Under this pro v ision , a Police O f f i c e r c a n o n l y u s e f o r ce dependin g on the circu m stances h e o r s h e i s c o n fr o n t ed w i th in the execution of their duties. How e v e r , Po l ice O f f ice r m us t tr y to e xer c ise restraint when discha rg in g their weapons. I f t h e p o lic e is to m ini m ize ra n do m , unl a wful and u nju s tif i e d d a nge r o u s e n g a g e m e n t, there m ust be clear and concise set of ter m s of en g a g e m ent. Whene v er a Poli c e O f f i cer uses unjustifiable force a g ainst innocent citizens it will always cause public outra g e and lead to s t ra i ned re l at i on s hi p be t we e n t he Police and the co mm unity I r e c e nt l y r e c e ived a n e m a il about the death of a youn g m an w h o w as al l e g e d l y s ho t b y a Pol i ce O f f i ce r . F r o m the news reports I ha v e been m onitorin g, I h eard on L ove FM that the P o l i c e i s i n v e s t iga t i n g t he m atte r. W h i l e t h e ma t t er i s u n d er in v esti g ation , the public should await the results before m a k ing a n y a s s u m p t i o n s a b o u t t he m atte r. I f the fa m ily of the v icti m is not satisfied with the results of the in v esti g ation , they will still ha v e a lot of follow up actions that they will be able to use to g et the entire truth in the m atte r. Th e Mi n ist e r o f N a tio n al S ecurit y , the A ttorney General, th e O m bu d s m an , the D i recto r of P u bl i c P ro s ec u t i on s a n d t he Co mm issioner o f Police , should be a v ailable for consultation by relati v es see k in g answers.
