Earthquake In Haiti:
Rescue Efforts Underway
As news from Haiti con-
tinues to worsen (see
below), rescue and relief
efforts have begun
around the world to help
victims of the strong
earthquake that hit the
region of Port au Prince
on Tuesday, January 12
at 5:53pm, Saint Barth
time. When the banks
opened here on Wednes-
day, Jean-Pierre Ballagny
opened two accounts at
the BNP for those who
would like to make dona-
tions-one in euros and
one in dollars-in the
name of "Lions Club
Haiti Disaster Fund."
Some of the funds col-
lected will be transferred
via Sister Jeanne Mau-
rice, the contact in Haiti
for the Lions Club in
Saint Barth, which has
previously sent aid to this
extremely poor country
often hit by disaster. On
Tuesday evening,
Adolphe Brin from the
Lions Club, was able to
speak to the nun whose
neighborhood endured
some damage but there
were no injuries to her or
those around here. She
did however see the col-
lapse of a mountainside
with hundreds of houses,
and the only successful
telephone communica-
tion with someone in
Port au Prince described
a city in chaos. The
remaining money raised
will go to NGOs who are
on their way to the scene
of the disaster.
In the same race against
the clock, the Rotary
Club also took action. On
Wednesday, this service
club ordered three Shel-
ter Boxes, a solution the
Haitian population will
certainly need. Invented
by Rotarian Tom Hender-
son, a former Royal
Navy search and rescue
diver, these survival box-
es cost 750 euros each
($1000) and contain a
check for 10 people,
rugs, blankets, a gas or
kerosene stove, kitchen
utensils, Jerrycans, a
water purification sys-
tem, and tools: saw, axe,
shovel, ropes, and mos-
quito netting, and activity
packet for kids. The
Rotary should also quick-
ly launch a collection
drive to help finance a
maximum number of
Shelterboxes.
By mid-morning on
Wednesday, Saint Barth
president Bruno Magras
issued a press release
inviting the population to
"respond favorably to the
requests of the various
associations and service
clubs," and announcing
that the territorial council
would deliberate quickly
in favor of financial par-
ticipation by the Collec-
tivity to contribute to
"the rescue effort and
humanitarian aid." The
Multi-Professional Eco-
nomic Council and the
Red Cross have also
mobilized and met to dis-
cuss a combined effort
by these two groups.
Haiti Fears
Inconceivable
Numbers of Dead
The numbers of bodies
and injured persons con-
tinue to multiple in the
streets of Port-au-Prince
on Wednesday as Haiti
awaited the horrific
results of the disaster,
which could comprise
more than 100,000 dead
according to the Haitian
prime minister. President
Ren6 Pr6val, who grant-
ed his first interview
after the earthquake on
Wednesday morning,
spoke of thousands of
dead in the Miami Her-
ald. "The parliament has
collapsed... hospitals
have collapsed. There are
a lot of schools that have
a lot of dead people in
them," said Pr6val, who
thanked the international
community for rushing to
Haiti's aid in its hour of
need. "A lot of people are
buried under buildings,"
added his wife, Elisabeth
Pr6val, in the same arti-
cle. Traumatized by the
magnitude 7 seismic
shock, many of Haitians
spent the night outdoors,
waiting for sunrise to
begin to catalogue the
dead and the damage. On
Wednesday, there was no
electricity and all means
of communication were
interrupted.

St Barth Music Festival off to Good Start
An evening of Mozart with fabulous
musicians, great singers, and an inter-
nationally acclaimed opera conduc-
tor... all at the Catholic Church in
Gustavia! This was the framework for
the opening night concert of the 26th
annual St Barth Music Festival. An
estimated 400 people attended the
concert, perhaps the largest audience
the festival has attracted in recent
years. Was this due to the quality of
the music and the performers? Per-
haps. But the fact that the first concert
was free (rather than the usual ticket
prices of $35 to $45) seems to have
helped draw this standing-room-only
crowd. It was a big risk on the part of
the festival director and organizing
committee: what if the concert had
been free and the audience was still
sparse? But happily that was not the
case and every pew was filled for a
concert that provided a preview of the
music to come. "We included some of
our best musicians and
singers to give you a taste
of the concerts on the pro-
gram this year," said festi-
val director Frances
Debroff .
