LONDON Mon: (Cana)

COMMONWEALTH Secretary-General Shridath Ramphal today expressed sorrow at the
death of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Eric Williams. Dr. Williams' death
was announced this morning by the President of the Caribbean oil-producing republic, Mr.
Ellis Clarke.

Mr. Ramphal sent sympathy messages to President Clarke and the country's new Prime
Minister, Mr. George Chambers.

With the passing of Dr. Williams, the Commonwealth had lost one of its greatest sons, Mr.
Ramphal told President Clarke.

"The loss to Trinidad and Tobago is as great as was the value of his life and work and
vision to our entire region," added Mr. Ramphal, a former, foreign minister of neighboring
Guyana.

"I send to you and to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago and through you
to his family my deepest and most sincere expressions of sorrow on the loss of this great
man. Our world is the poorer for his going."

To Mr. Chambers, the Secretary General said: "as you assume the responsibilities of the
office of Prime Minister at this moment of great national and regional loss, I send you my
most sincere good wishes for your success and my assurance of every support that the
Secretariat can render to in the challenges that lie ahead."
