Dear Sir:
Below is a description of the gold watch stolen May 22, 1974
from the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, Spanish Hospital:
Gold pocketwatch with heavy gold chain and fob ornament -
a star inside of a circle. The watch chimes and the
initials "J. Y. P. are set in diamonds on the cover. There
are also rubies and rhinestones set into the piece.
There is an inscription which reads:
"Presented to Joseph Y. Porter, M.D. Surgeon-in-Charge
U. S. Government Relief Measure, by the Jacksonville
Auxiliary Sanitary Assoc., in Recognition of Valuable
Service to the City of Jacksonville During the Yellow Fever
Epidemic of 1888. "
Appraised value of the watch in 1958 was $4500. 00. Present
value would be estimated at $9000. 00.
