UNDER THREE FLAGS
The San Carlos House is built of Coquina rock
brought from the quarries of Anastasia Island, and
first discovered by Gov. Domingo Martines Aven-
dano, 1580.
Like the Fort and sea wall, many of the older
edifices were constructed from this rock, especially
during the seventeenth century. This house is
clearly shown on the map attributed to John Bar-
tram, made in 1769 during the British occupation
and was undoubtedly built years prior to this date
-probably directly after the destruction of city
by the freebooter Davis, 1665, and thus func-
tioned under three flags--Spanish, English and
United States. It is one of the interesting original
relics of the city's ancient days, built directly on
the street as was the custom in the early centuries.
It is located in the heart of the city on Treasury
street, which is considered the narrowest street in
the United States.

Chronology of St. Augustine
St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Don Pedro
Menendez de Aviles and occupies the former site
of the Indian town Selooe.
1586, Destroyed by fire by Sir Francis Drake.
1610, Fired by natives.
1665, Destroyed by Captain Davis, an English buc-
caneer.
1702, By Governor Moore of South Carolina.
1704, Attacked by General Oglethorpe.
1748, Treaty between Spain and England.
1763, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain.
1783, Great Britain receded Florida to Spain.
1811, President Monroe despatched troops to
Florida.
1818, General Jackson captured Florida.
1819, Spain and United States signed treaty which
was ratifedby chanJge of flags the 17th day

two interesting old buildings is a walk with
stretches of greensward on either side leading
to garden in the rear. An old spinning wheel,
garden jars add a quaint note, while through
the iron gate you glimpse colorful vistas of
lawn and flower beds. The tropical banana
trees give a tone of the Southland. A sand-
stone jar, made 300 years ago and the old
coquina well, each linking the past with mod-
ern beauty.
