One of the most difficult
aspects of serving in the U.S.
Navy is the inevitable separa-
tion between Sailors and their
families.
Particularly during long
deployments, young children
and toddlers often have the most
difficult time coping with the
absence of their parent. While
technological advances facili-
tate frequent e-mail communi-
cation, most kids simply want
to see their mom or dad to know
that they are all right.
Sailors on board USS
Gettysburg (CG 64) have been
preparing for their upcoming
deployment for months, but for
this next deployment, they hope
to alleviate some of the pain of
family separation by partici-
pating in the United Through
Reading program. Sponsored
by the non-profit Family
Literacy Foundation, the United
Through Reading program
allows deployed Sailors to read
books to their children on either
video or audiocassette, which is
then mailed home to the family.
The stated mission of this pro-

The U.S. cervical cancer
numbers in 2006 were esti-
mated to be more than 9,000
women including more than
3,700 deaths. Worldwide, this
disease is much more deadly,
killing about 270,000 women
each year. Certain strains of a
virus known as HPV, or human
papilloma virus, are responsible
for nearly all cases of cervical
cancer. Recently, a vaccine,
Gardasil, has been developed
with promise for reducing HPV
infections.
HPV is a very common
sexually transmitted virus that
many people pick up at some
point in their lives. More than
20 million men and women in
the United States are currently
infected with HPV and there are
6.2 million new infections each
year. HPV is most common in
young women and men who are
in their late teens and early 20s
who are sexually active. By

age 50, at least 80 percent of
women will have acquired HPV
infection.
The virus usually does not
cause any symptoms and most
people's immune system clears
it up. Sometimes, though, HPV
lingers. When that happens,
over time it can cause chang-
es in the cervix that could turn
into cancer. Pap smears can
find these changes before they
become dangerous. However,
many American women who
should get tested, don't. Over
the years, researchers have been
looking for ways to prevent
cervical cancer by focusing on
vaccines for HPV-16 and HPV-
18, the strains of the virus that
cause about 70 percent of all
cervical cancers.
The development of Gardasil,
a vaccine against the human
papilloma virus was that was
recently approved by the FDA,
is one of the most important
advances in women's health in
recent years. The vaccine pro-

2 THE MIRROR, NS MAYPORT, Thursday, May 17, 2007

Captain's Column

Hurricane season is here a lit-
tle early as we saw last week. If
this is your first tour in Florida,
don't let that storm off the coast
fool you.
It can happen just that fast.
In fact the last hurricane to hit
Jacksonville directly with a
great amount of damage was
Dora in the 1960 and it started
just like the storm last week. If
you are not prepared now, you
are not going to be prepared if
we have another one pop up on
the horizon. Make sure your
family has a plan and it includes
evacuation location, what to do
with the pets, and how to com-
municate with you and the Navy
on their location. Please make
sure you are all talking to your
folks about the importance of
preparedness.
The Mirror will be putting

Capt. Charles King
out informative articles on hur-
ricane topics geared to keep you
informed. And there are loads
of information, checklists and
survival techniques available on
the internet.
Navy Criminal Investigative

Service is stepping up its inves-
tigations into BAH-related
fraud. Since 2004 the amount
of cases being investigated has
gone up dramatically, and the
Mayport field office for NCIS
has been part of that increase.
Government losses since 2004
have equaled more than $5 mil-
lion, with only 16.7 percent
of that received back in resti-
tution. Stealing from the gov-
ernment is stealing from your
shipmates and every taxpayer
in the United States. Much like
abusing drugs, the penalty fits
the crime. Is a BCD and con-
viction by a court, worth it to
your future? I think not...
At Quarters last week, I was
asked about the MWR events
and what we can do to get more
of them. Well, we already have
an amazing amount of events

that are tailored just for active
duty and dependents. These
events are usually free or cost-
friendly. We spend a lot of ener-
gy putting out fliers, changing
the MWR billboard by the front
gate, Web site updates but you
have to read it to know about it.
Here are a couple big events
coming up:
Military Appreciation Day
is on May 30 at the Sea Otter
Pavilion. The USO received a
$10,000 grant from Disney so
it should be an incredible event.
There will be a raffle for prizes
and a Silent Auction has been
added for the higher end prizes.
And don't forget to come to the
dunk tank for your chance to
get the base XO, CMC, some of
the base police officers, maybe
a Commodore or two and I
will take a turn on the wet seat

