DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (if known) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
This house was the subject and an intensive architectural study
by the firm of Fisher and Shepard, Architects and Planners, Inc.
(1975) under the personal supervision of Herschel E.Shepard AIA.
The following description has been extracted from that study.
The house, built circa 1806, is a one-story, gabled roof, coquina
masonry structure containing three rooms and a porch on the ground
floor with a loft space above. It is approximately 26 1/2' x 32'
overall, ,located in the extreme NW corner of the lot, with its
north wall contiguous to Treasury Street..
The floor in the house was originally wood with a hexagonal
concrete tile replacing it sometime during the early part of the
20th century. The porch had a tabby concrete pavement. m
m
All existing masonry walls date from the original construction
as does the basic roof framing. Fenestration has undergone some
modification which included the opening of a gable window on the z
east, the conversion of windows on the north and south sides into
doors, and the sealing of a door on the south. Remnant portions
of frames remain in most openings. o
C
The present composition roof was laid over solid sheathing although r
the evidence indicates that the original covering was shingle over .
stripping.
o
Much of the interior finish which dated from a 20th century
renovation was removed during the architectural investigation.
There are not utilities in the house at present.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Joanada House is one of 31 surviving structures within the
Historic District that-predates the American Territorial Period (1821).
It's basic design remains unchanged from the time it was constructed and
Zc represents one of the few remaining examples of Manucy's basic
o St. Augustine Plan house (Manucy 1962:55).
This plan, which met local -climatic !needs, is essentially a simple
u rectangle of two to four rooms with a loggia or porch, and often a
street balcony. It was oriented with its open spaces to the south or
east so that the prevailing south-east wind provided adequate ventilation
to the rooms during summer. The porches or loggias were shaded at this
F- time of year while during winter they offered a warm and sunny spot,
4A sheltered from the north wind by the hquse's mass.
Wooden components are most fragile members in colonial construction
due to the destructive nature of the sUb-tropical environment in
U" St. Augustine. The survival, of original roof framing therefore adds
Wu considerably to the house's architectural value.
While no notable personalities can be associated with the house, its
value as an example of the common man's abode cannot be over estimated.
