Subject: Rumors on post office building

Just as you called this AM Major Parker came in and sat down
before me and was muttering all the time you were talking with me,
that is why I said that I rould barely hear you. At any rate the
reason he was in was to tell you the rumors going around about the
post office building. This is it -

The post office dept. is giving up the post office to the
Restoration Commission. We will move upstairs for our headquarters
offices and down stairs we will have our exhibitions of artifacts
and other items. The public is in favor of this especially since
the post office will then occupy the Chamber of Commerce building
where there is ample parking space for the public as well as the
vehicles owned by the P. 0. which now have to be stored overnight
at a cost to the Aovernment. I asked where rumor had it the C of
C would go and he said to the Cordova building where there was
parking space in the Webb parking lot.

Major Parker said all we had to do to get this accomplished
was to have Mr. Wolfe call George Smathers and Smathers would have
the Post Office released to the Commission.

How about that? Well, at least from what Major Parker says,
the rumor is at least favorable.

I called Mr. Wolfe's office and Mrs. Erwin did not know of any
hotel reservations in NY but would check and call me. I passed on
the info that you would be at the Carlton Hotel in case Mr. Wolfe
should need to reach you between now and tomorrow morning.

Bring us back some money! Jo told Marion this AM that if you
brought back any more visitors she was closing the door so tonight
I am going to call her and say that you are bringing the Ambassador
of Colombia and a few others.

Regards,

P. S. You probably have the same tight schedule you always do on
your trips but I thought I'd ask if you have time while and if at
the State Department to pick up anything they might have on protocol,
since our "Mrs. Protocol" no longer wishes to do these things. Thanks.