to get soaked! This day is going
to be a blast, don't miss it.
Keep your schedule clear for
June 6 from 6-11 p.m. The USO
is sponsoring a USO Night at
Adventure Landing, and tick-
ets are only $1 and are on sale
at the USO. This event is only
for active duty and dependents.
Please bring your ID cards when
you are ready to buy tickets.
Recreational activities are
great, however, it's always ben-
eficial to yourself and others to
invest in learning opportunities.
And don't forget the impor-
tance of giving your time to
help others. There are a lot of
volunteer opportunities through
the USO and volunteers are
needed for a pressure washing
and painting project at Mayport
and also to help rebuild a deck
at Mayport. All materials/sup-

plies will be provided as well as
lunch. Please email wlayton@
usojax.com or call 246-3481.
There are no specific dates for
these projects so we can work
around your schedule.
As always, thank you for
keeping the base looking sharp.
We have a very dedicated group
of folks at Base Services to help
keep the base looking sharp
but we all need to pitch in and
police the parking areas, around
our buildings and ships. The
wind reaks havoc on dump-
sters that are left open. If you
haven't picked up any trash
lately, try it; you'll feel good
about yourself and working at
the best base in the Navy.
Keep those suggestions com-
ing to me at charles.p.king@
navy.mil Have a great week-
end.

Fleet Talk

By FORCM(EWS/SW)
Tony Santino
Force Master (
Navy Expeditionary Combat Command
Throughout our careers, each
of us has had someone that's
made a difference in our careers
or personal lives.
He or she might have been a
Chief, LPO, another more expe-
rienced Sailor in our command,
or someone we simply referred
to as our "Sea Daddy."
This person provided good
advice, guidance, or some well-

placed calibration, and ultimate-
ly had a positive impact on us
and our career.
The idea of mentoring is noth-
ing new. Each of us, at some
point in our careers, has been
mentored, or mentored someone
else. The Navy's mentor pro-
gram provides a formal process
to foster a mentoring culture
throughout the Navy in order to
develop and retain talented 21st
century leaders.
Mentoring is an extremely
powerful tool for professional

and personal development. It's
a process that deliberately pairs
a person who is more skilled
or experienced (the mentor),
with one who is less so (the
prot6g6e). Through this process,
the experienced person trans-
fers skills and experiences in a
focused, effective and efficient
manner.
Simply put, a mentor is a per-
son who helps someone else
learn something the learner
would otherwise have learned
less well, more slowly or not

at all.
Mentors help prot6g6es set
personal and professional goals
and then, working together,
helps the prot6g6e develop a
mentoring plan to achieve those
goals while providing consistent
feedback along the way.
The mentor may play a vari-
ety of roles resource, advisor,
coach, or consultant all with
the goal of developing that pro-
t6g6e into a future Navy leader.
Mentors, by being a positive

influence, help instill self-confi-
dence into our Sailors, improve
morale and increase team build-
ing. Ultimately, this gives
Sailors greater job satisfaction
and career success.
Prot6g6es should provide
their mentors with honest and
accurate information and work
toward those goals agreed
upon in the mentoring plan.
Prot6g6es need to use their men-
tors properly, and not circum-
vent their chain of command.

As I mentioned earlier, men-
toring is nothing new, but it
is critical to the professional
growth of outstanding leaders.
Shipmates, take advantage of
the opportunity to have a men-
tor and benefit from the wealth
of experience and knowledge he
or she has to offer.
If you have the opportunity
to be a mentor to someone, do
it! There's no greater reward
than developing today's young
Sailors into tomorrow's leaders.

USS Stark History

Book Signing May 25

Author Harold Lee Wise will
be signing copies of his new
book, Inside the Danger Zone:
The U.S. Military in the Persian
Gulf 1987-1988 (Naval Institute
Press 2007) on May 25 from 6-
9 p.m. at Barnes & Noble St.
Johns 10280 Midtown Pkwy, in
Jacksonville.
Inside the Danger Zone is
a history of the U.S. military
involvement in the Persian Gulf
in 1987 and 1988 a time of
burning ships, air strikes, and
secret missions the prelude
period to Desert Storm and the
most recent U.S. invasion of
Iraq. Based largely on first-hand
accounts from veterans of that
era, it is an up-close, detailed
report from the front lines of "a
guerrilla war at sea." Many of
the dramatic incidents of this
period are told in depth with

new information and details
never before seen in print.
In May 1987, an Iraqi plane
fired two missiles into USS
Stark, a lone U.S. Navy frigate
on patrol in the Gulf. This dead-
ly attack heralded the beginning
of a new era in U.S. Middle
Eastern policy. From then until
the end of the Iran-Iraq War,
American forces carried out an
unprecedented series of mili-
tary operations in the Gulf. A
planned tanker protection mis-
sion evolved into a naval quasi-
war with Iran and culminated in
the largest sea-air battle since
World War II.
For more information on the
signing, call 928-3581.
Harold Lee Wise is an adjunct
history professor at Elizabeth
City State University in North
Carolina.

