Dear Jim:

As you know, we have from time to time made efforts to find new material
on your house and the Horruytiner family, but we just seem to have run out
of source ..-naterials in St. Augustine. Eleanor Barnes canvassed whatever
there is in the Historical Society rather thoroughly evidently for your original
impressive documentation. In running over the Historical Society source
materials (which is about all that is available here), Dr. Cubenas seems to
have found very little more.

Like all the materials relating to the period before 1764, the sources seem
to be in Spain or lost. I very much hope that we can develop a research iro-
gram in Spain to locate this immensely valuable material; no one has found
it yet. When we do, we may gain all sorts of new information about many of
the old houses in St.Augustine. Yours is certainly one of the most important,
and one of those about which we would like to be well informed.

However, I have kept a continuing eye out and have run into something which
should be of considerable interest to you. When talking with the Director of
the National Archives of Mexico, he mentioned the presence in Carnpechi, on
the Caribbean coast, of a very large colony of St. Augustine families. It
seems that many of the most important families from St. Augustine, after the
exodus of 1764, went to Campechi. Among them were the Horruytiners. I
enclose a copy of the notes which Dr. Mane prepared for me on the family in
Campechi, and we will get it translated and give you an English version as
well. Of course this isn't new material on the house, but it is on what is per-
haps the most important family to have occupied it.
