Working Your Block.

At the Toronto Student Volunteer Conven-
tion, Mr. L. D. Wisbard told this incident:
"I recently had given me at first hand the
following interesting facts concerning the con-
duct of the Presidenfial campaign of 1888 in
the United States: A prominent business man,
whose name is known throughout the entire
Christian world, was asked to take a leading
part in the campaign. The duty assigned him
was the carrying of the Empire State by the
party with which he was affiliated. He knew
that the storm center of the battle was the
metropolitan city of the continent. He knew
that it would be impossible to reverse the ma-
jority of the opposing party in that city. He
believed, however, that the majority could be so
reduced that it might be overcome by, the tidal
wave which his party would roll down to the
Harlem River. He, therefore, set himself to the
task of reducing the majority in the city. He
believed that it could be done by securing a
fair registration. He accordingly enlisted the
services of about one hundred young men from
the leading jobbing houses, insurance offices
and other commercial centers. He stationed
each of these men in a block, of the city where
there was great danger of false registration
and held each man responsible for knowing
everything that breathed within the four
boundary lines of his block. He frequently .
addressed these men as follows: 'You are not

responsible for the national campaign, nor
the State campaign; neither are you re-
sponsible as individuals for -the city cam-
paign. Appropriate committees have been
made responsible for the national, State and
city campaigns, and you are not members of
those committees; but, gentlemen, the block,
the block!' Those who heard him declare
that he uttered the words 'the block' with such
fire in his eyes and voice that he made every
man of the hundred feel that upon his own
block the national campaign hinged. Those
men went back to their blocks and watched
them day and night like faithful watch-dogs.
They made it utterly impossible for any man to
register falsely from any one of those blocks.
A fair registration resulted; and from that a
fair vote; and from that a reduced majority;
and from that the overwhelming of the ma-
jority by the tidal wave from the State. That
business man won the contest by the block
system."
That was sense and enterprise applied to
politics. Can we not do as well In our work
for the kingdom of our Lord? Let each pastor,
each secretary, each editor, and each head of
any department of the Lord's work remember
his "uiocK" and do his duty thoroughly and
well.

FOREIGN MISSION BOARD,
SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION,
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
Wm. 20 M.-4-07.

THE WAY IT WAS LAST YEAR.

April the 30th in the Foreign Mission Rooms.
It dawns bright and beautiful. The softest
and sweetest of breezes blow from the South.
What messages do they bring from the South-
land? One hundred thousand dollars is the
sum needed to-day. Will it come? Or must
we do what we have not done for years-re-
port a debt at the Convention? Every heart
feels the strain. The mails and telegrams
are opened with eager hands. They mean so
much to-day! The Convention said that we
must advance. The white harvest fields have
called piteously for laborers. The mission-
aries have begged for reinforcements and bet-
ter equipment for the Lord's work. Volun-
teers for the front have pleaded to be allowed
to go in obedience to the Master's call. We
have made some advance, not as great as we
wanted to make, nothing like as great as
ought to be made, but as much as we felt was
wise. Will the- churches sustain us?
Oh! .South Winds, what are you saying?
Yes, we know of the broad land from which
you come, rolling in wealth, abundantly
blessed of God. We remember the happy
Christian homes, filled with every comfort.
Many of them have sheltered and rested us
in our weariness. Thank God for them! No,
we have not forgotten the beautiful temples of
worship and the great institutions of learning.
They are glorious! But do you mean to tell
us that this host of God's people have denied
the relatively small sum of money asked for to
send the Bread of Life to the perishing mil-
lions? Surely, we misunderstand you!
Have all here in the Rooms done their best?
Sometimes both mind and body have been
strained almost to the breaking point. But
was there more that could have been done?
Have we left any word unspoken or prayer
unuttered? Has there been any effort untried?
Well, we have striven to do our best. What
will the result be?

The clock has struck ten p. m., and only
two hours remain. We need sixty-five -thou-
sand dollars! The outlook is darker than the
night about us! Still there are some rays of
hope. What will be the final- report from
Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee,
and Texas? Our hope is in them now; the
others have spoken. Will the messenger boys
never come?
Midnight.has come. The last telegram has
arrived. The South Winds were right. The
brethren have failed, and that, too, at a time
when God has given His largest blessing to,
the. foreign fields. Some of. the States have
done nobly, making a fine increase. Others have
gone backward. While there is an increase of
more than thirty thousand dollars over last
year, there is need of twenty-eight thousand
more! We have hoped and feared, prayed and
labored that there, might be no debt. All of
the brethren have tried to calm our. fears by
assuring us confidently that every dollar
would come Have they been too confident and.-.-
therefore failed to do their best? Go:lI nows
May He use this failure to stir the people to
greater en.iea\or and bring out of it glory to
His Name!
* *
:That delbt meant an interest account on this
year equal to the salary of two missionaries.
It meant disrnmfort to our brotherhood; it
meant distress to the Forei.n Board: interest
has gone iup and money has been hMrd to get
to carry on the work. It meant discourage.
ment to our noble, sel'-sacrificing mission.
aries at the liont.
NOW, HOW ABOUT THIS YEAR?
By each and every one doing his or her
part, we can get VICTORY. The call is to you
L'et it not be in vain! A strong, united pull
anti all will be well on April 30, 1907.

