Naval Station Mayport is
hosting soccer tryouts for the
All-Navy men's soccer team
until Jan. 16 in preparation for
the 2007 Armed Forces Soccer
Championship Tournament here
Jan. 17 22.
Forty-two players, in both the
Navy and Coast Guard, from
across the globe have come to
Mayport ready to show their
skills and abilities as they try
out for the team.
Sailors Rob Carraco, Brandon
Bleakley and Juan Juvera are
three of the competitors that
have become friends through
making the team in previous
years and are looking forward
to another shot at this year's
squad.
"Playing on an All-Navy team
is a pretty prestigious event,"
said Bleakley, a Naval Recruiter
out of St. Louis. "To make this
team means you're the absolute
best."
The training camp, which
lasts 19 days, will test the 42
athletes' endurance as they
workout both during the day
and evening. When the camp
comes to an end, the player pool
will be slimmed down to a mere
18 men.

Sailors from commands around the globe show their soccer skills as they compete for a coveted
spot on the All-Navy men's soccer team. The 18-man team will play in the Armed Forces Soccer
Championship, January 17th through January 23th. The tournament features the best soccer players
from all branches of the military and will determine which players will represent the United States at
the International Military Sports Championship.
and ready to play," said Coast
Guard Aviation Maintenance
Technician 2nd Class Chris
Lamb. "You can't expect to
come out here and compete if
you're not physically and men-
tally strong."
SK3 Sean McGarry, a pre-
vious All-Navy and La Salle
University soccer player, is uti-
lizing skills he has learned off
the field as well, in hopes to
make the final cut.
"In order to succeed here you
have to have good communi-
cation skills and know how to
play as a team," said McGarry.
"Just like on a ship, it's not just
about the skills you posses but
how you gel with those around
you that allow things to run
smoothly."
Once the final team is select-
ed, the players will go on to
play in the Armed Forces Soccer
Championship Tournament
here Jan. 17 22. There they
will compete against all other
branches of service in a double
round-robin tournament. Those
who excel in the tournament
will be selected to play in the
International Military Sports
Championship (also known as
CISM) in Brazil, where they
will represent the United States
in competition against all for-
eign military soccer teams.
"I see a lot of good talent on
the field and we look to have a
strong team," said Coast Guard
Lt. Cmdr. and head coach Joe
Ponseti. "Deciding who will
make the final team is going to
be tough."
HSL-46 'Sons of Liberty' Fight War On Drugs
By Lt.j.g. Peter Mallory
HSL-46
The spirit of the holidays
were still in the air when Naval
Station Mayport's USS Robert
G. Bradley (FFG-49) and HSL-
46's Detachment One, "The
Sons of Liberty," returned from
the first half of their deploy-
ment on Jan. 11. USS Robert
G. Bradley and the Sons of
Liberty have been conduct-
ing Counter Narco-Terrorism
(CNT) operations in the Eastern
Pacific since late October. The
ship-air team is working with
Joint Interagency Task Force-
South in the detection, intercep-
tion and boarding of suspected
drug smuggling vessels.
The detachment has been
busy supporting the CNT mis-
sion the past three months,
which included the execution of
more than 220 flight hours and
support for 10 law enforcement
boardings. With only three
liberty port calls, the Sons of
Liberty are looking forward to
the upcoming maintenance peri-
od in Mayport during January.
This maintenance period is a
chance for the air department
to provide some Tender Loving
Care to Cutlass 460 which has
been a work horse during the
first part of the cruise and a
chance to visit the loved ones
who have been providing won-
derful support to the "Sons"
since they initially deployed in
March of 2006.
A major accomplishment
for the detachment's under-
way period was a phase "D"
inspection on Cutlass 460 that
involved removing all the main
rotor blades from the helicop-
ter while underway. Led by
Aviation Machinist's Mate First
Class Walter "Wally" Monical,
this task was a tremendous
undertaking, especially after
trained eyes in the maintenance
department found major corro-
sion on the base of the main
rotor hub.