The 20th annual memorial
service for USS Stark (FFG 31)
will be held at Naval Station
Mayport's Memorial Park at
10:30 a.m. today (May 17).
On May 17, 1987, 37 USS
Stark Sailors were killed when
two missiles struck the ship
without warning after 9 p.m.
while the ship was on patrol in
the southern Persian Gulf. One
missile exploded, causing tre-
mendous damage and immedi-
ate fires in the forward part of
the ship. Fuel from the second
missile intensified the fires,
and the crew fought the inferno
through the night and the next
day. Aided by equipment and
firefighting teams from other
Navy ships, the crew succeeded
in saving the ship, but the cost
was heavy.
Restored and returned to

Today
service in 1988, Stark won
two Battle 'E' awards as best
ship in the squadron. After the
ship was decommissioned in
1999, the Naval Order of the
United States and Naval Station
Mayport partnered to preserve
the observance of this tragic
incident that wrought so much
misery for the crew members
and their families.
The service will feature
accounts of some of the events
that occurred following the
attack, both aboard the ship
and here in Mayport, from crew
and volunteers and staff who
worked to provide information
and support services to the fam-
ilies of crew members.
Following the service, there
will be a reception hosted by
the Naval Order of the United
States and the Mayport Council
Navy League at the CPO Club.

It Was A Victory Against All Odds

USS Hue City Remembers Namesake Battle

By PH2 Lynn Friant
COMPACENSE
Tears and memories of battle
set the tone for the 39th obser-
vance of the Battle of Hue City
on May 13 at Naval Station
Mayport.
"You have earned the right
to be called heroes," said guest
speaker, Chaplain Eli Taksian,
as he shared his recollection of
what he described as the "larg-
est bloodbath in the Vietnam
War." Takesian was assigned
as the chaplain for the 3rd
Battalion, 5th Marines and regi-
mental chaplain, 5th Marines,
Vietnam in 1967-1968.
The Battle of Hue began Jan.
31, 1968, during the Vietnamese
holiday of Tet when the North
Vietnamese Army launched
one of the fiercest battles of
the Vietnam War. Three under-
strength U.S. Marine battal-
ions, consisting of fewer than
2,500 men, attacked and sound-
ly defeated more than 10,000
entrenched enemy troops, lib-
erating Hue for South Vietnam.
The ancient Vietnamese impe-
rial city of Hue was the coun-
try's cultural capital, a unique
blend of French and Vietnamese
influence. Hue was a symbol
of everything the Vietnamese

people admired and respected. --- -- --- -.
For this reason, it was spared ". ,
the terrible effects of war--until T, "'

Tet is the abbreviation of Tet

the new period. Tet marks the
beginning of a new year on theW
lunar calendar and the begin-
ning of spring.
The Battle of Hue lasted four
weeks and cost 142 American
lives. Marines of the 1st and
5th Regiments, fighting along-
side the Army of the Republic
of Vietnam's 1st Division, were
supported by U.S. Army 7th
and 12th Cavalry Regiments,- '..-
among other units, in the battle
for Hue. U.S. Marines immedi-
ately launched a counter-offen-
sive called Operation Hue City.
North Vietnamese and Viet
Cong forces were driven out
of Hue little by little as U.S.
Marines retook the city one
block at a time. The Marines
retook the Treasury building,

COMFISCS Visits SERMC Mayport

From FISC JAX
Rear Adm. Raymond Bembe,
COMFISCS, visited the NAS
JAX and Naval Station Mayport
area from May 7-10 to discuss
Supply, Storage and Distribution
(SS&D) initiatives and the
Naval Supply (NAVSUP) 100-
Day Plan.
Berube was accompanied by
SES William Bickert, Deputy
COMFISCS. FISC JAX hosted
the visit. During his first three
days at FISC JAX, Berube vis-
ited the Fleet Readiness Center
Southeast on NAS JAX to dis-
cuss the Base, Realignment and