Under the baton of Steven
Mercurio, the concert was
a huge success. Highlights included
Richard O'Neill's outstanding per-
formance in a Teleman Viola Concer-
to, Brian Lewis and Roger Myers in a
Mozart violin/viola duo, and this
year's quartet of singers warming up
their pipes for the annual opera
evening. Soprano Laura Pedersen,
mezzo-soprano Sarah Maria Punga,
tenor Scott Piper, and baritone Gino
Quilico brought the house down with
the finale: Rossini's Comic Duo for
Two Cats (and a well-timed comic
woof by the conductor).
The audience, regulars and newcom-
ers alike, were treated to a free concert
of world-class stature. Let's hope the
pews continue to be filled as over 40
musicians and singers perform
through January 20. Even at $45, the
tickets prices seem reasonable for the
sheer star power of the talent on stage.
Ellen Lampert-Greaux C: R Greaux
There is nothing more
adorable, and heart-warm-
ing, then seeing young
musicians performing in
concert. This Sunday, Janu-
ary 17, as part of the 26th
annual St Barth Music Fes-
tival, the island's non-profit
association, Saint Barth
Harmony, will present a free
concert at 4pm at the Angli-
can Church in Gustavia.
Sponsored by island resi-
dent, Nancy Latta, this is a
wonderful opportunity to
bring children to a concert
as well as offer encourage-
ment those who are playing.
"There will be five young
violinists and 10 guitarists,"
confirms Sophie Laplace,
president of Saint Barth
4
Harmony. The association
currently has three music
teachers: Rudi Laplace for
violin, Stephane Caro for
guitar, and Karina, a recent
addition for accordion. "The
two young accordionists are
not in the concert," notes
Laplace, but hopefully by
next year they will be ready
to perform. The violinists
will play traditional music
for beginners, while the gui-
tarists have a contemporary
repertoire adapted to their
musical tastes.
The young violins learn via
the popular Suzuki method,
and Rudi Laplace is a great
example of a student who
excelled and is now a music
teacher. "Music is an impor-
tant part of Saint Barth,"
says Laplace. "The goal of
Saint Barth Harmony is to
promote music to the chil-
dren on the island though
classes and music apprecia-
tion. We are going to organ-
ize some afternoons where
kids can touch musical
instruments for the first time
and get a taste of music in
the hope they develop an
interest in it. When a child
wants to play, and makes
that a priority, then it is such
a joy, a true passion and not
just an obligation."

Former Town Hall To Be Demolished
Demolition has begun on
Saint Barth's former town, a
historic building built on a
foundation of lava stone,
with an upper story of wood
that has been eaten away by
termites. Work began
almost two weeks ago and
should continue for another
two weeks. As of now, the
roof has been removed, as
well as old wooden walls
and concrete pillars. The
lower level of stone will not
be disturbed for now: that
depends on a decision made
by the territorial council
who will deliberate on the
need to push the new build-
ing back a few meters in
order to improve the flow of
traffic. This would mean
moving the foundation of
the building as opposed to
rebuilding on the exact spot
the Swedes laid those
stones in the late 18th cen-
tury. In the latter case, the
stone foundation would be
preserved.

Lotus, is in charge of the
project and was given a
simple brief: maintain the
style of the building, which
has been on the list of his-
toric monuments since
1995. It was once the home
of Swedish governors
before serving as town hall
once the island was
returned to the French.
In a telephone interview
last Monday, Sophie Oli-
vaud, director of the
island's technical services
office, confirmed that the
goal is to start the rebuild-
ing during 2010 after the
architectural plans have
been approved and con-
struction companies
respond to the RFP.
When completed, the new
building is intended to
house a courtroom as well
as space for training pro-
grams run by the Multi-
professional Economic
Council.
8,595 Residents As Of 2007
According to the results of
the last census taken on the
island in 2007 and pub-
lished on Thursday,
December 31, 2009 in the
Official French Journal, the
legal population of Saint
Barth included 8,595 resi-
dents as of January 1, 2008.
In contrast, the last census
was taken in 1999 and
comprised 6,852 people,
indicating that the popula-
tion grew by 25.43%. In
January 2008, the INSEE
(National Institute for Sta-
tistics and Economic Stud-
ies) estimated the popula-
tion of Saint Barth at 8,450
residents, by that number
was not legally validated.
