Abstract

ASFOR is a bibliographic online advisor in urban forestry. It was
developed by Stephanie C. Chase and Dr. Edward F. Gilman using the
1st Class expert system shell. The advisor contains references to the
urban forestry literature which will be useful to practicing urban
foresters as well as to persons with a general interest in the field.
The program consists of one ASFOR advisor diskette and an
accompanying user's guide.

Introduction

ASFOR (Asphalt Forest) is an online advisor on urban forestry. It
is a bibliographic data base designed to help users locate information
on various aspects of urban forestry including administration, values,
environmental factors, tree selection, etc. It also provides listing of
tree species suitable for the various hardiness zones found in the
United States. In the file Urban Forester's Bookshelf are listings
of key books, manuals, and professional organizations of interest to
urban foresters.

The advisor was prepared using lstCLASS, an expert system shell
software, developed by Programs In Motion. The RUN-TIME
(ADVISOR) file included in this program is copyrighted (c) William
Hapgood 1987.

Hardware and Software Requirements

HARDWARE:
To run the basic system, you need an IBM PC or compatible with 256
kilobytes of memory.

SOFTWARE: DOS version 2.0 or higher and an ASFOR advisor
diskette.

Operating Procedures

It is advisable that you make a backup copy of the ASFOR advisor
diskette before you proceed with these instructions. Use a double-
sided, double density disk for your backup.

To make the backup disk:

Insert your DOS disk (2.0 or higher) into Drive A.

Boot the disk by turning on the computer.

At the A>, remove the DOS disk from Drive A and insert the
ASFOR diskette. Insert a formatted blank disk into Drive B, which
has been formatted with the /S (system) option. Then type: copy *.*
b: The computer will copy the files onto the disk in Drive B.

After copying is completed, check to see that you have 9 files
on the new disk. To check the files, you must switch default drives.

At A> type: B:
At B> type: dir

This will list the files on the disk in drive B. the files should include:
Advisor. Exe, Asfor.KBM, Plan.KBM, Treesel.KBM, Environ.KBM,
Values.KBM, Admin.KBM, Hardyl.KBM, and Maint.KBM.

All following instructions referring to the ASFOR diskette or disk
imply use of the backup.

Preparing and Running Advisor Asfor

For Two-Floppy Systems

Installing the DOS command.com file on the ASFOR diskette.

In order to run the ASFOR advisor with your particular DOS operating
system, you must add the command.com file to your ASFOR disk.

Insert the DOS disk into drive A and the working copy of the
ASFOR disk into drive B.

At the A>, type: copy command.com b: This will
transfer the file to your ASFOR disk. This disk can now be used
in a two-floppy system without loading DOS first.

Running Asfor Advisor

1. Insert the ASFOR advisor disk with the command.com file
into Drive A.

2. Boot the system

3. At the A>, type: Advisor Asfor

4. The program will ask you if your computer is an IBM or
IBM compatible. Type: y

Note: If you have not transferred the command. com file onto the
Asfor disk, you will need to boot the system with DOS in Drive A and
the ASFOR disk in Drive B.

At the A>, type: b: This will switch drives.

At the B>, type : Advisor Asfor This will begin the
program from step 4 above.

Follow the screen instructions. Use the up and down arrow
keys and the page up and page down keys to position the cursor next
to your selection at each menu, then press the key.

For Hard Drive Systems

Loading the Program into the Hard Drive

Turn system on. After the system has booted, insert the
ASFOR disk into Drive A.

Move to the root directory and make an ASFOR
subdirectory:
CD\
MD Asfor

Copy files from the ASFOR disk into the subdirectory:

copy A: *.* C: \ Asfor

Installation is complete; these files are now loaded into the hard
drive. Your system is ready to run.

Running the Program

Boot the system and change to the ASFOR subdirectory.

CD\ Asfor

Start ADVISOR ASFOR

Advisor Asfor

Follow the screen instructions. Use the up and down arrow
keys, and the page up and page down keys to position the cursor
next to your selection at each menu, then press the key.

Ending the Program

At the end of each menu section, you have the option of Q (quitting),
R (Replaying the same option), or N (New session).

If you choose Q, you will exit to DOS and the A> (or the C> if you are
using a hard disk system.)
If you choose R, you will be returned to the last full menu and
prompted to reverify your previous choices.
If you choose N, you will be returned to the introductory screen.

Program Screens/Sample Run

Each screen presented enables the user to focus his/her subject
request.

The first menu (shown below) provides an introduction to the field of
urban forestry and a selection of broad categories. Because the text
fills more than one screen, you will receive a PgDn to continue
command at the end of the first screen. A portion of text will be
repeated when you page down. At the end of the second screen, you
are given the instruction to press the return, or enter key, to begin.
