Sna iguana de "cierta edad" es algo bello. Despues
de visitar Panama en 1973, el biologo Gordon M.
Burghardt quedo cautivado. Entusiasmado por
Stan Rand, quien dirigio y facility el studio modemo del
comportamiento de la iguana, Burghardt paso afios estudi-
ando la iguana verde. Gran parte de la investigation basic
se lievo a cabo en, o muy cerca de, las instalaciones del
Smithsonian en la isla de Barro Colorado, en el lago Gatun.
En su studio, Burghardt indica que la apariencia prehistori-

A n iguana "of a certain age" is a thing of beauty. Af-
ter visiting Panama in 1973, biologist Gordon M.
Burghardt became entranced. Encouraged by Stan
Rand, who pioneered and facilitated the modem study of
iguana behavior, Burghardt spent years studying the green
iguana. Much of the ground breaking research was done
on or near the Smithsonian's research island, Barro Colo-
rado, in Gatun Lake. In his study, Burghardt stated that
the green iguana's prehistoric appearance and distinctive
head bob displays ensure that they generate human inter-

brillante a uno mas opaco, o un verde-gris con lines negras.

Green iguanas can be found in many different shades, rang-
ing from bright green to a dull, grayish-green with black
stripes. Although they have been known to grow to seven
feet, mature green iguanas are usually between four and six
feet, including their splendid tail, which can make up about
half the body length.

Iguanas have long fingers, claws, good senses of hearing
and smell, and superb vision, and possess a row of spines
along their backs and along their tails which helps to protect
them from predators. Their long tail is also quite sharp, and
is snapped in the air as a defense mechanism. The tail can
also break off if caught by a predator, but grows back with-
out permanent damage.

Green iguana skin is very water resistant, and tough, to
avoid cuts and scratches. The coloring of the skin helps
camouflage the green iguana, allowing them to blend in
easily to their surroundings to remain undetected by preda-

pecial que agrandan para aparentar ser mas grandes, ya sea para
intimidar a los depredadores o para impresionar a las hembras.
Usan la papada y la coronilla para interactuar socialmente de
diferentes formas... para saludar a un camarada o para cortejar
con su possible parej a. Ambos, hembra y macho, pueden alma-
cenar grasa debajo de sus mandibulas y en sus cuellos durante
periods donde no hay much comida disponible.

Las iguanas son presa de las aguilas y su temor hacia ellas se
convierte en su mayor debilidad para ser atrapadas. El canto
de un aguila hace que la iguana se quede petrificada haciendo
ficil su capture. Por su popularidad como mascota o como ali-
mento -en America Latina se dice que la came de iguana sabe
a la came de gallina- la iguana es presa de los humans tam-
bi6n. Aun no estan consideradas en peligro de extinci6n, pero
la Convenci6n Intemacional de Especies Salvajes de Flora y
Fauna en Peligro de Extinci6n las ha incluido en el Ap6ndice
II, lo que significa que "su trato debe ser controlado para no
lastimar ni poner en peligro estas species en el future".

Alguna vez comun en ambos escenarios, tanto en la zona ur-
bana como la campestre de Panama, la iguana verde es un
espectaculo digno de ver. Hoy en dia, ver una iguana es aun
mis emocionante, por su reducido numero. Sin embargo, debe
fijarse y observarlas rapido, ya que son ligeras y desaparecen
de la vista en un instant. [ i

these iguanas can dive from trees into water, and swim well. A
sturdy lizard, the green iguana can fall 40-50 feet to the ground
without getting hurt! Male green iguanas have a special flap
of skin called the dewlap which they can raise to appear big-
ger than they really are, either to intimidate predators, or to
impressive females. They use the dewlap and "head bobs" in a
variety of "social" interactions ... from greeting a fellow igua-
na to courting a possible mate. Both male and female green
iguanas can store fat under their jaws and in their necks for
times when there is not much food available.

Green iguanas are preyed upon by hawks and their fear of
hawks is exploited as a ploy to catch them in the wild. The
sound of a hawk's whistle or scream makes the iguana freeze
and it becomes easier to capture. Because of their popularity
in the pet trade and as a food source in Latin America (igua-
na meat is said to taste like chicken), the green iguana is also
prey to humans. While they are not considered an endangered
species, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species of Wild Fauna and Flora lists them in Appendix II
which means "their trade must be controlled so as to not harm
the species in the future."