Also at the end of Decem-
ber, the INSEE announced
that the legal population in
France had grown
61,795,550 residents, a fig-
ure which does not include
1,805,452 residents in over-
seas departments.
In keeping with the regula-
tions for overseas collectiv-
ities, the next census in
Saint Barth should take
place in 2012.

Six Performances On A Sailboat
On a voyage around the
world, acrobats Franck and
Delphine pulled into the
harbor late last week to
present two unusual per-
formances in Saint Barth.
This duo of "navig'artists"
were inspired by the circus,
dance, poetry, and theatre in
the creation of these two
silent productions initially
created for the Association
of the Vieux Port in Mon-
treal where the couple per-
formed over 150 shows,
using mast, boom, cables,
and other parts of their sail-
boat as a stage to exhibit
their acrobatic prowess.
Their first show, "The Navi-
gators," inspired by Buster
Keaton and silent films, is a
parody of navigational
maneuvers that pokes fun at
the mishaps of maladroit
navigators. The second
show, "Between Island and
Wing," deals with male-
female relationships in a
spectacle of aerial choreog-
raphy and acrobatics in a
duet that ranges from love,
humor and poetry to earth,
sea, and sky.

These unusual performanc-
es presented from port to
port represent the personal
adventure of this couple-
and their two young daugh-
ters-who lifted their
anchors in July 2004. Their
adventure has taken the
shape of a tour around the
world "to meet new people,
rather than wait for them to
come to us!" explained
Franck, in an interview in
front of the Wall House
where La Loupiote is
anchored. In terms of meet-
ing people, that takes care
of itself rather rapidly once
the shows are underway:
"We like to make sure our
performances are accessible
to the widest public possi-
ble," says Delphine.
Since they set sail in 2004,
Franck, Delphine, and their
girls, eight year-old Loeva
and Anja, who is not yet
two, have navigated from
Brittany to Morocco by way
of the Canary Islands and
Portugal, before going back
to Brittany, having tried out
their first shows during this
first year of travel.
From there, they crossed the
Atlantic to the Caribbean,
then up to Quebec and up
the Saint Lawrence River,
performing all along the
way.They did their shows in
Montreal, then Boston,
Newport, and Bermuda:
"We met an American in
Newport who thought the
people here should definite-
ly see our show, and con-
vinced us to come here. We
hope a lot of people come
to see us," adds Franck.
After their stay in Saint
Barth, La Loupiote will
head to Antigua, then
Grenada and Trinidad
before continuing around
the world via the Panama
Canal and a plunge into the
Pacific Ocean. For this
young couple, the adventure
continues!

Blue Zone Parking In
Blue Zone parking went into effect in
Gustavia as of Tuesday, December
15, as a means to help control traffic
and parking in the center of town. As
a result, cars belonging to people who
work in town, or people taking the
ferry, should not take up parking
spaces all day.
The idea is simple: drivers are
authorized to park for free for an hour
and a half when using a blue parking
disk: 2,000 copies of the disks were
printed and are available at the Hotel
de la Collectivite, the Tourist Office,
Effect Since December 15
and the Capitainerie (port office) .
The disk must be put in clear view on
the dashboard, against the windshield
of the car, indicating the starting time
for the 90 minutes of legal parking.
All cars must be moved after 90 min-
utes.
The "blue zones" are defined by new
signage and centralized in Gustavia
as follows:
Rue du Bord du Mer: along the
waterfront;
Rue de la Republique: the road from
the pharmacy to Le Select;
Rue de la France: from Le Select to
the quay;
Rue Place d'Armes: the left side of
the street from the waterfront to
Beranger;
Rue Samuel Fahlberg: the street from
Isola past the post office and up to the
hospital, where cars park along the
sidewalk (no trucks allowed except
for deliveries).
Blue zone parking will be in effect
during the day, from 8am to 6pm,
from Monday through Saturday.
After 6pm, as well as Sundays and
holidays, unlimited parking is free.

