Mayport Council Navy League
It has been 20 years since the
attack of USS Stark (FFG 31)
while on patrol in the south-
ern Persian Gulf. Thirty-seven
crewmembers of the Mayport-
based ship died in the attack. On
May 17, they will be remem-
bered again.
The 20th annual memorial
service for USS Stark will be
held at Naval Station Mayport's
Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m. on
May 17.

On May 17, 1987, 37 USS
Stark Sailors were killed when
two missiles struck the ship
without warning after 9 p.m.,
while the ship was on patrol in
the southern Persian Gulf. One
missile exploded, causing tre-
mendous damage and immedi-
ate fires in the forward part of
the ship. Fuel from the second
missile intensified the fires,
and the crew fought the inferno
through the night and the next
day. Aided by equipment and
fire fighting teams from other

Navy ships, the crew succeeded
in saving the ship, but the cost
was heavy.
Restored and returned to
service in 1988, Stark won
two Battle 'E' awards as best
ship in the squadron. After the
ship was decommissioned in
1999, the Naval Order of the
United States and Naval Station
Mayport partnered to preserve
the observance of this tragic
incident that wrought so much
misery for the crew members
and their families.

The service will feature
accounts of some of the events
that occurred following the
attack, both aboard the ship
and here in Mayport, from crew
and volunteers and staff who
worked to provide information
and support services to the fam-
ilies of crew members.
Following the service, there
will be a reception hosted by
the Naval Order of the United
States and the Mayport Council
Navy League at the CPO Club.
Several members of the

1987 crew of Stark will attend
the service and are planning
to hold a reunion in Mayport
during the weekend. The fol-
lowing link provides further
information: http://groups.
msn.com/ussstark/_homepage.
msnw?pgmarket=en-us.
Former crew and family
members seeking information
about the service are encour-
aged to contact starkmemorial@
earthlink.net for further infor-
mation.

Sea Turtles

Season
From NSMayport Security
Naval Station Mayport beach-
es are a great place to live and
visit for both people and endan-
gered species of sea turtles.
It is just a little tougher to find
a good place to "nest" if you are
an endangered sea turtle.
Turtle nesting takes place
from now through Oct. 31.
However, their safety depends
on you. Hatchlings find their
way to the sea by light clues,
such as brightness. They
instinctively crawl towards the
brightest light and become dis-
oriented if artificial lights are
shining from behind.
Artificial light from beach-
front homes, streetlights or even
flashlights can attract the hatch-
lings away from the safety of
the water and lead them to their
deaths.
Lights and people disorientate
female turtles coming ashore to
nest. If one is sighted coming
ashore, contact the base Wildlife
officer and remain clear, stay
quiet, do not use a light source
and don't allow anyone near her
to disturb her nesting.
How can you help? By sim-
ply keeping our beaches as dark
and quiet as possible throughout
the nesting period. Consider the
following suggestions:
*Turn off all unnecessary
lights and do not use flashlights
without a red lenses.

Begins
*Reposition the source of any
light fixture so it is not visible
from the beach.
*Use motion detectors on out-
side lights for security purposes.
*Place timers on lights so they
are off by 10 p.m.
*Close all Navy Lodge, BOQ
and house curtains at sunset that
face the beach.
And Remember:
*All special functions con-
ducted on Naval Station
Mayport beach areas during
nesting season must be cleared
through the Wildlife officer
first.
*Restrict leaving large holes
and rutting on the beach area.
*All dogs on the beach must
be on a leash at all times.
*Never touch a nesting
female or emerging hatchlings.
These actions are a violation of
federal and state laws. Never
try to push a live sea turtle back
into the water. If the turtle is out
of the water and on the beach,
keep the shell wet with a damp
towel or sprinkle water over it.
For more information, or if
you sight an unmarked nest,
hatchling or stranded sea tur-
tles, contact the NS Mayport
Wildlife Office immediately at
219-2178. Call the Beaches Sea
Turtle Patrol at 613-6081 for all
Jacksonville area beaches or the
Florida Marine Patrol at 270-
2500.