Once common throughout both urban areas and the country-
side in Panama, the green iguana is a majestic sight to see.
Today, their diminished numbers make them even more of a
treat to spot. However, you must look quickly because they
are fleet of foot and can be gone in an instant. [M

Son las cuatro de la mahiana... un repique de tam-
bores y de clarines nos levanta... anuncian el inicio
de las conmemoraciones del mes de la patria de los
panamehos: son las famosas Dianas de noviembre.

Las Dianas constituyen la forma particular de los paname-
hios para despertar, homenajear y saludar a los altos fun-
cionarios que gobiernan la Republica: president, vicepresi-
dente, jefes de instituciones bomberiles y policiales.

Como dije, el sonido es de alegria, aunque estruendoso. Se
improvisan sones y tamboreras, se mezclan ritmos locales
con foraneos, pero el prop6sito es uno: recorder con alegria
las fiestas de la patria.

Para Panama, al igual que para el resto del continent
americano, la celebraci6n de la independencia es, tal vez, el
event mas important de todas las fiestas que se celebran
en el afno; quizas porque todos participamos de ella sin im-
portar credo religioso o politico, sexo o condici6n social. Es
la libertad, el orgullo de ser aut6nomos.

Panama, como el resto de paises del continent, se llena de
colors, de listones, de banderas, de polleras, de sombre-
ros pintados y ocuehos, de music "nacionalista" y tipica.
Suenan en la radio la Marcha Panama de Eduardo Maduro
o Patria de Ruben Blades. La alegria se extiende hasta la

nouncing the start of Panama's month long patriotic
commemorations of independence.

The "Dianas," a revered and time honored tradition, are
small drum and bugle corps of musicians who kick off the
month-long patriotic celebrations by serenading and wak-
ing dignitaries before dawn on the third of November.
Uniquely Panamanian, they awake, pay respect and salute
all who govern and serve the nation. Their revelry awakes
the president, vice-president, heads of institutions, and the
police and fireman.

Although clamorous, it is an unmistakably joyful sound.
Improvised drum rolls and bleating bugles of mixed origin,
local and foreign resound with one objective ... a gleeful
celebration of the patriotic holidays.

For Panama, like the rest of the Americas, independence
celebrations are among the most important holidays of the
year. Perhaps it is because, in spite of creed, race religion,
politics, gender or social strata, liberty and the pride of au-
tonomy stands at the center.

Like all countries, Panama festoons itself in its colors, and
adorns itself in flags, polleras, and typical hats to the tune

Pues bien, los panamehos tenemos todo noviembre, como
dije, para celebrar nuestras efem6rides patrias:

Tres de noviembre de 1903: ciento seis afios de separacion
de la hermana Republica de Colombia (no se dieron
batallas, ni corri6 sangre).
Cuatro de noviembre de 1903: ciento seis afios de tener
nuestra bandera tricolor (disehada por Manuel E. Amador y
confeccionada por Maria Ossa de Amador).
Cinco de noviembre de 1903: ciento seis afios de consoli-
daci6n de la separaci6n de Panama de Colombia (este hecho
se da en la Ciudad de Colon en la Costa Atlantica).
Diez de noviembre de 1821: ciento ochenta y ocho afios de
la primera declaraci6n de independencia de Panama de

the night when the skies are lit with fireworks and everyone
attends very formal official dinners and dances, or very in-

Without doubt, Panama celebrates its independence for
almost the entire month of November; the month during
which occurred all the events that defined the political per-
sonality of this Central American nation. What....? How
is that? Panamanians have all of November to feverishly
observe their patriotic festivities and it happens like this --

3 November, 1903 The bloodless, battle-less separation
from our sister country of Colombia.

4 November, 1903 Our tri-color flag, designed by Manuel
E. Amador and sewn by Maria Ossa de Amador.

5 November, 1903 The act of separation of Panama from
Colombia was ratified in the city of Colon on the Atlantic
coast.

10 November 1821 Panama first declared independence,
from Spain; an act now known as the "First cry for indepen-
dence in the village of Los Santos" (El grito de Los Santos).