tives.
On May 10, Berube attended
a community breakfast with
Jacksonville Area Supply Corps
Association officers and chiefs
and discussed Distance Support,
Material Support Initiatives,
Individual Augmentations and
CNO strategic objectives.
After the breakfast, Berube
traveled to the FISC JAX Fuel
Farm, met with employees, and
received a tour of the facilities.
He then visited the Southeast
Regional Maintenance Center
(SERMC) at Naval Station
Mayport. While there he met
with employees and recognized
the Junior Sailor of the Quarter,
the Wage Grade Employee of
the Quarter, and an employee
with 40 years time in service.
Afterwards he toured FISC
JAX DET SERMC Supply
Operations.
Later that day he spoke to
members of FISC JAX.
Capt. Karl Rau, Commander,
FISC JAX, introduced Berube.
"We are very honored to have
our boss here," Rau said. "He
has several things he'd like to
share with you."
Berube began his presenta-
tion with a short introduction
and then showed a DVD featur-
ing Rear Adm. Alan Thompson,

for Navy is to optimize logistic
capability that's provided to the
various warfare enterprises."
Afterwards Berube fielded
questions from the audience

As part of its duties as
Standing NATO Maritime
Group 2 (SNMG2) flagship,
USS Roosevelt participated
in an 11-day surge in support
of NATO Operation Active
Endeavor (OAE).
The primary goal of this
operation is to provide securi-
ty to maritime shipping in the
Mediterranean. The focus is to
prevent illegal operations, such
as human trafficking and terror-
ist activity, from occurring in
Mediterranean and spreading to
European nations.
While operating in and around
the Strait of Sicily, Roosevelt
concentrated on hailing as many
merchant, sailing, fishing and
other vessels.
Additionally in support of
OAE, Roosevelt conducted vis-
its to local fishing vessels.
Deploying one of its RHIBs,
Roosevelt sent over a team of
Sailors led by boarding officer,
Ensign Paul Krakau, to gather
information from smaller ves-
sels, mainly fishing fleets, and
to spread awareness of OAE to
mariners in the Mediterranean.
The questions asked aimed

at identifying unusual or illegal
activities that have been wit-
nessed or rumored in the sur-
rounding waters. The teams
also offered the vessels baskets
of fruit and Roosevelt welcome
aboard pamphlets to demon-
strate goodwill.
These visits, as well as the
vessel hailings, helped demon-
strate the NATO presence in the
Mediterranean Sea and spread
the purpose of OAE.
Roosevelt's Commanding

Officer, Cmdr. John Carter, set
a goal for his bridge teams to
conduct 2,000 hails by the time
its deployment is over.
After its short 10-day surge,
Roosevelt was well on its way
to reaching that goal with 391
hails made.
Upon completion of its OAE
surge, Roosevelt will pull into
Mykonos, Greece as the crew
readies themselves for the next
SNMG2 flagship task, Exercise
NIIRIS.

HSL-48 'Scout' Out Cubs

From HSL-48
HSL-48 recently hosted a
local Cub Scout Troop and their
families for a squadron tour.
The Cub Scouts of Pack 623,
led by former SH-60B pilot
Robert Lawrence and based
out of Isle of Faith Methodist
Church, enjoyed an exciting
morning dedicated to learning
about the SH-60B helicopter
and its missions.
The Cub Scouts first watched
a video that showcased the vast
capabilities of the LAMPS MK
III system. The video featured
Hellfire missile shots, rescue
swimmer deployments, and tor-
pedo drops, in addition to ship-
board take offs and landings.
Lt.j.g. Sam Wheeler of HSL-
48 then gave a short lesson
on the technology behind and
the uses of the ANVS 9 Night
Vision Goggles. Afterwards,
the lights were lowered and
-the Cub Scouts were given the
Opportunity to look through the

goggles and see infrared strobe
lights and chemical sticks emit-
ting light not seen by the naked
eye.
Another highlight of the day
had nothing to do at all with
Naval Aviation.
The Cub Scouts got to pet
"Skirt," HSL-48's live mascot,
a 9-foot, Columbian Red-Tailed
boa constrictor, handled by
Lt.j.g. Ian LaSpina.
Following Skirt's retreat to
her cage, the Cub Scouts head-
ed to the HSL-48 hangar where
a helicopter was on static dis-
play. Lt. Troy Dickey, Lt.j.g.
Helen Smith, and Aviation
Warfare Systems Operator 2nd
Class Luke Pratt assisted the
Cub Scouts as they climbed
through the helicopter, sat in the
seats, posed with the GAU-16
machine gun, and asked a slew
of questions that rivaled many
check ride briefs.
The Scouts were also
impressed with the exercise

