A Chronology
1. Welcome visitor to the Silversmith Shop, an exhibition representing
the British period in St. Augustine History. Spanish lost Florida
to the British in 1763 and kept it for twenty years.

2. Main Themes
(a) British rule resulted in greater prosperity. The British
exploited the environment to develop cash crops such as
[ indigo just prior to the War for Independence.
(DrWith greater prosperity came an increase in the number of
craftsmen, including such skilled craftsmen as silversmiths
(b) Life of a silversmith
(1) works out of his home common for craftsman of the 18th
century
(2) aided by slaves (slavery increased as a result of planta-
tion system)

1. Architecture fireplaces, windows on a larger scale bv the British.
Changes were permanent and even into the Second Spanish Period.
This is a First Spanish Period coauina 1st floor, remodeled during
the British Period.
2. Garden Crops Florida becomes more self-supporting; there is
increased trade with the English world.
