IBM-PC and Compatibles User's Instructions
You will need an IBM-PC (or compatible) computer with at least 64K bytes of random access memory.
GETTING STARTED
*Insert your MS-DOS (PC-DOS) disk into Drive A and turn on the computer. (This will automatically "cold boot"
the disk operating system.) If the computer is already on, insert the DOS disk into Drive A and press 3 keys
(CTRL, ALT, and DELETE) at the same time. (This is a "warm boot.")
*Remove the DOS disk and insert Soots and Stains program disk into Drive A.
*At the A prompt (A> ), type STAIN and press return.
*The Soot and Stain Removal title and author information will appear on your screen and the program is ready
to use.
USING THE PROGRAM
This is a menu-driven, user-friendly program with easy-to-follow screen prompts.
*To move to the next screen "Press any key" (the space bar is a good key to press).
*To select a menu option, type the number or letter of your choice.
The Main Menu offers 3 options: (1) General Information, (2) Stain Removal, and (3) Quit.
The General Information sub-menu contains information on:
(a) How to Identify Stains, (b) Identifiable Stains,(c) Invisible Stains, (d) Rings, (e) Unknown Stains,
(f) Nonwashable Garments, and (g) Terms.
The Stain Removal sub-menu contains information on:
(a) General Procedures, (b) Alcoholic Beverages, (c) Ball Point Ink (Non-Permanent), (d) Blood, (e) Candle Wax,
(f) Catsup,(g) Chewing Gum, (h) Chocolate, (I) Coffee and Tea, (j) Cosmetics, (k) Crayon, (I) Cream, Ice Cream,
and Milk, (m) Fruits and Berries, (n) Grass, (o) Gravy, (p) Grease and Oil, (q) Lipstick, (r) Mayonnaise and Salad

the screen and pressing any key will take you to the second screen of information.
To Print the Information Screens:
*Be sure your printer Is ready and press P when the Information unit you want to print is on your screen. The
page (or pages) will print and the computer will return you to the Main Menu.
NOTE: The program provides a space between "screens" of information when printing but it doesn't provide a
"form-feed" (it doesn't automatically go the to top of the next page), so you have the option of printing each
screen one after another or "form-feeding" at the printer between each file of information.
To Exit the Program:
At the Main Menu, choose option 3. Remove and store your program disk. You can then turn off the
computer or re-boot DOS for other programs.
NOTICE
Access to the "Spot and Stain Removal" information with a DEC PROfessional 300 computer series requires the
utilization of the "iBase Data Manager" program. This is a generic information management program that can
also be used with other information bases. It is a menu driven application that provides on-line help and
instructions for selecting the desired information, displaying it on the screen, and for optionally obtaining a hard
copy on an attached printer. Instructions for installing the iBase Manager application are included in this
manual.
Because of the use of the iBase Manager Program, this form of the "Spot and Stain Removal" data base could be
modified by the user to meet their specific needs. Instructions on how to modify an information base can be
found in the document, "iBase Programmer's Guide." If, however, any changes are made to these Spot and Stain
Removal information base flies for any reason, be aware:
ANY MODIFICATION TO THE ORIGINAL INFORMATION BASE DISTRIBUTED WITH THIS APPLICATION
SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE PERSON MODIFYING ANY PART OF THE
INFORMATION BASE ASSUMES FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CONTENTS OF THE ENTIRE INFORMATION
BASE, NOT JUST THE PART MODIFIED. MODIFIED INFORMATION BASES CANNOT BE SUPPORTED BY THE
ORIGINAL AUTHOR.