Landscape architect and botanist Ulf
Nordfjell has stepped beyond the
boundaries of his native Sweden,
bringing his refreshing sense of out-
door design with him. His combina-
tions of modem and traditional, glass
and stone, neutrals and bolder colors,
wood and water, translate into serene
environments for both public spaces
and private gardens. In 2009 he
designed the Daily Telegraph
Garden for the prestigious
Chelsea Flower Show held in
London last May, and won
Best of Show, an indication
that his clean lines and strong
sense of ecology touch a uni-
versal chord.
"I have been interested in
plants since I was a young
boy," says Nordfjell, who at
the age of three was planting
his earliest garden in his sand-
box. He later studied garden- -
ing trends and techniques
from the Italian Renaissance
to Lawrence Johnston's influ-
ential Hidcote Garden near
Cambridge in England. "We "
do not have the burden of his- .
torical gardens in Sweden," ~,
says Nordfjell, although he ./.:
cites The Linnaeus Garden, ,
which dates from 1655 as an
inspiration, along with Japan- "
ese-American sculptor Isamu It[-.
Noguchi's clean design style. )
"Gardening for me is to do something
structural, but you can add your own
personality to it," explains Nordfjell,
who uses Swedish materials, from
wood, steel, and old millstones in his
designs for garden furniture and deco-
ration. A gazebo, inspired by the
Renaissance, is morphed into some-
thing extremely modem in galvanized
stainless steel, timber, and glass.
"Functional but simple, not to com-
plete with the plants," he adds.
When working on something major
like The Daily Telegraph Garden,
Nordfjell employs up to 150 people.
"You have to be ready for the judg-
ing," he says. "It took a year to com-
plete the project, then it is judged so
quickly, it's like being on a runway for
the haute couture of gardening." Not
sure that his Swedish sensibilities
would so rapidly be accepted by
British horticulturalists, Nordfjell is
aware of the differences in Swedish
gardens to those in England, but his
winning combinations of plants and
ornamentation can be adapted to the
more humid climate in the UK, by
mixing plants for wet and dry areas.
Nordfjell's visit to the Swedish Design
Center in St Barth (www.swedishde-
signcentre.com) coincides with the
world premiere of his new collection
of attractive galvanized steel planters,
which are lined to protect the plants
from excessive cold or heat, and have
self-drainage systems as well as
wheels to make them easy to
move. Nordfjell's company
Lunab (www.nordfjellcollec-
tion.se) produces the planters,
along with trellises, benches,
and pergolas. In addition, a
book about his work, entitled
"14 Gardens" is about to be
published in English by Fran-
cis Lincoln. Advance orders
can be placed at the Swedish
Design Center (Les Amandiers
in St Jean). Nordfjell will sign
them and send copies back to
Saint Barth once the book is
available.
A master planner when it
comes to gardens and outdoor
spaces, Nordfjell won praise
from Stephen Lacey, garden
journalist for The Daily Tele-
graph: "Ulf's interest in com-
bining architecture and
design, with horticulture and
nature is well known and he
has developed his own style,
based on the local genus for
every project. His passion for
designing with plants can be seen in
all of his projects." Nordfjell's gar-
dens are also designed to delight the
eye all year long, making him truly a
man for all seasons, modern yet
rooted in tradition.