NMCRS Active Duty Fund

Drive Surpasses $275,000

Z-Zi/ WW J :so:eT:8 /-Ooze8AeL,\

NOSA Gives Back
-m-mmm rAmmI I -

Naval Officer's Spouse's
Association (NOSA) donates
$3,750 to NMCRS. Each year
NOSA has a "Time and Talent
Night" to raise funds to help
Navy Families. As a result of
their annual fund raiser they
were able to donate funds to
NMCRS, USO and Compass.
Their $3,750 to NMCRS put the
total raised during this year's
2007 Active Duty Fund Drive
to just over $275,000. Bill
Kennedy, the Director, could
not have been more pleased.
Destroyer Squadron Fourteen
(DESRON 14), led by Lt.
Cmdr. Perry and Senior Chief
Cunningham, were the senior
coordinators for this year's fund
drive. Through their tremen-
dous efforts and the outstand-
ing support of all the volunteer

coordinators, the fund drive was
extremely successful.
Because of the dedicated
hard work of the key personnel
among the ships, the squadrons
and the tenet commands the
Base easily exceeded its goal of
$245,000. Bill Kennedy, how-
ever, knew from past experience
that an overall goal of $275,000
was very possible. Many, many
commands exceeded 100 per-
cent of goal and one ship USS
Carney exceeded 250 percent
of goal.
At the end of April the final
report from DESRON 14 had
the total at just over $272,000.
On May 1, NOSA invited Bill
Kennedy to attend their month-
ly meeting and presented him
with a check that put the 2007
NMCRS Fund Drive over the

top. WOW! What a wonderful
and generous donation from a
fantastic organization.
To all who participated, to all
who gave of their time and tal-
ent, to all who donated funds
"Thank You, Thank You"! We
could not have done it without
your superb support and hard
work. Bravo Zulu! The real
winners are the families who
face financial emergencies
and because of your efforts,
NMCRS will be able to assist
them in their time of need.
It is extremely gratifying as
Director to drive on this Base
each day knowing so well that
so many care about helping
those in need. THANK YOU.
YOU ARE THE GREATEST!

Preparation Vital For

2007 Hurricane Season

From National Oceanic andAtmospher-
ic Administration
Hurricane season is looming
around the comer, and a fam-
ily action plan can be the best
way to keep you and your fam-
ily safe.
Practicing the plan helps your
family stay prepared in case of
severe weather. Begin by dis-
cussing the different types of
hazards of your home from dif-
ferent types of weather. Wind,
flooding, tornadoes and storm
surge are the main types of haz-
ards.
Find out if your home is in
any type of evacuation zone,
especially for storm surge. If
your home is in an evacuation
zone, make sure you know how
to reach a safe shelter in your
area.
A hurricane plan should be in
place whether your home is in
an evacuation zone, or not.
Locate the safest rooms or
places in your house for each
hazard. Don't forget to consid-
er that the safest place may not
be in your house, but in your
community. Determine escape
routes from your home and
make sure to have a designated
meeting area outside.
If you have pets, make a
plan for where to keep them, as
many hurricane shelters do not
accept pets.
Emergency supplies may be
all you have during bad weath-
er, so keep a disaster supply kit
with food and basic living items
for 3-7 days.
Have an out-of-state contact
designated so everyone has the
same point of contact. Taking

this precaution may make the
difference in finding separated
family members.
Have an NOAA weather radio
for official, real-time weather
information in your emergency
kit. This is a commercial-free,
24-hour broadcast that pro-
vides critical life-saving weath-
er information when properly
placed within your home.
An NWR should be placed
near a window and away from
metal wall studs. It may require
a small external antenna.
NWRs are available at electron-
ic stores.
Besides keeping your family
safe, your home and property
should also be a priority.
Consider installing a roof
covering that is rated for hur-
ricane force winds. Board win-
dows and brace doors to protect
the interior of your home.
If you live in an especially
vulnerable area, such as the
coastline, consider install-
ing permanent storm shutters
for your windows and doors.
Check the caulking and weather
stripping on your windows and
doors to protect from flooding.
Tie down fixtures in your
yard and remove any items that
may become wind-borne debris
and ask your neighbors to do
the same.
Remove gravel/rock land-
scaping material and replace
with fire treated, shredded bark
to reduce damage.
These tips and more can be
found through the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration at www.nhc.
noaa.gov, and the Federal

