Learn Secret To Advancement

From Staff
Want to know why the
advancement exams are written
the way they are or how best to
study for them?
Learn about the Navy Enlisted
Advancement System (NEAS)
from the people who work it
during a Feb. 14 brief at Ocean
Breeze Conference Center.
There will be three briefs, 8-10
a.m., 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m.
EMCM(SS) Robert
McCombs, command master
chief for the Naval Education

and training Professional
Development and Technology
Center (NETPDTC) in
Pensacola, Fla., will hold three
all-hands briefs to explain the
advancement exam develop-
ment for all rates.
"[The] recommended audi-
ence is anyone that is affected
by or affects a Sailor's advance-
ment," McCombs said. "While
the brief is geared toward junior
personnel, E-3 to E-6, there is
information that all levels of
the command -COs and XOs

included do not understand
about the NEAS system."
"Even though the evaluation
system for E-4 to E-6 candi-
dates carries the largest percent-
age of the final multiple score, it
does not have the biggest effect
on Sailors advancements," he
added.
Topics that will be discussed
during the brief include:
*Purpose of advancement
exams and the final multiple
score
*Development and adminis-

tration of advancement exams
*All final multiple score fac-
tors
*Profile Sheet how to actu-
ally read and use for future
advancement cycles
*Preparation for advancement
- to include a tool that most
Sailors are not aware exists
*Recent and future changes to
the advancement system.
McCombs brings with him
seven years of experience work-
ing at the Navy Advancement
Center under NETPDTC. He

was hand-selected by Naval
Reactors (NAVSEA 08) to
help create the first nuclear
advancement exams. During
his time with NETPDTC, he
helped to redesign the Sailor's
advancement profile sheet and
the advancement exams to
include Professional Military
Knowledge (PMK) questions.
He also created a presentation
and led a team of chief petty
officers to educate Sailors on
the advancement system.

The Sullivans Has Port Stop In Turkey

By Lt.j.g. Angela Lefler
USS The Sulivans
USS The Sullivans (DDG-68)
has just completed its seventh
port stop with a visit to Aksaz,
Turkey.
Despite elevated force protec-
tion conditions on the Turkish
military base, the area and the
neighboring city of Marmaris
was considerably safe for nor-
mal tourist activities.
Although this visit was for
the most part a liberty call, The
Sullivans found several oppor-
tunities to increase command
readiness and integrate with
members of the Turkish navy.
Turkish liaison officers
planned several events and dem-
onstrations for the crew. Several
hours of gun range time was
made available for ship's force
use. More than 35 crewmem-
bers were able to get qualified
in a variety of firearms required
for different watch stations.
Additionally, their Navy
displayed their state of the art
earthquake recovery and salvage
equipment and The Sullivans'
search and rescue team mem-
bers were able to participate in
a recovery demonstration.
The Turkish Earthquake
Recovery and Salvage team
had the opportunity to show off
their skills and mission compe-
tency during a simulated rescue
of trapped workers, movement
of large pieces of debris and the
lifting of tons of cement.
Finally, both navies were able
to integrate their inport emer-
gency teams during a live fire-
fighting exercise. Utilizing the
base's modern training facili-
ties, The Sullivans was able to

Pay Rais

A 3-percent pay raise for ser-
vicemembers, an increase in
ground forces and continued
funding of the global war on
terrorism are on the table now
that President Bush has deliv-
ered his fiscal 2008 defense
budget request and 2007 emer-
gency supplemental request to
Congress today.
The total DoD 2008 budget
request is pegged at $481.4 bil-
lion. This represents an 11.3-
percent increase over fiscal
2007.
"As commander in chief, my
highest priority is the security
of the nation," President Bush
said in his letter delivering the
budget to Congress. "My bud-
get invests substantial resources
to fight the global war on terror,
and ensure our homeland is pro-
tected from those who would do
us harm.
"We will transform our mili-
tary," he continued, "to meet
the new threats of the 21st cen-
tury and provide the brave men
and women on the front lines
with the resources they need to
be successful in this decisive
ideological struggle."
The total U.S. government
budget request is $2.9 trillion.