The Navy Flight Demonstra-
tion Squadron, the Blue Angels,
announced their schedule for
the 2007 show season.
Following winter training, the
team will begin its 61st season
at Naval Air Facility El Centro,
Calif., March 10. It will con-
clude Nov. 10 at Naval Air
Station Pensacola.
The Blue Angels are sched-
uled to perform 66 demon-
strations at 35 air show sites
throughout the United States, as
they celebrate 20 years of flying
the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet.
Demonstration sites are select-
ed in support of the objectives
of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine
Corps and the Department of
Defense. Public performances
greatly assist Navy and Marine
Corps recruiting and retention
goals, enhance esprit de corps
among uniformed men and
women, and demonstrate the
professional skills and capa-
bilities of the armed forces to
bolster pride in the American
public.
"The Blue Angels are fired up
and ready for a safe and exhila-
rating show season," said Cmdr.
Kevin Mannix, Blue Angels
flight leader and command-
ing officer. "While we wanted
to perform at every air show
Mayport
site, we have a limited num-
ber of available performance
dates each season. Every venue
that requested to host the Blue
Angels received the Navy's
utmost consideration."

Welcome back to everyone
who took leave this holiday sea-
son, hope you all had a great
vacation and were able to spend
some quality time with your
friends and families.
The period should have
allowed us to recharge our bat-
teries and get ready for a very
busy 2007. It's back to work
for Naval Station Mayport,
though for most of us, we didn't
see a great reduction in traffic
coming on the station. Thank
you to everyone for being safe
this holiday leave period.
First, I would like to thank
everyone who volunteered for
the 2006 Kettle Campaign for
the Salvation Army. It was very
successful and you raised more
than $6,000, mostly in quarters,
nickels and dimes.
Additionally, I would like to
thank all the folks at MWR and
the tenant commands who par-
ticipated and supported all the

holiday events on the station.
From the Magical Christmas to
the Ship Lighting Competition,
there was a great deal of effort
by MWR, USO and many oth-
ers to make this time of year
special.
I would also like to congrat-

January brings about a change
in thinking for some, in living
for others. A renewal or rebirth
occurs in those who decide to
be dedicated to a New Year's
resolution. I encourage every-
one to stay motivated and posi-
tive in the upcoming months
to those personal goals as well
as the goals for Naval Station
Mayport. In the New Year,
stay vigilant and wary of those
swerving drivers; and make the
right decisions, both for your-
's Column
self and your shipmates. I have
started my 2007 age defying
workout scheme to lose a few
pounds and improve eating hab-
its.
We are in for a few changes
as work on a new Commercial
Vehicle Entrance south of Gate
5 on A1A is scheduled to begin
this month, and after its comple-
tion, work on Gate 5 itself will
commence in March.
Gate 5 will be reconfigured
to support three incoming lanes
and one outgoing lane and will
have a new method of security
using automated entry instead
of security personnel checking
IDs by hand.
More than 1,000 personnel
will be selected beginning in
January for participation in the
new automated entry program
based on their work location on
base as well as their use of Gate
5.
Once the system has been
evaluated and found effective,
the base may choose to expand
the program to all base person-
nel. That construction is expect-
ed to be complete approxi-
mately August 2007. There
will be updates in The Mirror
to keep everyone abreast of the
changes in traffic flow, which
should improve once the project
is complete.
Another change began Dec.
28 when Crossroads Show Bar
and Beaches Gentleman's Club
were placed off limits to active
duty members. Armed Forces
Disciplinary Control Board
received reports of several vio-
lent incidents that took place in
the above establishments, which
resulted in permanent and/or
seriously injured service mem-
bers.
After more than a six-month
process during which each
establishment was given the
chance to present their sides and
implement corrective actions,
the board took the final action
of placing the establishments
off limits.
We feel strongly about mis-
hap reduction efforts because
we care very deeply about the
safety of each and every one of
you. Do not tempt the system
by visiting these establishments.
The restriction is for your safe-
ty and the safety of your ship-
mates.
We look forward to everyone
making this a great Navy year.
Please maintain your efforts to
pick up trash, keep the dump-
sters closed and the base look-
ing squared away. And don't
hesitate to email me charles.