COMDESRON 24
Commander Destroyer
Squadron 24 hosted the Second

objective is to provide another
venue to increase ASW train-
ing opportunity in the Southeast
Region.
Ten teams participated in the
regional event, open to all sur-
face ship and helicopter, and
P3 commands in Naval Station
Mayport and Naval Air Station
Jacksonville and SSBN sub-
marine crews from Kings Bay.
During the tournament, teams
were evaluated on their tactical
knowledge in the areas of coor-
dinated ASW operations, sensor

employment, and battle space
management.
Close evaluation of the ships
ASW teams gives the partici-
pants an adequate assessment
of their tactical evaluators and
sonar operators. The tourna-
ment's competitiveness esca-
lates the tactical forethought
and warfighter enthusiasm,
transitioning our operators into
battle space planners.
Congratulations
to the USS

the coveted "Golden Ballbat"
trophy on May 3.
As coordinators of both
the ASW tournament series
and the SEASWITI exercise
series (Southeastern ASW
Integrated Training Initiative),
COMDESRON 24 will continue
to offer effective training ven-
ues for all ASW platforms. All
commands are invited to par-
ticipate in future tournaments
and exercises.

HSL-44 'Predators' Deployment Passes Half Mark

By Lt. Brian Klidies
HSL-44 Detachment One
HSL-44 Detachment One
"Predators" marked the halfway
point of its deployment with
USS Vella Gulf (CG-72) as part
of Bataan ESG in support of
the Global War on Terrorism on
April 4.
The first half of deployment
has presented the Predators with
a wide variety of experiences.
Detachment One has flown
more than 366 hours in support
of missions such as oil plat-
form defense in the Northern
Arabian Gulf and plane guard
for the French aircraft carrier,
Charles De Gaulle, in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom.
The Predators also partici-
pated in a nine helicopter for-
mation flight comprised of five
different countries during the
Pakistani exercise AMAN '07.
The Predators are a two-heli-
copter detachment comprised of
six pilots, three aircrewmen and
17 aviation maintenance person-
nel. They are led by Officer-in-
Charge Lt. Cmdr. Bill Reagan,
Maintenance Officer Lt. Jarrod
Day and Operations Officer Lt.
Jarod Trujillo.
The detachments '
Administrative, Assistance
Operations, and Training offi-
cer billets are held by Lt. Brian
Klidies, Lt. Bob Kelly and Lt.
Brian Rhodes. AWl Aaron
Cook, AW2 Habran Lara, and
AW2 Shawn Tetreault serve
as the detachment's Sensor
Operators. The Detachment One
maintenance team is led by Lt.
Day, AEC Ted Vaughn and AE1
Norman Kennedy.
The Predators have completed

tions and several major calendar
inspections on Magnum 455
and 456.
Also, many man hours have
been spent on unscheduled
maintenance, and daily and
turnaround inspections. The
team's efficiency is evident with
the detachment's 97 percent
mission completion rate.
This top-notch group of main-
tenance personnel include: ATI

Harlan Kelbaugh, AMI John
Rutten, AO1 Kendric Greely,
AD2 Randy Williams, AD2
Kendall Hasset, AT2 Caleb
Gilcrease, AM2 Kevin Beck,
AZ2 Aaron Scott, AD3 Ramesh
Thapa, AE3 Thai Pham, AM3
Neal Newton, AT3 Elliot Gibbs,
AEAN Ryan Ventaluth, AZAN
Christopher Worndle and
AOAN Paul Rambish.
Detachment One has enjoyed

three ports since departing
Mayport on Jan. 3.
The first was a Theater
Security Cooperation (TSC)
event with the Moroccan Navy
in Agadir, Morocco.
During the port visit, there
were several social engage-
ments involving Vella Gulf, the
Moroccan Navy, and local gov-
ernment officials.
Officers from both Navies

enjoyed a reception at the elo-
quently decorated Moroccan
Naval Officer's Club. The
fare was unique and tasty.
The ship's crew enjoyed local
Moroccan culture, shopping,
and cuisine throughout the city.
In the spirit of a TSC event,
many Sailors from Vella Gulf
participated in a commu-
nity relations project where
they repainted the inside of a

