Back To Andres Ximenez, Native Of

Granada, And Owner In Year 1797


Research work done in connec-
tion with the Fatio House on Aviles
Street, bought last spring by the
National Society of the Colonial
Dames in Florida in cooperation
with the Restoration, shows many
interesting names in connection
with the property as it has come
on down the years.
The first owner of whom much
known is shown to have been
Andres Ximenez, it being trans-
ferred to him in 1797 by Juan Her-
nandez. In Escrituras, 1797-1798,
Page 229v. Nov. 2, 1797, Hernandez
is shown to have transferred to
Andres Ximenez King's lot on Hos-
pital Street, which is its east boun-
dary. Description of the land is
given in detail. An entry in Es-
crituras of 1802 shows that Gover-
nor White confirmed the title to
Ximenez.
Rosa Ximenez, who had the prop-
erty from her father, and her hus-
band, Juan Buchany, deeded the
property in 1827 to Margaret Cook.
In 1838 Miguel Ximanez, presum-
ably a son, gave a deed for his
share;
Margaret Cook sold the property
in 1838 to Sarah P. Anderson,
grandmother of the late Dr. An-
drew Anderson. She was the wi-
dow of George Anderson of Tomo-
ka. Sarah Anderson sold the prop-

Tonight at 8 o'clock at the Cal-
vary Baptist Church a prayer ser-


erty in 1855 to Duisa Fatio, and
it has come on down to the present
generation of St. Augustinians as
"The Old Fatio House," although
its history runs far back of the
Fatio ownership.
In order to show the complete
and detailed information that old
marriage records in the Cathedral
archives here convey, the following
from the marriage entry of Andres
Ximenez and Juana Pellicer is
given:
"Today, Wednesday, the twenty-
seventh of April, of seventeen hun-
dred and ninety-one, after perform-
ing the formalities of celibacy be-
fore me under oath signed, I read
the three banns that our Holy
Mother Church orders, between
three holidays at high mass. The
first on Passion Sunday, the sec-
ond on Palm Sunday, and the third
on Easter Sunday, and completed
the other necessary formalities -
no impediments resulting,, I Don
Thomas Hassett, parish priest, and
vicar and ecclesiastical judge of
this Parish church and Province, of
St. Augustine of eastern Florida,
received the mutual consent of An-
dres Ximenez, single, native of the
parish of St. Cecilia of the City of
Ronda in the reign of Granada, son
of Miguel and Rosa Clavero, and
of Juana Pellicer, single, native of
this parish, and daughter of Fran-
cisco and Margarita Faminias,
neighbors of this city; whose con-
sent they gave mutually with word
that make real and legal mar
riage."