Hellfire missile and MK 46 tor-
pedo that were on display.
Just as the Cubs were finish-
ing up their tour of the static
display, the sound of rotors
turning could be heard from
outside.
The group proceeded outside
to HSL-48's balcony where
they watched a helicopter from
Mayport's reserve squadron,
HSL-60, taxi and then take off.
Watching the helicopter lift into
the air and fly away provided
quite a culmination for the day's
events.
In addition to the Cub Scouts'
visit being fun and educational,
it also helped the boys progress
toward their next rank in Cub
Scouts. The Vipers also ben-
efited from the visit, as it was
a rewarding experience for the
squadron personnel who made
the event possible as well as the
day's participants.

exercises," said Cmdr. Victor
Cooper, USS Pearl Harbor
(LSD 52) commanding officer.
"Our relationship building
events while in port, significant-
ly contributed to the fun experi-
enced while conducting the at-
sea events," Cooper added.
The exchange of military per-
sonnel between sister ships also
plays a large role in develop-
ing interoperability. Watching
a partner navy conduct live-fire
exercises and respond swiftly to
simulated surface and air threats

UNITAS 48-07 Atlantic Phase

helps participants from each of
the countries better understand
another navy's capability to
respond to a variety of situa-
tions.
"I would like to learn more
about their navies, both through
language and system capabili-
ties, because I think with such
a knowledge base, we will
become a stronger allied force,"
said Operations Specialist (SW)
2nd Class Marcus Drayden,
communication supervisor from
USS Mitscher (DDG 57).
After several days to become
familiar with each other, the
ships then split into two oppos-
ing forces to conduct a two-

day battle problem at sea as the
capstone event in the exercise.
Units were able to utilize all
aspects of their air, surface and
subsurface warfare training to
conduct multinational naval task
force operations in a multithreat
environment.
"Final battle problems are
always challenging, regard-
less of which side you are on,"
observed Cmdr. John Wilshusen,
Destroyer Squadron (DESRON)
40 chief staff officer. "They
allow you to put the combined
skills and experiences of your
team against the skills and expe-
riences of an equally talented
and dedicated opponent, with

no predetermined outcome."
"The Argentina Navy did a
fantastic job this year in chal-
lenging both sides with prob-
lems that made us think tacti-
cally and improved our skills
in the at-sea operating environ-
ment," Wilshusen added.
"It was a good experi-
ence to work with multina-
tional navies," said Operations
Specialist 3rd Class Damario
Norwood, bridge watch stander
aboard Pearl Harbor. "We built
good relationships between
Sailors."
United States participation
in UNITAS 48-07 consisted of
dock landing ship Pearl Harbor,

guided-missile destroyer
Mitscher, guided-missile frig-
ate USS Samuel B. Roberts
(FFG 58) and Chilean frigate
CS Latorre (FFG 14), under
the tactical command of Capt.
Randy Snyder, DESRON 40
commander.
The four ships also comprise
Task Group 40.0, conducting
Partnership of the Americas
(POA) 2007, a U.S. Naval
Forces Southern Command
deployment focused on enhanc-
ing relationships with regional
partner nations through a variety
of exercises and events at sea
and on shore throughout South
America and the Caribbean.

TORIS/TFOM Version 3 Training Moves Forward

By Wayne Woolweber
ATGMayport
Afloat Training Group
(ATG) Mayport hosted Captain
Salsman, Commander, ATG
Atlantic who recently addressed
Mayport crews on the sta-
tus of SHIPTRAIN and the
implementation of Training
and Operational Readiness
Information Services (TORIS)
/Training Figure of Merit
(TFOM) Version 3 (V3).
During the presentation, it
was highlighted that TORIS/
TFOM V3 implementation has
been delayed; however ATG
Mayport will be conducting
TORIS/TFOM V3 training.

Salsman reviewed the current
status of SHIPTRAIN, indicat-
ing that the goal is to ensure all
surface ships continually main-
tain and sustain their levels of
proficiency and certification.
With each upgrade to the
TORIS/TFOM software, new
functionalities are added and
feedback from fleet users is
incorporated. The key to success
with SHIPTRAIN is a steady
strain, focusing on performance
and proficiency.
Following Salsman's presen-
tation, ATG Mayport trainers
provided a short hands-on dem-
onstration in the TORIS/TFOM
lab.