Moroccan Orphanage.
After the port call, Vella Gulf
participated in a day long exer-
cise of seamanship drills with
the Moroccan Navy.
Following Morocco, the
Predators next port was a brief
stop for fuel in Souda Bay,
Crete. Although the ship was
there for less than 24 hours, the
crew had a chance to get off
the ship, call loved ones, and
enjoy a cookout with music and
karaoke.
Detachment One was also
happy to spend time with
members of their sister detach-
ment, HSL-44 Detachment Six
"Woodpeckers" on board USS
Underwood (FFG 36).
After leaving Crete and
entering into the 5th fleet, the
Predators latest port stop was in
Bahrain. The port visit provided
an opportunity for great shop-
ping and rest and relaxation.
Little did the group know that
the stop in Bahrain would be
their last port for Vella Gulf and
Detachment One for 60 days.
Vella Gulf held a steel beach
picnic to celebrate the half-
way point of deployment and
more than 45 consecutive days
at sea. The crew was given the
opportunity to consume two
beers. The picnic was a wel-
come break from the monotony
of operations in the Northern
Arabian Sea.
While everyone is happy
to have reached the halfway
mark, the Predators are ready
to carry on with the mission.
The Predators and sailors of
Vella Gulf look forward to the
remainder of cruise, more port
visits, and finally their return
home to families and friends.

UNITAS 48-07 Begins In Argentina

By MC2(SW)
Alexia M. Riveracorrea
COMDESRON 40
UNITAS 48-07, a multi-
national exercise designed
to increase interoperabil-
ity of navies in the Americas,
began off the coast of Central
Argentina May 3.
"This is an excellent opportu-
nity for partner nations to oper-
ate as a coalition task group,"
said Lt. Cmdr. Donald Voebel,
Destroyer Squadron 40 oper-
ations officer. "Any time we
can come together and execute
precise military maneuvers and
tactics is beneficial to meeting
the CNO's vision of a 1,000
ship Navy."
Prior to the multinational
force getting underway, there
were several events in Puerto
Belgrano to prepare the assem-
bled forces for at-sea operations.
Along with their exercise prepa-
rations, US Sailors took advan-
tage of opportunities to deliver
Project Handclasp material to a
local charity and participate in
a wreath-laying ceremony com-
memorating the 25th anniversary
of the loss of Argentine ship
ARA General Belgrano.

Phase, hosted this year by
Argentina, brings together
nations with common inter-
ests in the Americas and also
includes Brazil, Chile, Spain
and the United States. UNITAS,
now in its 48th consecutive
year, strengthens relationships
with partner nations through
at sea operations under vari-
ous maritime scenarios. These
exercises are conducted annual-
ly in Atlantic and Pacific waters
around South America.
"I strongly believe that
navy exercises like UNITAS
have built healthy, close rela-
tionships between the navies
and countries in this region,"
said Argentina Surface Fleet
Commander Adm. Antonio
Torres. "They reinforce confi-
dence and understanding. They
promote friendly relations."
Members of the U.S. Coast
Guard international training
division trained approximately
85 Sailors from all participat-
ing countries in visit, boarding,
search and seizure (VBSS) tech-
niques, which helps standard-
ize procedures and emphasize
safety.
"It is a great opportunity to
interact with Sailors from dif-

ferent countries and help the
community at the same time. I
feel proud to be able to cooper-
ate in these types of projects,"
said Damage Controlman 2nd
Class (SW) Jorge Zuniga.
Along with navies from the
Americas, Spain is also partici-
pating UNITAS Atlantic phase
this year.
"Spain's presence in this exer-
cise shows us the importance of
what we are doing," said Torres.
"They come from the other side
of the Atlantic Ocean to be part
of that unity we show to the

Partnership Of The Americas

Completes A Successful

Port Visit in Buenos Aires

By MC2 (SW)
Alexia M. Riveracorrea
COMDESRON 40
Task Group 40.0 concluded
an action-packed port visit
April 30, where the ships' crews
participated in diverse events
ashore, including delivery of
Project Handclasp materials in
support of Partnership of the
Americas (POA) 2007.
Project Handclasp items
delivered included an ambu-
lance for a regional fire district
and medical supplies, sew-
ing machines, food and medi-
cal supplies for Stella Marris,
the Argentine Navy equivalent
to Navy Relief Society of the
United States, and the Red
Cross of Argentina.
"We are proud to present an
ambulance to the Association
of Volunteer Fire Fighters of
Las Parejas, Santa Fe. This
ambulance was donated by
The Wilmette, Illinois Fire
Department because of efforts
from Firefighter and Paramedic
Jamie Johnson after a visit to
Las Parejas in 2004," said Capt.
Randy Snyder, Commander
Destroyer Squadron Four Zero.
Following a short press con-
ference, USS Pearl Harbor
(LSD 52) Sailors provided
guided tours to a youth group