Espaha (hecho conocido como Primer Grito de Independen-
cia de La Villa de Los Santos).
Dieciocho de noviembre de 1840: ciento sesenta y nueve
afios de la creaci6n de la primera Republica panamefia al
separamos, por un aho, de Colombia (se trata del Estado
Libre del Istmo).

tPensaron que alli terminaban las fiestas... ? No, siguen dos
mis:
Dieciocho de noviembre de 1903: ciento seis afios de la
firma del tratado que dio origen al actual Canal de Panama
(Tratado Hay- Bunau Varilla).
Veintiocho de noviembre de 1821: ciento ochenta y ocho
afios de consolidaci6n de la independencia de Panama de
Espaha (sin derramamiento de sangre).

Todo noviembre esta tenido de rojo, azul y blanco: los edifi-
cios publicos y privados, las plazas, las avenidas y las tien-
das comerciales hacen gala de la decoraci6n tricolor.

Las calls y avenidas, por donde pasara el desfile de las en-
tidades civicas y privadas, muestran las tarimas de los fun-
cionarios publicos, las instalaciones de los medios de comu-
nicaci6n, que transmitiran para los que prefieran quedarse
en casa todos los acontecimientos del desfile; pero, lo mas
llamativo es que las calls estaran saturadas de banderas,
de families y observadores, de vendedores ambulantes de

as the first Panamanian republic, in a separation from Co-
lombia that lasted only one year.

So, you think all these patriotic events end here ... ? No,
there are actually two more --
18 November 1903 The document that gave birth to the
Panama Canal, the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty.
28 November 1821 Panama's bloodless independence from
Spain.
All of November is bathed in red, blue and white; buildings,
public and private alike, plazas, businesses, and stores drape
themselves in festive decor. The parade routes are lined
with viewing platforms for public dignitaries and the media
transmits the activities to those who prefer to stay home and
enjoy the gala from their sofa. However, the main event
is in the flag saturated streets -- families, observers, street
vendors selling everything from bottled water to meat on a
stick, "raspao"(snow cones) to umbrellas, and, just in case,
flags and more flags of every size.

Children everywhere are heard chanting a popular refrain as
they wave their little flags to and fro: "The third of Novem-
ber comes, the third of November goes and I with my little
flag salute Panama."

los espectadores, los cuales regalaran aplausos a las mejores
interpretaciones y a las mejores formaciones.

Son ya las seis de la mahana y las Dianas se escuchan a lo
lejos. Los primeros rayos de luz le recuerdan a sus musicos
que tienen que detener el entusiasmo para dar inicio a los
actos oficiales: saludo de la bandera, te deum y desfiles.

Bueno, creo que debo apurarme o no podre conseguir una
buena ubicaci6n para ver, en primera fila, el paso de las
delegaciones con sus banderas nacionales y estandartes, los
cuadros de honor, los ejercicios de las batuteras, los capi-
tanes con sus batallones de estudiantes haciendo maniobras
militares, los clarines, los tambores...

jVamos... vamos... o llegaremos tarde!

Schools, the firemen and the police all attract much of at-
tention as they goose-step along the route to the beat of
military marches in a country with no military. They carry
sabers and rifles that ironically seem to thrill the spectators.
The spectators show their appreciation for the best routines
and formations by responding with enthusiastic applause.

It is 6 am now and the "Dianas" are heard in the distance.
Dawn has broken, reminding the musicians that they must
get on with their duties of the day, saluting the flag, the te
duem, and the parades.

Well, I guess I should hurry as well or I will not find a good
spot to watch from, in the front row where I can see them
all pass in front of me -- the delegations of flag bearers, the
honor squadrons, the baton twirlers, the captains of the stu-
dent battalions marching in formations of military precision
and ... the bugles and the drums ...

Hurry, let's go... or we will be late.

hermosos sombreros de rayas blancas fueron creados en

la construcci6n del ferrocarril y el canal. Sin embargo, en
Panama es otro el sombrero rayado reconocido como icono
de la historic y herencia national, creado aqui, en el istmo.

El hermoso sombrero rayado de Panama es usado con

disefios de sus alas pueden ser blancas con delgadas rayas

There was a time in recent history that the world's
well dressed men did not go out in the tropics or in the sum-
mer without their Panamas. These lovely white straw hats
were made in Ecuador and became popular in Panama dur-

However, it is another straw hat that Panamanians recog-
nize as an icon of their nationality and heritage, one made
right here on the isthmus.