supplemental request for this
fiscal year is set at $93.4 bil-
lion. This request will cover
the cost of operations through
the end of fiscal 2007, Sept. 30.
The request also includes funds
to repair or replace equipment
lost in combat.
All of the requests must
be passed by the House of
Representatives and the Senate.
The House and Senate may
make changes in the request.
Strategic modernization
receives the lion's share of the
budget request, with $176.8 bil-
lion and 38 percent. Readiness
and support will receive $146.5
billion and make up 30 percent
of the request. Military pay
and health care are pegged at
$137 billion and 28 percent of
the request. Family housing and
facilities improvement is look-
ing at $21.1 billion and roughly
4 percent of the request.
Under the proposal, the
active-duty Army will grow to
547,400 soldiers by the end of
fiscal 2012. The service now
has 484,400 soldiers. The
increase will allow the Army
to field 48 brigades up from
42 and give soldiers two years
at their home stations for every
year deployed.
The Marine Corps will
grow to 202,000 by fiscal

Work-related functions were
not the only activities tak-
ing place during this port visit.
MWR subsidized several tours
that allowed the crew to partici-
pate in events at a bargain price.
"We're extremely excited to
be here," said Ensign Edward

The Sullivans.
Crewmembers were able to
treat themselves to a Turkish
bath and had a good time enjoy-

First of all, I would like to
welcome back our shipmates
on USS Boone (FFG 28) and
from HSL-48 Detachment
Five. They are returning to
Mayport after successfully con-
tributing to 6th Fleet operations
while assigned independently
to Operation Active Endeavor
and Standing NATO Maritime
Group 1. These Sailors deserve
a BZ for all their hard work!
A new ship is homeported at
Mayport. USNS Hunter moved
up from Key West late last
month. Hunter has an all-civil-
ian crew that performs training,
such as visit, board, search and
seizure and maritime interdic-
tion operations. We welcome
Hunter and its crew to Mayport.
It provides a valuable training
asset for the fleet. We look
forward to them being part of
the "Finest Service to the Finest
Fleet."
Congratulations to Mayport's
K-9 Kennel for receiving the
CNRSE Kennel of the Quarter.
The hard-working Sailors and
dogs were chosen out of 12 ken-
nels in the region. Great job!
W-2s are on MyPay, so it's
time to get your taxes filed.

Can You Divorce Proof

Your Navy Marriage?

By Beth Wiruth
Columnist
As Navy spouses we know a
military marriage has challeng-
es our civilian counterparts do
not face. We know the divorce
rate is high, roughly 70 percent
among enlisted and just under
60 percent for officers. But that
does not mean our marriages
are doomed. This week is the
first of a three-week explora-
tion of successful military mar-
riages and what we can learn
from them.
First, for our younger couples,
Hollywood does us a huge dis-
service. The wedding ceremony
is not the crown of marriage,
nor is divorce a medal of honor.
The best marriages become
great marriages through dedica-
tion, communication and hard
work. A great marriage doesn't
just happen. We BUILD it.
I had the privilege of know-
ing all-star football great, Tim
Johnson (Pittsburgh Steelers
and Washington Redskins). His
children were my piano students
and his wife a dear friend. I saw
firsthand the work it took to be
a professional athlete. We see
the "end product" on Monday
night football. What we do not
see is the hours and hours of
weight lifting, running drill after
drill, reviewing game films, diet
control and more. Yes, Tim had
natural talent; but he will be the
first to tell you that talent alone
did not make him an all-star. It
was the years of unsung, non-
glamorous, sweaty hard work.
We often walk into mar-
riage believing we are so much
in love that we'll weather any
storm. That starry-eyed love is
analogous to Johnson's "talent".
Just as Tim's talent alone would
not build his great career so
love alone cannot build a great
marriage. We have to build and
exercise attributes that will keep
that love burning for a lifetime.
My mentor, Jeanne, is a
woman whose husband's naval
career spans 34 years. She has
the perspective of an enlisted
wife as well as an officer's
wife... and she was at his side
all 34 years. She gave me three
points to consider and imple-
ment to guard my marriage.

