Site Specific Architectural/Archaeological Standards for the
Wakeman House (Heritage House)
One Aviles Street, St. Augustine, Florida
This document provides data on the architectural, archaeological and
historical significance of the property known as the Wakeman House, also referred
to as the Florida Heritage House. The property is described as lot 1 of block 28
in the St. Augustine subdivision.
These data justify the need for a protective covenant to preserve the
architectural and archaeological value of the property. The property is recognized
by the State of Florida through the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board and
the Division of Historical Resources as a site that contains local, state and
nationally significant architectural and archaeological resources. The site is
recorded in the Florida Master Site File maintained by the Division of Historical
Resources, Florida Department of State, as architectural site 8SJ1025 and as a
property within the St. Augustine Archaeological District designated 8SJ95.
Brief Overview of Significance:
Archaeological
The Wakeman House site has a history which began with the founding of
St. Augustine in the sixteenth century and has continued through time to the
present. The evidence for the site's occupation and use in the 1500s is the
occurrence of sixteenth-century burials. These burials are believed to have been
associated with the first Catholic church constructed in the continental United
States as indicated on the 1586 Boazio map (on file Historic St. Augustine
Preservation Board). Work by Zierden (1979) identified the burials to the south
of the structure as dating to the sixteenth century. Dr. Kathleen Deagan (1978)
used this data in a larger study of the sixteenth-century town plan and
boundaries. The significance of the burials and their surmised association with
the sixteenth-century church indicate that this site contains archaeological data
concerning events of national significance that can be found nowhere else.
Archaeological and historic cartographic evidence demonstrates that this
property was the site of continued significant activity in the seventeenth,
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Archaeological evidence for over four
hundred years of human activity and behavior can be found on this property.
Dr. Hale Smith and Robert Steinbach conducted subfloor excavations at this site
in 1972. These excavations recovered additional human burials on the site
(report enclosed and see file 28-1, Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board)
which were believed to date to the mid-to-late eighteenth century. These burials
have been postulated to be related to the Spanish Military Hospital, known to
have existed south of the Wakeman House in the eighteenth century. It is possible,
however, that these burials are earlier in time period and may date instead to
the sixteenth century.
Attachments 1 through 5 are copies of reports and extracts from reports on
file at the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board. These documents provide
more detailed historical and archaeological data related to the Wakeman House
property.
Architectural
The architectural history and description of the existing structure are
best described by the Florida Master Site File form enclosed as Attachment 6.