Panama' beautiful woven straw hats vary depending on
where in the country they are made, and are worn with pride
in all levels of society. The designs in their weave range
from white with slim black borders, favored by the men
in Azuero, to "Los Pintados" (the painted ones) that look
like labyrinths of fine black lines woven into the "vueltas"
(rounds) of circling braid that form the hat. The pintado is
popular in Cocle where the majority of "sombreros tipicos"
(typical hats) are made. White, or of variegated patterns,
these are the hats of choice throughout the country and form
part of the national costume for Panamanian men. They
are, like Ecuador's more famous "Panama," made of natu-
ral fiber. The "tipicos" are usually woven of fibers from the

El paso final del process es cocerlas y darles
forma de sombrero con un molde. La fabricaci6n
de sombreros es frecuentemente un negocio fa-
miliar, y tanto los moldes como los disefios son
orgullosamente pasados de generaci6n en gener-
acion.

Ya sean blancos o con patrons en negro, estos
son los sombreros de preferencia en el pais, y
a su vez forman parte del vestido tipico de los
hombres. Al igual que los Panama Hat del Ec-
uador, estos tambien son hechos de fibra natu-
ral. Los sombreros tipicos estan hechos de una
plant llamada junco o tambien de bellota, y son
cocidos con pita.
Los sombreros mas rusticos, conocidos como
los de siete vueltas, son usados por campesinos,
granjeros, o cualquiera que se dedique a traba-

El numero de vueltas en un sombrero deter-
mina la textura y el precio del mismo. Un buen
sombrero promedio tiene entire doce y quince
vueltas, toma de tres a seis semanas hacerlo,
y cuesta entire 30 y 100 dolares, todo depend
del cometido final del sombrero. Los sombreros
mis especiales son los que tienen mis de quince
vueltas, usualmente se llevan para bodas y fies-
tas, o s6lo como un simbolo de status. Esto es
lo que represent un Rolex o una carter Chanel
en otras sociedades. Un excelente sombrero de

Los troncos mutilados de los gigantes del bosque
amarrados entire si forman docenas de cuadrilateros
flotantes, mas grandes que canchas de basquet, que
son llevados aguas abajo. La deforestaci6n, product del
advance de la frontera agricola-ganadera y de las actividades
madereras y mineras en el Amazonas, queda registrada en
cada una de mis imagenes.

Asi comienza, en el puerto de Pucallpa del Peru, nues-
tra aventura con destino a la comunidad Santa Rosa de
Dinamarca, una aldea poblada por mas de 400 nativos de la
etnia Shipibo Conibo, conocedores de las plants medicina-
les de los bosques amaz6nicos.

Voy a visitar al medico traditional Antonio Vazquez para
conocer los secrets de las medicines naturales y los mis-
terios de la Ayahuasca, o yague, conocida como la reina de
las plants medicinales por todos los grupos indigenas de la
gran Amazonia. Se trata de la mas sagrada y poderosa.
A lo largo de la ruta, la devastaci6n de las selvas es tragica.
Me pregunto: tcuanto podra durar la farmacia natural de la
amazonia si se continuan talando los bosques al ritmo acel-

deforestation, a product of the expanding frontiers of agri-
culture, lumbering and mining.

This is how our adventure from Pucallpa in Peru to Santa
Rosa de Dinamarca, a village of 400 natives, with the wis-
dom of the Amazon's medicinal plants, the Shipibo Conibo.
I am travelling to meet the traditional doctor, Antonio
Vazquez and learn the secrets of ayahuasca, or yague,
known to all the area's indigenous tribes as the queen of
medicinal plants.

