Engagements and functions cancelled

THE GOVERNMENT has cancelled all engagements and functions planned for this week following
the death of Prime Minister, Dr. Eric Williams on Sunday night.

Dr. Williams, 69, was working with some of his advisers at his La Fantasie Road, St. Ann's official
residence on his proposed address to the nation at the inaugural ceremony of the TT$800 million (one
Trinidad dollar equals 41 cents US) iron and steel mill when he collapsed and died.

NINETEEN DAYS

Minister of Information, Mr. Patrick Manning, in a television broadcast this morning said flags on all
Government buildings would be flown at half-mast and the nation would go into mourning for 19 days
from today to April 17 (Good Friday).

Today, banks and business places closed their doors after learning of the death of the Prime
Minister in a national radio-television broadcast.

Tributes started pouring in from countries all of the Caribbean with Barbados Government pulling
down flags to half mast.

Some the late Prime Minister's sternest critics said that the nation has lost a great statesman.

Mr. Baadeo Panday, leader of the Opposition United Labour Front said that despite difference, he
had great respect and admiration for Dr. Williams.

President General of the powerful Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) said that as a mark of
respect his union would be calling off its solidarity move in the oil industry tomorrow to protest a delay
by Federation Chemicals Limited in settling a pay row.

All opposition parties have called off their outdoor meetings until the period of mourning is over.

No date or time has been set for the funeral but efforts would be made to have a State funeral
contrary to the wishes of Dr. Williams, who two years ago asked that when he died, give him a simple
funeral with close friends and relatives in attendance.