"Don't hope your marriage will
survive and thrive, DECIDE
that it will." In making this first
decision, all other decisions will
be determined.
Second, put your spouse
above all others. Jeanne told
me she had a decision to make
when the kids, her career, her
personal interests and volunteer
involvement began to com-
pete for her time and attention.
Slowly but steadily she realized
her heart was turning from her
deep love for her husband. She
realized that if her marriage was
to be fulfilling and successful
she would have to keep her hus-
band as number one.
Does this sound like an archa-
ic idea? Old-fashioned? Perhaps
it is. But all the successful, ful-
filling marriages I know have
this principle in common. All
decisions are based on what will
preserve a healthy marriage. Let
me ask you a question? Who
is going to be there for you in
your old age? Your job? Your
girlfriends? Nah...it's that one
with whom you have invested
your time, devotion and love.
By the way, as Jeanne put her
husband number one an amaz-
ing thing happened. Her hus-
band started putting HER first
in his life. Sweet! She said she
is now treated like a queen. I
don't know about you but I can
live with that.
Jeanne's final piece of advice
was concerning deployment.
"Beth, practice Scott's pres-
ence. Don't put away his things
from the bathroom or bedroom.
Place his pictures everywhere.
Do nothing in his absence that
you would not do in his pres-
ence."
Next week we'll look at tips
to keep that spark alive and pro-
tect your marriage.

comment for Beth? Contact her

only participate in two fund

seems that the NMCRS fund
drive is the most difficult to
execute.
We all know that good news
travels fast, but bad news trav-

when it comes to Navy-Marine
Corps Relief Society (NMCRS).
Far too often this organization
has drawn criticism from a few
vocal detractors. What you
don't hear is the silent major-
ity and the good news stories.
I think that is because this ded-

It's almost Valentine's Day.
As a kid I remember the expec-
tation that everyone was to
bring Valentine's Day cards to
school that were made out to
all of one's classmates. It was a
tough day for which a youngster
had to prepare. You had to find
a cheap package of cards, but
not too cheap. You had to make
sure to spell everyone's name
correctly. And most impor-
tantly, you had to figure out
which card would go to whom.
There was always that special
person on your list who was to
receive the mushiest one, the
rest needed to get something
that wouldn't give the wrong
impression.
Well I'm older now, but I've
learned that Valentine's Day

more so with men. Whatever

We have all been there at
some point in our lives when
the money didn't quite stretch
between paydays and some
kind of unplanned emergency
occurred. Where do you turn,
who do your go for help? The
Navy Marine Corps Relief
Society! I can tell you that
about 20 years ago when this
young Sailor arrived for duty
on his first ship in beautiful San
Diego with his wife and brand
new baby, I had no place to go
and about $20 to my name. The
NMCRS helped me get estab-
lished in an apartment, put some
groceries in the fridge and gas
in the car. It was still a week
and half until payday, and I
don't know what we would have
done without them. There are
thousands of other stories like
that all over our Navy. With
the 2007 fund drive set to kick
off, I thought I would take an
opportunity to remind everyone
of the value of NMCRS.

and women are plagued with
what we should do, or what we
should buy in order to show the
one we love that we are think-
ing of them. There is a sense of
dread about how cold the dog-
house will be for us men if we
get it wrong. I can't vouch for
the fears you women may have.
One thing I have learned is
that Valentine's Day can be
made easier when celebrated
all year. Hopefully we all real-
ize that our affection toward the
one we love should be demon-
strated every day. Just as keep-
ing momentum going means a
smoother ride and less energy
wasted when driving a car, so it
is with a loving relationship.

