburg aims to deter
illegal acts of piracy and to fos-
ter constructive relationships
within the region. These goals
require a versatile ship and a
dynamic crew.
"Our main focus out here is
to make sure all of the coun-
tries have stable global mari-
time operations," said Lt.
Kim Bynum, Air Defense
Commander Liaison Officer.
"They can go out and do their
fishing if they want. They can
fly their aircraft and be safe.
We're here to be a part of that."
Bynum is assigned to
Gettysburg, however she
operates aboard the flag-
ship, Enterprise, as the liai-
son between Strike Group
Commander, Adm. Dan
Holloway, and the Gettysburg
Commanding Officer, Capt. Bill
McQuilkin.
"Because the admiral is
aboard Enterprise, I'm here to
brief him and his staff on what's
going on with Gettysburg," said
Bynum.
Gettysburg is responsible for
surveilling a broad range of air-
space, utilizing its state-of-the-
art SPY-1B, phased array radar.
With this resource, Gettysburg
can track contacts out to hun-
dreds of miles. However, the
ship is not just limited to what's
going on around the Strike
Group. Gettysburg acts as a
hub of information, and with
the help of other Strike Group
assets, as well as other coalition
partners in the area, Gettysburg
is able to track contacts within
the entire theater of operation.
"Our job out here is not
just to provide air defense for
Enterprise and the Strike Group,
but air defense for the entire
theater," said Bynum.
"Another good thing our
radar does," continued Bynum,
"is maintain the recognized air
picture, or RAP. On Gettysburg,
we're running the link. All of

the inputs from the other ship's
radars get put into one screen.
So all of the air contacts,
whether they're picked up from
Enterprise, another ship in the
Strike Group or a helo in the
air, are put into one database
and Gettysburg collates that
into a common operating pic-
ture that picture is fed out to
5th Fleet, and all other warfare
commanders so there is one big
picture that everyone can have
situational awareness to what's
going on."
Operations Specialist 1st
Class (SW/AW) Alan McKnight
stands watch in Gettysburg's
Combat Information Center
(CIC) as the Anti-Air Warfare
Coordinator (AAWC), where
he is responsible for gathering,
analyzing and disseminating
information about the RAP. He
said, "Our mission is impor-
tant because we provide air and
point defense for the carrier
so that they can conduct flight
operations in support of the
Global War on Terrorism."
Chief Operations Specialist
(SW) (Select) Avery Dunn, one
of petty officers recently select-
ed for advancement to chief
petty officer, is the operations
information division leading
petty officer. He commented
that, "[Gettysburg] is the first
line of defense for the Carrier
Strike Group. If we detect an
air contact with a threatening
profile, we will dispatch one of
our air assets to identify it, and
if needed, engage it."
Gettysburg doesn't just watch
the show from the surface. The
cruiser is equipped with verti-
cal launching system, or VLS,
which launches Tomahawk
cruise missiles and the Standard
Missile 2 (SM2). While Big E
has its own ship's self-defense
system (SSDS) to guard against
close range threats, Gettysburg
serves as the first line of
defense.
"If Gettysburg is doing their
job," said Bynum, "We're tak-
ing care of any threats before
Enterprise gets into self-defense
mode. We have weapons that
can reach out 80 miles instead
of eight miles. You want
Gettysburg out there as shotgun
because we can see threats and
take care of threats farther out."
Bynum is quick to point out
that when it comes to defending
the Strike Group's most impor-

tant asset, Gettysburg isn't just
limited to air defense.
"We've also provided some
surface protection for Enterprise
too," said Bynum. "We pro-
vide blocking or shouldering
for Enterprise in case there are
surface threats trying to get too
close to the ship."
With all of this responsibility
for a crew of a little more than
300 Sailors, everyone has to be
versatile and not limited in their
job capability. Many Gettysburg
Sailors take on more tactical
responsibilities not normally
required for someone in their
rating.
Senior Chief Electronics
Technician (SW) Christian
Detje stands watch in CIC as the
Combat Systems Coordinator
(CSC). He said, "If you told me
two years ago that I would be in
the Arabian Gulf, defending an
aircraft carrier, I would've told
you that you're crazy." As CSC,
he is responsible for coordinat-
ing the various weapons and
combat systems onboard, and
ensuring that they are aligned
and configured for the environ-
ment in which the ship is oper-
ating. "As an ET, opportunities
like this don't come along very
often, and I'm very excited to
be supporting the team in this
capacity."
Navy Career Counselor
1st Class (SW/AW) Wilfredo
Vargas is another prime exam-
ple of Sailors cross-training and
contributing to the ship's mis-
sion in unconventional ways for
their rates. While his primary
duties involve administrative
issues and counseling young-
er Sailors on their next career
move, he also stands three-sec-
tion watch on SCAT (Small
Craft Attack Team) as a load-
er for the .50 Caliber gun and
MK38 weapon system.
"It's really challenging to do
both jobs at the same time; both
jobs have different type of cus-
tomers," said Vargas. "The one
I went to school for (command
career counselor) gives me the
satisfaction of taking care of
my people (my best customers).
The job that I learned onboard
(SCAT) gives me the satisfac-
tion of being ready and avail-
able to defend the ship and its
crew from un-welcomed non-
customers."
When asked about the dif-
ferent ways that crewmembers