2 2S S t tB B a a r r t t h h W W e e e e k k l l y y n n ¡ ¡ 1 1 8 8 7 7 As news from Haiti continues to worsen (see below), rescue and relief efforts have begun around the world to help victims of the strong earthquake that hit the region of Port au Prince on Tuesday, January 12 at 5:53pm, Saint Barth time. When the banks opened here on Wednesday, Jean-Pierre Ballagny opened two accounts at the BNPfor those who would like to make donationsÃone in euros and one in dollarsÑin the name of "Lions Club Ha•ti Disaster Fund." Some of the funds collected will be transferred via Sister Jeanne Maurice, the contact in Haiti for the Lions Club in Saint Barth, which has previously sent aid to this extremely poor country often hit by disaster. On Tuesday evening, Adolphe Brin from the Lions Club, was able to speak to the nun whose neighborhood endured some damage but there were no injuries to her or those around here. She did however see the collapse of a mountainside with hundreds of houses, and the only successful telephone communication with someone in Port au Prince described a city in chaos. The remaining money raised will go to NGOs who are on their way to the scene of the disaster. In the same race against the clock, the Rotary Club also took action. On Wednesday, this service club ordered three Shelter Boxes, a solution the Haitian population will certainly need. Invented by Rotarian Tom Henderson, a former Royal Navy search and rescue diver, these survival boxes cost 750 euros each ($1000) and contain a check for 10 people, rugs, blankets, a gas or kerosene stove, kitchen utensils, Jerrycans, a water purification system, and tools: saw, axe, shovel, ropes, and mosquito netting, and activity packet for kids. The Rotary should also quickly launch a collection drive to help finance a maximum number of Shelterboxes. By mid-morning on Wednesday, Saint Barth president Bruno Magras issued a press release inviting the population to "respond favorably to the requests of the various associations and service clubs," and announcing that the territorial council would deliberate quickly in favor of financial participation by the Collectivity to contribute to "the rescue effort and humanitarian aid." The Multi-Professional Economic Council and the Red Cross have also mobilized and met to discuss a combined effort by these two groups. Haïti Fears Inconceivable Numbers of DeadThe numbers of bodies and injured persons continue to multiple in the streets of Port-au-Prince on Wednesday as Haiti awaited the horrific results of the disaster, which could comprise more than 100,000 dead according to the Haitian prime minister. President RenÂŽ PrÂŽval, who granted his first interview after the earthquake on Wednesday morning, spoke of thousands of dead in the Miami Herald. "The parliament has collapsedÉ hospitals have collapsed. There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them," said PrÂŽval, who thanked the international community for rushing to Haiti's aid in its hour of need. "Alot of people are buried under buildings," added his wife, Elisabeth PrÂŽval, in the same article. Traumatized by the magnitude 7 seismic shock, many of Haitians spent the night outdoors, waiting for sunrise to begin to catalogue the dead and the damage. On Wednesday, there was no electricity and all means of communication were interrupted.Earthquake In Haiti: Rescue Efforts Underway

There is nothing more adorable, and heart-warming, then seeing young musicians performing in concert. This Sunday, January 17, as part of the 26th annual St Barth Music Festival, the island's non-profit association, Saint Barth Harmony, will present a free concert at 4pm at the Anglican Church in Gustavia. Sponsored by island resident, Nancy Latta, this is a wonderful opportunity to bring children to a concert as well as offer encouragement those who are playing. "There will be five young violinists and 10 guitarists," confirms Sophie Laplace, president of Saint Barth Harmony. The association currently has three music teachers: Rudi Laplace for violin, StŽphane Caro for guitar, and Karina, a recent addition for accordion. "The two young accordionists are not in the concert," notes Laplace, but hopefully by next year they will be ready to perform. The violinists will play traditional music for beginners, while the guitarists have a contemporary repertoire adapted to their musical tastes. The young violins learn via the popular Suzuki method, and Rudi Laplace is a great example of a student who excelled and is now a music teacher. "Music is an important part of Saint Barth," says Laplace. "The goal of Saint Barth Harmony is to promote music to the children on the island though classes and music appreciation. We are going to organize some afternoons where kids can touch musical instruments for the first time and get a taste of music in the hope they develop an interest in it. When a child wants to play, and makes that a priority, then it is such a joy, a true passion and not just an obligation." An evening of Mozart with fabulous musicians, great singers, and an internationally acclaimed opera conductorÉall at the Catholic Church in Gustavia! This was the framework for the opening night concert of the 26th annual St Barth Music Festival. An estimated 400 people attended the concert, perhaps the largest audience the festival has attracted in recent years. Was this due to the quality of the music and the performers? Perhaps. But the fact that the first concert was free (rather than the usual ticket prices of $35 to $45) seems to have helped draw this standing-room-only crowd. It was a big risk on the part of the festival director and organizing committee: what if the concert had been free and the audience was still sparse? But happily that was not the case and every pew was filled for a concert that provided a preview of the music to come. "We included some of our best musicians and singers to give you a taste of the concerts on the program this year," said festival director Frances Debroff. Under the baton of Steven Mercurio, the concert was a huge success. Highlights included Richard O'Neill's outstanding performance in a Teleman Viola Concerto, Brian Lewis and Roger Myers in a Mozart violin/viola duo, and this year's quartet of singers warming up their pipes for the annual opera evening. Soprano Laura Pedersen, mezzo-soprano Sarah Maria Punga, tenor Scott Piper, and baritone Gino Quilico brought the house down with the finale: Rossini's Comic Duo for Two Cats (and a well-timed comic woof by the conductor). The audience, regulars and newcomers alike, were treated to a free concert of world-class stature. Let's hope the pews continue to be filled as over 40 musicians and singers perform through January 20. Even at $45, the tickets prices seem reasonable for the sheer star power of the talent on stage. 6 6S S t tB B a a r r t t h h W W e e e e k k l l y y n n ¡ ¡ 1 1 8 8 7 7Demolition has begun on Saint Barth's former town, a historic building built on a foundation of lava stone, with an upper story of wood that has been eaten away by termites. Work began almost two weeks ago and should continue for another two weeks. As of now, the roof has been removed, as well as old wooden walls and concrete pillars. The lower level of stone will not be disturbed for now: that depends on a decision made by the territorial council who will deliberate on the need to push the new building back a few meters in order to improve the flow of traffic. T his would mean moving the foundation of the building as opposed to rebuilding on the exact spot the Swedes laid those stones in the late 18th century. In the latter case, the stone foundation would be preserved. The architectural firm, Lotus, is in charge of the project and was given a simple brief: maintain the style of the building, which has been on the list of historic monuments since 1995. It was once the home of Swedish governors before serving as town hall once the island was returned to the French. In a telephone interview last Monday, Sophie Olivaud, director of the island's technical services office, confirmed that the goal is to start the rebuilding during 2010 after the architectural plans have been approved and construction companies respond to the RFP. When completed, the new building is intended to house a courtroom as well as space for training programs run by the Multiprofessional Economic Council. According to the results of the last census taken on the island in 2007 and published on Thursday, December 31, 2009 in the Official French Journal, the legal population of Saint Barth included 8,595 residents as of January 1, 2008. In contrast, the last census was taken in 1999 and comprised 6,852 people, indicating that the population grew by 25.43%. In January 2008, the INSEE (National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies) estimated the population of Saint Barth at 8,450 residents, by that number was not legally validated. Also at the end of December, the INSEE announced that the legal population in France had grown 61,795,550 residents, a figure which does not include 1,805,452 residents in overseas departments. In keeping with the regulations for overseas collectivities, the next census in Saint Barth should take place in 2012. On a voyage around the world, acrobats Franck and Delphine pulled into the harbor late last week to present two unusual performances in Saint Barth. This duo of "navig'artists" were inspired by the circus, dance, poetry, and theatre in the creation of these two silent productions initially created for the Association of the Vieux Port in Montreal where the couple performed over 150 shows, using mast, boom, cables, and other parts of their sailboat as a stage to exhibit their acrobatic prowess. Their first show, "The Navigators," inspired by Buster Keaton and silent films, is a parody of navigational maneuvers that pokes fun at the mishaps of maladroit navigators. The second show, "Between Island and Wing," deals with malefemale relationships in a spectacle of aerial choreography and acrobatics in a duet that ranges from love, humor and poetry to earth, sea, and sky. These unusual performances presented from port to port represent the personal adventure of this coupleÑ and their two young daughtersÑwho lifted their anchors in July 2004. Their adventure has taken the shape of a tour around the world "to meet new people, rather than wait for them to come to us!" explained Franck, in an interview in front of the Wall House where La Loupiote is anchored. In terms of meeting people, that takes care of itself rather rapidly once the shows are underway: "We like to make sure our performances are accessible to the widest public possible," says Delphine. Since they set sail in 2004, Franck, Delphine, and their girls, eight year-old Loeva and Anja, who is not yet two, have navigated from Brittany to Morocco by way of the Canary Islands and Portugal, before going back to Brittany, having tried out their first shows during this first year of travel. From there, they crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean, then up to QuŽbec and up the Saint Lawrence River, performing all along the way. They did their shows in Montreal, then Boston, Newport, and Bermuda: "We met an American in Newport who thought the people here should definitely see our show, and convinced us to come here. We hope a lot of people come to see us," adds Franck. After their stay in Saint Barth, La Loupiote will head to Antigua, then Grenada and Trinidad before continuing around the world via the Panama Canal and a plunge into the Pacific Ocean. For this young couple, the adventure continues! 