Sailors, Marines and their fami-

that is more than 10 percent of

Most of us are pretty familiar
with many of the services that
have been around for a while,
such as emergency aid in the
form of food, shelter, vehicle

they had boundless energy to
find ways to express it. They
also share how it now takes a
lot more work and energy than
back in the courtship days.
If you've lost the momentum,
may I suggest a few things?
First get a calendar and start
marking off days to do some
little things and a few big things
for your loved one throughout
the year. Figure out on your
calendar at what intervals to
write a special note, or when to
send or bring home flowers, or
when to do a special favor, or
when to plan a special trip, or
when to go out for dinner.
The second thing you can do
is go out on Valentines Day for
dinner or a movie, or something
that you both enjoy. During
that time share a card that prom-
ises your commitment of love
throughout the year to them.
Perhaps a coupon book that
you make up which grants them
different kinds of favors, etc.

Terrorism. The assistance can
range from food and lodging
expenses for a family member
to remain at the bedside of a
wounded service member,
beyond the seven days pro-
vided by the military, to expe-
diting transportation while
families wait for invitational
travel orders. Furthermore, if
a wounded service member has
more than three family members
who want to be at the bedside,
then NMCRS can provide assis-
tance for the additional family
members to be with their loved
one. NMCRS may also assist
servicemember once they return
home, such as with modifica-
tions for handicap access.
Bottom line here, is we in the
armed forces have always taken
care of our own; thankfully we
don't have to do it alone. We
have outstanding organizations
such as the Navy-Marine Corps
Relief Society partnering with
us! As the 2007 NMCRS Fund
Drive rolls around let us con-
sider what part we can play in
helping our shipmates, our for-
mer shipmates and their fami-
lies.

Let them know you are com-
mitted to them for not only on
Valentine's Day, but throughout
the year.
Lastly, I've had the plea-
sure of meeting a good num-
ber of couples on Marriage
Enrichment Retreats that I've
conducted while working here
at Mayport with the CREDO
program. What I've found is
that most couples have come
to the retreats because they
were committed to making their
relationship better. Perhaps
for those of you who are mar-
ried this is the time to commit
to sharing time together on a
retreat. What a great way to say
"I love you and I'm committed
to you!"
CREDO has been in the busi-
ness for many years providing

Coming Back Home

Boone, HSL-48 Det. 5 Return To Mayport

-Photos by MC2 Susan Cornell
Sailors man the rails aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Boone (FFG 28) as the ship pulls into their homeport in Mayport Fla., after completing a six-month deployment. During the deployment, Boone
successfully contributed to 6th Fleet operations while assigned independently to Operation Active Endeavor in the Mediterranean. They also provided assistance to the Spanish Coast Guard in the recovery of
contraband.

From HSL-48
USS Boone (FFG 28), with embarked
HSL-48 Detachment Five, returned to
Naval Station Mayport on Jan. 31 after
completing a six-month Standing NATO
Maritime Group One (SNMG-1).
The ship and air detachment partici-
pated in several multi-national exer-
cises, including DANEX 06, Agile
Cougar, Spartan Hammer, and PEAN-
06. They spent 118 days underway, 65
days in port, and 28 days shore-based at
NS Rota, Spain.
They conducted a total of 456 mis-
hap-free flight hours, of which 191.4
were flown in direct support of
Operation Active Endeavor and the
Global War On Terrorism.
The detachment was able to conduct
real-time operations by providing air
support for numerous visual identifi-
cations, enhancing the commander's
maritime awareness and maintaining
a recognized maritime picture. The
detachment was responsible for the
interception of two high-speed suspect
vessels, one of which resulted in USS
Boone seizing more than 100 pounds of
contraband.
As the United States' contribution to
SNMG-1, USS Boone and Detachment Five were
assigned to participate in many international anti-
submarine and anti-surface exercises.
The deployment allowed the detachment to gain
experience operating in a multi-national environ-
ment with Canadian, German, French, Swedish,
Dutch, British, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, and
Italian forces.

