Memo: To Mr. Newton
From: Eleanor P. Barnes

Aviles Street almost complete. You will receive
in few days. Covers 19 houses and three complete
blocks.

Many interesting items have come out of it.
For example the Artillery corner beoasted-a
Spanish gentleman with his Menendez wife the
Treasurer's daughter. Then passed to a British
Naval officer, Capt. Skinner, so to an English Attorney,
then to an agent for merchants, to a Spanish dealer in
Provisions and to the Minorcan gentleman, Bernardo Segui.
Today the Library stands here.

Block little "d" had the Brotherhood house and a grand-daughter
of THE de Leon, passed to the Episcopal minister and Juan
Lesle of the Banking firm...

Bl. "h" knew the grandson of a former Governor and a Ponce de
Leon in the bargain, also was shared by a Spanidh gentleman,
Don Juan de Salas. Passed eventually to Garcia, the Tavern-
Keeper and Don Juan came back to claim his home.

Bl."SW had the native born Casahonda in full charge.
He owned it all. -Passed to a British Storekeeper then
to Builder Watson, finally by deed of gift to a Minorcan
lad and property was in charge of the sainted Padre Camps.
Corner of Bridge and Aviles knew the grand-daughter of
de Leon, then the Innkeep Henderson...then the British Land
Surveyor General and an Italian Wine-Merchant!
Corner of the Plaza boasted a native boy, descendant of two
prominent families, then a British Planter, followed by *
is Majesty's Councillor, member of the Governor's Staff,
then the former Attorney general...among others...finally
to the well known Florida born Sanchez-Ortigosa!

Fabulous relationships. You'll hardly credit it. Makes
my Avero complex look small.

I suggest that we ce3ar the north end of the town this
way before proceedii ; south. What do yoy think?
I have sent in since, ine 1st, partial t. George,
partial Charlotte, all of Cuna, all Treasury. Suppose
we do from the Gates to Governor's mansion, finish ..--
Charlotte and do Hypolita before passing the Plaza /
Reports will be in about Thursday/ 11,

On Moncrief 1765 the Contreras property was held by the
Surgeon, Dr. Richard Pritchard. Both of the others were
in the hands of Capt. Henry Skinner, planter and naval

Fish does not 11st these properties.
It was called the Skinner Block: Later it became Quesada Ne. 34.

Ne. 336 adds a bit to this: Here again Howard certified that
by Court order Aptil 5, 1782 all lot owned by John Tenant was
sold to Bernardo Segui.(Not the Library property) Tenant was
just south of Skinner and between Capt. Skinner and the property
once Contreras but now Dr. Pritchard's.

In 1788 this was Block 27, Recque.

No. 244"V'... Dena Kanuela Alvarez de Setemayer.
This is a question mark...???
June 15, 1734 (one) Manuela Alvarez Setomayer married Francisco
Bernava of Galicia.
She was the daughter of Gabriel Alvarez and Josepha Mercade
who were wed here in 1710.
Gabriel Alvarez was the son of Alonse Alvarez Setemayer of Castile
and Juliana Gonzales Villagarcia who married in 1658.
The Adj. Diego Mercade was the father of Josepha and his wife
was Juana BRui Valdes. They married 7/30/1053...
NOTE: This seems to be the one but the name was given MANuELA
ALVAREZ de SANTIAGO y SOTOKATOR. Which, if according to fern, means
a father Alvarez de Santiago and a mother ..Setemayer.
There were de Santiages, in fact one Alvares married a de Santiago
but I could find no such daughter as Manuela.
Alse there was no marriage between a Alvarez de Santiago and a
Sotemayer. So I leave this one as is....but in question.

Relationships-1763

Hospital Street(Aviles)
Squares: "R", "V", "c"
"So" md" "h", "XI".
This was most fantastic! The inter-relationships
were possibly the greatest mixture I have encountered.

On the Calle of the Royal Hospital we find the Brotherhood
of the Holy Sacrament, another of those confraternities
formed to do good works, pray for the souls, etc....

The house of the Brotherhood was in Block "d", No. 271.
The Royal Hospital was in Block "R", No. 233. As far as
I know they were the only two public buildings belonging
to the Government or Church in the little street.

Beginning at the central Plaza and moving south on the
street we pass first a little Plaza on the east and
the Alvaro Lopes i Toledo House on the west.

As we move on we come to the Royal Hospital in "R" next
to Toledo, and across from that in "S" the home of Den
Ildephonse Sanchez de Casahonda. The 6asahenda houses
occupied the whole of the little block.

New we meve on pass the Lane to the sea, (Artillery)
and we are in between Blocks "V" en the west and "X"
en the east. Den Antonio Urbane do Mele is No. 238 "V"
en the corner. Dona Manuala Alvares Sotomayer is No.244
and Cristobal Centreras is on the other corner No. 243.
All in Block "V".

Opposite are the gardens and groves of the houses of Bl. "I".
The houses themselves face on Charlette. No. 247 is Philipe
Hacob(Jacob) Briel, No. 246 is Bernard* Fernandez and No.
245 is Father Juan Jose Solana. Father Selana occupied the
(Artillery Lane) north Lane side and Briel was on the coerer
of the ether cross street(Cadis) sometimes called Greg, Groen..
etc,..