are now participating in tactical
watch stations, he said, "We're
here to support each other."
Chief Personnel Specialist
(SW/AW) Joey Jefcoat is the
Admin Office's leading chief
petty officer, but he also stands
watch in the Pilot House as the
Weapons Control Officer, coor-
dinating and controlling the
various SCAT stations around
the ship.
"You can not be in today's
Navy and simply do your
assigned job," said Jefcoat. "A
Sailor has to be able to adapt to
any situation and be versatile."
Versatility, flexibility, respon-
sibility just a few of the char-
acteristics that make a team
great and with Gettysburg as
the wingman, Enterprise Strike
Group will continue to be the
most effective in the fleet.

the Florida Dietetic Association
Diet Technician (Registered) for
2007 on July 10 at an award
ceremony held at the Marco

Nominated by the Jacksonville
Dietetic Association for this
year's state recognition, Cozier
was selected in 2005 and
2006 as the Jacksonville Diet
Technician of the Year. The
American Dietetic Association,
a national organization with
65,000 members, endorsed her
selection at the state level.
Cozier is the lead Diet

in the Nutrition Department in
1989. "This is something I have
wanted to do since high school,"
she said. "I actually entered
the field late. I supported my
husband's career and when he
retired from the military, that's
when I entered the field."
As the lead Diet Technician,
Cozier oversees the preparation
of patient trays and ensures the

"I train them on how to function
in a hospital setting since they
are familiar with galley cook-
ing. They have to be trained in
the specialized care needed for
our patients here in the hospital
as opposed to them working on
a ship," she explained.
Cozier enjoys working with
the military staff because of
their enthusiasm and discipline.
"I love working with the
young people who just come in
because they are so energetic
and so willing to learn and to do
things," she reported.
She is an active member

further their education. Cozier
attended FCCJ to attain her
dietetic certification-a require-
ment not needed when she first
started her career.

2002 to be registered and then I
had to take an exam," she said.
One duty Cozier finds espe-

New Technology Shortens X-R;

Thanks to the latest technol-
ogy at Naval Station Mayport
Branch Medical Clinic, patients
in the Radiology Department
are experiencing shorter wait
times. The change from chemi-
cal to digital X-rays has many
benefits.
"Most importantly it helps
our patients in the long run,
said Hospital Corpsman 2nd
Class Anthony Bowman. "This
machine's accuracy means that
they will not have to be re-shot
and re-exposed to potentially
harmful chemicals"
The clinic added the AGFA
digital radiography system to
the radiology department when
the new clinic was open in 2004
and it has done wonders to bring
down the patients exposure
rate to radiation, waiting time
in the department and the tech-
nologists exposure to the car-
cinogenic chemicals. This new
technology allows for the tech-
nologists to adjust the image
without exposing the patient to
added radiation and decreased
the technologist unsatisfactory
film rate by 99 percent.
"The AGFA system cost the
Navy between $800,000 and

$1.25 million, but by decreasing
the hazard to the patients and
technologists and the benefits of
providing quality medical diag-
nostic images for the medical
officers, it has paid for itself in
the long run," said Bowman.
In the past patients had to
check in the department get
x-rays done, wait to see if the
films were okay and then hand
carry the films back to the doc-
tor who ordered them.
At the end of the day the
technologist went around the
clinic collected all the films
and sent them by courier to the
radiologist at the hospital who
read them and sent them back to
be filed in the patient's record.
With the new system, the films

HSL-44 Sailor

Receives U.S.

Citizenship

By Lt.j.g Cory Fenton
HSL-44
Who is Markland Grant? To
some he's "Joe Navy," to others
he's an aviation mechanic, but
if you asked him last month,
he might say, "A United States
citizen!"
A native of Jamaica, Grant
attained citizenship in August.
Grant was a motivated indi-
vidual even before he signed
up with the United States Navy.
He has an Associates Degree
in Architecture and continued
his education at Embry-Riddle
Aeronautics University study-
ing Professional Aeronautics.
Grant decided to join the Navy
in October 2006. Although he
has served his new home coun-
try for less than a year, his many
accomplishments certainly
exemplify the character of this
young Navy Sailor.
In boot camp, Grant was
Recruit Chief Petty Officer in
which he took charge and moti-
vated his division. This allowed
them to become a strong team,
so much so that his division was
the best in his graduating class
of December 2006. He received
the title of Honor Recruit and
won the Military Officers of
America Association Award.
From boot camp, Grant
moved on to "A" School where
he was the watchbill coordi-
nator for his barrack, as well
as section leader, AM school
house leader, and vice chairman
of DAPA. Grant was select-
ed for a BETA course for the
Aviation Structural Mechanic
"A" School and was one of the
first students to complete the
AM BETA course. Grant has
also returned to his hometown
of Orlando, Fla., to do his RAP
duty. It is easy to see why Grant
has received three Letters of

