MEMORANDUM

TO: IFAS Software Customers

RE: Running BASIC programs

The program you have just purchased was written in the BASIC programming language.
Originally, we distributed only the BASIC language source file and required that you use a
BASIC interpreter to run the program.

We now distribute BASIC programs in compiled form. This means that you do not have
to load BASIC prior to running the program. Until the documentation is updated to reflect
this change, please refer to the following instructions to start program 020, titled "Pesticidal
Spray Calculations".

First, make a duplicate copy of the distribution disk. Store the distribution disk in a safe
place and use the duplicate copy as your working disk. To run the program simply type:

SPRAY

at the DOS prompt and press the Enter (or Return) key.

Once you have started the program, the instructions in the documentation should apply. In
some cases, the documentation or program may allow you the option of exiting to BASIC
or DOS. With a compiled program, regardless of which you choose, you will exit to
DOS.

If you need more space on your working disk, you can delete any files with the extension
".BAS". These are BASIC source files and you do not need them to run the program.

If you have any questions about this program, please contact the IFAS Software Support
office, Bldg 120 Room 203, Gainesville, FL 32611 or phone (904) 392-7853.

A MICROCOMPUTER PROGRAM FOR PERFORMING
PESTICIDAL SPRAY CALCULATIONS

by

C. D. Stanley and J. F. Price

Correct mixing of pesticidal sprays requires calculations based
on spray volume requirements, equipment delivery rates, pesticidal
formulations and pesticide label requirements which may be stated in
amount of total product or active ingredient per acre or in amount of
formulated product per volume of preparation. These calculations can
be time-consuming and complicated. The authors have developed a
microcomputer program for performing most of the routine calculations
required for proper mixing of pesticidal sprays for application on
annual agronomic row crops and horticultural crops grown in the
field, greenhouse and shadehouse. Based on responses to simple
questions, the program calculates delivery rates of spray equipment,
the area that will be treated by the amount of spray to be prepared
and amounts of formulated pesticidal product required for proper
preparation of the spray mixture.

This computer program was developed to perform the routine
calculations involved with the preparation of pesticidal sprays, thus
resulting in more efficient use of time and materials needed for this
management operation. Specific objectives of the program are 1) to be
applicable to all common pesticidal spray formulations and label-
direction combinations (including new metric form labels), 2) to be
easy to use and 3) to provide the desired information in an easily
understandable form.

This program is written in MBASIC-86 programming language and
was developed on a Digital Equipment Corporation Rainbow 100
microcomputer with 128K RAM (random access memory) using the CP/M-
86/80 operating system. The program requires that 20K RAM be
available for loading and execution and can be adapted with changes
in a few program statements to operate on most microcomputers using
popular versions of BASIC programming language.

The program begins with the option for the user to view or
bypass a series of information screens explaining the decision-making
process of the program and the information required of the user. The
only inputs required for execution of this program are sprayer output
rate and the label directions for mixing. A simple sprayer output
test is included on one of the information screens to aid the user in
determining sprayer output (in gallons) before calculations are made.

Once these information screens have been displayed or bypassed, the
user is asked if the delivery rate (gallons/acre) is known for the
spray equipment to be used. If this information is known, it is
requested. If the information is not known, the program requests the
results from the simple test to determine sprayer delivery rate
described earlier in the information screens, and then calculates the
sprayer delivery rate.

The name and formulation of the pesticide to be used is
requested; then the user is asked if the preparation instructions
from the pesticide label call for a specified amount of formulated
product per 100 gallons of preparation. An affirmative response
prompts a request for the units of measurement required by the
product label (liquid ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, dry ounces or
pounds), the number of those units required and the number of gallons
of spray to be prepared. Upon receiving this information, the program
displays a table of mixing information for the indicated product. The
table contains the pesticide name and formulation, sprayer delivery
rate, label directions, the amount of spray to be prepared, the area
that can be treated by that amount of spray and the amount of
formulated product to be added to the tank.

If the label is not stated in terms of total product per 100
gallons, the user is asked if the label requires a specified amount
of active ingredient (AI) or a specified amount of total product (TP)
to be applied per acre. If application is to be based on total
product per acre, the user is asked the units of measurement (liquid
ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, dry ounces or pounds), the number of
those units required per acre and how many gallons of spray are to be
prepared. Based on responses to these questions, a table of mixing
information similar to that described earlier is displayed.

If label directions of the pesticide are stated in terms of the
amount of active ingredient (AI) to be applied per acre, the user is
asked if the pesticide is in a dry form (such as soluble powders or
wettable powders). If the response is affirmative, then the user is
asked to enter the amount of spray to be prepared, the pounds of
active ingredient required per acre, and the % of formulated product
that is active ingredient. If the formulation is liquid, the user is
asked to enter the amount of spray to be prepared, the pounds of
active ingredient required per acre and the active ingredient
concentration (pounds per gallon or grams per liter of formulated
product that is active ingredient). After this information has been
provided, a mixing information table is displayed containing the
concentration of the active ingredient in the formulated product (%
active ingredient for dry formulations and pounds of active
ingredient per gallon of formulated product for liquid formulations)
in addition to pertinent information provided in the mixing
information tables described earlier.

Once a mixing information table is displayed, regardless of the
formulation or label directions, the user is asked if he desires

printed output of the mixing information table on the screen. After
the response to this question is entered, the user is asked if he
desires to change the amount of spray to be prepared. This option
allows the user to adjust the amount of the preparation based on the
coverage area information provided in the mixing information table.
If the volume of preparation is to be changed, then the new spray
volume (gallons) is requested and the mixing information is
recomputed and immediately displayed in a new table. The user is
again given the options to obtain printed output and/or change the
amount of spray to be prepared. If no change is desired, the option
to compute mixing information for another pesticide is given. A
negative response terminates the use of the program and returns the
user to the computer's operating system.

The program is sufficiently versatile that valid computations
can be made for most methods of spray applications used in
greenhouses, shadehouses or in the field. When small amounts (8 dry
ounces or 32 liquid ounces or less) of formulated product are
required in the spray preparation, the program states the
requirements in milliters or grams in addition to the English units
common to larger amounts. When the area to be covered by the amount
of spray prepared is small (less than 1 acre), the area is displayed
in square feet in addition to the fraction of an acre. These features
make the program useful for small greenhouse operations or for
pesticidal research on small plots.

With the added flexibility and accuracy this program provides in
computing pesticidal spray information, it becomes practical for
operators to change sprayer delivery rates to accommodate the
requirements of the particular crop involved while still delivering a
given amount of pesticide to the crop site. This capability will
enhance the cost effectiveness of pesticides and assure compliance
with label instructions.
