DR. WILLIAMS DIED OF HEART FAILURE

POLITICAL REPORTER

DR. ERIC WILLIAMS, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago for the past 18 years and
Chief Minister and Premier for the previous seven, died of acute heart failure on Sunday
night, it has been reported.

He succumbed at 8 p.m. and his death was officially announced 12 hours later by
President of the Republic, Mr. Ellis Clarke, plunging the nation into 19 days of mourning ...
until Good Friday.

Dr. Williams died, clad in his pyjamas, on his sofa in his private room at his official St. Ann's
residence, La Fantasie Road.

To the end, Dr. Eric Eustace Williams, the country's leader for the past 25 years, was
working on the nation's business.

During the afternoon, he was in consultation Professor Ken Julien, Chairman of the
National Advisory Council and teh National Energy Commission, and later with Senator
Mervyn De Souza, Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Minister of Caribbean
Community Affairs, and Rep. Errol Mahabir, Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Minister
of Energy and Energy-based Industries.

ERIC COMES HOME

The late Prime Mininster's body was removed from the official residence around 9:40 a.m.
yesterday, to the Clark and Battoo Funeral Home under police escort.

Dr. Williams' daughter, Erica, was immediately informed at her United States home of his
death and arrived home last night.

Also scheduled to come in are two other children from Canada Allistair and Pamela.

Simultaneous with the announcement of Dr. Williams' death, President Clarke announced
that he had appointed Rep. George Chambers, Minister of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries
and Minister of Industry and Commerce, as the new Parliament Minister following
consultation with Cabinet Ministers.

Dr. Williams was 69 years September 25, last year. He died six months after his 69th
birthday.

The late Prime Minister had obviously been ailing during the past few days.

On Monday last, he deviated from his usual silence in Parliament and at the end of a
debate made a statement which he said he had wanted to make a long time.

Dr. Williams, on his last day, was working on an address to deliver on Saturday evening the
at the formal opening of the Iron and Steel Corporation at Point Lisas.

Government has cancelled all public functions during the period of mourning.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced.