Seaman Markland Grant
Appreciation and two Letters of
Commendation.
Although Grant certainly
seems to be kept busy with his
work he manages to find time
helping out in his community.
In Pensacola, Fla., he volun-
teered to do maintenance work
at the Ronald McDonald House.
He also fed the homeless while
in Pensacola at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church on Saturday
mornings. To top it off, Grant
helped clean the beach on the
Emerald Coast.
Although Grant has officially
only been serving since last fall,
he says that he has always tried
to live by the Navy Core Values
and will proudly continue to
"defend the Constitution of the
Unites States."
In the future Grant said he
would like to become a com-
missioned officer. He says that
his experience as a junior Sailor
has already enhanced his ability
to lead his colleagues as well
as help them better prepare for
their futures in the Navy. Most
importantly, Grant does not take
for granted his service for his
country.
"Being in the Navy is a priv-
ilege for me and there is not
a day that goes by that I don't
cherish it," he said.

USNS Comfort Public. "
The hospital ship USNS
Comfort (T-AH 20) departed
Haiti Sept. 8, after nearly a
week of humanitarian opera-
tions in the country.
Comfort offered services in
four locations in and around
the city of Port-au-Prince, a
small port city, and de la Croix-
des-Bouquet, a town several
miles inland. In all, services
were offered at the Hopital De
University Etat d' Haiti, Hopital
Universitaire de la Paix, Centre
Hopitalier Eliazar Germain in
Petion-Ville, and Centre de
Sante, a health training center
in de la Croix-des-Bouquets.
Services included primary adult
and pediatric care, dental ser-
vices, optometry and veterinar-
ian care.
The mission required the par-
ticipation of Comfort's entire
joint-agency crew. Members
of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air

rinidad
Force, Coast Guard, Public
Health Service, Military Sealift
Command, Canadian Forces,
and the non-governmental orga-
nization Project Hope all played
a big part in this mission.
"Comfort's humanitarian mis-
sion to this country was very
important, and we hope the
medical services and construc-
tion assistance we've provided
will have a very positive effect
on the Haitians we've been able
to treat," said Capt. Bob Kapcio,
Comfort's mission commander.
In addition to medical services
the Comfort team provided, the
embarked Naval Construction
Battalion Maintenance Unit
202's community projects in
Haiti included repairing elec-
trical and solar water systems,
cabinets; building an incinerator
for medical waste and repaint-
ing the Centre de Sante health
training center.
Comfort will visit Trinidad
and Tobago.

Navy Family Care Plan

Requirement Update

From Navy Personnel Command Com-
munications Office
The Navy announced chang-
es to the Navy Family Care
Plan policy in a Navy message
released recently.
"Thorough and effective plan-
ning for the care of a Sailor's
family is critical to mission
readiness," said Vice Adm. John
C. Harvey, Jr. Chief of Naval
Personnel, in NAVADMIN
204/07 U.S. Navy Family Care
Policy Requirements.
A family care plan ensures
Sailors with dependents have
established adequate care
arrangements for deployments,
reserve mobilizations, and
temporary duty or other peri-

ods during which the service
member is unavailable. Policy
changes include the following:
Sailors with primary or shared
physical custody of a minor
child or children, and who are
not married to the other natural
or adoptive parent of the minor
child or children, shall submit
a family care plan. Both mem-
bers of a married dual military
couple where one or both have
primary or shared physical cus-
tody of a minor child or chil-
dren, shall submit a family care
plan.

OPM said that because of

As of Aug. 17, the U.S. Navy
has seen the lowest traffic
related fatality rate for the "101
Critical Days of Summer," since
the Navy started recording them
in 1980.
According to Cmdr. Ed
Hobbs, Naval Safety Center
data management and analysis
department head, there have
been 11 traffic fatalities Navy-
wide, since the Memorial Day
2006 until present as opposed to

91 traffic fatalities in 1981.
There have been several ways
the Navy has increased traf-
fic safety awareness recently
according to Bonnie Revell,
Naval Safety Center traffic
safety and off-duty recreational
specialist.
"We have had several part-
nership programs which have
kicked off that are very success-
ful," said Revell. "One of them
is Street Smart, where a para-
medics travel to military instal-
lations and put on a presenta-
tions about the consequences

wearing a seat belt. They show
very graphic videos and they
get audience participation."
Naval Safety Center also
works with Mothers Against
Drunk Drivers and Recording
Artists and Actors and Athletes
Against Drunk Driving.
Sailors can learn to be safer
on the road by taking a AAA
driving courses or motorcy-
cle safety courses, which are
offered through base safety
offices world wide or visit the
