BUSINESS and labour
today reacted with shock to
the death last night of Dr
Eric Williams.
There was no immediate
reaction from the Guyana
Government, Foreign
Minister Rashleigh Jackson
said a ful message was
being prepared,
A spokesman for the
Secretariat of the
Caribbean Community
(Carcom) said an official
secretariat reaction to the
death might be put out this
afternoon.
President of the
Georgetown Chamber of
Commerce Mr Ernes
Christiani said the death of
Dr. Williams would be a
terrible loss, not only for
Trinidad and Tobago, but for
the entire Caricom. Even
though he was a dicult
partner (for the move-
ment) he was very much
respected."
According to Mr.
hristiani, the death also
came at a "difficult time"
for Trinidad and Tobago
because Dr. Williams was
"one of the stabilising fac>
tors" and was handling the
counmys high inflation and
related problems very well.
General Secretary of the
Guyana Agricultural and
General Workers Umon
(GAWU) Ram Karran said
he was "very shocked" at
the death.

BUSINESS and labour today reacted with shock to the death last night of Dr. Eric
Williams.
There was no immediate reaction from the Guyana Government. Foreign Minister

A spokesman for the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) said an
official secretariat reaction to the death might be put out this afternoon.
President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Mr. Ernest Christiani said the
death of Dr. Williams would be a terrible loss, not only for Trinidad and Tobago, but for
the entire Caricom. Even though he was a difficult partner (for the movement) he was
very much respected.
According to Mr. Christiani, the death also came at a "difficult lime" for Trinidad and
Tobago because Dr. Williams was "one of the stabilising factors" and was handling the
country's high inflation and related problems very well. General Secretary of the
Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) Ram Karran said he was "very
shocked" at the death.
General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (TUC) Joseph Pollydore was
not available for that body's reaction.