Along the way, the devastation of the jungle is tragic and I
ask myself, "how long can the Amazon's natural pharmacy
endure if they continue to cut down the trees at the cur-
rent rate?" And, I think, if they continue and wipe out the
medicinal plants, many people will die because this is the
pharmacy of the poor. At the same time, it is a source for
the pharmaceutical industry because it is in tropical forest

Anclamos frente a Santa Rosa de Dinamarca. En un am-
plio claro en la selva se destaca el "hospital" de Antonio.
Muchos nativos llegan de la profundidad del bosque para
curarse gracias a la medicine traditional que alli practican.
Antonio me muestra y explica las virtudes de docenas de
plants curativas de su jardin. Luego, comenzamos una
caminata hacia el coraz6n del bosque en busqueda de la
ayahuasca, una plant medicinal que segun los nativos es la

We anchor at Santa Rosa de Dinamarca; there is a large
clearing there and what is known as the "hospital" of An-
tonio. Many natives come from deep within the jungle to
be cured, free of charge, in their traditional ways. Antonio
shows me his garden of medicinal plants and explains their
virtues to me. Later, we set out on a hike into the heart of
the forest in search of ayahuasca, considered by the natives
to be the most potent against all evils of body and spirit
With Antonio in the lead, everywhere I see evidence of the
assaulted forest, where once there were trees, there are pas-
tures. You no longer can find the forest's giants close to the
village. Instead, after hiking for two hours, we arrive at the
border of deforestation, a wall of vegetation, it opens its
"door" and we enter an intact portion of the Amazon's for-
est. On our way, there are many surprises; Antonio offers us
a master class on native medicine by showing us plants that
combat diverse diseases. He is a living encyclopedia of the
world of vegetation.

At last he finds ayahuasca, an ancient vine, more than 100
years old encircling a large tree; winding up and reaching
out, it dominates all the giant trees in its area. There, in the
silence of the forest, there is a soothing feeling of solace.
Upon returning to the "hospital," Antonio and his sons pre-

Finalmente, ante mi, se eleva una liana longeva de aya-
huasca, una anciana de mas de 100 afos que retuerce su

a su alrededor. Alli, en el silencio del bosque, se siente algo
sobrecogedor. De retomo al "hospital", Antonio y sus hijos
preparan la ayahuasca que tomaremos en la noche. Prom-

En la serenidad del "hospital", Antonio Vazquez, medico
traditional de la etnia shipibo del Peru, esta vestido con
tunica traditional; su hijo, esposa y un sobrino lo asisten
en el ritual.

Antonio toma un trago de ayahuasca luego de damos una
porci6n en un pequeho vaso ceremonial. Al rato de beberla,
disehos geometricos y luces se intensifican gradualmente
en mi vision. Me veo cubierto por una red de luz rojiza
mientras los cantos del maestro Antonio resuenan podero-
samente. En mi mente, disehos, formas y aves luminosas
palpitan como un coraz6n al ritmo del cantar.

Mi cuerpo hierve en fiebre, sudor y temblores. Me sacudo

In the serenity of the "hospital," Antonio Vasquez, "doctor"
of traditional medicine, is dressed in his traditional ethnic
Peruvian shipibo tunic, and assisted by his son, wife, and
nephew. He takes a sip of ayahuasca and then serves us a
small portion in a ceremonial glass. Shortly, I see geometric
designs and intensified colors; I see myself covered in a net-
work of reddish light while Antonio's chants powerfully re-
sound inside me. In my mind, designs, forms, luminescent
birds palpitate, like a heart, to the rhythm of the chants. My
body boils, it trembles in fever and sweat. A tremendous
tremor consumes me and I feel the ayahuasca invading ev-
ery comer of my being. An intense light keeps rhythm with
the chants illuminating the right side of my belly and it stays
there intensely focusing on this part of my body.

Long hours have passed, in ceremony with the ayahuasco,
new energy, is born inside of me; I feel clean. Awhile later,
the almost full moon retreats, only to be seen in illuminat-
ed clouds. A sensation of harmony with myself, my loved
ones, and life dominates me here in Antonio's "hospital;" I
feel as though I am in a temple.
The time to leave the forest of the shipibos has come. I have
learned a lot about the potential of this natural pharmacy for
the poor and medical science alike and I have felt the power

nadas. En armonia conmigo y los mios, con la vida; en el
hospital de Antonio me domina la sensaci6n de estar en un
templo.

Ha llegado la hora de regresar del bosque de los shipibos.
He aprendido sobre el potential de la farmacia natural para
los mas pobres, que es el bosque. Pero tambien para la cien-
cia medical, y he conocido el poder de la ayahuasca, que
require mas investigaci6n cientifica para entender su poder
de curaci6n.