The Sailors also served as ambassadors of good
will during many high-visibility port visits and
were able to enjoy liberty in Spain, Sweden,
Denmark, Greece, France, and Italy.
On the way home, USS Boone support-
ed a Tiger Cruise from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the three-day tran-
sit to Mayport with family members embarked.

SFriends and family members wait anxiously as Boone pulls pierside during its Jan. 31 homecoming.

Ships' ASW Capabilities Continue

To Improve With ,
By Ensign of testing and development of
Jennifer L. Wilcox ASW tactical equipment. P-3C

As anti-submarine war-
fare (ASW) becomes a more
important warfare area for the
Navy, Commander, Destroyer
Squadron (COMDESRON) 24
is continuing to lead the train-
ing and evaluation of vessels
and air assets in ASW tactics.
COMDESRON 24 is the pri-
mary assistant to Commander
Strike Force Training Atlantic
(CSFTL), the Second Fleet
ASW Executive Agent.
SEASWITI, or Southeastern
Anti-Submarine Warfare
Integrated Training Initiative's
mission is to "provide a learning
forum in the Southeast Region
to enhance the effectiveness and
quality of anti-submarine war-
fare training by coordinating
assets, knowledge and technol-
ogy."
The training initiative is of
high interest to the Chief of
Naval Operations (OPNAV)
Surface Warfare Division
(N86).
The most recent SEASWITI
exercise, 07-1, featured
Mayport-based ships USS
Vicksburg (CG 69), USS
Carney (DDG 64), and USS
Halyburton (FFG 40), along
with aircraft from Helicopter
Anti-Submarine Squadron Light
42, 44, 46, and 48 to include
HSL-44 Detachment Five,
embarked in Halyburton.
Other ships participating
were the Canadian submarine
HMCS Windsor (S 877), USS
Annapolis (SSN 760), USS Carr
(FFG 52), and USNS Patuxent
(T-AO 201), as well as other
units from organizations and
contractors, all of whom were
focusing on the early stages
Budget
allows commanders down to
brigade level to fund projects
in neighborhoods that benefit
the community and put unem-
ployed Iraqis and Afghans to
work. Officials said this pro-
gram has an inordinate impact
on the security situation in Iraq

Orion aircraft from Commander,
Patrol and Reconnaissance
Wing 11 also participated in the
exercise, which took place Dec.
4-8.
"The participating units
performed several tactical
events focusing on coordinat-
ed ASW operations that used
all four warships and the sub-
marine while using air assets
for prosecution of the subma-
rines," said Lt. George Klaus,
COMDESRON 24 submarine
operations officer. "Windsor
gave us a great opportunity to
practice against a real-world
SSK (diesel-electric submarine)
target. SSK boats are a growing
threat around the world.
The importance of this ASW
training cannot be overstated.
Forty-one countries, includ-
ing China, North Korea, and
Iran have modern submarines.
Of the 380 submarines oper-
ated by 41 countries worldwide,
more than 300 are extremely
quiet diesel-electric submarines.
"It was a welcome sight to
have them in the exercise again.
Their part increased the level of
OPFOR (opposing forces) pro-
ficiency and realism."
Each ASW event lasted
approximately four to eight
hours, with each ship complet-
ing eight events. In addition,
each ship met more than a
dozen training requirements.
The crew of HMCS Windsor
enjoyed a port visit to Mayport,
including a Jacksonville Jaguars
game and a Jacksonville
Barracudas hockey match.
Another focus during
SEASWITI is marine mammal
protection, particularly right
whales, as right whale season

and Afghanistan.
The fiscal 2007 emergency
supplemental request will fund
operations through Sept. 30.
The request is for $93.4 bil-
lion, with $39.3 billion going
to warfighting, supplies, sup-
port and maintenance. Also, the