During the lab period, the
new TORIS/TFOM toolbar
was reviewed, highlighting
the Continuous Certification
Requirement (CCR) tracker and
the incorporation of engineering
data.
During the TORIS/TFOM
V3 lab introduction, Wayne
Woolweber and Bill Sartin
demonstrated the advantage
of TORIS is that it enables
ships' training teams to effec-
tively identify where their lim-
ited training time and resourc-
es should be allocated to best
improve their combat readiness.
With TORIS / TFOM V3's
improved user interface and

improved functionality, ship-
board trainers will spend less
time in front of the computer
preparing for and recording
training metrics.
For example, TORIS/TFOM
V2 software took 10 steps to
activate a single data card for a
training event. Now trainers can
activate an entire Unit Level
Training Readiness Assessment
Certification (ULTRA-C) pack-
age in just three steps. That
translates into real man-hour
savings when trainers consider
that more than 120 data cards
are activated to support an
ULTRA-C.
Senior Chief Fire Controlman

Williams also reviewed the
TORIS/TFOM V3 new CCR
Tracker, which enables ships
to efficiently identify and keep
track of CCRs. CCRs drive war-
fare certifications as outlined
in the Surface Force Training
Manual (SFTM).
He and the other ATG
Mayport trainers encourage
ships to schedule training in
preparation for the final transi-
tion to TORIS/TFOM V3.
Ships can contact the follow-

ing points of contact at ATG
Mayport to schedule TORIS/
TFOM V3 Implementation

extension 3144; Woolweber at
270-6344 extension 3027 or
Williams at 270-6344 extension

Staff
Navy Appreciation by way
of the golf tournament set the
scene for a day of fun for more
than 70 servicemen hosted by
the Plantation at Ponte Vedra on
April 30.
"This is an annual tournament
that honors our Navy men and
women who keep us safe," said
Kathy Seabrook, who organized
the event with combat veteran
and "Spirit of Hope" recipient
Jim Gaff, who explained that
each year the invited military
players are made up of Sailors
who have recently served in
harms way.
"All of them have served in
the war zone," said Gaff. "This

is the fifth year of the tourna-
ment, and it is absolutely nec-
essary that all of us acknowl-
edge the sacrifice our men and
women in uniform contribute,
and their families that are left
behind."
After the tournament, players
sat and talked about the day's
events. Afterward, gift bags,
putters and drivers were given
to the winners of the tourna-
ment and more than 40 raffle
prizes were contributed by local
merchants.
"This event is second to
none, and very much appreci-
ated by all of us," said Lt. Rob
Wickman of HSL-40.

With three weeks of prepa-
ration, Taylor crewmembers
worked long and hard in an
effort to obtain high ratings on
their combat readiness and sus-
tainment levels.
Getting underway for several
days prior to ULTRA-S focused
the Sailors to the upcoming
inspection and to realize the
importance of the sustainment
evaluation.
With various members of
DESRON 24, DESRON 14 and
Afloat Training Group assessors
on board to evaluate, Taylor was
able to successfully complete
numerous training objectives
throughout all mission areas
with outstanding results.
Taylor's success is accred-
ited to all of the hard work put
forth by the numerous training
teams as well as the enthusiastic
involvement of the watchstand-
ers and supervisors.
Not only did Taylor improve
in its ratings compared to the
last training cycle ending last
year, but fluid coordination and
teamwork between all watchsta-
tions during integrated training
team environments were greatly
superior compared to years past.
As reported by ISIC,
"Taylor's ability to effectively
self assess was evident."
Taylor is warfare ready and
looking forward to a challeng-
ing submarine exercise later in
the month of May, moving onto
a rigorous maintenance peri-
od in preparation for its next
deployment.

Drug Resistant Skin Infections Common In Military

By Lt. Mike Arnold
NH Jacksonville Family Medicine
Residency Program
Skin infections have always
been common in the military,
where close quarters and chal-
lenging environments increase
the spread of bacteria. Recently
a new strain of common bac-
teria is causing an increase in
severe infections in otherwise
healthy people. These bacteria
are resistant to the antibiotics
commonly used for skin infec-
tions.
Two types of bacteria cause
the majority of skin infec-
tions, Staphylococcus and
Streptococcus, which are com-
monly known as Staph and
Strep. Staph infections tend
to be more invasive, and have
caused problems in hospitals
for years. In 1960, the anti-
biotic methicillin was intro-
duced because most Staph had
become resistant to penicillin.
After less than 10 years of use,

