I. INTRODUCTION
GUIDES is a microcomputer program that enables you to access
the Florida Pest Control Guides stored on floppy disks. The
Control Guides are divided into five sections: Plant Disease
Control, Insect Control, Weed Control (Terrestrial), Aquatic Weed
Control, and Nematode Control. Each control guide contains
specific control recommendations for pests in Florida. For
example, the terrestrial Weed Control Guide gives control
measures for weeds in field crops as well as application and
calibration instructions.
The Control Guides are printed each year by the University
of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).
The Control Guides are also available to IFAS personnel on the
IFAS VAX through the Florida Agricultural Information Retrieval
System (FAIRS). This information has been copied to floppy disks
for easier and faster access. It also gives private and
commercial users access to the computer form of the Control
Guides. Through GUIDES you can inspect and print information.
This manual instructs you in how to use the GUIDES program.
It will first show you how to install the program on your
computer and then lead you through an actual example of finding
information in GUIDES. One convention of this manual needs to be
explained for you to clearly understand the instructions. When
you are directed to enter a command, type whatever is specified
and press the ENTER or RETURN key. Some computers have an enter
key and others have a return key. So use whichever is
applicable.
II. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
To run the GUIDES program, you must have an IBM PC or
compatible with at least one floppy disk drive, 256K of memory,
and DOS version 2.0 or higher. You will also need a printer if
you want to print any of the information.
GUIDES is not yet available for installation on a hard disk.
At present only the master program files can be copied to the
hard disk.
III. GETTING STARTED
The first step in using the GUIDES software is to make
backup copies of all the disks. We strongly recommend you do
this so that if something happens to the original disks you will
have a backup copy. Use the DOS format command to format one
blank disk for each disk contained in the GUIDES package. Then,
if your computer has two floppy disks drives, insert an original
GUIDES disk in drive A and a formatted disk in drive B. At the
A> prompt, enter:
diskcopy a: b:
All of the files on the GUIDES disk will copy to the disk in
drive b. Repeat this procedure for each of the original GUIDES
disks.
If you have a floppy disk drive and a hard disk drive, enter
the following at the A> prompt:
diskcopy
Then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Store the original GUIDES software disks in a safe place in
case something happens to the working copies.
1. Floppy Disk Drives
To use GUIDES on a computer with two floppy disk drives,
first follow your normal procedures for turning on your computer.
Once you see the A> prompt on the screen, remove the DOS diskette
from drive A and insert the GUIDES master diskette. Then enter:
guides
In a few seconds the main Control Guides menu will appear on the
screen (Figure 1).
You could also place the DOS system files on the same disk as
the GUIDES master files. This way you only need to use one disk
to boot your system and access the GUIDES program. In other
words, you would not have to use the DOS diskette to start the
system and then the GUIDES master diskette to access the GUIDES
program. Instead, all the files would be on one disk. Only the
information in the Control Guides would be on different disks.
If you are basically going to use your computer just for GUIDES
or if you anticipate that GUIDES will probably be the first
program you use each morning, this method would save you a little
time.
First, insert a blank disk into drive a. From the A>
prompt, format the blank disk by entering the following command:
format a:/s
Be sure that the only space in this command is after the word
format. Otherwise the command will not work properly. This
command differs from the normal format command in that it copies
the DOS system files to the disk while it is formatting.
Usually, the DOS system files are not copied to the disk being
formatted. Continue to use the normal format command for the
rest of the GUIDES disks.
When the disk is formatted, remove it from drive A and
insert it in drive B. Insert the original GUIDES master disk in
drive A. Then at the A> prompt, enter the following:
copy a:*.* b:
The files on the GUIDES master disk will be copied to the disk in
drive B which also contains the DOS system files.
Once all the files have copied, make a backup of this new
disk in the same way as discussed above. Now you can use this
disk to start your computer and access the GUIDES program as
well. Simply insert the disk in drive A and turn the computer
on. Then, when the A> prompt is on the screen, enter GUIDES.
Soon the GUIDES main menu will appear (Figure 1). Using one
diskette in this way eliminates the need to change disks.
2. Hard Disk Drive
If you have one floppy drive and a hard disk, access the
GUIDES program in the following way. First be sure your computer
is on. At the C> prompt, insert the GUIDES master disk in drive
A. Then switch to the A drive by entering:
C> A:
At the A> prompt enter the following:
GUIDES
In a few seconds the main Control Guides menu will appear on the
screen (Figure 1).
To make this procedure a little faster, you could copy the
GUIDES master files onto the hard disk. First create a
subdirectory called guides. Consult the DOS manual for
instructions on creating a subdirectory. Then insert the GUIDES
master disk into drive a. Be sure that you are in the GUIDES
subdirectory and then enter:
copy a:*.*
This command tells the computer to copy all of the files on the
disk in drive A, which are the master program files, to the
GUIDES subdirectory on drive C. If you are not in the GUIDES
subdirectory and enter this command, the files will be copied to
whatever directory you are in.
Then enter:
guides
from the GUIDES subdirectory prompt. The main menu (Figure 1)
will appear on the screen in a few seconds.

information. At the time these instructions were written only
the terrestrial Weed Control Guide, the Aquatic Weed Control
Guide, and the Insect Control Guide were available on floppy
disks. The Plant Disease Control Guide and the Nematode Control
Guide will be available in the near future.
The following pages will show you examples of the
terrestrial Weed Control Guide to demonstrate how GUIDES works.
IV. SAMPLE RUN
Once you have the main GUIDES menu on the screen (Figure 1),
press 3 for the Weed Control Guide (Terrestrial). You do not
need to press ENTER also. In a few seconds the terrestrial Weed
Control Guide menu will appear on the screen (Figure 2). Notice
that it covers a wide range of subjects.