SEASWITI

ends March 31.
While it is crucial that U.S.
Navy ships continue training
with active sonar, the Navy goes
to great lengths to minimize any
potential effects on marine life
through the use of protective
measures.
The Navy makes every effort
to safeguard marine mammals
when exercises are conducted.
"We are working closely
with environmental representa-
tives from CFFC (Commander,
Fleet Forces Command) to
be proactive in protecting the
marine mammal population,"
said STGCS Scott Pageau,
COMDESRON 24 ASW officer.
"The structuring of the schedule
included training for all partici-
pating units as well as station-
ing trained lookouts, listening
passively for marine mammals,
employing night vision and
thermal imaging equipment,
using safety zones around ships,
and taking appropriate action
when marine mammals are spot-
ted. We will continue to ensure
marine mammal protection dur-
ing all SEASWITI events."
This is the fifth SEASWITI
event conducted in the past 18
months. Capt. Robert Kapcio,
Commander, Destroyer
Squadron 24, is tasked by
Commander, Second Fleet to
conduct the exercises on a quar-
terly basis.
COMDESRON 24 receives
support from Naval Mine
and Anti-Submarine Warfare
Command, whose data experts
reconstruct and analyze each
event for post-exercise analysis.
Other supporting commands
include Surface Warfare
Development Group (SWDG);
Johns Hopkins University
From Page 1
supplemental request provides
$10.4 billion to defeat impro-
vised explosive devices.
The supplemental budget
request asks for $3.8 billion to
train and equip the Iraqi secu-
rity forces and $5.9 billion for
Afghan security forces.

The next exercise, SEASWITI
07-2, will be conducted this
month. This SEASWITI will
include units of Commander
Standing NATO Maritime
Group One (CSNMG1) with
Rear Adm. Mahon (USN) as
commander. This will provide
an opportunity for U.S. ships to
conduct ASW operations with
our NATO allies and develop
a level of proficiency before
deployment.
SNMG1 units participat-
ing are the German ship FGS

U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command
Public,.
U.S. Naval Forces Southern
Command (NAVSO) welcomed
Navy Section Chiefs to its head-
quarters at NS Mayport Jan.
23 Jan. 25 to discuss Navy
support to Theater Security
Cooperation (TSC) in Latin
America.
Navy Section Chiefs are U.S.
Navy representatives work-
ing with the Military Group
(MILGRU) at U.S. Embassies
world-wide and they coordi-
nate a variety of maritime pro-
grams within their host-coun-
try. TSC includes efforts such
as military-to-military coopera-
tion, humanitarian assistance,
disaster relief, combined train-
ing, exercises and operations,
intelligence sharing and mari-
time security assistance within
the region to achieve common
goals.
"The Navy Section Chiefs
are a vital link in the commu-
nication chain between the U.S.
and our partner nations in Latin

America," said Commander,
U.S. Naval Forces Southern
Command Rear Adm. James
W. Stevenson Jr. "They play
a definite and significant role
in assisting us in strengthen-
ing partnerships with the mari-
time services of each country."
Stevenson led a round-table dis-
cussion during the conference,
focusing on the top priorities of
each country team.
Lt. Cmdr. John Testa, Navy
Section Chief in Honduras said
of the conference, "Anytime
a group of your peers can get
together to discuss ideas, chal-
lenges, and what's happening
in an open forum, it's going to
result in improvements in the
entire region."
NAVSO is Navy component
to the Combatant Command,
U.S. Southern Command
(SOUTHCOM). Its area of
responsibility for SOUTHCOM
includes all of Latin America
and encompasses 16 million
square miles of seas and oceans
including the Caribbean, sec-
tions of the Atlantic and Pacific,
30 countries and 10 territories.