suggestion or concern on how
the station can best serve the

ians that work and live on the

Religious Freedom Day provides us an oppor-
tunity to celebrate America's commitment to
protect the freedom of religion.
On this special day, I encourage all Americans
to renew their commitment to protecting the lib-
erties that make our country a beacon of hope
for people around the world who seek the free
exercise of religious beliefs and other freedoms.
The right to religious freedom is a founda-

the protection of religious freedom in the First
Amendment to the United States Constitution.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH,
President of the United States of America,
by virtue of the authority vested in me by the
Constitution and laws of the United States, do
hereby proclaim January 16, 2007, as Religious
Freedom Day. I urge all Americans to observe
this day by asking for the blessing and protec-

engage in appropriate ceremonies and activities
in their homes, schools, and places of worship
as a sign of our resolve to protect and preserve
our religious freedom.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto

Sailors Reminded To Update Records Regularly
By Lt. Robert Johnson
Navy Personnel Command Communica-
tions Office
Navy Personnel Command
(NPC) is reminding Sailors
to review their records before
selection boards, using NPC's
Early Warning System that can
rescue a promotion opportunity.
The Early Warning System
can be used one week before
the selection board's convening
date. However, Sailors should
be reviewing their records at
least six months prior to this
date.
Board recorders will arrive
to review the records of pro-
motion-eligible Sailors one
week before the selection board
convenes. It's not the responsi-
bility of the recorders to inter-
pret records; they only verify
continuity and completeness
of records. Missing officer and
enlisted evaluations will be
noted at https://www.npc.navy.
mil/Apps/SB_Discrepancy_list/.
During this timeframe, a
member may visit the site and
enter his or her social security
number to see if a record dis-
crepancy is noted. Discrepancies
will be displayed along with a
note giving the definition and
guidance on submitting cor-
rections. The servicemember
is then responsible for quickly
correcting these errors.
While the online discrepan-
cy check is a good last-minute
insurance against missing items,
a comprehensive record scrub
six months in advance is essen-
tial.
"Besides being listed in
instructions, it is good career
management to maintain one's
record," said Cmdr. Steve
Lepp, director of Officer Career
Progression, Pers-480. "With
the web-based tools it is much
easier to monitor and correct
your record than it was in the
old days of microfiche. No one
has more interest in your career
than you do."
Six months out, the ser-
vicemember should visit the
BUPERS OnLine (BOL) Web
site and order their official
military personnel file. Next,
the performance summary
record (PSR)and enlisted sum-
mary record (ESR) or officer
data card (ODC) should be
checked and verified. Updates
and corrections to these can be
made by following the direc-
tions on BOL. When checking
records six months out service
members should submit cor-
rections to PERS-312. For the
mailing address visit http://
www.npc.navy.mil/CareerInfo/
RecordsManagement/.
If a selection board is about
to convene service mem-
bers must send missing infor-
mation via letter to the board
president. Your letter should
be sent by mail or fax to the
NPC Customer Service Center
(CSC) https://ahdsedstwsl6.ahf.
nmci.navy.mil/OA HTML/npc.
html. This information must be
received at least one day prior
to the starting date of the board.
No one other than individuals
being considered may submit
information directly to a board.
Information sent to the board
will only be used during the
board and will not be changed
in your permanent record.
Officers and enlisted mem-
bers who served as individual
augmentees (IA) should ensure
their official records reflect this
service. NAVADMIN 273/06
and NAVADMIN 300/06 give
information on advancement
points, Navy enlisted classifica-
tions and additional qualifica-
tion designations given for IA
service.
"Boards are giving additional
consideration for personnel who
serve on IA missions in support
of the global war on terrorism,
so it is very important that eli-
gible members make sure the
board knows about their accom-
plishments by their records,"
said Lepp.
Officers and enlisted mem-
bers are strongly encouraged to
call the NPC Customer Service
Center at 1-866-U ASK NPC
(1-866-827-5672) or DSN 882-
5672 to confirm receipt of their
package for statutory promotion
selection boards. They may also
check the Customer Service
Web site online using the CSC
link on the NPC homepage:

