Executive Vice President

Dear Dr. Parham:

As discussed with Mr. Richardson by telephone recently, I am returning to you the
check for $430.00 representing the donation of the Woman's Auxiliary of the
Florida Medical Association for the Florida Medical Museum here in St. Augustine.
I am in hopes that you can hold this generous donation in your accounts until
several knotty problems are resolved here.

As I explained to Mr. Richardson, the check is made out to St. Augustine Restoration,
Inc., our sister organization in the private sector. The Corporation had previously
indicated that they would prefer not to handle these donations for us if other means
could be found. And, as you know, if made out to us the money would have to be
deposited in our Trust Fund and would then be subject to legislative budget approval
to be available for the purposes for which it is intended.

My delay in returning the check was occasioned by several uncertainties which have
arisen in our operation of the Spanish Military Hospital and the Medical Museum.
Since these cannot be resolved until after the final action on our next year's
budget by the Legislature now in session, I think it best to return it to your care
for the moment.

The general budgetary outlook is not good, and it may very well be that we will have
to selectively cut back on the number of buildings we have open to the public.
Because of its isolation from the remainder of our restored buildings and its rela-
tively light attendance figures, it may well be that we will be forced to close
the Hospital and Museum exhibit temporarily. In this event, I would hate to have
just invested the donation in further exhibit preparation. This would not be fair
to the donors.

We may also have to consider the moving of the Medical Museum proper to another of
our buildings to consolidate available manpower.

None of this is certain, but you will, I believe, understand my reluctance to make
any move in regard to the Medical Museum until the situation clears.

Dr. W. Harold Parham

We are extremely grateful to the Florida Medical Association and its Woman's
Auxiliary for its continued support of this project. I hope that we will soon be
in the position to move forward with improvements in the Medical Museum with the
aid of the Auxiliary.

I am sending a copy of this letter to Dr. De Vito, but I do not have the addresses
of the ladies noted on your letter of December 17. Could I prevail upon you to
let them know the situation?

Sincerely,

John W. Griffin, Director