MANUFACTURERS' RECORD
BALTIMORE
RICHARD H. EDMONDS
EDITOR AND GENERAL MANAGER

Baltimore, May 10, 1907.
Dear Sir:-
Beyond question the most comprehensive review
ever published of the industrial and agricultural
advance of the South since 1880, and of the ma-
terial resources on which Southern progress and
prosperity are based, is given in the Manu-
facturers' Record of May 9th, a copy of which we
are mailing you. This elaborate review must for
all time to come be the final authority in facts
and figures about the South. We believe that it
should appeal with greater force than anything
ever before issued or likely to be issued for
years to come to every intelligent man in the
South.
It is a story of the South, past and present,
and a forecast of the future. It deals with the
facts of ante-bellum days and of the last quarter of
a century, and undertakes to indicate the future.
We invite your critical examination of this
great story and of this particular issue of the
Record as a whole. It is a good example of what
the Manufacturers' Record is doing every week. We
do not believe that any thoughtful man in the South
can be otherwise than interested in a close
acquaintanceship with what this section is doing
and what it may accomplish. The facts bearing on
these questions touch the life of every man and
woman in the South. For this reason, and because
we are assured that it will be a wise investment
for you, we want to number you among our sub-

scribers. It will cost you but $4.00 a year, or
8 cents a week, to be kept in thorough touch with
every phase of thought and activity which makes for
the broadest and safest upbuilding of the South.
Thousands'of Southern people find the Manufacturers'
Record invaluable. Can we not number you among the
list? If so, kindly sign the enclosed subscription
card and return to us.
Very truly yours,
MANUFACTURERS' RECORD PUB. CO.

TALLAHASSEE

May 11th, 1907.

Hon. W. S. Jennings,

Jacksonville, Fla.

Dear Sir:-
In looking over the records concerning the

matter you spoke of, in which the sale to porter, McCormick and Hath-

cock is being considered by investigating committee: I find that
there was some letters written to them, no price is named by me in

any letter I can find. I further find that we speak of Mr.

Griggs as their representative and agent and Mr. Myers as Attorney

as well. The matter was considered fully and minutes developed it, in

addition the deeds show that a second instrument was drawn and

signed to allow the trade to cover timber cut, and not removed & C.

I hope you will come in and go over the matter when up here.

I went to see you on subject and you:had left the Governor's office

to go home. I think you ought to be allowed to go before the

committee. Mr. Bell ought to be placed before the committee, as all

parties seem perfectly satisfied and well pleased with the settlement .

you remember, we felt that some of the parties were innocent and would

suffer unjust hardships, was a strong reason to allow an adjustment

of the whole matter.
Mr. Bell had worked up the case fully, or we would not have

gotten anything, as the parties disputed the State's

right to the land and when timber would have been removed, nothing

of value would have remained.

Honorable W. J. Jennings,

My dear Governor :

Your letter of April 30th was received and

followed shortly thereafter by your brief in the Drain-

age case. I delayed replying to your note until I

had had a chance to go through the brief.

To my mind it covers the question of taxation

so thoroughly, that it might well be called a treatise

instead of a brief. Although the direct question

presented are not likely to be hooted in this state,

yet on the subject of taxation in general, I find it

exceedingly interesting and may some day, have occasion

to put it to practical use.

Anticipating the pleasure of renewing our ac-

quaintance, I remain, ,

CABLE ADDRESS, BANK
REFER TO DATE OF TRIS LETTER IN IEPLY
May 21 1907

Hon. W.S.Jennings,

Jacksonville, Fla.

Dear Sir:--

I have waited *6 see Mr. Varn before writing you further about

my personal affairs. I have had a talk with Mr. Varn and he opposes mov-

ing the note from Lane's bank. He promisedor suggested that he would.

write Lane at once to give me time on the note. So far Lane writes me

he has not heard from him, and says if I will pay $2000.00 on the note

he will give me the time on the balance aske d for. Therefore ite looks

as if I must pledge my stock for the presentatleast.

In the mean time I will endeavor to make some disposition of my south

Florida lands. I will say too that the prospect of realizing something

out of my phosphate daal is rather good now. Kindly advise of the probiy

ability of being able to realize on this stock#. If you have any

further suggestions to make regarding these matters they will be ap-

preciated by me. We have been very busy at the bank of late. This is

due to two causes Mr. Budd's absence and an increase in the volume

of checks that are now coming in. I will endeavor today to make out a

statement setting forth such information that you have asked for. WE

are to have a meeting of the board of directors of the bank Thursday

and would be glad if y6u could come down. We will also send weekly re-

ports of bank as reqest'd. I am glad to say that the drouth is at last ,

broken; we have been having some good rains and particularly hard ones

at Brooksville.
Respectfully yours,