from Argentina accompanied by
local television and print news
representatives.
Other major events during
the visit included a reception
on board Pearl Harbor. U.S.
Ambassador to Argentina, Mr.
Earl Wayne and Vice Chief of
Naval Operations of Argentina,
Admiral Benito Rotolo were
among the more than 300 peo-
ple in attendance.
"Tonight we come togeth-
er to celebrate the arrival of
Partnership of the Americas par-
ticipants in Buenos Aires. With
this event we honor the coop-
eration between our countries
and throughout the region," said
Snyder.
During the event, food and
drinks were provided by Pearl
Harbor Sailors while multina-
tional guests discussed their
role in upcoming exercises and
UNITAS.
According to Culinary
Specialist 1st Class (SW)
Roberto Yngson, food coordi-
nator, the reception was a com-
plete success, and showcased
the pride and professionalism of
his culinary team.
"Having the Argentina guests
onboard is a great opportunity
for us as U.S. ambassadors to
show what we are capable of,"

said Yngson.
The reception was an ideal
opportunity to bring nations
together and foster their rela-
tionships.
"We are honored to be here
in Argentina and look forward
to working with the Navy, at
UNITAS," said Snyder.
With the formal events com-
plete Sailors used the rest of the
visit to tour the city and its his-
torical places, shop and inter-
act with Sailors from different
ships.
"The city tour was educa-
tional; we had the chance to
see the Casa Rosada which is
the President's residency. We
learned about Buenos Aires his-
tory. It was a great tour," said
Yngson.
POA Task Group 40.0 con-
sists of amphibious dock land-
ing ship USS Pearl Harbor
(LSD 52), guided missile
destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG
57), guided missile frigate
USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG

Gettysburg Gives Life

By Ensign
Andrew Bonderud
USS Gettysburg PAO
Last week, Sailors from USS
Gettysburg (CG 64) and the
American Red Cross teamed up
in an effort to save lives.
For more than five hours on
May 1, the Red Cross parked
their Blood Mobile on the
pier in front of the ship, as
Gettysburg Sailors donated their
blood, one pint at a time.
By the end of the day, the
blood drive had been an over-
whelming success. In fact,
throughout the day, there were
few moments when people were
not lined up, waiting to donate
their blood. More than 40
Sailors in all contributed.
Interior Communications
Electrician 3rd Class (SW)
Glenn Cobb was eager to par-
ticipate in the blood drive.
"I love to donate blood
because my blood type is 0
negative," he said. "I give it
whenever I can."
While there is a substantial
need for citizens of all blood
types to donate blood, there is

(RIE).
RIE is aimed at reducing
the time and effort required to

SERMC Sailors use to perform
ship maintenance and repairs.
The RIE team was comprised
of Subject Matter Experts

The team focused their efforts
on the reduction of both Flow

rescue of 20 refugees. During
his command, Boone earned
the Battle Efficiency Award and
the NATO Medal. Dalton's next
assignment is to the Navy's
newest and largest carrier, USS

from the start of the FWP

to the end of the process, and

Through the use of Lean pro-

the touch Time of two hours
were reduced to 22 hours and

Two NH JAX Nurses

Honored As Great 100

Nurses Of N.E. Florida

By Marsha Childs
NH JAX Marketing
It is rare to find that outstand-
ing nurse whose knowledge,
skill, compassion and courage
have had a profound impact
in the lives of others. Naval
Hospital Jacksonville is blessed
with many such nurses and two
are being honored for their posi-
tive contributions to the nurs-
ing profession. Lt. Accursia
Baldassano and Calinica "Lynn"
Caudilla are among northeast
Florida's Great 100 Nurses for
2007.
Lt. Accursia Baldassano, a
certified emergency and adult
critical care nurse, has served
on active duty since 1992. As
the Endoscopy Clinic Division
Officer, she oversees the day-to-
day operations of the clinic and
provides care for patients during
their ambulatory procedures.
While serving at Naval
Hospital Jacksonville, she co-
created the Introduction to
En Route Care Course which
teaches deploying nurses and
hospital corpsmen how to pre-
pare patients for air transport.
The course covers aero-medical
evacuation and in-flight care.
Baldassano said, "The course
teaches nurses and corpsmen
how to package the patient for
flight and the care they might
expect to provide during trans-
port. For some critically ill
patients we may use body bags
nicknamed 'hot pockets' with
holes cut at various locations
to allow access to the patient
and their I.V. lines or tubes.
This method helps maintain
the patient's body temperature,
reduces the potential for lines
becoming tangled or dislodged
and provides protection from
sand and debris kicked up by
rotors. The course also covers
in-flight physiology, the effects
of altitude on the body, and even
how to approach a helicopter."
Baldassano trained through
the Air Force Flight Nurse
Course and served as one of
two flight nurses while assigned
to Diego Garcia, an island in the
Indian Ocean where the U.S.
has a military base.
As a prior Hospital Corpsman,
she viewed a nursing career
as an opportunity to share her
unique experiences with oth-
ers. Baldassano explained, "I
went into Navy nursing to help
develop other nurses and corps-