De retorno a mi mundo, mientras repaso las notas de mi dia-
rio, el recuerdo de aquella noche reveladora sigue latente.
He seguido investigando y mi curiosidad me ha llevado a
escuchar los testimonios de gente que asegura haberse sa-
nado de enfermedades como cancer, alcoholism, sida y
muchas otras, gracias a la ayahuasca. Esta, al igual que otras
plants muy valiosas, podria perderse para siempre y con
ella la posibilidad de enfrentarnos a las enfermedades si se
siguen deforestando los bosques.

Por lo pronto, el maestro Antonio se ha convertido en un
embajador de los conocimientos medicinales de los shipibo,
desde hoy estara Panama para participar en el program Al
Natural de Fundaci6n Albatros Media, y para compartir la
sabiduria de las plants de poder, heredada de sus ancestros

As I review my diary on my return to my world, I have
latent recollections of that revealing night. I continue to
investigate and have heard testimonials of those who insist
they have been cured of diseases such as cancer, alcohol-
ism, AIDS, and many other ailments, thanks to ayahuasca.
Yet, this and other valuable plants may be lost forever and,
with them, possible cures if the deforestation goes on.
Antonio has now become an ambassador of the shipibo's
medicinal wisdom and he is here in Panama to share his in-
herited knowledge of powerful plants, and participate in the

grano se pierde en los comienzos de la civilizaci6n.
Su importancia es tal en algunas cultures, como la
maya, que el POPOL VUH, su libro sagrado, le atribuye
el origen del hombre. Y es que el maiz (Zea mays) tam-
bien conocido como choclo, millo y elote forma parte de la
dieta de millones de personas en America y gran parte del
mundo. Perteneciente a la familiar de las gramineas plantss
que tienen las semillas en espigas), se conocen cientos de
variedades y se puede consumer en estado natural, en forma
de una deliciosa mazorca hervida. Convertido en harina da
forma a tortillas, arepas, bollos, tamales, pupusas, polenta,
cachapas, nachos... tse imaginan ver una emocionante

The stuff that fables and legends are made of, corn's
history begins at the dawn of civilization. In some
cultures, Mayan's for example, its status of impor-
tance was so elevated that in their most sacred book the
"Popol Vuh" the Mayans linked it to man's very existence.
"Zea mays" is known by many names -- such as corn,
maize, maiz, choclo, millo, and elote among others, what-
ever it is called, it is an important part of the diet of millions
of inhabitants on this continent, and of the rest of the world.

Part of the grain family corn's hundreds of varieties are
consumed in as many variations, from the simply natural
form of a delicious boiled cob to corn meal flour, tortillas,
arepas, bollos, tamales, pupusas, polenta, and nachos. Can
you imagine going to the movies without popcorn? And
many people just could not imagine starting their day with-
out their bowl of Corn Flakes. But, corn is more than that;
together with wheat and rice, it is among the most con-
sumed grains on the planet. Its nutritional value is impres-
sive; it is rich in carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals,
and its oil has many of the healthy properties found in olive
oil. With uses ranging from pig feed to textile fiber, nothing
is wasted on a corn plant. Best of all, it is affordable and
accessible and with it you can prepare delicious dishes just

xtendiendose desde el Oceano Pacifico al Atlantico,
"El Tap6n del Darien" encierra una rica diversidad
cultural y ecol6gica. Hay un area protegida dentro
del tap6n, El Parque Nacional de Darien, que cubre un mil-
Ion de acres, convirtiendolo en el area protegida mas grande
del pais. La especie de arbol mas predominante de las tier-
ras baj as selvaticas del Darien es el Cuipo (Cavanillesia pla-
tanifolia), una especie native de Panama y el arbol favorite
para anidar del Aguila Harpia (Harpia harpvia), el majes-
tuoso pajaro national de Panama. Desafortunadamente,
ambos estan en peligro de extinci6n, El Aguila Harpia y el
Cuipo.

El Cuipo puede vivir cientos de afios y es un verdadero gi-
gante, con una altura aproximada de 48 metros (160 pies)
desde tierra, algunos crecen hasta 60 metros (197 pies) con
un tronco que alcanza un diametro de 2.5 metros (8 pies). El
tronco es recto, sin ramas e hinchado en la base. La corteza
es lisa, except por unos anillos que se enrollan alrededor
del tronco espaciados por various metros. Sin ramas en su

Stretching from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans, the
"Darien Gap" encompasses rich ecological and cul-
tural diversity. There is one protected area within the
gap, the Darien National Park, which covers a million acres,
making it the largest protected area in the country. The pre-
dominant tree species in the lowland forest of the Darien
is the Cuipo (Cavanillesia platanifolia), a native species of
Panama and the favorite nesting tree for the Harpy eagle
(Harpia harpvia), Panama's majestic national bird. Sadly,
both the Cuipo and the Harpy are endangered.

