Cooperative Agreement between the Nuclear and Radiological Engineering Department
(NRE) and the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida
Purpose
This document establishes a cooperative program for the integration of Hauck NRE library
holdings into the online library catalog of the University of Florida. The goal of this effort is to
expand access and university awareness of the resources held in NRE in support of the
University's mission of research and teaching.
NRE Library Description
The Hauck NRE Library was established in March, 1981 in honor of Dr. Frederick A. Hauck, a
longtime beneficiary of the department and the university. A valuable educational and research
asset to both students and faculty for over twenty years, the Library houses a body of works
concerning basic sciences (math, chemistry, and physics) and engineering (e.g., electrical
circuits, materials science, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics), as well as nuclear
sciences and engineering textbooks and related reference books. An inventory conducted in
June 2005 listed the library contents as follows. Figures are for volumes unless otherwise noted.
3,599 Books
262 Proceedings
1,131 Reports
446 Dissertations/Theses/ Projects

photocopying and interlibrary loan are available for a charge. The library is open Monday through
Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. It is closed on University holidays.
Collection Development
Monies for collection development come from the Hauck Foundation, NRE's Department of
Energy Match Program, and NRE's overhead account. Since its establishment, an average of
approximately $3,300 per year has been spent on the purchase of books, hiring of student
helpers, and renovation of the library. The NRE Department will make the necessary funds for
continued maintenance and upgrade of the Hauck NRE Library.
COMMITMENTS
NRE
NRE will catalog items using the Libraries' catalog technical client. Bibliographic records will be
derived from the UF library catalog and alternative sources or created via a cataloging template.
Article level cataloging will not be done and those materials are excluded from this agreement.
NRE will assume full responsibility for maintaining its library collection. When items are
withdrawn or lost, NRE will update the library catalog.
NRE will maintain a separate circulation system.
George A. Smathers Libraries
The Libraries will provide access to its catalog technical client. Logins will be restricted to those
NRE staff and students who are responsible for record creation and maintenance. In addition,
the Libraries will create a location for NRE within the library catalog as outlined below:
OWN code: NR
Sublibrary code: UFANR
Sublibrary display: Nuclear and Radiological Engr.
Collection code: GEN
Collection display: 214 Nuclear Sciences Building
The Cataloging and Metadata Department, George A. Smathers Libraries, will provide training
and technical assistance as needed.
The costs associated with storage and searching catalog records will be underwritten by the
Florida Center for Library Automation as part of its commitment to support the University of
Florida Libraries.