Lt. Accursia Baldassano
men and teach them skills that
will directly impact Sailors and
Marines on the frontline."
As a member of the Casualty
Receiving Treatment Ship
Team 8 (CRTS-8), Baldassano
deployed in August 2005 on
the USS Bataan for 19 days
to aid hurricane victims. She
was assigned to a detachment at
NAS Belchase in New Orleans
and assisted Air Force person-
nel to stand up a field hospital.
Calinica "Lynn" Caudilla
is another outstanding nurse
assigned to Naval Hospital
Jacksonville. When the tele-
phone rings in the Nurse Call
Center, she is one of several
professional and caring reg-
istered nurses who is ready
to help military families with
health-related information and
advice. She uses her own judg-
ment to deal with unusual situ-
ations and oftentimes provides
reassurance to patients who just
need someone to listen.
As an active community lead-
er, Caudilla served as the audi-
tor for the Philippine Nurses
Association of N.E. Florida
from 2004 to 2006.
She explained, "We created
the Legacy of Care Clinic a
free clinic that serves the poor-
est patients. We are governed
by the Department of Health
and we work very closely with
the We Care Program. The clin-
ic is located in Arlington and is
open the second Saturday each
month. All of our physician
volunteers are members of the
Philippine Medical Society of
N.E. Florida.
The organization's mission is
to provide nursing education,
conduct research and support
community service. She is the
2008 President Elect for the
association with more than 300

Calinica "Lynn" Caudilla
members.
In 2006, Caudilla chaired
the first ever Filipino Seniors
Workshop-a free elderly
outreach program to provide
information about Medicare
and Medicaid and to promote
camaraderie for more than 100
attendees. Due to its success,
the program was opened to
the public in March 2007 with
more than 200 seniors attend-
ing. She noted, "This was the
most meaningful event I have
ever done."
For three weeks in May,
Caudilla will travel to the
Republic of the Philippines to
assist with the Gift of Smile
sponsored by the Philippine
Medical Society of N.E. Fl.
The program offers free cleft lip
and palate surgical repairs. She
will teach Basic Life Support
to more than 100 medical and
nursing students.
The Great 100 Nurses of
Northeast Florida 2007 banquet
and award ceremony honor-
ing Baldassano, Caudilla and
other outstanding nurses for
their exemplary performance
as nursing professionals will be
Saturday, May 12, at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel in downtown
Jacksonville.

Navy Vet, Aircraft Artist

Gives B-25B 'Nose Job'

By MCSN Eric J. Cutright
Fleet Public,. Center Detachment
Hawaii
Hal Olsen, a former Aviation
Mechanic 1st Class during
World War II and professional
aircraft nose artist, was greeted
as a special guest April 18 at
the Pacific Aviation Museum
on Pearl Harbor's historic Ford
Island.
Olsen's unique art work
emblazoned a B-25B bomber
located at the Pacific Aviation
Museum and commemorated
the historic aircraft's use on the
65th anniversary of the April
18, 1942, Doolittle Raid on
Tokyo Bay.
His painting consisted of the
"Ruptured Duck," a cartoon that
closely resembles the Disney
character Donald Duck. The
"Ruptured Duck" wears radio
headphones and is pictured
above crossed crutches.
It took Olsen a little more
than four hours to finish the air-
craft's nose, but the final prod-
uct was well received by the
museum's guests and staff.
Before the museum opened
its doors to the public, Pacific
Aviation Museum curator, Mike
Wilson, made some phone calls
to the famous aircraft nose art-
ist.
The museum had a B-25B
bomber flown by Army 2nd Lt.
Ted Lawson who was part of the
famous "Doolittle's Raiders,"
and the seventh plane to take
off from USS Hornet (CV 8) for
the bombing raid on Tokyo.
Wilson felt the exhibit would
need a special touch to show-
case the authenticity of the his-
toric warplane.
Olsen willingly agreed
to the task at hand and the
Albuquerque, N.M., resident
flew out to Hawaii to a wel-
coming reception held by the
museum.
"It's a feeling of great fulfill-
ment and a great pleasure of
having been involved in this
project since the inception,"

