IN REPLY REFER TO:

St. Augustine, Florida 32084
Dear Mr. Willey:
Since our last communication a number of developments have
transpired concerning the National Register nomination of the
Dummett House. The Department of Interior has recently made a
number of policy decisions affecting historic districts. Indi-
vidual nominations are no longer to be accepted for sites within
existing National Register Historic Districts. The statutory
protections and grants privileges afforded to sites are equal,
whether they are individually listed or listed as part of a
N.R. district. Therefore, nominations for sites within existing
districts must be viewed as a duplication of effort.
While our office agrees with this policy, we have taken
some additional measures. We have requested the National
Register to include a copy of the Dummett House forms in the
St. Augustine District file to establish and document its
significance. As well, we have separately listed the site in
the Florida Inventory of Historic Sites (a state listing).
From our point of view this has not been a wasted effort -
the excellent research performed by you and Mr. Steinbach has
added greatly to our documentation of the site and the general
area. If I may be of further assistance, do not hesitate to
call.
