SUBJECT : Report of time


Friday, January 6th. Checked in in the morning. Started work with Bill Sanchez. Checked
drawings and the building with previous notes listing the starting jobs for the workmen
that were to show up Monday morning. Our first decision was to build the two inside
partition walls to strengthen the outside walls before we disturb the second floor. For
the carpenter and laborer, we decided to shape up the balance of wall boards and take
the modern flooring up on the second floor.

Saturday, January 7th. Bill and I checked over some of the jobs he has been working on
and checked over all of the door and window jambs on all of the old buildings in town.
We were confused in the type of old jambs that we had found in the building and the
earlier type that we had seen in various old buildings. We conferred with Al Manucy and
met him at the Old House. We went over his records and he Made a date to meet us at the
building Monday to see what we had found and help us to solve our problems.

Sunday, January 8. I checked types of hardware and drove out to a second-hand lot on
Route No. 1 looking for materials. Worked on the second floor framing to decide on the
roof rafter location. Made sketches of type of window frames to be used on first floor
so we could also check this with Al on Monday when he arrived.

Monday, January 9th. Mr. Manucy arrived and we started checking over the door jambs and
we were quite confused on the location that shows on Mr. Stewart's drawings and what we
were finding in a partition wall and had come to the conclusion to do what we had found
in the partition walls. I made a drawing of the type of jamb, also a template, and the
location and gave it to Bill to give to the mason to cut coquina blocks from in the
bhape of the door jamb. We went out on the island to check on the coquina and check with
the man that is going to cut the dizes.

Tuesday, January 10th. Mr. Manucy showed up again and did a lot of checking on the two
sides of the partition walls which are shown in Mr. Stewart's drawings that they are
both approximately 11 inches thick. The one we are working on now is approximately nine
inches wide and we have decided to do exactly the same on this wall. We also checked on
the type of header over the door jambs and found there were three different styles in
this building. We decided on the type that was going into the wall the mason was working
on. The balance of the day was put into making drawings of the roof line and deciding on
whether or not to put up a temporary frame so that you may see it when you arrive at the
end of the week. It is not exactly the same as Mr. Stewart's drawing but we have reason
to make changes and you are free to correct these if you wish. The photographs show that
there was definitely a kick roof on the porch and you will also note that the height
Mr. Stewart shows on a drawing on second floor is 9' 8" from floor to plate. We have
measured this building and come up with 10' 7". Just how Mr,. Stewart determined the
9' 8" is a mystery to us all. He also centers the ridge from end of porch to porch and
we have changed it to wall to wall which throws his centers off approximately 1 feot.

Wednesday, January llth. Showed Mr. Manucy the drawings I had made on the roof line and
he seems to agree with what we are doing. Sometime today we hope to make some photographs
as the work proceeds and what we have uncovered for records. I have recommended buying
a cheap camera to take photos of things we uncover as we peel the building and also to
show the building as it proceeds with the construction.

1. Location of underground electric wires, telephone wires, gas line.

2. If second floor is to be used for office,water and sewers will have to
be concealed in walls.

3. Location of the electric panel board.

4. Location of electric plugs and lights.