Does your child have a hard
time paying attention or day-
dream a lot? Does he not
seem to listen or become eas-
ily distracted from work or
play? Does he or she not fol-
low through on instructions or
forget things? Does your child
seem to be in constant motion
or talk too much? Does he or
she run, jump, and climb when
it's not appropriate? Can he or
she not sit still or play quietly?
Does your child act and speak
without thinking, or run into
the street without looking for
traffic? Does he or she have
trouble taking turns and call out
answers before the question is
complete, or interrupt others?
If these behaviors interfere with
making friends or doing well
in school, your child may have
Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD).
Children with ADHD have
trouble getting along with their
siblings, classmates, and neigh-
borhood children. They can't
learn because they can't pay
attention. They also can't con-
trol their impulses and may be
labeled "bad kids" or "accident
prone."
ADHD is a condition of the
brain that makes it difficult for
children to control behavior. It
is estimated that 4-12 percent
of school-aged children have
it. Boys are affected three times
more than girls.
Children with ADHD have
symptoms of inattention, hyper-
activity or both. Just because
your child is showing these
symptoms does not mean they
have ADHD. Only your physi-
cian can determine if your child
has ADHD using input from
you and your child's teachers. It
is difficult to diagnose children

tects against infection from four
strains of the human papilloma
virus. Two of these strains,
HPV-16 and HPV-18, account
for about 70 percent of cervical
cancers. The other two strains
covered by the vaccine, HPV-6
and HPV-11, account for about
90 percent of genital warts. In
clinical trials, the vaccine has
been shown to offer 100 percent
protection against the develop-
ment of cervical pre-cancer and
genital warts caused by the HPV
strains covered by the vaccine,
with few or no side effects.
The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention's
(CDC) Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices
(ACIP), recommends that the
vaccine be routinely given to
girls when they are 11-12 years
old. The ACIP recommenda-
tion also allows for vaccination
of girls beginning at 9 years
old as well as vaccination of
girls and women 13-26 years
old. Ideally, the vaccine should
be administered before onset
of sexual activity (i.e., before
women are exposed to the
viruses), but females who are

sexually active should still be
vaccinated. In clinical trials,
individuals with current or past
infection with one or more vac-
cine-related HPV strains prior to
vaccination were protected from
disease caused by the remain-
ing vaccine HPV types. This
is because most people are not
.infected with all four types of
'HPV contained in the vaccine.

cillin. These bacteria were
named Methicillin Resistant
Staphylococcus Aureus or
MRSA ("murr-sah"). The acro-
nym MRSA is still used for this
bacteria, although it is resistant
to multiple antibiotics.
In the early 1990s, a case of
MRSA was reported in a per-
son who had no contact with
a hospital, and since then
what is known as "community
acquired" MRSA has spread to
every continent. While hos-
pital MRSA generally infects
people who are sick, the com-
munity acquired organism
tends to infect healthy people.
The infection tends to be more
severe and spread faster than
other bacteria. Because of its
resistance, the infection can get
worse when being treated with
commonly used antibiotics.
Active duty members are at
an increased risk for MRSA

than 2 years. Any cut or scrape
on the skin, including athletes
foot or other fungal infection
increases the risk. Crowded
conditions and poor hygiene
increase the spread of the infec-
tion.
A MRSA infection usually
starts as a tender red bump in
the skin. The bump is often
dark red or purple at its bor-
der and feels harder than the
surrounding skin. The infec-
tion can look like a spider bite.
Most people who go to the
doctor complaining of a spider
bite are found to have a MRSA
infection.
Because MRSA infections
can worsen rapidly, it is impor-
tant to seek medical attention
early. For a small red area, it
may be possible to use antibi-
otic creams to control the infec-
tion. There are antibiotic pills
that effectively treat a MRSA

Child Have AD/HD?

younger than age 6 because
many normal preschool chil-
dren have some ADHD symp-
toms at various times. It is also
difficult to diagnose teenagers.
To confirm ADHD, behaviors
listed above must occur in more
than one setting (home, school,
social settings), and be more
severe than in other children the
same age.
Other conditions commonly
occur along with ADHD. Your
physician will look for depres-
sion, anxiety, and learning dis-
orders. It is important to not
miss these conditions, but diag-
nosing them takes time. A pedi-
atric psychologist or psychiatrist
may get involved to help.
Your doctor will ask about
family history concerning
ADHD, depression and anxiety.
Since ADHD runs in families,
you may be surprised to find
out that you yourself or your
spouse have it. Your child's
school should be involved to see
if they exhibit symptoms. The
goal is to get information from
multiple settings since diagno-
sis depends on seeing ADHD
traits in multiple settings. At a
minimum, an ADHD workup
should include a questionnaire
for parents and teachers.
Once ADHD is diagnosed,
most children do very well with
treatment. ADHD cannot be
cured but it can be managed,
and many people learn cop-
ing strategies as they grow into
adulthood. Treatment should
include most of the following:
1. Education about ADHD;
2. Collaboration between
doctors, parents, teachers, care-
givers, other healthcare pro-
fessionals and the child;
3. Medication;
4. Behavior therapy;
5. Parenting training;
6. Individual and family
counseling.