8 8S S t tB B a a r r t t h h W W e e e e k k l l y y n n ¡ ¡ 1 1 8 8 7 7 SCHEDULEEach performance lasts 20 minutes and free to the public. The idea is simple: drivers are authorized to park for free for an hour and a half when using a blue parking disk: 2,000 copies of the disks were printed and are available at the Hotel de la CollectivitÂŽ, the Tourist Office, and the Capitainerie (port office) . The disk must be put in clear view on the dashboard, against the windshield of the car, indicating the starting time for the 90 minutes of legal parking. All cars must be moved after 90 minutes. The "blue zones" are defined by new signage and centralized in Gustavia as follows: Rue du Bord du Mer: along the waterfront; Rue de la Republique: the road from the pharmacy to Le Select; Rue de la France: from Le Select to the quay; Rue Place d'Armes: the left side of the street from the waterfront to Beranger; Rue Samuel Fahlberg: the street from Isola past the post office and up to the hospital, where cars park along the sidewalk (no trucks allowed except for deliveries). Blue zone parking will be in effect during the day, from 8am to 6pm, from Monday through Saturday. After 6pm, as well as Sundays and holidays, unlimited parking is free. Blue Zone Parking In Effect Since December 15

1 1 2 2S S t tB B a a r r t t h h W W e e e e k k l l y y n n ¡ ¡ 1 1 8 8 7 7Landscape architect and botanist Ulf Nordfjell has stepped beyond the boundaries of his native Sweden, bringing his refreshing sense of outdoor design with him. His combinations of modern and traditional, glass and stone, neutrals and bolder colors, wood and water, translate into serene environments for both public spaces and private gardens. In 2009 he designed the Daily Telegraph Garden for the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show held in London last May, and won Best of Show, an indication that his clean lines and strong sense of ecology touch a universal chord. "I have been interested in plants since I was a young boy," says Nordfjell, who at the age of three was planting his earliest garden in his sandbox. He later studied gardening trends and techniques from the Italian Renaissance to Lawrence Johnston's influential Hidcote Garden near Cambridge in England. "We do not have the burden of historical gardens in Sweden," says Nordfjell, although he cites The Linnaeus Garden, which dates from 1655 as an inspiration, along with Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi's clean design style. "Gardening for me is to do something structural, but you can add your own personality to it," explains Nordfjell, who uses Swedish materials, from wood, steel, and old millstones in his designs for garden furniture and decoration. Agazebo, inspired by the Renaissance, is morphed into something extremely modern in galvanized stainless steel, timber, and glass. "Functional but simple, not to complete with the plants," he adds. When working on something major like The Daily Telegraph Garden, Nordfjell employs up to 150 people. "You have to be ready for the judging," he says. "It took a year to complete the project, then it is judged so quickly, it's like being on a runway for the haute couture of gardening." Not sure that his Swedish sensibilities would so rapidly be accepted by British horticulturalists, Nordfjell is aware of the differences in Swedish gardens to those in England, but his winning combinations of plants and ornamentation can be adapted to the more humid climate in the UK, by mixing plants for wet and dry areas. Nordfjell's visit to the Swedish Design Center in St Barth (www.swedishdesigncentre.com) coincides with the world premiere of his new collection of attractive galvanized steel planters, which are lined to protect the plants from excessive cold or heat, and have self-drainage systems as well as wheels to make them easy to move. Nordfjell's company Lunab (www.nordfjellcollection.se) produces the planters, along with trellises, benches, and pergolas. In addition, a book about his work, entitled "14 Gardens" is about to be published in English by Francis Lincoln. Advance orders can be placed at the Swedish Design Center (Les Amandiers in St Jean). Nordfjell will sign them and send copies back to Saint Barth once the book is available. Amaster planner when it comes to gardens and outdoor spaces, Nordfjell won praise from Stephen Lacey, garden journalist for The Daily Telegraph: "Ulf's interest in combining architecture and design, with horticulture and nature is well known and he has developed his own style, based on the local genus for every project. His passion for designing with plants can be seen in all of his projects." Nordfjell's gardens are also designed to delight the eye all year long, making him truly a man for all seasons, modern yet rooted in tradition.