8 THE MIRROR, NS MAYPORT, Thursday, January 11, 2007
If you are a regular reader of
my columns you know last week
I confessed that I do not make
New Year's Resolutions. But
that does not mean that I don't
set goals for myself and my
family. This year I have added
one more goal to focus this
column on finding, research-
ing and reporting on benefits,
resources and organizations that
contribute to our quality of life
as military families.
The commissary is one of our
most visible benefits but asoft-
en misunderstood. Before I get
into the details of this benefit
I want to say a quick word to
Guard and Reserve families:
Your commissary benefits have
changed. You now have unlim-
ited access to the commissary.
Present your dependent ID to
gain access to the base and to
purchase your items at the com-
missary.
The Commissary is provided
to active duty military service
personnel, guard and reserve,
retirees and their families. Per
congressional mandate items
are sold at cost plus five per-
cent. The five percent sur-
charge added at the bottom
of your receipt is not a tax as
some think. This surcharge is
put back into the commissary to
fund new construction, upgrade
equipment, and expansions.
Independent market research
shows that you can experience
30 percent savings on your
overall food bill. For a family of
four this means an annual sav-
ings of roughly $2,700. Some
departments have a higher sav-
ings than others but your over-
all food bill can be 30% lower
by shopping at your local DeCA
commissary. By the way, this
savings includes the surcharge.

Read Food Labels To Help Lose
By Kay Blakley
DeCA
Don't know if you've noticed,
but a strange phenomenon is
underway at your neighbor-
hood commissary these days.
Products whose labels contain
the words "reduced-calorie,"
"low-fat," "fat-free," "sugar-
free," or any form of the word
"diet" are flying off the shelves
faster than stockers can replen-
ish them. Commissary workers
know there's no need for alarm.
It's just that "dieting season"
has begun. As soon as folks
have had a chance to survey the
damage done by all those deli-
cious holiday indulgences, they
start to look for ways to shed
any reminders of just what a
good time they had!
Exactly how you go about
losing unwanted pounds is an
individual issue that needs to
be tailored to your taste buds
and food preferences, but a few
important concepts should be at
the heart of your plan.
First and foremost, remem-
ber that calories do count; con-
suming more calories than you
bum in physical activity equals
pounds gained, and reversing
that ratio equals pounds lost.
You don't want to starve
yourself in the process, so
you've got to learn how to make
every calorie count. Just how is
that done, you ask? By reading
a product's nutrition facts label,
and understanding what you've
read.
Unfortunately, these aren't
written in a manner that will
ever land them on the bestsell-
er list, but the Food and Drug
Administration has recently
released an interactive online
learning program that makes
them a little more user friendly.
Customers Can Cut Costs
From DeCA
Commissaries are hoping
shoppers in the United States
will say yes to paper bags for
bagging their groceries as part
of the Defense Commissary
Agency's measures to offset
recent major cost increases of
plastic and paper bags.
"Our customers have a really
big role in this latest effort as
we try to control costs while
continuing to provide a premier
commissary benefit. They've
responded well during previous
'Say no to plastic bags and no
to double bagging' campaigns
so this is more of a reminder to
continue using paper bags and a
call for more customers to join
in. The purpose is to control
unnecessary costs, not inconve-
nience customers," said Scott
Simpson, DeCA's chief operat-
ing officer.
Changing bagging preferenc-
es is something most custom-