So we move ea to stand between Blocks "e" on the west and
"d" oa the east. The Brotherhood house is in front of us
in "d" with Don Manuel Fermandez Lopes owning the rest of
the block, having houses facing Charlotte but extending
in property to Calls Hospital. Nos. 271 and 272.
Opposite the Brotherhood .and the groves of Lopes we see
in Block"c" en the Gregg eraer the de la Reoos, Ignaeio".
Victorie. No. 269, next to Ignacie Rose we find at No. 268
Den Juan Martines and No. 267, To!ibio Zamerano.

We are now opposite a half Lane, (BRAVO) and
still have Block "c" on the west but Block "h"
is now to the east.
NX.266 "e" is Den Lorense Josef de Aeon facing this
Lane. No. 265 is Jose de la Rosa and on the long cross street,
(BRIDGE) we find Dean Theresa del Pueyo No. 264.
Opposite the Pueye residence, in Bl. "h", No. 291 is Don
Nicelas Ponce de Leon and next to him on the north is
Deon Juan de Salas, Ne. 290.
Mrs. Ignacio Reso(269-c) and Mrs. Antonio Urbane de Melo(238-V}
were sisters, daughters of the Treasurer, Francisce Menendes
Marques, grand-daughters of the earlier(elder) Lorenzose Josef
4e Loen. Both were first cousin to Don Lorenze Josef( randsen
of the older) 266-e. Also let cousin to Don Juan Martlnes
thru the Redriguez-Acesta family. Mrs. Alvare Lepez,(No. 234-R)
was an aunt of both Mrs. Mle and Mrs. Reze. (Meneadez side)
Teribie Zamerane was father of Mrs. Nicelas Penet de Leon(291-h
across the street) and to Mrs. Lorenzo Josef de "een(266c next
deor).....Mrs. Zamerano was let cousin to Den Juan Martinez next door
Mrs. Fernandez Lepes, (272-d) and Theresa del Pueyo, Mrs. Francisco
de Aguilar,(264-c) were half sisters, both daughters of Don Juan
Lerenso Pueye, (by different wives) both grandchildren of Contader
Juan del Pueye and beth great grands of the elder de Leon.
Both 2nd cousin of young L.J. de Leon(266-c) 3rd cousin to Den
Ildephonseo Saenhez Casahonda,(23543) and 2nd cousin to Mrs. Rose,
Mrs. Mele, Theresa del Pueyo in addition, was lost cousin to
Juan Martines on Rodriguez-1costa side, and let cousin to
Mrs. Toribie Zamorane on thz Rios side.
Fernandez Lopez himself was nephew of Niceolas Pence de Leon, (291-h)
Both were cousin to Mrs. Criatobal Centreras(234-V)
Ildephoans Sanchez Casahonda,(235-3) and Don Lorenso Josef de Leon,
(266-c) were nephew and uncle. The mother of the former was sister
of the latter. Both were grand, (gr. grand) of the elder te Leon.

I Mrs. Sanchez Casahonda (235-S) was a de la Puente, sister of
the mapmaker(Juan Eligio de la Puente) and another of their
aistere married Alvare Lopes Teloede' son, Den Antonio.
He cones into this area as he returned and bought this Toledo
property, losing it later to Francisce Sanchez de Ortigesa,
(24-R)

Relatienskips..1763..cont ......... 2-

Realtionskips...1763, cent......-3-

The "I" block property owners, Briel, Fernandez and
Father Solana were all descendants of the Solana family. 247
Briel's ancestor was the Escribano Alense Solana, 3rd.
The powerful scribe from 1678 to 1696 when he died.

Father Selana was son of the Escribane Juan de Selana,
whobe served froe 1696 to 1727 when he died. Beth Scribes 245
were brothers.

Fernandes was sea of Mrs. Briel by another husband. 246
Mrs. Fernandez had for ancestor the Adjutant Alonse Selana,
the 2nd, father of the two Scribes.

During the 2nd Spanish period, Den Manuel Selana, the Mounted,
Dragoon who remained in Florida throughout the British Regime,
goe more than three quarters of this block. He had for an
ancestor the Depuity Governor Don Manuel de Selana, brother
of the two Scribes.

All of the 1763 owners were grandchildren of the Adj. Alonse
the 2nd, and great grands of the Sgt. Major Alonso de Solana, l

Many of this family married into the other families on this
street. For example Capt. Juan Pueye had made a Solana
marriage before de Leen. One had married into the Pence de
Leon family earlier. The Cerderes were connections.

Mrs. Juan de Salas of 290-h was one of their cousins.
Mrs. Josef de la Rosa, 265-e was another connection on the
Hernandez side to Briel of 247-1.

In addition there were many lesser connections. Half of them
should count an Arguellee in the family. More than one had
Capt. Don Manuel Rodriguez Acesta as grandfather.
Mrs. Contreras of 243-'V was from the Pence de Leon-Anaya family.
Several of the families had prominent Florencia relationships.

It certainly was a very closely related grouping in one
period of St. Augustine's history. Marked by a member of
almost every notable and official family known in the town.

Prademinently native were the property owners and wives.
Only about half dosen were "foreign born". Zamerano,
Rose, do Melo, Nunes-Bernava, de Salas, were the foreign
beys. So was Contreras. All the rest were St. Augustine
bern, many with ancestors dating to the late 1500'So