Serves All Navy's Ships

By MC2(SW/AW)
Leslie Tomaino
Fleet Public,; i Center Atlantic
Many shipboard Sailors may
be asking themselves "Where
have all the personnelman
gone?"
For an answer, one only needs
to look within a newly renovat-
ed warehouse one block off Pier
10 at Naval Station Norfolk.
The Personnel Support
Detachment (PSD) Afloat
Atlantic (LANT), now well
established under the Personnel
Administrative Support Systems
(PASS) network, is the first to
implement the afloat concept.
In addition to Norfolk there
are PSD Afloat detachments in
Charleston, S.C.; San Diego;
Sasebo, Japan; Yokosuka,
Japan; Everett, Wash.; Pearl

Harbor; and Mayport, Fla. The
detachments handle all U.S.
Navy shipboard commands
worldwide.
"The changes support the
chief of naval operation's
Optimal Manning Initiative, and
by supporting the ships we are
reducing our manning afloat.
[We're] leaving the warfight-
ers on the ships and getting the
support functions off the ships."
said Lt. Cmdr. Bryant Kohut,
officer in charge for PSD Afloat
LANT.
PSD Afloat LANT cur-
rently services all 49 of the
Mid-Atlantic Region ships at
Norfolk and Little Creek except
for the aircraft carriers, which
are expected to be added incre-
mentally starting in 2008. They
also provide services for four

destroyer squadrons and one
amphibious squadron. This
means at the present time there
are more than 21,000 records
being handled by a staff of 165
personnelmen and two yeomen
who provide all pay and service
record needs.
One of the ways that the PSD
has brought better customer
service is by utilizing the team
concept.
"Our team members work
together, each bringing their
own prior experiences and
skill sets to the team, making
us more knowledgeable in our
rating and providing a higher
quality service to the fleet," said
Personnelman 2nd Class Billy
Spillers, PSD Afloat LANT.

CNRC Looking For Recruiters

By MC2(SW/AW)
Gabriel Owens
Navy Recruiting Command Public

Commander, Navy Recruiting
Command is looking to "plus
up" its recruiting force from
4,000 to 5,000 quality Sailors
by the end of FY10.
The need to increase the
number of quality Sailors enter-
ing the Navy coupled with a
decreasing pool of qualified
candidates requires recruiters
to spend more time trying to
recruit prospects who wouldn't
ordinarily lean toward military
service.
"The Navy has a very high
quality recruiting force today,
and we intend to sustain our
commitment to quality," said
Rear Adm. Joe Kilkenny,
CNRC.
"Remaining an employer of
choice in the challenging 21st
century marketplace is a critical
element in our plan to success-
fully recruit and retain the best
young people our nation has to
offer."
Navy recruiters spend a sig-
:nificant amount of time reach-

ing out to a smaller group of
potential recruits. The addition
of more recruiters to the force
will help ensure a solid recruit-
ing effort to meet the mission
growth as they continue to seek
out qualified applicants.
More recruiters will also help
create Navy awareness in areas
with little or no Navy footprint.
"We need to have more
Sailors out in Middle America
and other areas just to ensure
people understand what the
Navy is all about. We have all
the technology we need, but
recruiting takes two human
beings sitting down and having
a face-to-face conversation,"
said Kilkenny. "So, as our goal
goes up we want to make sure
we have the right people out
there."
While recruiting can be a
challenging career, the ben-
efits can be very rewarding.
Recruiters can look forward to
special duty assignment pay,
meritorious promotions, the
possibility of getting stationed
in or near their hometown, and
the being able to select choice
of coast on the following tour.

Additionally, successful recruit-
ing tours can be favorably
looked on in selection boards,
particularly for those Sailors
looking to make chief petty
officer.
"Recruiting duty by any mea-
sure is demanding," said Patrick
Donahue, Deputy, CNRC.
"Because the process of mak-
ing new Sailors begins with the
Sailor assigned to recruiting
duty, the stakes are high for the
future of our Navy."
"We will obtain success
through first-rate leadership,
proper applications of inno-
vation and the most effective
weapon we have the Navy
recruiter."
Sailors up for shore duty and
in their window for transfer
are encouraged to contact their
detailers to discuss the possi-
bility of helping to shape our
Navy's future.