Farewell To Old Friend
By Bill Austin
Staff
Cake and kind words set the
scene on Jan. 5 as friends and
co-workers said goodbye to
Homer Hull during a gathering
that celebrated his more than 22
years in Civil Service.
Hull, a long time architect for
Naval Facilities Command, was
born nearly 80 years ago as a
fourth generation Floridian dur-
ing the hard times of the great
depression, and has logged more
than 55 years in the workforce.
"It was a different time
alright," said Hull, about grow-
ing up in the depression during
an interview last year. "Things
were simpler then," said Hall.
"I recall the hardships my par-
ents went through, but as a kid,
they kept me from feeling any
of that. They both worked very
hard."
Work ethic is something
Homer Hull knows a thing or
two about.
Hull entered the U.S. Army
Air force (USAAF) in 1944 and
served in the European Theater
with troop carrier squadrons
maintaining the Douglas C-
47 and other transient air craft
at Munich's Rhiem Airport in
Southern Germany.
"I would say that the military
taught me all about team work,
getting along with others and
compromise," said Hull.
After his honorable dis-
charge in 1946, education
would be Hull's next "assign-
ment" with his enrollment at
Jacksonville Junior College,
(now Jacksonville University)
and set his sights on an archi-
tecture degree. In the summer
of 1948, he transferred to the
University of Florida and earned
a Bachelor of Architecture
Degree by 1951.
After his graduation, Hull
spent the summer working in
Manhattan New York
"The summer after I gradu-
ated was spent working in
Manhattan New York provid-
ing construction documents for
the state's transportation depart-
ment, said Hull. "After that, I
headed back to Jacksonville
to look for more architectural
work."
Hull found plenty of work
in Jacksonville, but per-

ing a farewell gathering.
haps the most important find
was his bride Carmel Ann
who he married in 1955 at
St. Paul's Catholic Church in
Jacksonville.
"We were married 47 years
before I lost her," said Hull, dur-
ing the previous interview. He
smiles still when he mentions
here name, and his eyes get dis-
tant as if bringing up fond mem-
ories. Hall said compromise and
respect were key ingredients to
their happy marriage.
By 1966, the Hull's were
now a family of five living in
Atlantic Beach, and he was a
seasoned Chief Draftsman and
Structural Designer providing
engineering services through-
out the Southeast which includ-
ed massive projects such as
the Tampa Airport in which
Hull served as Architectural
Manager, and the Florida State
Capital building.
Hull continued racking up
the projects and experience in
his chosen field until the early
eighty's when he threw his hat
into the Civil Servce ring.
"After 33 years in the private
sector with many of my career
goals accomplished, I decided
to start a new career closer to
my home in the Beaches, "said
Hull.
In 1984 he entered
Government service at Naval
Station Mayport as an Architect
in the Engineering Division at
Public Works, and like in all his
other assignments, immersed
himself in making a difference.
"It was a big adjustment,"
said Hull on his transition. "In
the corporate world its all about
the profit, and in government
service, its all about doing the
best job you can and serving
your country."
Hull serves in the commu-
nity too and was the represen-
tative for the Naval Station in
a wide range of public service
activities such as the Mayport
Waterfront Partnership, the
First Coast Metro Planning
Organization and Jacksonville's
Transit Authority Advisory
Committees to name a few. In
1993, Hull was appointed the
station's Cultural Services
Manager, a position responsible
for the identification, protec-
tion and preservation of historic
places and a number of arche-
ological resources. Last year,
he designed a memorial marker
for the old Mayport cemetery
which will serve as a permanent
reminder of the areas historic
significance.
Although his gathering was
meant to be for his honor, Hall
was the first to thank his co-
workers for their hard work and
dedication.
"My greatest honor is work-
ing with such great people,"
said Hull with a smile after cer-
emonial plaques and certificates
were given to him.
Perhaps the best tribute to
the retiring Homer Hull came
from true and heart felt words
from close friend and supervi-
sor Mike McVann who simply
said, "Homer is a true gentle-
man. The two adjectives I think
of when I look at Homer are
quiet and dignity."