Choose 6 for control recommendations for weeds in fruit and
nut crops. GUIDES tells you which floppy disk contains that
information:
INSERT Weed Control Guide DISK NUMBER 1 IN DRIVE A.
Remove the GUIDES Master diskette from drive A and insert disk
number one. You do not need to press ENTER or RETURN.
The program also displays the following statement at the
bottom of the page:
THEN PRESS P TO PRINT, I TO INSPECT, ESC TO QUIT:
You do not need to press ENTER after making your selection.
PRINT will print the information at your local printer.
Before pressing P be sure your printer is properly connected to
the computer and turned on. If it is not and you press P the
program will "freeze" and the computer will have to be re-booted.
INSPECT displays the information on the screen. Several
function keys help you move through the screens. PRINT and
INSPECT are explained in detail below.
If you inserted the wrong disk, GUIDES beeps and displays
this message:
SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE DISK.
INSERT Weed Control Guide DISK NUMBER 1 IN DRIVE A.
Insert the correct disk in drive A and press P or I again.
1. PRINT
The print function enables you to copy to paper sections of
the Control Guide. The instructions are on the screen. Before
pressing P be sure the printer is on and properly connected to
the computer. If the printer is not on or connected, the program
"freezes" and you will have to re-boot the computer by
simultaneously pressing the CTRL, ALT, and DEL keys. First
remove the Control Guides disk from drive A. If you are using
two floppy drives, insert DOS into drive A. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL.
If you have a hard disk drive, remove the Control Guides disk and
press CTRL-ALT-DEL. Then follow the instructions in "Getting
Started" to return to the correct Control Guide.
As an example, let's print information on Fruit and Nut
Crops from the terrestrial Weed Control Guide. First, boot your
system with DOS and access the Control Guides menu as directed at
the beginning of this chapter. Then press 3 for Weed Control
Guide (Terrestrial) and 6 for Fruit and Nut crops. When GUIDES
asks you to press P or I, press P and the entire Fruit and Nut
Crops section will be printed. You do not need to press ENTER or
RETURN, also. The following instructions appear on the screen:
READY TO PRINT: Weed Control Guide
Fruit and Nut Crops
INSERT PAPER IN PRINTER AT TOP OF PAGE
PRESS ENTER TO BEGIN PRINTING
PRESS ESC TO EXIT WITHOUT PRINTING
Be sure the paper is positioned properly in the printer and
press ENTER. The following information will appear on the
screen:
PRINTING REPORT
PRESS ESC TO STOP PRINTING.
PAGE 1 BEING FORMATTED.
The number at the bottom of the page will be incremented by
one for each page in the section. When the section is completely
printed, GUIDES returns you to the terrestrial Weed Control Guide
menu to choose another section if you wish. If you change your
mind and do not want to print the information, simply press ESC
to return to the terrestrial Weed Control Guide menu.
2. INSPECT
The inspect command lets you read on the screen the
information you choose. Each section in the terrestrial Weed
Control Guide, and every other control guide, is further divided
into smaller subsections containing more specific information.
For example, within the Weed Control Guide is the topic weed
control in fruit and nut crops. Citrus and pecans are sections
of this topic. Within citrus are the subsections pre-emergence
and post-emergence herbicides.
After pressing I, the title page of the first subsection in
the section you chose is displayed, including the update date,
author, and title of the section. The following keys are
available to help you move through the sections and subsections:
PgDn: moves forward through a section one screen at a time
PgUp: moves backward through a section one screen at a time
Down Arrow: moves forward through a screen one line at a
time
Up Arrow: moves backward through a screen one line at a
time
Fl: displays an index of the contents of the section
Shift PgDn: accesses the next subsection
Shift PgUp: accesses the previous subsection
HOME: returns to the first subsection within the current
section
ESC: exits a section and eventually the program
These function keys are displayed at the bottom of every
screen.
Again, let's use an example from the terrestrial Weed
Control Guide to show how these keys work. From the main Control
Guides menu, press 3 for the Weed Control Guide (Terrestrial) and
then 6 from the terrestrial Weed Control Guide menu for Fruit and
Nut Crops. Insert the correct floppy disk and press I for
INSPECT. You do not need to press ENTER or RETURN as well.
The title page for the first subsection in the first section
is displayed. For Fruit and Nut Crops, it reads as follows:

Again, use the Down Arrow to move through the text. After
reading a few paragraphs, suppose you realize this is not the
information you need either. Instead of pressing SHIFT-PgDn
until you find the right subsection, press Fl. An index of the
subsections in the Fruit and Nut Crops section is displayed:

USE PgDn,PgUp TO PICK A SECTION. THEN PRESS ENTER.
PRESS ESC TO QUIT.
As instructed at the bottom of the screen, use the Down
Arrow, Up Arrow, PgDn, or PgUp keys to move through the index to
find the correct information. Usually the entire index cannot be
displayed on one screen. Continue pressing the PgDn or Down
Arrow keys to see all of the index. The arrow on the screen
moves up and down and highlights the title of each subsection it
stops on. When the arrow is pointing to the subsection you want
to read, press ENTER or RETURN. The first page of that
subsection will be displayed.
When you are finished reading a section, press Fl again to
find another subsection of information to read. You could
instead continue pressing ESC until you return to the terrestrial
Weed Control Guide menu.
V. EXITING GUIDES
To exit from the GUIDES program, continue pressing ESC until
you reach the main GUIDES menu (Figure 1). Press ESC again and
if you have a hard disk system, you will be returned to the A>
prompt. If you are using floppy drives, you may get a message
asking for the command.com file. Remove the GUIDES disk from
drive A. Insert the DOS system disk and press any key.