Why Do

College
By Frank Heinze
FCCJ
"I just want to get my A.A.
and transfer to the university."
I can't count the number of
times I've heard that comment
from a student beginning their
academic career here at FCCJ.
Let's see if I can clear up the
issue for you. Remember, an
intended transfer major applies
only to Associate in Arts (A.A.)
students.
First, notice I said "intended
transfer major." There's not
really a "major" in the A.A.
program, your degree will state
"Associate in Arts," no mention
of any "major."
The A.A. is designed to ful-
fill the state General Education
requirement of 36 credits along
with 24 credits of electives, or,
as I prefer to call them, "major
program prerequisites."
Here's one of the most
important reasons to meet with
an advisor to determine the
courses you need to take, the
selection of the proper courses
of General Education and pre-
requisite electives so that you
can enter the university of your
choice as a "true junior," a stu-
dent who can enter the univer-
sity program of your choice in
the junior year.
It is true that earning an A.A.
at FCCJ grants you entry into
a state university, but it is not
a fact that you will be granted
entry into the university or the
program of your choice.
If you do not have the prereq-
uisite courses you may have to
take several freshman or sopho-
more courses after you enter the
university, wasting a lot of time
and money.
FCCJ has recently added
warnings to your registration
if you haven't selected a trans-
fer major after your first two
semesters.
You can override that warn-
ing by clicking on the "Register

I Need A

Major?
me anyway" button but each
time you ignore the warning
you may be taking courses you
don't need, or taking courses
that won't apply to your pro-
gram of study at the university.
Selections made within the
36 credits of General Education
can be just as important as the
selection of the elective prereq-
uisites. For example, a student
who wants to go into Education
needs to take LIT2000 rather
than ENC1102; a student who
wants to go into Business
needs to take ECO2013 and not
POS2112.
In the mathematics and sci-
ences most of the course selec-
tions are different for many of
the intended transfer majors.
How do you choose? See an
advisor!
Self advising is the number
one reason students end up tak-
ing courses that either do not
apply to their eventual program
at the university or end up tak-
ing many more courses than
they need to take at FCCJ.
Your advisor can help you
research the program of your
choice at the university of
your choice, find the prerequi-
site courses for that program
and help you plan your time
here, making the most of your
choices. Our goal is to have
you graduate from FCCJ with a
minimum number of credits and
into the university program of
your choice in your junior year.
But what if you don't know
what you want to do in life? We
can help you there, too. FCCJ
has a Career Development
Center (CDC) at each of the
four main campuses where you
can be tested to determine your
abilities and interests, research
different occupations and the
university programs required
for those occupations.

the second time in three years
that the ship has visited the port.
While in port, the crew par-
ticipated in several activities
that benefited mutual relations
between the United States and
Croatia. Many Sailors enjoyed
the opportunity to shop in the
Old City that was built some
1,700 years ago; while others
preferred the large selection of
nightlife and sightseeing.
USS The Sullivans basket-
ball and soccer team made their
debut against a very talented

so engaging; the cooler weather
was barely noticed.
"Not only did this MWR
event provide entertainment
for the crew, it also provided
the opportunity to build team-
work and camaraderie amongst
our Sailors," said Ensign Brian
Kendrick.
Other crewmembers enjoyed
the sights and entertainment of
the nearby city of Marmaris.
The Bazaar shopping area was
especially popular because of
the endless opportunities to bar-
gain and haggle prices with the
locals.
The night life was also a big
hit. Several bars and dance
clubs were open late enough to
engage everyone for most of the
evening. For the most part, the
clubs were very westernized in
style and the prices of the food
and drinks were comparatively
fair.
One of the most entertaining
events for the crew and locals
alike was the live show put on
by the ship's band, Keelhauled.
They were given the unique

out first and took an early two-
point lead midway through the
first quarter. The skill level of
the Croatian team proved to
be too much, however, as the
The Sullivans team watched
their lead disappear. The sharp
shooting Croatians took advan-
tage of The Sullivans defense
and made a majority of their
shots from the outside.
The ship's soccer team expe-
rienced similar difficulties with
their counterparts. They had an
early lead, which slipped away
due to the talent and experi-
enced Croatian team.
During the port visit, The
Sullivans crew had the opportu-
nity to take a tour of Krka Falls
in a national park near the town
of Sibenik, Croatia. The water-
falls were nestled in a deep val-
ley surrounded with lush vege-
tation, which made for a serene

opportunity to perform at a
local bar and did an excellent
job performing a full set of cov-
ers, to include classic rock and
modem hits.
