UNDER THREE FLAGS
The San Carlos House is built of Coquina rock
brought from the quarries of Anastasia Island, and
first discovered by -Gov. Domingo Martines Aven-
dano, 1580.
Like the Fort and sea wall, many of the older
edifices were constructed from this rock, especially
during the seventeenth century. This 'house is
clearly shown on.the map attributed to John Bar-
tram, made in 1769 during the British occupation
and was undoubtedly built years prior to this date
-probably directly after the destruction of city
by the freebooter Davis, 1665, and thus func-
tioned under three flags-Spanish, English and
United States. It is one of the-interesting original
relics of the city's ancient days, built directly on
the street as was the custom in the early centuries.
It is located in the heart of the city on Treasury-
street, which is considered the narrowest street in
the United States.
Chronology of St. Augustine

Menendez de Aviles and occupies the former site
of the Indian town Selooe.

was ratified by change of flags the 17th day
of June, '* 1821.