To be effective, Gardasil must
be given in three doses over six
months. The second dose is
given two months after the first
and the third dose six months
after the first. It's not clear
yet, however, whether women
receiving the vaccine will have
lifelong immunity. The protec-
tive effects of the vaccine are
expected to last a minimum of
4.5 years after the initial vac-
cine.
As safe and effective as it
appears to be, the vaccine will
probably take years to have
an impact on cervical cancer.
Since the current vaccines will
not protect against all the HPV
strains that can cause cervi-
cal cancer, it will be important
for women to continue to seek
regular Pap smear screening,
even after getting the vaccine.
Women must also keep in mind
that HPV is a sexually trans-
mitted virus and practicing safe
sex or abstaining from having
multiple partners also play an
important role in prevention.
At this time, another HPV vac-
cine called Cervarix is on the
horizon, which also targets the

Don't lose heart! It may take
some time to find the ideal
medication and counselor for
your child. It will take time to
determine if your child has con-
ditions like depression, anxi-
ety or learning disabilities. All
medications have side effects.
Common side effects are
decreased appetite, weight loss,
sleep problems, headaches, jit-
teriness, social withdrawal and
stomachaches. Less common
side effects are dry mouth, diz-
ziness, increased activity, bad
mood, or tics as the medication
wears off.
To help your child control
his behavior, have a predictable
daily schedule, cut out distrac-
tions (like turn off the TV dur-
ing homework), organize your
house, reward positive behavior,
and help your child stay on task.
Limit choices. Find activities
where your child can succeed.
Use calm discipline. Admittedly,
these things are easier said than
done.
Remember you need to take
care of yourself as well as your
child. Parenting a child with
ADHD can be very tiring and
frustrating. It's common to feel
like you can't take it any more.
There are parent training and
support groups made up of other
families dealing with ADHD
that can help. Seek the help of
a counselor if you feel over-
whelmed or hopeless. Do your
own research. An excellent and
reliable website for informa-
tion on ADHD can be found at
http://medlineplus.gov/. Don't
despair! Your pediatrician or
family physician is there to
help!

of the virus. Ongoing labo-
ratory research is focused on
the development of HPV vac-

against a broader range of HPV

vaccine should prove a worthy
addition to the cause of fighting
cancer.

an abscess, it should be cut

other signs of severe infection
are present then hospitalization
may be required.
We all carry bacteria on
our bodies, and some people
carry MRSA without having
an infection. MRSA tends to
live inside the nose and nasal
swabs are used to diagnose car-
riers. Approximately one in 200
Americans carries MRSA, but
carriers are at least six times
as frequent within the active
duty military. People who carry
MRSA are seven times as likely
to have skin infections, but they
can also spread the infection to
others without getting infect-
ed themselves. Anyone with
a MRSA infection should be
checked to see if they are a car-
rier. All carriers can be treated
with antibiotic nasal ointments
and antibiotic body washes.

cine than simply treating it.
Simple things can reduce the
spread of an infection, includ-
ing:
*Don't share towels, razors,
brushes or bars of soap. Use
liquid body washes if possible.
*Shower as soon as possible
after any sport that involves
skin to skin contact. Use show-
er shoes if in a public shower.
*Any cut or scrape should
be well cleaned, covered with
an antibiotic ointment and kept
covered until it heals.
*Athlete's foot and other fun-
gal infections should be treated
as soon as discovered.
*Clean shared athletic equip-
ment with diluted bleach solu-
tion between users. In the base
gym, use the available disinfec-
tant wipes.
*Wash hands or use alcohol
based antibiotic cleansers prior
to picking up children, especial-

*Anyone with a skin infection
should not play contact sports
until medically cleared.
Common skin infections have
become more serious due to the
spread of MRSA. These infec-
tions spread rapidly and can
be severe if not treated. Any
new tender red bump should
be brought to medical atten-
tion early to prevent a severe
skin infection. Any spider bite
should be treated as MRSA.
The spread of these infections
can be minimized by following
a few simple guidelines.
