Dear Mr. Newton:

We have enclosed a print of the St. Augustine building which you said
you would like to have in your letter of January 20. This is a copy
from page 94 of A History of Public Buildings published in 1901. A
copy from the original negative would have superior qualities for
reproduction in a history of the building, and we have asked National
Archives to search for the original negative and other pictures of
the building which may have been preserved in the records of the
Treasury Department.

In the meantime we will review documents in the National Archives.
relating to the building with particular attention, as you suggested,
to the remodeling of the 1830s and 1880s. These are being assembled
for our study, and we will send you a further report in two weeks
along with any pictures we may find. Whether the report will be
final will depend on the definitive character of the available rec-
ords and whether they point to further paths of profitable research.

The enclosed copy of an excerpt from the files of the National Park
Service contains interesting historical data. The Service sent us
the extract when we made a preliminary sounding of the availability
of historical material on the building. We also received a sugges-
tion that Bertrum C. Roberts, Superintendent of the Castillo De San
Marcos National Monument at St. Augustine, may have additional infor-
mation, and you may wish to get i;a-touch with him on the matter.