The Cuipo can live for hundreds of years and is a true gi-
ant, standing approximately 160 feet from the ground in the
forest canopy; some grow as high 60m (197 ft) tall with a
trunk reaching 2.5m (8ft) in diameter. The truck is straight,
without buttresses, and swollen at the base. The bark is very
smooth, except for rings that wrap around the trunk every
few meters. Branchless for most of its length, the tree ends
in a beautiful, round top. Leaves are large, almost round, on
older trees, but are palmate and almost square on younger
ones.

naranja crecen en la punta de las ramas mientras que la fruta, enorme en
tamafio, se asemeja al coraz6n de una manzana y puede tener hasta 15
cm. (6 pulgadas) de longitud, cambiando de color verde a rosado mien-
tras madura. Cuando se llena de frutas adquiere un aspect magnifico.
Cuando se deshoja, durante la estaci6n seca, produce flores y luego las
frutas; la fruta desciende parcialmente, flotando en el aire creando una
alfombra sobre la tierra.

Las semillas aceitosas del Cuipo son comestibles con un sabor a mani.
La etnia Kuna cree que el Cuipo se puede utilizar como una cura para

several kilometers away, since the crowns are large and emerge above all
the trees around them. One of the truly deciduous species in the area,
the Cuipo sheds its leaves during the dry season which lasts from January
to April. Usually blooming in March or April, the Cuipo's fruit ripens in
mid-April. The beautiful, pinkish-orange, flowers bloom on the branch
ends while the huge fruit resembles an apple core and can be up to 15 cm
(6 inch) long, changing from green to pink as it ripens. When bearing
fruit, the tree looks magnificent. When leafless in the dry season, it pro-
duces flowers and then bears its fruit; the fruit flutter on wings through
the air, carpeting the ground beneath.

Oily Cuipo seeds are edible and taste like peanuts. The Kuna believe the
Cuipo can be used as a cure for those who are underweight. When the
patient bathes in an infusion made of Cuipo bark for sixteen concurrent
days, his or her weight should increase. In addition to its weight gaining
benefits, inhabitants of the jungle use the Cuipo's rubbery resin to heal
infected wounds. As it is a source of water, this tree can be a lifesaver
to those lost in the jungle as water can be had by cutting open a piece of
a Cuipo's root.

Mechanically speaking, however, it is the strength of the Cuipo that is its
most remarkable feature. According to Karl J. Niklas, in his book Plant
Biomechanics, the wood of the Cuipo tree is the strongest measured plant
tissue for density, and surpasses its "cousin," the famous balsa wood, in
lightness. Wood of Cuipo has been used to replace balsa in construc-

de ejemplares de gran tamafio en la isla de Barro Colorado
y por lo menos uno en la isla Tigre, donde Panama oper6
un santuario primario international entire 1996 y 2000. Esto
lo se porque en una de mis visits a la isla, me impresion6
tanto la belleza del Cuipo que lo abrace en silencio durante
various minutes. La Isla Tigre ya no es accessible, pero un
viaje a la vieja selva en Barro Colorado para ver los Cuipos

If you don't have time for a trip to the Darien, you can see
the Cuipo in the forests of Gamboa. There are a number
of large individuals on Barro Colorado Island and there is
also at least one on Isla Tigre, where from 1996 to 2000,
Panama operated an international primate sanctuary. This
I know because during one of my visits to Isla Tigre, I was
so taken by the Cuipo's beauty that I stood quietly with my
arms around it for several minutes. You can no longer ac-
cess Isla Tigre, but a trip to see the Cuipos in the old forest
on Barro Colorado Island is well worth it. There is also a
group visible from the Gamboa Bridge, on the south side
of the Chagres River, and another on the north side of the
river, visible from the Gamboa resort. Wherever you may
find a Cuipo, it is a sight to behold, perhaps surpassed only
by witnessing one hosting a visit from the incredible Harpy.
